Bathed in winter sunlight, the Lily Collection portrays the natural beauty of the Asiatic Lily…

For this collection I chose to photograph the Asiatic Lily at different times of the day in full bloom, in front of my studio window. The winter light waned and radiated at will throughout the days, until finally I watched what seemed to me to be the perfect amount of sunshine pouring in. Outside, the snow fell, the ground froze, the temperatures dipped below 0 all week, but inside my studio, I had this beautiful collection of images that to me, were quietly defying all of that.

I had a tough time naming this photograph. I could have easily chosen migneco-stl-6888. I could have chosen, St. Louis Downtown View From The Mississippi River and hit some of my keywords for SEO.

Any of those choices would have been enough.

I chose Home, From the River, instead, simply because I’d come home before. I’d come home several times before, in fact. I’d driven across bridges in a car when I drove home. I’d flown over the area when I took a plane ride home. I’d never walked home — at least not from downtown…zikes! that’s a short thought. Anyway, all of those sights of coming home are part of my memory, built in as part of the life that I’ve lived, part of the feeling I get from seeing my home.

Down on the river, sitting on the deck of a great big river boat, I realized that I’d never seen home like this before. I’d never arrived home via the River and looked up at the Arch, up, up, up…into the bright, blue sky and beautiful puffy clouds expanding and collapsing over my hometown, with a big steam stack blowing a set of whistles behind me for the Coast Guard. I’d never done that before.

And, look at the big city view…it says home, to me.

I took my camera along on an adventure with my family to the Landing, an area along the Mississippi riverfront in downtown St. Louis, Missouri. The work took on a scenic quality almost immediately, and (despite my being a tourist as well) I was able to detach myself enough to create some interesting photographs that capture the essence of the area and the visitors I was one among.

The pictures celebrate the joy of summer…a story infused with color, movement, and our happiness — caught in a carefree motion. I watched, breaking down patterns, exploring how we move…overlapping my work just enough to land here, amongst other scenes I created this summer.
