Join Kate Kelly Smith, SVP, Publishing Director and Chief Revenue Officer of House Beautiful and the Hearst Design Group, as she discusses the importance of reinventing the oldest and largest shelter magazine in America, created by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1896.

Today, magazines are more than just print vehicles; they are brands. Content previously only created for and available in the magazine is accessible via the web, mobile devices, tablets and more. This past October, House Beautiful became the first national US magazine to seamlessly integrate Digimarc Discover technology into its editorial content, allowing readers to bring pictures and articles to life on their smartphones or tablet devices with video, slideshows and other rich media without an unsightly QR tag. With the February 2012 issue, House Beautiful made this technology and engagement tool available to its advertising partners.

It’s an all new experience.

The Secret Language of Influence:

Your Passport to Powerful Persuasion

GOT INFLUENCE? How well do your words and phrases motivate others? Language training is the most neglected area of any management, leadership or business development program. Recent research from the world of psychology can help us increase the potency of our conversations. You will find these skills useful for leading, managing, motivating and most critically, selling your ideas. Dan Seidman will share some specific examples of how his clients use these techniques to improve their business. Come hear about…

Learn how people are motivated to buy in two distinct ways – to attain benefits or focus on solving problems.

Learn how to identify each type, in order to design marketing literature and create sales scripts.

Learn language that eliminates the worst, most toxic forms of resistance that buyers offer.

Who do you know that should be attending this program with you?
Show this to them now and commit to having dinner together, with Dan Seidman and SMEI.

Attendees will receive a free 32-page booklet on The Secret Language of Influence!

APEC’s Impact on the City of Honolulu and Hawaii Business

Honolulu’s Sister City Program

The Honolulu Rail Project and more

Honolulu Mayor Peter Carlisle will discuss the upcoming APEC summit that will bring President Obama and the leaders of 20 other member economies here next month, along with thousands more dignitaries and officials from throughout the Asia Pacific region. Carlisle will also provide an update on Honolulu’s rail transit project and its importance as an alternative to clogged freeways and limited parking spaces. He will also highlight the recent Sister City’s Summit. Carlisle is the 13th Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu. He was elected in 2010, after serving as Honolulu’s Prosecuting Attorney for 14 years. Carlisle is a native of Ridgewood, New Jersey, and has lived in Hawaii since 1978.

Peter Carlisle is serving in his first term as Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu, the 10th largest municipality in the United States. He is the Chief Executive of approximately 10,000 employees in over twenty departments. Not a member of a political party, Peter has been a City and County employee for 25 years including being elected Prosecuting Attorney for an unprecedented four terms. During Carlisle’s administration, Honolulu experienced historically low crime rates which he credits to inter-agency cooperation and collaboration efforts. After graduating from UCLA Law School in 1977, Peter moved to Oahu where he met his wife Judy and raised two children.

SMEI Honolulu launches its 2011-12 dinner series with Hawaiian Air CEO, Mark Dunkerley

Hawaiian Airlines’ President & CEO Mark Dunkerley will discuss our leading local carrier’s brand recognition program, its unique company culture and expansion to new markets. Now in its 82nd year of service, Hawaiian is the 11th largest airline in the nation and employs over 4,000 travel professionals. The company has been rated the best carrier serving Hawaii by Zagat’s, Travel + Leisure and Conde Nast Traveler magazines alongside numerous industry awards.

Prior to joining Hawaiian, Mr. Dunkerley was Chief Operating Officer of the Sabena Airlines Group in Brussels, Belgium. He also served as President & COO of one of the largest providers of ground services to airlines at airports worldwide. In addition, Mark held a variety of management positions for British Airways including senior vice president for Latin America and the Caribbean. Mr. Dunkerley currently serves on the Boards of Directors for the Air Transport Association of America, Hawai’i Visitors & Convention Bureau and Hawai’i Business Roundtable.

Don’t miss this opportunity to hear from an award-winning pilot who has led Hawaiian to become an industry leader in operations, customer service and financial performance during some of the most turbulent times in airline history.

Dear SMEI Members,

I speak for the entire board of directors when I say we are all very saddened to hear about the passing of Stephanie Uyeda this weekend. She was a very special person that touched so many and who so many relied upon and often turned to when we needed a friend, help, or guidance.

Her passing leaves behind a legacy of compassion, caring and professionalism that will create a void for all of us who have had the pleasure of knowing her. She has always been known and respected for the way she lived her life to the fullest each and everyday and her unfailing dedication to SMEI and each of us.

Please know that you all were a very large and special part of Stephanie’s life and she shared more times than I can count how much she loved the SMEI organization and loved and cared for each of you.

While I know that words are only a small gesture of support, I want each of you to know that her high energy and “we-can-do-anything” spirit has touched all our lives making us richer for having known her. She will never ever be forgotten.

Her family is in our thoughts and prayers during these sad times.

My deepest sympathies,

Lee Collins
President – SMEI Honolulu

There will be more information coming over the next days and weeks.
For any who may need or desire to speak with someone, we have received an offer from one of our members, Linda Rose Herman, whose company provides a 24-Hour Compassion Helpline. Trained MSWs and Ph.D.’s in grief counseling answer the phone. There is no identification or special code needed. No explanation is asked for as to how you received the phone number. It is a resource available to talk, cry, and receive comfort any time day or night. People can call as often as they want and even arrange to speak with the same person that they initially speak with. The toll free number is 800-480-1234. The phone is usually answered after just one ring by a live person — no waiting.

Another month, another GREAT dinner meeting and a huge turn out! Thank you so much to Joe Sprague from Alaska Airlines for presenting!

We DO have a bit more to brag about, as not only were we able to get a little insider scoop on the airline business from Alaska Airlines, but we were also treated to a behind the scenes look at Rumfire’s VIP lounge at the Sheraton Waikiki! A really great place to host intimate to medium events with an amazing view. As you can see from the photos, it was an awesome sunset!
