Review

The US version of the phone differs as it has a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Processor with 1.5 GHz Dual-Core CPUs, while the the rest of the hardware specs are the same as the international version.

I switched from an HTC EVO 4G to get this phone and so far it's been great! Here are the things I like about the phone:

* The phone is a nice size, it's lighter than my HTC EVO 4G.
* The processor is one of the fastest US released Android phone, and it comes with 2 GB of RAM.
* I played around with the camera and video camera and the quality is great in my opinion. (I'll post some pics or a video later.)
* The ICS 4.0 is really snappy and it opens up applications quickly.
* It comes with Google Wallet. I signed up and got a free $10 to use. (I'm going to McDonald's to test it out!)
* I've only use the S Voice application a few times, but it seems to be just like Siri on my wife's iPhone 4S.
* It comes with a micro SD slot in case more space is needed to save pictures, videos, etc.
* You can change out the battery if needed.
* Battery life last twice as long compared to my HTC EVO 4G.

Now for some cons:

* This is carrier related and not the phone itself, but the 4G LTE is not all in all areas so be sure to check your carrier if internet speeds is a deciding factor in purchasing this phone. If not you'll be stuck with 3G speeds.
* The phone is so nice, that I baby it all the time!

I was on the fence about getting this phone or the HTC EVO 4G LTE aka HTC One X. The main things that I like over the the Samsung Galaxy 3 over the HTC EVO 4G LTE is that it comes with the Micro SD slot and also the battery can be changed if it ever goes bad.

I love this phone! :)

Review

Just received my case today in the mail. Leather is nice and soft, fits the iPhone 5 perfectly. Looks great with the white iPhone 5. Credit Card slots are a little tight but once the leather breaks in overtime I'm sure this won't be a problem. This case is very similar to the BookBook by Twelve South, though the BookBook's construction and leather is of higher quality. There is a small pocket where you can slide in some cash or some business cards as well which was a nice addition.

If you're looking for a wallet case for your phone the price and quality are right up there. All around edge protection.

Review
I have always preferred bumpers, not cases, and was treating my white i5 with kid gloves until this arrived. It was as I was expecting, cheap, but usable.

It has plastic not metal buttons, and they are very hard to push.

The cutout for the lighting connector is not correct so the cable just sits loosely in the phone, enough to charge, but not enough to stay connected if you move the phone around. Several times while writing this review I either picked up the phone or moved it around slightly, and every time the lightning port lost its connection. Hopefully they'll fix this soon and I'll buy another unless a competing product some along that uses a softer rubber rather than TPU, see the next point.

The "rubber" part is actually TPU plastic. The problem with this is that it's very hard, and grit will get between it and your i5 and it WILL scratch the device. This is why Apple used a softer rubber instead - even though it will decay after a while, it won't scratch your phone. Best to remove this bumper weekly and wash it with mild soap so as to mitigate that debris build up that will cause scratching.

The color is not a pure white like the Apple bumper, but it's acceptable.

The slight porting of the speaker and microphone actually assist when using speakerphone or listening to audio. Only a little bit, just as any case will, but it does make a positive difference.

It's very light.

The overall fit is 100% perfect. I was surprised by how completely perfectly it fits the phone. In fact I think it fits better than the Apple bumper on the 4S.

To conclude: It's worth the money, but I'd rather pay more for a better one. I want softer rubber so it won't scratch the phone. I want metal buttons, and I want the lightning cutout to be fixed.

UPDATE: The seller called me wanting me to leave a positive review to knock this review out of first position. When I told him that this review is mine, he no longer wanted to speak with me and hung up the phone. Be careful of overly positive reviews! I've only had the case for a week, but I love it. It is slim, so doesn't increase the size of my iPhone at all. Really cute color. The only thing is it is extremely smooth, which I assumed it would be, hence why I didn't take off in rating. If you have it on a smooth surface it will slide like crazy. Great case, so far.

Also, I was told by someone while I was out that they dropped their phone with this case and it broke after a couple times. To this, this case is not meant to protect it from crazy falls or anything, which I am aware. It's meant to look cute, but also protect it from everyday scratches from your purse or pocket. If I wanted to be able to run it over by a car and it still be fine I would have bought the case that doubles the size of the iPhone.

EE announces 4G Galaxy S3, One XL and Lumia handsets coming to UK

Everything Everywhere has announced the exclusive 4G enabled Samsung Galaxy S3, HTC One XL, Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 are coming to the UK

EE, previously Everything Everywhere, will bring a range of 4G enabled handsets to the UK for use on its new 4G network service.

Devices revealed so far include the Samsung Galaxy S3 LTE, HTC One XL, Huawei Ascend P1 LTE and Nokia’s newly released pair of Windows Phone 8 handsets: the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820.

We also saw an HTC One S running on 4G for the demonstration, but there was no word on whether a 4G unlocked model would be available to customers.

In terms of specs, these handsets remain the same as their regular 2G/3G capable variants but they have the unlocked capability to use the superfast 4G LTE 1.8GHz spectrum on EE’s new network.

EE is the first network to announce its plans to bring the Lumia 920 and 820 and HTC’s One XL to the UK.

It’s not yet clear whether these devices will remain EE exclusives or whether you’ll be able to get non-4G versions through other networks.

At the very least, EE will be the only network where you can get 4G enabled models in the near future. Company chief executive Olaf Swantee also said that more devices would be following soon.

EE is Everything Everywhere’s new brand for 4G and fast home broadband, the company will also continue to operate Orange and T-Mobile, offering individual services through each which will use EE’s overall network infrastructure.

Essentially, although you may go into an EE shop and buy an Orange or T-Mobile deal, it’s EE you’ll see on your network signal from now on.

Nokia’s recently announced Lumia 920

Nokia’s recently announced Lumia 920 flagship Windows Phone 8 handset will be exclusively available through EE’s (formerly Everything Everywhere) newly unveiled 4G network for a limited time, according to reports.

Shortly after EE’s announcement of its new brand and 4G rollout, the company took to Twitter where it declared the Lumia 920 an ‘exclusive to @EE’.

The Verge has since talked to unnamed EE spokespeople who confirmed the flagship Lumia 920 would ‘have a period of exclusivity at launch’, suggesting that it could later hit other networks or become available as a SIM-free device.

Meanwhile, The Verge also quotes an anonymous source at Nokia who alleged the Lumia 920 ‘may’ land with other networks but stressed that the company is not ready to make any announcements just yet, implying perhaps that it is still in negotiations.

EE hasn’t yet unveiled when its 4G capable devices will be available, only stating that the 4G rollout had begun and more changes would happen ‘in the coming weeks’. Other handsets shown were the Lumia 820, HTC One XL, Huawei Ascend P1 LTE and Samsung Galaxy S3 LTE.

Periods of limited exclusivity aren’t a new phenomenon but they’re much more common in other industries and markets than the mobile space.

For example, it’s not at all unusual for some newly released games to be exclusive to Microsoft’s Xbox for a limited time of perhaps a few months before also being made available for Sony’s PS3 and PCs.

In the grand scheme of things we expect non-EE customers to get hold of the Lumia 920 eventually, however, whether this will be before other networks rollout their own 4G services or not, remains to be seen.

We take a look at two of the most photogenic camera phones on the market, Nokia’s newly announced Lumia 920 and Apple’s iPhone 4S

Nokia’s smartphones have a good track record when it comes to their photographic prowess, from the excellent N8, to the 808 PureView – the company’s devices continually punch above their weight and the newest addition to its stable, the Lumia 920, is set to continue that trend.

To get a view of how much it offers, and the overall quality and value it’s able to bring to the end user, we’re comparing it to Apple’s iPhone 4S, a device which is responsible for making photography fun again.

Will the Lumia 920 end the iPhone’s reign or will Apple’s device come out on top?

Power

Apple’s iPhone 4S is powered by a dual-core 1GHz Cortex-A9 CPU and also features a PowerVR SGX543MP2 GPU, making it a great smartphone for gaming and enjoying media.

The iPhone 4S also packs 512MB RAM and 16, 32 or 64GB of internal storage, with no support for removable media such as micro SD cards.

Nokia’s Lumia 920 is driven by one of Qualcomm’s MSM8960 chipsets which consists of a dual-core 1.5GHz ‘Krait’ CPU and an Adreno 225 GPU.

The device also sports 1GB RAM and 32GB of storage but, like the iPhone, lacks support for removable media.

The Nokia Lumia 920 is fronted by a 4.5-inch IPS TFT touchscreen which operates at a resolution of 768 x 1280 and has a pixel density of 332PPI.

The screen is super responsive, allowing users to operate it with a gloved hand, and colours appear vivid, as do blacks and greys.

Apple’s iPhone 4S features the company’s famous Retina Display technology giving the 3.5-inch screen with a pixel density of 330PPI, operating at a resolution of 640 x 960.

The iPhone’s screen is pin-sharp, much like the Nokia’s, and colors are similarly well reproduced, but the overall edge goes to Nokia’s entry in this criterion simply for the tremendous responsiveness of the Lumia 920’s display.

The Lumia 920 is a fine looking device carved from a piece of polycarbonate. It’s reasonably slim without being wafer thin and flimsy, and it shares many design cues with previous models of Lumia too, with the same touch sensitive keys and bezel making an appearance on the face of the phone.

Naturally, being a Nokia, you can be fairly sure that the device is robust too, as it will have passed the Finns discriminating drop test and other weird and wonderful punishments in order to ensure it doesn’t mess with the company’s reputation (or the internet meme).

Apple’s iPhone 4S is a good looking smartphone, faced front and back with glass, which looks like a work of art in a certain light. Unfortunately it doesn’t retain those stunning good looks if you drop it on concrete (or anything else harder than it is).

Fragility aside the device is nicely balanced, slim and a very comfortable weight and remains one of the more distinctive smartphones on the market.

Software

The iPhone 4S runs iOS, Apple’s mobile platform, which is still as usable and dependable as it was back in 2007 when it launched. Unfortunately it still looks the same too, which is a bit of a downer as other mobile operating systems have grown a lot, leaving it looking pretty plain – and without widgets or customizations there isn't really a lot you can do within the terms of the device’s warranty.

The Apple App Store is a great plus point for iOS though, as it’s stocked to the gills with great apps for virtually any task or demand you can think of.

The Nokia Lumia 920 runs on the next iteration of Microsoft’s new mobile OS, Windows Phone 8, and the software has received some great upgrades and tweaks making it, well, what it should have been 2 years ago.

WP8 boasts a newly upgraded browser, some fantastic security enhancements (making it a great choice for business users), Wallet – which enables you to capitalize on the device’s NFC functionality and Nokia Maps – which gives users offline mapping among other features.

The device is also able to take advantage of Microsoft’s Windows Phone Marketplace for app downloads, and there are plenty in there already.

Apps designed for Windows Phone 7 work on Windows Phone 8 too, but apps aimed at the newer platform won’t work with older devices which run WP7 – which is something of a disappointment.

Camera

Apple’s iPhone sports a very impressive 8-megapixel camera with an LED flash, autofocus, geo-tagging, face detection, HDR, touch focus and 1080P video capture with stabilization.

The device also features a VGA front-facing camera for FaceTime usage.

Performance-wise the iPhone 4S’ camera is good. It takes high quality still images in ideal light conditions and captured video is good too. Put the device into the hands of a professional and you’ll really see what it can do though – it’ll produce striking, print worthy stills with rich colors and contrasts.

The Nokia Lumia 920 features an 8-megapixel primary camera too, with Carl Zeiss optics, LED flash, optical image stabilization, autofocus, 1080P video capture and geo-tagging.

The device’s secondary camera is 1.3-megapixel.

At a basic-level it takes great snaps too, with very impressive low-light capture and nice color reproduction but the Lumia’s camera really comes to life when married up with Nokia’s software enhancements though, and features like Cinemagraph, which allows users to shoot a .gif-like image, and Smartshoot, which enables you to remove or add objects from photos really add to the overall experience of using the camera.

Nokia’s newest Lumia has bested the iPhone 4S in our statistical face-off today. The device is neat looking, capable, very powerful and runs on a new and improved version of Microsoft’s OS which looks as complete as anything Google or Apple have produced.

Apple’s iPhone 4S is still a good device but its age is showing through. The real test will come next week when the iPhone 5 gets its debut – but for now let’s allow the Nokia to enjoy its victory.

Amazon Kindle Fire HD vs iPad 3 vs iPad Mini

It's a three-way fight this time round as the iPad 3 takes on the rumoured iPad Mini and Amazon's Kindle Fire HD

We pitch Apple’s current iPad 3 and its rumoured iPad Mini against the Amazon Kindle Fire HD.

Form

The iPad 3 is the largest of the three tablets we’re comparing here with its 9.7-inch display and in most ways it’s virtually identical to its predecessor, the iPad 2.

This means you get the same iconic Apple style with softly rounded corners, a moderately sized and evenly proportioned bezel around the screen and a back panel which slopes upwards and inwards slightly from the front.

The slate comes in either black or white colouration with a flashy aluminium back panel and is quite sleek and modern looking, if a little ‘bubbly’ thanks to its curvy design.

In terms of build quality you get exactly what you’d expect from Apple and that’s a premium level of fit and finish and overall the device seems very sturdy to hold.

Previous rumours indicated the iPad Mini would be closer in design to an enlarged iPod Nano than to the existing iPad models. However, since then more recent leaks have strongly suggested it will follow the iPad 3’s form factor quite closely but on a smaller scale.

Plenty of leaks have put forward 7.85-inches as the golden figure for the iPad Mini, although some sources still say it’ll be dead on 7-inches. Our money is on the former.

It’ll also allegedly feature the iPhone 5’s much-reported charging port, which has a smaller design than the one seen on previous Apple products and, like the iPhone 5, may or may not have the 3.5mm audio jack moved to the bottom of the device.

Again we expect the build quality to be excellent all round, we also doubt Apple will scrimp on materials even though rumours persist of a budget price tag and leaks indicate we’re still talking about an aluminium back panel.

Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD will only be available in the UK as the 7-inch version (at least for now) but the form factor between the two size types appears to be more or less the same.

We’ve previously drawn comparisons in its visual design with the ill-fated HP TouchPad and, to be clear, we thought that was something of a looker.

It’s more rounded at the corners than even the iPad and appears to have a larger bezel, though as with Apple’s device it’s evenly proportioned all the way round.

The back panel is rubber-coated and there’s a black band around the bottom section with the Kindle logo.

We haven’t had a hands-on with the Kindle Fire HD, so can’t vouch for its build quality, though we can say we got to grips previously with the original Kindle Fire and it was a reassuringly robust and well-built tablet, which suggests to us the same attention will have been lavished on the successor model.

At the end of the day tablet aesthetic design is one of the more uninspiring aspects of mobile tech as there’s apparently only so much that can be done with the medium. They all end up looking like rectangular slabs.

Which is, of course, totally fine, but it creates a situation in these comparisons where the only measuring stick is build quality and, when you’re dealing with heavy hitters like Apple and Amazon you know it’s going to be equally good.

The one thing we will say is that, for dedicated tablets (as opposed to the new class of hybrid laptop/tablets) we’re beginning to like the smaller form-factor more and more, rendering the iPad 3 the less appealing option of the three devices compared here.

Winner – Draw between iPad Mini and Amazon Kindle Fire HD

Storage

Apple is fairly consistent with its storage offerings from one device to the next, whether it’s a smartphone or tablet, the newest hardware always comes in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB flavours with no Micro SD capability.

That’s certainly the case for the iPad 3, however, with the iPad Mini we’re not entirely sure what the scenario will be.

On the one hand, it may have the full three options, but on the other, if rumours of a low-price are true, it could have just the lower 16GB and 32GB options or even 8GB and 16GB instead. In any case, Micro SD is extremely unlikely.

With the Kindle Fire HD, Amazon is offering both 16GB and 32GB models at very competitive prices (£159 and £199 respectively), though neither has Micro SD.

It’s still wide open on how Apple will price the possible variations of the iPad Mini but we’d be surprised if it will offer them for as low as Amazon.

Even so, in the meantime the Kindle Fire HD is doing better on memory-to-price than the iPad 3 and virtually every other tablet out there.

That said, the 64GB iPad 3 has much more memory than the Kindle Fire HD is capable of bringing to the table.

We think on balance the Kindle Fire HD is the better option on the current market – the 64GB iPad 3’s large quantity of storage space isn’t that necessary and is much more expensive.

This could all change if and when the iPad Mini appears, of course.

Winner – Amazon Kindle Fire HD

Processor

The iPad 3 uses an ARM Cortex-A9 dual core processor on the company’s own A5X chipset clocked at 1GHz with 1GB of RAM and a quad core PowerVR SGX543MP4 graphics processing unit (GPU) to deliver snappy visuals.

Apple’s so good at optimising its iOS operating system that you probably wouldn’t notice a difference between this and less meaty setups running the same software.

But with that said, the extra grunt does mean it’ll handle more intensive apps, games and tasks than earlier models might be able to and going forward will continue to do so as developers churn out more advanced software.

It’s future-proofing, essentially, and means that, should Apple ever decide to add true multi-tasking to later iterations of iOS, for example, it’ll be able to take on the new functionality where older single-core iPads might not.

The iPad Mini may share the same setup, in fact we expect it to even if Apple aims for a budget price tag.

There is an outside possibility that, if it’s a premium model, it may feature the rumoured A6 chipset which may or may not make its way into the forthcoming iPhone 5, though rumours still suggest it may not exist and the iPhone 5 will still have an A5X.

The Amazon Kindle Fire HD also runs a dual core ARM Cortex-A9 setup but it’s on the Texas Instruments OMAP 4460 chip clocked at 1.2GHz with 1GB of RAM and a PowerVR SGX540 GPU.

This is a powerful set of hardware and should have no trouble running Amazon’s modified Android 4.0 build at a rapid pace with smooth performance.

Display

Apple has a habit of setting the bar for display tech and the iPad 3 is no different. It’s still easily the best tablet display on the market, although a few competitors have come close to touching its 264 pixels-per-inch (ppi) pixel density.

As we mentioned, it has a 9.7-inch IPS Retina multitouch display with scratch-resistant glass and a water and oil resistant oleophobic coating, as well as a resolution of 2048x1536 pixels.

As you might expect its clear and sharp, the brightness is impressive, colours are suitably vibrant, contrast pops well and blacks and dark colours have plenty of depth.

Generally it delivers everything you’d want from a good display.

Question marks are still hovering over whether Apple will deliver a similar level of polish with the iPad Mini’s display.

Again part of the problem is the issue of whether this will be a budget device to compete at the Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle Fire HD’s sub-£200 price point or if it’ll be a standalone premium model.

There are rumours which suggest the former scenario to be the case and that this will see an iPad Mini without a Retina-quality display.

On the other hand, with the current offerings from competitors there’s a solid case for the idea that Apple will need to bring its Retina tech out to play in order to make the iPad Mini appealing to consumers.

In which case, we’d be talking about the highest pixel density and sharpest picture of any 7-inch tablet to date.

Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD has a few nifty display features which place it ahead of the rest of the pack as things stand currently.

Broadly speaking it’s much the same as the Nexus 7, with a 7-inch IPS LCD capacitive multitouch screen, a 1280x800 pixel resolution and a pixel density of 216ppi.

However, Amazon has added some extra technology to make viewing media content on the go that little bit easier.

According to the company’s launch statements it features some advanced polarization treatments and has been crafted by laminating the touch layer into the display during production (as opposed to layering it on top afterwards).

Sharpness and contrast are hugely improved over standard IPS LCDs and the polarization reduces sun glare by as much as 25 per cent. It’s also been tweaked to allow some seriously wide viewing angles with no loss of clarity or colour reproduction.

Obviously the best display quality comes from the iPad 3’s large-scale Retina screen. Though you do make a compromise on portability, it could equally be argued that the bigger expanse of glass is better for appreciating films, photos, webpages and games.

The 7-inch scale is still great for this, however, and Amazon has done a great job at making things look as good as possible.

Ultimately though, we’re betting on the iPad Mini being a game-changer for displays in the 7-inch tablet space.

Operating System

The iPad 3 runs iOS 5.1 at present and will no doubt upgrade to iOS 6 when it launches with the iPhone 5 soon. The iPad Mini may arrive alongside the iPhone 5 or shortly after but either way we expect it to ship on iOS 6.

Apple has been keeping fairly quiet about what to expect in the sixth iteration of its mobile software platform, although one thing we do know is the company has invested plenty of time, effort and money into revamping its aged distribution fronts – the App Store, iTunes and so on. It’s a much needed and welcome change.

We’d like to think Apple would also overhaul the look and feel of the platform generally as it’s now quite dated, but we haven’t seen anything to suggest this is the case and if we’re honest we’re not exactly optimistic about it.

In terms of functionality there’s nothing wrong with the platform as it is, although it is a little stagnant with no sweeping and significant updates in recent memory.

Again we’d like it if this changed with iOS 6 and Apple will need to do something in the wake of Windows Phone 8, Windows 8 and Android Jelly Bean 4.1 or it’ll start to lose its grip on the market.

The Kindle Fire HD uses a custom build of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, though the modifications run so deep that it’s virtually unrecognisable.

As with the previous Kindle Fire (which hasn’t previously been released in the UK but will be arriving alongside the Kindle Fire HD) Amazon has designed the interface as a content consumption platform for you to access anything and everything you’ve bought via the company’s various distribution platforms.

This includes eBooks, music, films, games, apps, magazines and much more besides.

Many interface elements are designed around a content carousel and the main screen you’ll interact with is one of these which houses all your most recently used apps and media regardless of category.

There are, of course, categorised sections if you’re just looking for eBooks or music, for example.

Other features include Skype and Facebook integration and the ability to view work-related documents such as Adobe PDFs and Microsoft Office files.

There’s also a catch-all email app which can work with AOL, Microsoft Exchange, Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo! Accounts.

Lastly, you’ve got Amazon’s Silk browser which provides very rapid surfing through webpage compression via remote servers.

Amazon’s ecosystem is compelling if you’re heavily invested in its digital distribution platforms, or alternatively: if you’re not heavily invested in other platforms already and don’t mind the idea of using just Amazon.

Otherwise it’s a bit of a hard sell as you might find some of your non-Amazon content for other Android devices inaccessible here. It might be Android-based but it’s a closed system.

But then, in many ways so is iOS. It’s really a question of which brand you prefer.

Amazon isn’t offering anything hugely different to the iPad here, it’s a similar experience in a smaller package and with an alternative flavour.

There’s nothing wrong with that, of course, but it’s important to make the distinction that the Kindle Fire HD is not as open as many other Android slates – it’s a specifically tailored media consumption portal for those who like to buy everything through Amazon.

If that sounds like you then you may find it a very useful device.

We compare Nokia’s Lumia 800 to its newly announced successor the Lumia 820

When Nokia joined forces with Microsoft last year plenty of eyebrows were raised but the company’s first run of Lumia devices were a success. Their build quality, good looks and great performance coupled with Microsoft’s rapidly improving OS vindicated the Finns’ decision to ally with Redmond’s finest – and things are about to go from strength to strength for the pair of them.

Nokia’s newest Lumia’s are finally upon us, and the devices look fantastic – but how do they measure up to last year’s best? Well, let’s measure the new Lumia 820 against the Lumia 800 to find out!

Display

The Nokia Lumia 800 features a 3.7-inch AMOLED touchscreen which operates at a resolution of 480 x 800 and offers a pixel density of 252PPI.

The screen is coated with Gorilla Glass giving it the edge in terms of resilience and is also very responsive and, as you would expect, it offers great performance with vivid colours, decent viewing angles and deep blacks.

The Lumia 820 features a 4.3-inch AMOLED screen which operates at a resolution of 480 x 800. As you would expect, the display’s pixel density is lower owing to the extra screen real estate but 217PPI seems like a reasonable exchange for some bonus screen space.

The display is just as impressive as the Lumia 800’s in terms of performance, offering good colour reproduction, solid viewing angles and low power demands.

Nokia Lumia 800 – Windows Phone 7

Nokia Lumia 820 – Windows Phone 8

Just because the two devices share a common name when speaking of their OS, don’t make the mistake of thinking that they’re only an evolutionary step apart, because they aren’t. Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 makes use of aspects of the Windows 8 kernel, giving smartphone users a highly updated experienced, which brings with it a host of new features.

The new version of the OS offers a new browser in IE10, upgraded security abilities, Nokia maps with offline mapping and support for dual-core CPU’s, a new look start screen, support for screenshots (at last!) and a whole lot more to boot.

Along with those virtues it’s also fast, very user friendly and will be able to make use of all the apps written for Windows Phone 7, which gives it a decent software library right off the bat – good huh?

Windows Phone 7 is still a good smartphone platform, but when compared with the newer software its drawbacks are far more evident. It’s still fast, still feels natural to use and still benefits from a rapidly growing app library in Microsoft’s Windows Phone Marketplace, but the lack of widgets, support for removable storage and no support for multi-core processors really held/holds the OS back.

Camera

The Nokia Lumia 820 features an 8-megapixel primary camera with autofocus, Carl Zeiss Tessar lens, F2.2, dual LED flash, 1080 video capture and geo-tagging.

The device captures some superb still images and captured movies are of a very high standard too.

The Lumia 820 also benefits from a front-facing VGA camera for video calling.

The Nokia Lumia 800 also benefits from an 8-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, autofocus, dual LED flash and geo-tagging, but the device only captures 720P video and lacks a secondary camera for video calling.

Still images are of a good standard with the Lumia 800, and in the right light are more than print worthy, but the upgraded lens and software enhancements on offer in the newer device raise it up a level.

Both devices are hewn from polycarbonate and offer amazing resilience and peerless build quality. They’re both colourful and easy on the eye too and you can be assured that, as they’re both Nokia’s, they’ve both had to pass the most discriminating drop test in the mobile phone world.

The Lumia 820’s aesthetics offer a newer, curvier take on the original design though, with the camera sitting high on the chassis rather than central as with the Lumia 800. The device looks more up to date overall but shares many of its design traits with its predecessor – and this isn’t a bad thing.

The Lumia 800 is a good looking device. Its colourful chassis with squared off ends brought something new to the market last year and it still looks and feels like a premium smartphone 12 months on. While there isn’t much to separate it from the newer device we feel that the new design gives the Lumia 820 a minor edge though, and as such the round.

Power

The Lumia 800 is powered by a 1.4GHz Scorpion CPU and also offers an Adreno 205 GPU, 512MB RAM and 16GB of on-board storage, though it lacks support for a micro SD card.

The device performs well, with no noticeable slowdown and is great fun for gaming and watching the occasional TV show; provided your eyes can cope with the 3.7-inch screen. Compared to many of the mid-range Android devices on offer it does feel a tad laboured at times though.

The Lumia 820 features a dual-core Qualcomm S4 CPU clocked to 1.5GHz, giving it a huge speed boost over the 800. The device also sports an Adreno 225 GPU, 1GB RAM and 8GB of on-board storage space, as well as a slot for micro SD cards – hooray!

The 820 feels lots quicker than its predecessor, unsurprisingly, and the speed boost and addition of removable memory support gives it a huge edge, not just against the 800, but against many other mid-range smartphones on the market.

The upgraded Lumia 820 is a fantastic device. It’s fast, good looking and packs Microsoft’s new OS, which itself is a marked upgrade over previous iterations of its smartphone software. The device should certainly be considered an option if you’re looking to upgrade, even if you already own the Lumia 800.

That said the Nokia Lumia 800 is a good smartphone too, but one which is soon to be left behind by its manufacturer and OS developer alike. If you’re buying new you’d be mad to choose the older device over the new – but if you can pick one up for a bargain price it’s still a very nice mobile.

Lenovo IdeaTab A2109 Review

Lenovo, a name long synonymous with business and enterprise end personal computers, but in the world of Android tablets, they're regarded as a newcomer – not surprisingly. Just like the other PC vendors making the plunge into the competitive Android tablet market, Lenovo is getting its feet wet with the newly available Lenovo IdeaTab A2109.

Instead of being forgotten amongst the heap of other comparable options out there, this tablet is blessed with some contemporary hardware under the hood, combined with a tempting $299.99 price point. However, will it be enough to steer consumers into its direction?

Design:

Let's be honest here people. On one side, the Lenovo IdeaTab A2109 employs some premium choice materials that we take comfort in with its construction – like its brushed metallic casing. However, for a 9-incher tablet, it looks chubby in size (0.5" thick) and feels bloated with its weight (14.1 oz). Furthermore, its sharp edges don't necessarily make for the best grip for holding the tablet. All in all, it's a valiant effort on Lenovo's part, but it simply lacks the substance and chic design cues to enthrall us.

Trying to press the power button is a test in itself, mainly because it's so flat in feel and lacks any comforting response when pressed. Luckily, the volume control is slightly more distinct, but it's still lacking in response. Looking around the tablet's bezel, it also houses the 3.5mm headset jack, microphone, orientation lock switch, microUSB port, and microHDMI port.

Nothing too peculiar over other offerings, the IdeaTab A2109 packs a front-facing 1.3-megapixel camera and a 3-megapixel fixed focused snapper in the rear – the latter of which can shoot videos in 1080p.

Display:

Of all things, our least favorite part about the Lenovo IdeaTab A2109 is the low quality 9" WXGA 1280 x 800 LCD display it's rocking. Well, it's certainly still detailed enough to make out fine text without a hitch, but it suffers from some serious bleeding around its edges, poor viewing angles, and an overall washed out appearance. In fact, all those factors make it impossible to view outdoors. Clearly, this is the most visible aspect of the tablet that does not get any love from Lenovo.

Even though we're presented with two keyboard options, the stock ICS one and the GO keyboard, we undeniably recommend using the former since the GO keyboard looks like a stretched-out smartphone keyboard. Despite that, both are naturally responsive enough to keep pace with our fingers, but we're still a bit cautious due to the smaller real-estate over 10-inch tablets.

When it comes to the core organizer apps, the IdeaTab A2109 doesn’t deviate from the typical experience, as the calendar, calculator, clock, email, and Gmail apps all follow in form to what we’ve seen constantly in the past.

Out of the box, the tablet is stuffed full of bloatware consisting of apps like AccuWeather, Amazon Kindle, Cut The Rope HD, Doc To Go, ES File Explorer, GameTanium, PokeTalk, News Republic, Norton Security, ooVoo, SugarSync, and Zinio. Also, Lenovo throws itself into the mix as well with the App Shop, which compiles apps that are especially made to run with Lenovo's tablets.

Processor and Memory:

Armed with a 1.2GHz quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor with 1GB of RAM, it's obviously ample enough for nearly all tasks. Not surprisingly, it maintains a responsive performance throughout everything we're able to throw at it – including testing its might with some kind of graphically intensive live wallpaper. Considering that this CPU has shown off its processing prowess before on other tablets, the results of its performance isn't entirely new. However, we're merely glad in the fact that Lenovo decided to outfit this baby with it.

Many people won't be too perturbed by it, but the tablet is packing only 16GB of storage, which translates to 12.92GB of free space out of the box. Luckily, it features a microSD slot for memory expansion, hidden under a hard-to-remove cover.

Internet and Connectivity:

Knowing that it's packing one beastly processor under the hood, the IdeaTab A2109 flies when it comes to the web browsing experience. Whether it's using the stock Android browser or Google's very own Chrome, it establishes a tasteful experience thanks to its smooth and instantaneous navigational operations. Throw in Adobe Flash support with the stock browser, which is preloaded by default, we're able to get that ever so useful desktop-like experience.

Currently, the IdeaTab A2109 is manufactured as a Wi-Fi only device – with word on whether we'll see cellular connected versions. Aside from that specific connectivity feature, it also sports aGPS, Bluetooth, and nothing more.

Camera:

As we've all come to expect with taking photos with a tablet, they're best reserved for only those worst case scenarios when nothing else is present – and the same can be said about the Lenovo IdeaTab A2109! We won't get into the details, but the snapshots taken from its 3-megapixel camera look like muddy paintings lacking any detail and solid colors. Worst yet, we won't even go into the horrendous shots it captures in low lighting.

Whoa! Talk about super slow-motion! Needless to say, we're not all that surprised by the similar results found with its 1080p video recording, but more shocking is the fact that it captures video at the slow-as-molasses rate of 12 frames per second, rendering them unusable! Yeah, we're scratching our heads with this one too.

Multimedia:

Relying on the good 'ol stock Android music player, it has the balanced appeal with its presentation to remain relevant against most other things. However, with its two speakers, which offer SRS WOW HD, it doesn't deliver the potent punch with its output to throttle any sort of commanding tones – though, the available equalizer settings help to ease things a little bit.

Again, it isn't all that unexpected to find the tablet easily handling most high-def videos we throw at it – like 1080p ones encoded in DivX, H264, MPEG-4, and XviD. However, due to its washed out looking display, it doesn't present us with the best viewing experience.

No doubt an appreciative thing to find, the microHDMI port of the tablet enables us to get that oh-so lovable mirrored experience on a high-definition television.

Performance and Battery:

In terms of Wi-Fi connectivity, it manages to maintain a solid connection to a wireless hotspot located approximately 30 feet away.

For those wondering about battery life, it's on par to most comparable tablets we've checked out – meaning, it's enough to last us a solid day with normal usage. Of course, power users will also be able to get by on a day as well, but it'll require a charge prior to bedtime to be at a reasonable level in the morning.

Conclusion:

Being a relatively new player in the Android tablet space, Lenovo clearly has the formula in conjuring up a respectable tablet – albeit, they still have a lot to learn before being regarded as a contender. When we think of value, there's no denying that plenty of it is found with the Lenovo IdeaTab A2109, thanks partly to its contemporary hardware and competitive price point of $300. Obviously, it'll garner quite a few looks in the process, but when it's competing to stand head above water over things like the Apple iPad 3, Google Nexus 7, and Asus Transformer Pad 300 to name a few, it's got an uphill battle to establish itself. In the end, there is still room for improvement in a variety of aspects with the tablet to make it a sure fire selection over its rivals, but it may prove as worthy look for those on a tight budget.

Sony Xperia acro S Review

If there is one thing that smartphones do not get along well with, that would be water. Once inside your handset, it is difficult to get out and can easily cause irreversible damage that warranty doesn't cover.

Yet the Android-powered Sony Xperia acro S is the kind of phone you actually won't hesitate bringing to the beach or putting on the edge of a swimming pool. That's because it is IP-57 certified, meaning that it can withstand a 30 minute dunk underwater at up to 1 meter. Cool, huh?

But the scuba-diving skills are not all that makes the Xperia acro S stand out as the hardware inside it is also pretty decent: 1.5-GHz dual-core processor, 12-megapixel camera, and a 4.3-inch LCD screen with more pixels per inch than you would find on an iPhone's Retina Display. That definitely sounds like a great combination between specs and features, so let's fire the smartphone up and put it through its paces.

Design:

"Pink – it's the color of passion", as Steven Tyler once wisely said. And the guy must be onto something as this pink Sony Xperia acro S looks incredibly attractive – like a giant piece of strawberry candy waiting to be devoured. For people who aren't into flashy colors, black and white variants are available as well. The flat front side of the handset is also worthy of being admired for the screen and the bezel blend together seamlessly creating a pitch-black surface your fingers will surely be tempted to touch.

But once that initial positive impression began wearing out, we started noticing its imperfections. For starters, the Sony Xperia acro S feels quite chubby for a 4.3-incher and definitely gets noticed when its resting in your pocket. It is 12 millimeters thick and weighs 147 grams, which could be partly due to its rather hefty 1,910mAh battery, yet still, we are left wondering why Sony didn't make the handset at least a bit slimmer. And that's not all: the plastic-made SIM card tray is flimsy, the lock key is way too soft, and most importantly, the capacitive buttons are tricky to operate as they are small and positioned too close to the screen.

Yet perhaps we can forgive Sony for these shortcomings as the Xperia acro S has a very nifty trick up its sleeve. The handset is IP57 certified, meaning that it is resistant to dust and water damage. That explains why its ports are protected by removable plastic flaps. Moreover, its screen retains its responsiveness even when used with wet fingers (yes, we tried it), and this is something that even the cream of the Android crop cannot brag with.

Display:

It is truly stunning how detailed images look on the 4.3-inch 720x1280 pixel LCD screen that the Sony Xperia acro S has been blessed with. At 342ppi, pixelation is non-existent and even the tiniest of text is legible, no matter how much we zoom out.

Reproduction across the entire color spectrum is very accurate. Blacks look slightly grayish and whites seem a tad warmer than they should, but not too much to bother us. What's far less impressive are the display's mediocre viewing angles, but at least its outdoor visibility is way above the average.

Nokia Lumia 820, 920 leak out: PureView coming to Windows Phone

The new Nokia Lumias have leaked out and they bring great news for Windows Phone fans - Nokia is bringing its PureView imaging technology to Windows Phone 8 with a monster 4.5-inch Nokia Lumia 920, designed in Nokia’s best N9/Lumia 800 traditions and with great new colors, at least if this here leak proves true.

Along with it comes a lesser specced and non-PureView 4.3-inch Nokia Lumia 820 with equally colorful jazzy looks and probably a more affordable price.

Both the Nokia Lumia 920 and the Lumia 820 seem to focus on the camera with Carl Zeiss lenses on both gadgets.

We don't know the actual resolution of the allegedy Lumia 920 PureView camera, but so far we've heard speculation that a PureView Windows Phone Lumia could sport a 21-megapixel sensor. This would allow the PureView oversampling technology to combine four pixels into one super pixel when you shoot at 5 megapixels, which in turn would mean less noise and better performance in low light conditions, as well as some non-degrading zoom capability (not just plain digital zoom).

Still, in all likelihood this won't be exactly like the monster 41-megapixel sensor on the Nokia 808 PureView Symbian device, but somewhat less capable. On the bright side of things - you don't have to deal with a huge bulge on the back of the device, and the upcoming Lumia 920 definitely looks very, very sleek, much better than the bulky 808 PureView.

We love the colors on both the Lumia 920 and 820. That amazing yellow and vivid, almost crimson red right in the middle seem to set the new trend for Nokia Windows Phones.

As good and veritable as it sounds, this is still a leak so the final handsets Nokia unveils on September 5th might differ from what we see here. Still, to us it seems that there is all likelihood that those images are legit. If so, there will be a lot to get hyped up about in less than a week.

The Apple iPhone 5 is expected to be the biggest redefinition of the iPhone since it launched way back into 2007, changing our perception of what’s a smartphone. For the first time in five years, Apple is expected to bring an iPhone with a larger screen, but it seems that the outrageous demand that everyone expects will face not so stellar supply.

Sharp, one of the three companies responsible for manufacturing the iPhone screen, has encountered “manufacturing difficulties” and lacks a timetable for the shipment of the displays.

This could turn out to be a big issue for Apple as Sharp is one of only three display manufacturers that Apple has contracted. The other two are LG Display and Japan Display, and it seems they might need to make up for Sharp’s slow manufacturing start.

Meanwhile, another day brings us another leaked picture of the alleged iPhone 5, this time side to side with the its older siblings.

It’s taller, the camera is at the center, but otherwise they look almost perfectly identical. We know, though that the back is where the difference should be. Apple is unveiling the new iPhone on September 12th, the date we’re all waiting forward to to put all these rumors to rest.

The Apple iPad 3 for AT&T, or simply iPad, as it is officially called, is Apple's latest foray in the contemporary tablet market - a market the company single-handedly started about two years ago. Although the third-generation iPad remains the same on the outside (not a bad thing), it does bring a lot of improvements on the inside.

First of all, it has a new screen resolution of 2048x1536 pixels, delivering an amazing for a tablet pixel density of 264 ppi. Nokia Lumia 820 is announced with 4.3-inch screen

Nokia Lumia 820 was announced officially today during the press conference held together by Microsoft and the Finnish company. The smartphone is situated in the mid-range class, a notch below the Nokia Lumia 920, yet promises a Windows Phone 8 experience identical to what a high-end device is expected to deliver.

First thing you'll notice about the Nokia Lumia 820 is its colorful outfit and the unibody look of its construction. The smartphone will be available with red, yellow, grey, cyan, purple, white and black. interchangeable shells, some of which allow the device to be charged wirelessly.

The next thing that grabs the audience's attention is the 4.3-inch display enhanced with ClearBlack technology allowing identical outdoor readability to that of the Lumia 920's screen. Its resolution is 480 by 800 pixels, which is a bit underwhelming, yet still acceptable for a mid-range device. Moreover, the screen supports Super Sensitive touch technology, meaning that using some of the smartphone's features is possible even if the user is wearing gloves.

Underneath the hood of the Nokia Lumia 820 runs a dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor clocked at 1.5GHz paired with 1GB of RAM, which leads us to believe that performance won't be an issue with the smartphone, especially knowing how smoothly Windows Phone runs even on less capable hardware.

There is an 8-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and dual LED flash on the smartphone's back, yet features like optical image stabilization and other PureView enhancements have been left out. Oh well, at least 1080p video can be captured at 30 frames per second. On the device's front resides a VGA camera for video chats and the occasional self-portrait.

Other notable features include the 1,650mAh battery and 8GB on-board storage, which can be expanded using a microSD memory card, and an additional 7GB of free SkyDrive storage are available out of the box. In case you are wondering, the smartphone will be available in both LTE and HSPA+ variants. Pricing and availability are to be announced.

Browser Wars: Speed & Benchmark comparison

It's been a while since we last compared the marvelous mobile web browsers that we have at our disposal. So, after many new versions and updates, as well as entirely new offerings in the area, we decided it's finally time to put the leading browsers through their paces.

We decided to make a speed (page loading) and benchmark browser comparison featuring the following contenders...

THE RULES

The first test in the comparison has to do with speed! We're comparing the time needed for all browsers to load a set of web pages. With each browser, we loaded every page three times, with the first time being performed after a restart of the device. The purpose of this is to take into account both first-time and consecutive loading times of the web pages. In the first table below, you'll see the average timing achieved by each device for every page, as well as an average time figure, which is the average of the device's timing for all four pages.

The phone we used for the tests was the Samsung Galaxy S III with Android 4.0.4 ICS. Safari was tested using the Apple iPhone 4S.

All tests were made with Flash turned off in all browsers. Both the Galaxy S III and iPhone 4S were connected to the same Wi-Fi network and positioned at the same distance from the hotspot.

In the second test, we ran the BrowserMark and Ringmark benchmarks on all six browsers. When completed, BrowserMark returns a single "Score" number, while Ringmark shows the number of supported web features and successfully completed tests. Please bear in mind that such kinds of synthetic benchmarks don't always represent the browser's real-world performance.

TEST #1: PAGE LOADING TIMES

Although some may find it hard to believe, our first test proved that Chrome for Android isn't the ultimate go-to mobile browser. At least, not yet. With Ice Cream Sandwich, Google made some tremendous improvements in the system's stock browser, and it looks like this piece of software still isn't willing to step aside and surrender its place to Chrome. Most of the times, the stock ICS browser managed to slightly outperform Chrome, which practically guaranteed it the top spot, shared with Safari. Chrome took the silver with a convincing average result of 9.2 seconds, followed by Firefox and Dolphin. Opera Mobile finished far behind its competitors, but we should note here that the browser loaded the pages almost fully, and was perfectly operational, even though the progress bar stayed at about 90% for a long time. Nevertheless, since we are measuring the time it takes for the browsers to completely load a page, Opera Mobile's results ended up quite poor.

We'd also like to mention that we experienced no failed loading attempts with the iPhone 4S's Safari. With pretty much all other browsers, there were times when the loading progress would just stuck, or the page would not start to load at all, or would take suspiciously long to load completely. We have not taken those failed attempts into account for the the results that you see below.

TEST #2: BENCHMARKS

You just can't make a comparison nowadays without checking out the benchmark numbers. Although we all know that these scores don't necessarily represent the browsers' real-world performance, we're relatively convinced that the numbers do stand for something, although it isn't perfectly what it is. The philosophy behind Ringmark is a step in the right direction, as it simply checks if a browser supports a number of basic and advanced technologies, including HTML 5. It's worth noting that many of these advanced browser/web technologies aren't needed for a full browsing experience yet, but some of them will probably become popular in the near future. Once again, before we go on with the scores themselves, what the Ringmark figures represent is the number of supported web features and successfully completed tests.

CONCLUSION

The tests we did kind of proved what we have previously observed when using these most popular mobile browsers. The stock Android browser in ICS is still a bit faster and smoother than Chrome in most situations, but this doesn't really matter much, as we know that Google is phasing it out, and replacing it with Chrome in Jelly Bean. The rest of the Android gang is also very strong, with Firefox trying to close the gap with the others, and Dolphin still holding strong positions. At this point, it is mostly a matter of which experience suits you best, with some small exceptions. Meanwhile, Apple seems to be doing a good job of keeping Safari on par with the best Android browsers, mixed with the traditional top-notch stability found in iOS.

At the end of the day, it becomes evident that there currently isn't a definite leader in the mobile browsing space, which is a good thing, because it will keep all parties motivated to improve and innovate their offerings.

Samsung Galaxy S III gets four new color versions

The Samsung Galaxy S III, the hottest Android flagship device on the market right now and in the past couple of months, is now officially getting four new colors. The Galaxy S III will soon start shipping in Amber Brown, Garnet Red, Sapphire Black and Titanium Grey, in addition to the existing Marble White and Pebble Blue versions.

The nature-inspired Samsung Galaxy S III is a gorgeous device and we’ve grown in fact really accustomed to and fond of the Hyperglaze finish on the plastic body. Samsung calls it “organic experience” and the same soft glazed plastic is used in the four new color versions. In reality, the Hyperglaze finish also creates the illusion of dual colors, adding more depth to the overall design.

Looking back at the four new colors, we’ve already seen two of them. First, the red one leaked out as an AT&T-exclusive and then black one surfaced around the Olympics. The other two Samsung managed to keep a secret - the titanium grey conveys a cold, business tone while the amber brown looks like the complete opposite with a very warm, cozy undertone.

Samsung explains the meaning behind each of the colors and we've detailed it in the slideshow below, but let's just mention that brown is for classical, organic looks, red stands for delicateness and elegance, black - for deep sophistication and finally grey as a symbol for intelligence.

Now, we wouldn't take it for granted that all four colors will arrive on all markets as Samsung warns that the availability depends on your country, carrier and/or retailer. We'll update you with more on the different colors availability as soon as we have those details.

Apple's thermonuclear legal strategy scores a big win

Apple’s “thermonuclear” strategy against Android scored its first major victory against Samsung tonight, including a giant $1 billion dollar judgement. Though largely in Apple's favor, they failed to win some key rulings and so they won’t be able to slow down Samsung (and other current Android devices) as much as they had hoped.

In particular they failed to win any design or trade dress protection for the iPad. As a result tablet design and most current Samsung phones (as well as other Android handsets) that don't look like the 3G won't infringe on Apple's design patents. For the tablet market in particular this means competition will continue apace.

Samsung didn't win on any of its utility patents, and as a result will not receive any compensation. In contrast to Google's emphasis on prior art and making defense against Oracle about patent validity, Samsung reduced the time spent on invalidity to devote more time to non-infringement arguments and counter claims. Given the vast difference in outcomes between Apple v. Samsung and Oracle v. Google that strategy will probably be questioned.

In fact Samsung's entire legal team will probably face some uncomfortable questions in the coming hours, as their lawyers often appeared less prepared than Apple's legal team (and Google's before them); during closing arguments for example the Samsung team ended up having to skip huge swaths of their defense, despite
knowing for weeks how much time they would be allotted. Skipping some of your main points generally doesn't help you win cases.

Obviously all of this will be appealed, but the current ruling has immediate repercussions. The inability of Samsung’s lawyers to invalidate Apple’s utility patents means that they will be branded a "copycat" even though Apple's trade dress claims were much more split. Ultimately either another Android OEM will have to try to invalidate them in a court of law (Googerola perhaps?), or many other Android OEMs will have to start coughing up some big licensing agreements.

For current devices Google will have to come up with some interesting new ways to zoom other than double tapping and pinching in the mean time - presumably Google and Android OEMs have been preparing for a worst case scenario and have workarounds for the software patents, but what that would be remains to be seen.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 Review

Introduction:

Perfection is something that most manufacturers strive to achieve with their products, and as we all know too well, Samsung isn't a stranger when it comes to delivering the goods. Has it really been 6 months since we first feasted our eyes on the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 back at Mobile World Congress? Yes, and during the time, the note-taking focused tablet has received its redesign to better have it ready to take on the competition head on.

For a second though, it makes anyone wonder why they would even unveil something that wasn't up to the expectations of being a viable competitor. Whatever is the case, the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 is here in the flesh – freshly packing some upgraded internals, while presenting itself as the premier paper and pen replacement. Donning a $500 starting price point, it's sure to fit in nicely with the existing crop, but in a world where novel features are perceived to be tertiary things with consumers, it's going to take more for the Galaxy Note 10.1 to establish itself in the same premier class as its rivals.

Design:

You'd think this "high-end" tablet would brandish an equally "high-end" design to reel in prying eyes. Instead, it's more ordinary than anything else, as it sports the all typical Samsung design; it's an all-plastic affair once again. Strangely, there's a great deal of weight (21.16 oz) and size (0.35" thick) attached to the tablet, which makes it rather cumbersome when compared to Samsung's previous efforts with the Galaxy Tab series. When first impressions make a whole lot of difference, the conventional look of this tablet might prove fatal, as consumers might seemingly overlook it in favor of something else more attractive.

Since the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 shares many of the design elements of the Galaxy Tab series, it doesn't surprise us that most of its buttons are found towards the top edge. Specifically, these include the power button, volume control, microSD slot, 3.5mm headset jack, and IR blaster. With the latter, it's been increasingly commonplace with Samsung's line of tablets of late, which essentially turns it into a universal remote – a great addition to find, of course.

Finally, the bottom side of the tablet is home to the microphone and proprietary dock port, which allows for data/charging connectivity. However, you'll need to purchase an optional adapter or dock accessory to gain video-out functionality.

Perched above the display, a 2-megapixel camera sits ready and waiting to shoot self-portraits and the occasional video chatting session. Along the sides, the tablet's two speakers are directed towards us – allowing for better dispersion of audio.

Flipping it over, the 5-megapixel auto-focus camera with flash is smacked directly towards the middle top-side of the tablet. When 1080p recording is becoming the standard, some might be flabbergasted to know that this is pacing 720p recording.

Display:

Considering that this tablet targets individuals who are big into photo-editing, it's unfortunate to find its display flaunting WXGA 1280 x 800 resolution – underwhelming to say the least. Nevertheless, it's adequate enough for most case uses, such as being able to distinguish fine details with no problems. Furthermore, the 10.1" Super PLS LCD display has enough pleasing visuals, such as a high contrast and a natural looking color production, to make it pleasing enough to look at – though, its viewing angles are a bit weak. Essentially, we notice it washing out when tilted, and when you combine that with outdoor viewing with the sun present, it still requires some shielding for proper viewing.

S-Pen:

Just like the Samsung Galaxy Note smartphone, the standout feature of the Galaxy Note 10.1 is none other than the included S-Pen. Employing Wacom technology, which enables the tablet to distinguish various degrees of pressure sensitivity, it's undeniably the most precise and accurate thing for touch input. Simply put it, the S-Pen dishes up the most natural process for handwriting and drawing. Depending on how much pressure is applied, you can obtain faint or dark strokes – thus, giving us complete and utter control with our movement.

In its attempt to emulate the pencil and paper experience, the S-Pen is fashioned so that it has the distinct look of an actual pencil. Therefore, our fingers comfortably wrap around the S-Pen with little fatigue or irritation after prolonged usage. With the redesign of the tablet, there's now a slot in the rear to accommodate the S-Pen when it's not in use.

Interface:

Looking beyond the usefulness surrounding the Galaxy Note 10.1's S-Pen features, the software experience isn't particularly new, as it's running the company's tailor-made TouchWiz UX interface on top of Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich. Honestly, it doesn't depart in the visual front from previous TouchWiz efforts that we've seen, however, it carries some noteworthy additions. Before we expand on them, the actual core Android experience is soundly intact – meaning, it coughs up the personalization elements we're accustomed to seeing.

Employing software features such as Smart Stay, Share Shot, Buddy Photo Share, all of which have been key items found with the Galaxy S III, it lacks the useful S-Beam feature – mainly because the tablet lacks NFC. As a whole, the interface is simply enough to navigate and comprehend, but its visual presentation is on the cartoony side. For those wondering, Samsung plans to have Jelly Bean ready sometime before the end of the year.

Once again, the Mini Apps tray makes an appearance, which offers some multitasking elements to the mix. Obviously, it's great that they are overlaid on top of whatever we're doing, but its limited selection is by far its biggest disadvantage. Sure, it's great we can browse the web while checking out email simultaneously, but how often are we going to be using the alarm clock, calculator, or task manager?

Similarly, there's the new Multiscreen feature that's available to select applications – these include the web browser, Polaris Office, S Note, Video Player, Gallery, and Email. To tell you the truth, it's basically having the Microsoft Windows experience on the tablet, seeing that the screen splits into two, which allows us to interact with two specific apps simultaneously. Again, there are practical uses for this, but it tends to bog down the tablet's performance. Even more, the limited apps compatible to work with the Multiscreen feature prevents it from truly being a sought out must-have feature. Then again, it's still nice seeing it.

Functionality:

Looking through the usual barrage of organizer apps on board with the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, like the Alarm, Calculator, S Planner, or Email apps, there's nothing terribly new found with any of them. Indeed, they're all optimized for tablet usage, as they employ typical paneled layouts that better increases productivity.

Interestingly, Samsung has opted to provide us with more options with the tablet's on-screen keyboard. Even though buttons may be a bit tiny in size with the full-screen option, we do appreciate its responsiveness and the extra row for numbers – though, we would've liked to see some additional punctuation thrown in with the main layout. Alternatively, we're also given the option to use either the floating or split style keyboards. Between the two, we find the split type to be more practical, as our fingers don't have to stretch as much to reach something.

S-Pen Software:

To no surprise, the S Note application comes pre-installed on the Galaxy Note 10.1. After spending quite some time with the app, we can confidently conclude that is a versatile piece of software that is good for note-taking, but can actually come in handy in a much wider range of scenarios.

In addition to all the basic necessities like multiple brushes, color palette, and a variety of backgrounds, there is also a whole bunch of templates that can be used, depending on whether you are making a presentation, writing down cooking recipes, taking notes in math class, or just drawing random scribbles. Graphics can be imported from the image library or from the web by capturing a screenshot and cropping the image you need.

To make your work look even better, the app supports shape recognition, which can automatically detect hand-drawn lines or geometrical shapes and straighten them out. The feature can be quite useful when drawing tables and charts, or visualizing math problems. Speaking of math, there's also the formula recognition feature that does exactly what you'd imagine. The Wolfram Alpha database is easily accessible should you need a particular formula that you can't remember, kind of like a built-in cheat sheet. It goes without saying that S Note is a pleasure to use with the S Pen. Thankfully, the app is smart enough to ignore when your wrist is resting against the display.

With Adobe Photoshop Touch, which comes pre-loaded on the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, one can manipulate images in a way similar to what the desktop version of the popular application allows. Sure, the capabilities of the software are limited, but for an app that comes bundled with the tablet's purchase, it gets the job done well. Processor and Memory:

Part of the tablet's delay is primarily due to Samsung's choice to outfit the Note 10.1 with a quad-core 1.4GHz Exynos processor coupled with a whopping 2GB of RAM – whereas it was initially slated to offer a dual-core CPU. Although it pumps out some respectable benchmark scores, which are tops in many categories, we're still finding instances of it being choppy with its performance. Particularly, it's evident when navigating the homescreen in portrait or when we use the Multiscreen feature. Seriously, there's no arguing that it has enough horsepower under the hood, but we're once again wondering if TouchWiz is the culprit behind its less than desirable inconsistencies.

We can't complain that the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 is available in 16GB and 32GB capacities, especially when we know it's also packing along a microSD card slot to supplement its storage.

Internet and Connectivity:

Of all the tablets out there, the significant thing that makes web browsing such a pleasure to experience on the Galaxy Note 10.1, is the fact that the S-Pen mimics a cursor. You know what we're talking about – such as being able to hover over drop down elements, without having the tablet registering it as an actual selection. Beyond that, the experience is naturally sound and sweet, since it maintains a high-level performance with even the most demanding of web sites.

For now, the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 is available in 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi only form; HSPA+ and LTE versions are expected to launched later in the year. Although it packs other modern connectivity features such as aGPS and Bluetooth 4.0, it actually lacks NFC. In Samsung's defense, they mention that it would interfere with the radios used by the Wacom technology.

Battery:

Stuffing a 7,000 mAh battery into its body, we're able to get by a good day out of the tablet with normal usage. However, if you're more demanding, it's something that'll more than likely require a nightly charge to keep it at a sufficient capacity for the next working day.

Conclusion:

Before we get down to the meat and potatoes, let's be frank here folks! The Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 is targeting a very specific demographic, such as graphics designers and artists. For them, this should no doubt be high on their tablet must-have list, since its S-Pen features and functionality are vastly ahead of the curve against the horde of other tablets on the market right now.

However, once you take away that, the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 under the surface is your ordinary middle of the road kind of tablet. Specifically, its design doesn't scream genius, the display isn't high-res, nor does the TouchWiz UX experience greatly differentiate from past offerings. Yeah, we can appreciate that it has been updated with a quad-core processor and all, but when instances of slowdown persist with various operations, it kinda knocks away from its high-end status.

At $500, it's sure to get some quick glances from prospective buyers, but it's really going to be tough considering it's in the same price category as the new iPad and Asus Transformer Prime with a 1080p display. Somehow, if people are able to grasp the full extent of what its S-Pen features can accomplish, the $500 spent on it will undeniably be worth every single penny.

My Comments and review of the Samsung Galaxy S3

Please share with you the feel of his first and fastest on the final boss of the Samsung handset as well as the Android world. Android users can more easily upload their photos to Facebook thanks to the latest app update.
Rather than ponderously uploading each photo one by one, the photo upload feature now allows users to select multiple images to upload in one fell swoop then tag and caption to your liking.

The Facebook app also adds the ability for users to create events right on their Android device, something still lacking from the iOS Facebook app.
Facebook messaging also gets an enhancement with the ability to now include emoji characters and photos in your messages.

Opening Pandora's app

Online radio app Pandora also sees an update today on Android, bringing it up to speed with the last month's updates to the iOS app.

The update gives Pandora a revamped UI, improving app navigation and giving it a blue and white color scheme that bears a striking resemblance to Facebook's own.

In terms of actual features, the Pandora app also now lets users browse song lyrics and artist bios on their Android device.

Users can also rate and review songs that they have heard, as well as view similar tracks and artists to find new music.
