As social media evolves, the way the Victoria Social Media Club operates has evolved as well. The SMC Victoria leadership is pleased to announce some exciting changes to our meeting format!

Firstly, as of March 7th, we will begin to meet quarterly. When possible the group will meet the first Wednesday of every “seasonal change” month (meaning March, June, September and December).

Secondly, our meeting format will turn to more of a mixer & informational session. Every meeting will host a “Social Media Help Desk” from 6:30-7pm for all levels of social media users. Bring your questions about how to start up a Facebook business page, what does a hashtag mean and how can I best gather search engine optimization.

The meeting will continue from 7-9pm with a serious time of mingling, interaction and discussion, and up to three people giving 5-10 minute presentations on the latest tool, discovery or even what & how they’re doing social media. (If you have topics you’d like to present, email Melanie Friebel).

Thirdly, bring cash or a food donation which will go to Mustard Seed. Social media is, in part, about community, and we want to support OUR community and those less fortunate.

Finally…the details for our Spring Mixer:
As mentioned, Wednesday, March 7, 2012, 6:30-9pm (Help Desk 6:30-7) at our <del>favourite cabin in town, Cabin 12.</del> Our new location will be at the Veneto Tapa Lounge, on the corner of Douglas and Pandora.

$7 at the door which will cover appies inside and yes, the bar will be open.

One more thing – IT’S OUR BIRTHDAY!!!! Yes. March 2012 marks our 3rd Birthday, so who knows…there might even be cake.

Come one, come all and tell your friends!

Floods, tornadoes, earthquakes – it seems that not a week goes by without news of a major natural disaster wreaking havoc somewhere in the world.

What role can social media play when it comes to responding to these emergencies?

This is the focus of our May 16th meeting, led by Hervey Simard with the Victoria Police Department. His presentation will touch on:

Examples where SM has helped during a major disaster – such as Haiti (to include videos)

SM in Disasters & Emergencies (American Red Cross Study)

5 lessons for Emergency Managers

Ushahidi

VicPD moving with SM: what we are planning to do and what we are already doing with SM

What can you do to help? (discussion)

Hervey Simard is the Information Technology Supervisor for the Victoria Police Department. He is responsible for the design and implementation of the first and cutting edge social media strategy and program for VicPD which has garnered national attention from police departments all over Canada. His experience as an early pioneer of interactive marketing and PR has made him a highly sought after speaker to discuss social media strategies and new technologies, specifically as it relates the world of policing.

Hervey was the project leader for the 2008 and 2009 on-line Annual Report for VicPD which was recognized nationally as an innovative application in law enforcement and he initiated the 2010 Olympic Torch Run mass media communications plan using Twitter and Facebook to fan-out updates and general information during the first day of the run in Victoria.

You can connect with Hervey on Twitter via @HerveySimard.
