Few days ago somebody did ask me, how to learn how to make an iPhone app. I was surprised by this question. If you want to learn how to make an iPhone app you can do it by your self.

You don’t need any special knowledge to start learning how to make an iPhone app. Moreover you don’t need any trainings or courses. They might help you but they are are not essential for making good iPhone app.

At first get a Mac if you don’t have it. Then you will need to get an XCode toolset. It includes the Xcode IDE, iOS Simulator and all required tools and frameworks for building iPhone apps. You will spend most of your time using the Xcode.

You don’t need a developer account at least for the first few months but it might help you because you will get access to important learning resources like WWDC videos. You will need a developer account when you will be ready to test your app on a real iPhone.

Now it’s a right time to start asking Google how to make an iPhone app. Pickup the first tutorial, follow the instructions and there is your first iPhone app up and running.

Interesting? That’s just a beginning. There are many ways where to go from this basic application. You can learn how to make a simle table view application, or you can learn how to display data on few separate screens with navigation between them like on most iPhone apps. Or you might want to create a simple tab bar application.

You can learn how to show an alert to tell your user about any changes in your app or how to show a reminder about an event.

There are many things what you can do for you app and Google will help you to find answers. There are all the answers for your questions.

You start asking Google questions which lead you to all sorts of resources like Stack Overflow (that’s my favorite) and a million blogs and other forums. You will find millins of code samples and how-to’s. You will find many open source projects and many advices.

You can find articles on how to store user settings, or you can find a tutorial about creating your own data base using Core Data technology.

During your studying process at some point you will need to understand a Model-View-Controller architecture. That’s a way how to build you app and iOS frameworks were designed to support this architecture. It might save you a lot of time if you get it right.

The second thing is the Apple human interface guidelines Invest your time to read this document. That’s an essential document for building user interface for iPhone applications.

If you will strugle with some feature or bug you might watch a video tutorial like that one about navigation controllers.

During this studying process you will create many simple applications. Moreover you will find some interesting ideas for your own application. Some day you will decide that you have learned enough to start making your own app. So just create a new project in XCode and start writing your own app.

At this moment you will get back to google with your own specific problems and questions. Lots of people have faced similar problems already and you will find ready to take solutions. Sometimes the answers are not right, the code contains bugs and you will create your own solution and you might share it with the developer community.

Then you will become concert on your code quality and these two articles might explain you basics on naming classes, variables, accessors, general methods and abbreviations and more detail on method names, global symbols, the id type, method parameters, etc.

When your app will be ready you will find useful to integrate twitter or facebook with your app or you might even start using a Share Kit for that purpose.

To improve user experience and application responsiveness you might need to study Grand Central Dispatch technology.

If you will decide to open source your code you will need to use some sort of version controll system like Git.

You can do everything by your self and once your app is ready please send me a link, I would like to see it.

If you are still asking how to learn how to make an iPhone app, get an XCode and start making your first iPhone app.

Just as you cannot not communicate, you cannot not market:

Every time you answer the phone, it’s marketing.

Every time you send an e-mail, it’s marketing.

Every time someone uses your product, it’s marketing.

Every word you write on your Web site is marketing.

If you build software, every error message is marketing.

If you’re in the restaurant business, the after-dinner mint is marketing.

If you’re in the retail business, the checkout counter is marketing.

If you’re in a service business, your invoice is marketing.

Recognize that all of these little things are more important than choosing which piece of swag to throw into a conference goodie bag. Marketing isn’t just a few individual events. It’s the sum total of everything you do.

I prefer Mac OS X Lion for it’s security and data protection. I’m using Time Machine for making backups of my data and I was using FileVault for my data encryption. In the end it is all about my data.

With FileVault 2 Mac OS X Lion gives you an incredible way to protect all your data, but I would like to protect all my backups as well. I was trying to find some information on how to encrypt external drive for using it with the FileVault 2 but without a success. In the end I have found an easy way on how to encrypt my backup drive and this is a short tutorial.

1. Open Time Machine preferences and press Select Disk… button

2. Select your drive and check Encrypt backup disk option

3. Enter and confirm password for drive encryption and press Encrypt Drive button

4. Time Machine will encrypt your backup drive

5. After encryption it will start backing up your data as usual. You are done!
