Mobile Learning Curriculum

SmallScreens curriculum is a mobile literacy curriculum written specifically for English-language learners.  Units break down key vocabulary, provide authentic scenarios to practice talking about and using mobile vocabulary, and ensure language does not become a barrier to achieving mobile independence.

The curriculum is grounded in the Situated Learning theory that suggests that learning that takes place in a realistic context is more effective than studying similar content in a classroom.

Mobile literacy supports resettled refugee populations in problem solving, navigating the world, learning new languages and skills, and connecting with friends and family. Even refugees who own mobile devices and have internet access are not often using the full range of available applications and functionalities (UNESCO, 2018).

During flight, at country of asylum, and resettlement, refugees are challenged with:

• Maintaining connectivity with friends & Family

• Lack of language and literacy skills in host country

• Disorientation in new environments

• Exclusion & isolation

In more than one hundred countries around the world, the number of mobile devices exceeds the countries’ populations. The latest data from the GSMA reports 5 Billion subscribers with 57% connecting with a smartphone. As subscriber growth continues and dependency on the mobile device for everyday life increases, mobile literacy is more important than ever.

While access to mobile devices has increased, thoughtful and functional training on mobile technology has not.
