Groups are still a great Facebook feature, especially for “private” groups. But for promoting Social Media Club, and most other “public” uses of Facebook, a page is far superior.

This will be the focus of our next Social Media Club meeting on August 24th.

Come meet marketing consultant Don Power , President and Creative Director Michael Barton of mbsvideoproductions,  and Owner/Strategist Cris Vleck of Strategic Insanity.

Don, Michael and Cris will share their insights into video as a medium from 7 – 8 pm. Following a short break, we’ll reconvene and take questions from the audience.

There will also be an opportunity for small break out groups if you have a specific topic/issue you’d like to discuss with others in attendance.

But we have an immense amount of knowledge within our own community. So, given the warm weather, we thought we’d leave July “speaker-less”. That’s right, we are not featuring any particular speaker this month!

Do you have a topic that interests you? Perhaps a short presentation you want to present? Perhaps you want to facilitate a workshop or discussion on a particular topic? This is your chance!

Simply contact Melanie Wood with your idea, then get prepared. There are four classrooms at University Canada West, so bring along a sign for the door (or a flipchart), so people can find you, and you can plug into the overheard projector, use the chalkboard, or just sit around and have a chat – whatever works!

And what if none of the talks people come up with interest you? No problem! The student lounge is open to socialize, chat, and otherwise learn from each other.

In short, this is the “UnMeeting”. We think it’ll be a lot of fun, and a great chance for people to learn lots from our experience community!

We have already confirmed great speakers, such as Scott Stratten (@unmarketing), Dave Olsen (@daveohoots) from HootSuite, and Clayton Stark (@ClaytonStark) from Flock.

Leadership team members Chris Burdge and myself are organizing this event at the Victoria Conference Centre. We hope lots of locals, and lots of people from elsewhere will attend!

The first 100 registrants receive a signed copy of Scott Stratten’s new book, “UnMarketing: Stop Marketing. Start Engaging.”

To the best of our knowledge, this is the first “Social Media Camp” held in Canada. We are still accepting speaker applications.

We’ve recruited two members of our Victoria SMC Leadership Team, Paul Holmes and Chris Burdge, to share their knowledge with you at our June meeting. Both have had considerable success with these platforms – personally and professionally.

Paul Holmes, is President of IdeaZone.ca, a growing internet company, and a recognized authority on using social media for marketing and expanding brand awareness. He is a self described Internet Geek, Blogger, Social Media, WordPress and iPhone Enthusiast, Entrepreneur, Public Speaker, Web Developer, Affiliate Marketer, SEO, PPC, Domainer, Husband and Dad.

He knows a ton about Facebook and will offer you helpful hints on:

Chris is fluent in spoken Japanese with eight years experience working in Tokyo ad agencies in a Japanese-language work environment.
