Small men do not like to serve or be hospitable. Abraham was sitting in the hottest part of the day, just trying to survive the summer when he saw some men walking up the road. Instead of sitting there wiping sweat and sipping lemonade, he jumped up and set to work serving them a meal.

Great men serve others

Jesus gave us this example. He washed dirty feet and ministered to broken lives. Small men grasp after Godhood like Adam after the fruit from the tree. Jesus did not see Godhood as something to be grasped after, but He humbled Himself to zero reputation and servant status. That is why Jesus is the most highly exalted human in all the universe. He is higher than any other thing, physical or spiritual (Philippians 2:5-8).

If you want to be a great man, you must enjoy serving. How are you about hospitality? I know it is an art form I have had to learn. Once we bought our own house, I wanted to have someone over each week. At times I think I was wearing my wife out with all the killing of the fatted calf and such, but my heart was in the right place. I wanted to serve and give.

Great men serve no-names

Abraham did not serve these guys because they were important but because they were people. Nothing indicates that he realized the identity of his guests until after he had served them. Of course we all want to wine and dine the important people we brush shoulders with. However, we will only discover greatness in ourselves when we serve insignificant people with great care. Who can you show honor to this week?

The humble road of hospitality will help cure you of small man syndrome. Give, love, share, and serve. And watch yourself become a great man, like Abraham, who will care enough to pray even for godless people. The Lord trusted this man with inside information on His plan for Lot’s town. We all want to have the inside scoop on what God is up to. By being men of greatness through serving others, we prove ourselves trustworthy to Him who knows our hearts.
