60 years ago today, Brian and the Boys finished recording God Only Knows and mixed it to mono for the last time. To commemorate, the one and only time weve managed to match one of these to the date, theres a new essay on the Pet Sounds sessions page all about the making of the record, every exhaustive detail from writing to completion:
https://beachboyssessions.com/pet-sounds/god-only-knows/

This is the most comprehensive entry in the series so far, for us a payoff to years of hard digging and debating in the trenches to nail down every component of the tracks creation. God Only Knows is a pretty good song, so it felt worth the investment. The full arrangement score (I know weve fallen behind on getting these together) should be available pretty soon in PDF and Musescore format to download from the website.

Alongside that, to take a weird detour, theres a second new essay all about the time Brian teamed up with Dick Reynolds to produce orchestrated covers of Stella by Starlight and How Deep Is the Ocean for his uncle, Carl Korthof. While at the studio with a leftover orchestra, Brian whipped up the track Three Blind Mice on the spot. We love an obscure side story: https://beachboyssessions.com/pet-sounds/carl-and-mice/

On the main Pet Sounds page, there are now general overview credits for that whole era of sessions (which may be subject to adjustments as we cover the rest of the album). Theres more on the way for other albums and time periods. If youd like to keep up to date with our work (as we know some were asking about a mailing list), subscribe to our Patreon to be notified with new posts: https://patreon.com/BeachBoysSessions?utm_medium=unknown&utm_source=join_link&utm_campaign=creatorshare_creator&utm_content=copyLink

Donating is completely optional but welcome if youd like to support what we do.

Quote from: Julia on March 22, 2026, 10:54:04 AM

In short, I dont think what you and I are saying is incompatible, I'm just focusing on why Brian chose to keep certain aspects in the new direction but not others. There's more to the story than solely wanting to simplify the music they had or else they might've done just that in less time and without producing the most bizarre album by a major band in history which killed their reputation. An album of solo-SU style tracks might've been seen as a disappointment next to Pepper but still viable product. But while Brian's MO makes sense in this context, what's really weird to me is why the others went along with it. I can only assume they were just happy to be making any kind of music together as a band again, and Mike specifically was placated with the GH single in his name. Plus, with their next release coming so late, I guess they didn't feel they had time to argue for something else--"just get this one out the door then we can do that R&B shtick Carl's always wanted" was probably the mindset.

I was looking back on what I've written and wanted to add something to this point:

I forgot when writing this that the other Beach Boys DID NOT quietly accept Smiley over SMiLE (or at least parts of it) as their next release. There are those sources I recall reading, which I'd have to look back on to properly cite, that the group almost broke up over Surfs Up in particular not getting released at that time. They wanted that song to be on the next album, probably because they were smart enough to know how great it was, how perfect the TV build-up... Plus, the "deep arty" factor might at least assuage the public that the BBs were still with the times, even if they were no longer leading them. Brian, I believe, is quoted saying the group almost broke up over it, feelings were that strong.

So, considering Brian was outvoted with GV's inclusion on SS, that implies he put up more of a fight against SU. I suspect a deal might've been made: one track Brian opposes shall be included on SS but not the other. He convinced them GV was already a sure bet commercially as opposed to SU's "uncertain" hit potentiality--though personally I think SU was a sure thing. Or else, Brian likely told them SU would come out...eventually. Just like he told Capitol about SMiLE, to keep up appearances and delay conflict as much as possible. (And when Carl got tired of waiting for '72, the conversation went something like: "enough's enough, you promised, this is happening with or without you now.") That's probably how Brian sold things to the group, but for him personally, the reason to surrender GV and not SU was different. The former is at least upbeat so it doesn't "kill" the funny vibe, whereas the latter sticks out like a sore thumb wherever you put it on SS. (Of course, even a solo SU would've been a better standalone single than the SS cuts they released, but that's Brian.) WH-era solo Surfs Up on the '11 boxset is likely him demonstrating some work toward this goal, to convince the Boys that yes...someday...SMiLE/SU will still happen ("so just back off everyone and let me make Friends now!").

I think the seeds of that doubt Brian felt toward SU (especially in a humor context) were manifest from whenever he said those words Siegel quoted in GSHG. Early as December, he didn't sound 100% on board with SU at least lyrically. That would also explain both Brian's trepidation to perform it for Oppenheim (as well as his apparent distress in receiving praises from Bernstein over it). That's not the song/vibe he wanted for the next album, it wasn't funny--therefore, he probably worried it was "good but for the wrong reasons." It's why he wouldn't release it as a single to leverage that stunning publicity spot other artists would kill for. (Not even with the "gatekeeper of hip" Jules Siegel begging him to, to say nothing of his bandmates!) Brian either didn't like the song anymore, even as early as late November maybe, OR he liked it too much to release unless absolutely perfect. For the time being though, Brian was too busy prioritizing Veggies (clearly a favorite of his considering all the work including the Fight, but Van thought it was a weaker track that shouldn't be a single) and everything that song represents.

I suspect Brian wanted SU to be understood in its originally intended context or not at all. The other tracks would've set the scene, with all of SMiLE's bittersweet nostalgia ("historical" or " In My Childhood") providing the necessary "exposition" for that musical "clincher" to really land. This epic "looking back on America" thematic scope was what Brian envisioned with Van from around August-through-October (which I suspect began splintering late Oct/November). And that's the "album" where SU fits as a perfect capstone, bringing all those life lessons from many generations of Americans together in unity, calling for a better tomorrow. That's almost too profound a statement for the likes of Smiley's juvenile silliness (especially she's goin bald) or the PsychSounds skits' irreverent stoner humor. It's easy to see how Brian might at one time have thought these musical feels were related, considering he wanted America to "refound its innocence" (if you read between the lines of Van's quotes) and for us to be enlightened by laughter. However, in reality, it's somewhat hard to balance vibes as different as GV, Veggies, Heroes, SU and even, god-forbid, Fire on one album. I think a lot of fan mixes accomplish it spectacularly despite themselves, but let's be honest you probably wouldn't naturally put SU and Veggies together unless obligated.

Still, great as this "early SMiLE w/ Van" concept is* and much as Brian might've continued to love it on its own terms, I say again that what Brian was making with Van didn't ultimately suit his want for humor.** For this, it had to go, because that was more important to him, at least at the time--maybe looking back he regretted his choice but there was never a good time to go back to SMiLE. Maybe he completely fell out of love with it and almost never looked back, maybe he resented it as the embodiment of his career downturn, maybe it reminded him too much of a partnership that didn't work out and a band that doubted him and a series of bad trips to touch again. I think Brian was content to move on artistically, letting the Smiley (and post) versions of those tracks stand as the final word, but ultimately still had emotional hangups around the whole time period and on some level wondered "man, would that have been a great album if it'd all worked out...if only we could've made it funny!" Maybe at some point he realized a "Pet Sounds 2/Dumb Angel" would've held up better and been better for their careers but by that point it was too late anyway, so it was a reminder of his biggest career regret.***

*And I still think nearly all versions of the reconstructed "pre-Smiley/post-Pet Sounds" or "more Dumb Angel than Smiley" SMiLE album I've ever heard are great--way better than Smiley. (And I've come to love Smiley.) He let the genius thing get to his head and second guessed himself to death. With Smiley, he either got so obsessed with "beating the Beatles" that he took one too many steps in the "freak everyone out" direction and pushed music further than even the '67 public was ready to go...or he deliberately self-sabotaged so no one would ever expect him to again. What Brian did was like the opposite of Kubrick when the latter made Dr. Strangelove. (Which was originally played straight, then became a comedy when the melodrama couldn't withstand the implausibility of circumstances nor the absurdity of MAD itself.) In an alternate timeline where Kubrick fires most of the crew and opts for a Shakespearan theater style reading of the material, with slight rewrites emphasizing dramatic monologues over subtlety, he'd have pulled the film equivalent of a Smiley. Instead, he let the project lean into the direction it was already going, because sometimes the best works of art find themselves spontaneously in the process. I think Brian should've allowed the collaboration with Van, a 4+ month commitment costing thousands of dollars and so far along they were mass producing slicks, to run its course naturally. Make the album you've got but didn't plan for, then do the humor thing later. (But hindsight is 20/20--hey, you think they chose that name because it's when Brian realized he'd backed the wrong conceptual horse?)

**Maybe this means Brian didn't think Van's words were "funny" enough, or too high-brow for the band and/or its audience. It's possible Brian still liked Van's humor personally but realized if the BBs themselves didn't "get the jokes" (or find them deliverable to teeny boppers) it wouldn't work in performance. Humor, especially in Brian's mind, has to be sincerely believed in to work. This is the guy who labored under the careful "pictorial/bisociative" philosophy in which the musician's "vibe/intent" would transfer to the listener. If the group felt humiliation (as Al says), indignation (likely Mike) or uncertainty (probably the rest to varying degrees) the unease would ruin the sonic social experiment he'd planned. (And, based on the evidence, I do believe Brian was aiming to be this profound, whether anyone else considers it a fool's errand or not.) So, Brian not only chose family over outsiders (as is the common narrative), he also chose what he felt this particular project--the humor album that'd make people laugh--needed in order to work.

***Maybe if Brian hadn't burned out soon after, with his first hospitalization as I recall around Friends, he might've been willing to revive that earlier "Journey Across America" direction with Van at some point, now that the humor album had been completed in the way it worked best (as Brian saw it). It's just that when he wasn't caught up in some new inspiration he was being controlled, and/or it would only work with the Wrecking Crew arrangements he no longer wanted to make. As happens in life, one thing leads to another and you're both at different places, it's hard to find the time and the mood's passed, other commitments get in the way and divergent opportunities have to be taken... Long story short, you and your old friend never get around to doing what you always said you'd do together. It's just the way time goes. (Of course, they did finally get the chance in 2003 and I'm genuinely grateful for that, but it's not the same thing as if they'd organically come together again when that "New Age/redeem America" mentality was still in the zeitgeist, which I consider the bedrock of their original collaborative vision. BWPS, whatever one thinks of its individual merits, is for better or worse an ouroboros self-consciously feeding off its own legend, where "[they] changed the outcome by measuring it!")

Just gave a real good listen to Disc 3 of the set and thought I'd relate what stood out to me from what we're presented, and pose a few questions. First off, Mony Mony, Running Bear, Shake Rattle & Roll, and On Broadway all sound very good. Like with the Adult/Child songs, these previously bootleg-only songs sound much better than they ever did. But what's the deal with that lyric sheet that is pictured on the next page of the discography? It looks like it has chorus words for "Shake Rattle & Roll," but the Boys never use those exact lyrics in their version. And the bottom portion of this 'chorus' looks more like "Rock 'n' Roll Music" lyrics than "Shake" lyrics. And to further muddy it there's a big arrow which goes down from the second portion of the lyrics to words that say, "to bridge."

And then below that are lyrics aren't on the recording, and that even A.I. can't find me a song that matches those lyrics. Here they all are, including instructions and the chords written for some of them...

B
Solo -- OO she shake...
She rattle and OO she {were there more words which are trimmed from the picture?)
           She rattle and (xxxxxxxxx)  {yes, words crossed out inside parentheses.}

Duet -- OO she shake
           She rattle and OO she  {appears some words were cut off}
           She rattle and l
                                                      l
Chorus -- Rock, Rockin' and a Roll l
                       Rockin' and a l
Rock, Rockin' and a Roll l
                        Rockin' and a l
                                                      l
                                                      l
                                                      l
                                                      l
                                               to bridge  {the downward line, with an arrow point at end, comes from beneath the "duet" portion}

(F#) Would you like to (E) come wo (I don't know if more words are cut off, or if he started to write the next line there, but decided to write it on another line?)
(F#) Would you like to join my
        Friends and (E) fam-i-ly

My baby likes to hear that rock 'n (again, the rest of the line may have been trimmed from the picture)
                 music
And after school / (wi???) She wants to let her (more lyrics may have been cut off)
And when I take her out she... (definitely more words were cut off here)

So if anyone has a clue as to what's going on here, please let me know!

As for "Short Skirts," I bet it had to have had a melody, and probably some lyrics which were never put to tape (or erased,) as I don't think they would have sung backing vocals on it if there weren't a melody and lyrics to go with it already.

The next track, the backing track of the "TM Song" is perhaps the most surprising to me, as it's just wild! There may be nothing else like it in the history of Rock 'n' Roll? The instruments used are your standard fare, but the orchestration of them is just plain-out wacky. I love it!

Then, with "Honkin' Down The Highway," they certainly didn't do Billy Hinsche any favors by doing nothing, it seems, to enhance his vocal. First off, it's a little quiet, and thus, buried in the mix a bit. And second, it sounds like it's totally dry, without any reverb or echo to flesh it out! I can only imagine they were thinking, well, we don't want to show up the Beach Boys, so we'll leave his vocal unenhanced so that no one thinks, hey, anybody can sing a Beach Boy song! I don't think they needed to worry, though, as even with enhancements I doubt it would have come close to challenging Alan's version for supremacy!

I also love the backing track to "Solar System," as it's piano playing harks back to "Heroes & Villains" and "SMiLE!"

The vocals only version of "The Night Was So Young" is a definite highlight, too. I'd also like to hear a vocals only version of "Rock 'n' Roll Music!" I bet those stacked "AAAAAAAHHHHH's" in the verses would be glorious!

My last thought is on "They're Marching Along." I've never been a big fan of the song, but I was just listening to the frantic piano playing Brian is doing and thinking, I wish there were a different melody and totally different words to this song. I think the track could go in a completely different direction?!

Anyway, them's my thoughts on disc 3.

They said if you play a mono record with a stereo cartridge you'll introduce some unwanted noise, some "rumble." Then they said something about splitting off the signal with a Y cord. And I forgot, but they also said you should really listen to mono with only one speaker, too. But they didn't say that would solve the problem of unwanted noise generated by using a stereo cartridge on a mono record. So I guess I sort of answered my own question? I should just look it up on the old interweb, it has all the answers!

Don't know the technicalities of a mono cartridge, in theory it may be dealing with a mono groove in a slightly different way than a stereo cartridge. But if you just unplug one of your stereo speakers when listening to a mono record, you'll still be hearing the same, it does not give any advantage.

I would 100% pay for a subscription to such a thing.

Yes! That would be so awesome! C'mon, Beach Boys! Be trail blazers again and be the first to make something like this happen! I also still think they could, and should, have made a much larger box set, providing much more studio sessions, more tracks that perhaps only have parts of the instrumental tracks so that we may hear the different parts with even more clarity. And there are other artists out there who are doing box sets with 8 to 12 discs in them. Sure they won't sell as many of those, but they'll make more money on each set, so it is financially viable. Especially if you go a step further in your marketing and do a Kickstarter type of thing, where you present a price point that will make you money, and if enough people don't sign up, then you don't do it, and you've lost no money essentially.

Also, I was just on YouTube listening to the March 24 "Live Audiophile Roundtable: Pet Sounds AAA Mono Deep Dive/1972 Brother Records," which is very interesting! It's about the $100 Pet Sounds vinyl that is taken from the tape used for the Pet Sounds LP that came with Carl & The Passions, which they say is much better than the original master. (Unfortunately the free shipping option they mention is gone now.)

I have a question for you Audiophiles out there about something they brought up, which is, if you have a Mono record then you should listen to it using only a Mono cartridge. They also said there were a few things you could do to mitigate the problems of using a Stereo cartridge if you don't have a Mono one. However, those solutions sort of went right over my head! But then I mused, could I simply just unplug one of the Stereo speakers? Would that solve any possible problem? Anyone here know the answer?

While I'm excited about the new anniversary releases this year, I've always hoped we'd get expanded sessions someday. The highlights are great, but I'd love to have the entire sessions available (they could still be briefly edited in case there is some dialogue they'd prefer to not release to the public). For instance, I've always wondered how the tag for IKTAA developed from the early takes to the final. Was it all Brian, or did one of the session players make a suggestion, like Don Randi did for GOK? Releasing the multi-tracks is another thing I'd love to see, if that's even possible.

TBH I am just happy that this anniversary release has given us the '97 boxset on streaming services. It is by far the best boxset they have ever made (maybe barring the GV 30 Years set), and it absolutely deserves to be widely available in modern formats. I think about the first time I heard it, after buying the set on Ebay almost 2 decades ago, and the joy it brought me. It's exciting to think some new fans will be hearing this for the first time themselves with this release (if they haven't stumbled on these mixes via YouTube already).

And honestly I also have no idea what else they would do with Pet Sounds - that anything was done in the first place is pretty cool. The vinyl releases look like they were put together with care/attention. And given today's market (where everything seems to be streaming/Tik-Tok/etc, I feel like we're lucky to get anything at all - considering the amount of releases this album has already gone through.

In my dream world, I would love for The Beach Boys to make a website/app solely dedicated to the music: where you could be your own sound mixer (where you have a sound board, and 4-8 tracks from each Pet Sounds song, and you can adjust to hear different vocal tracks, different mixes, adjust different instruments depending on the Mic/track). It's not new. It was on the Pet Sounds Sessions box set.

Pretty lackluster what they did here. I didn't buy any of the releases off the Beach Boys site. I already have the Pet Sounds sessions and multiple version of the album on vinyl. What I did buy was the One-Step pressing, mostly because it uses and has the art from the 1972 version, which I've always wanted.

That being said, I'm wondering what else they could have logistically done. Is there anything they can give us that we don't already have?

But yeah, I hope we get something better for Smile. And as grateful as I am that we got *most* of the Adult/Child songs, I have big issues with the We Gotta Groove set. Kind of messed up when my most-anticipated release for like 15 years barely has me coming back to it. Especially when we got the whole proper album in HQ in the leak that followed, which was far more exciting than having to cobble together my own version with the M.I.U. Hey Little Tomboy and other releases of Games Two Can Play and H.E.L.P. is on the Way.

I was mostly pleased with the sound of the new set, until my memory was jogged by something I read on the other board. I now remember listening to the new "Love You" and thinking that many of the backing vocals didn't pop out, they didn't have the same balance to the rest of the track as I remembered them having. But, I shoved it to the back of my mind thinking I probably am just not remembering correctly. Then someone on the other board said that there was more reverb on the backing vocals of the "Love You" songs than was originally there -- which could totally make the backing vocals disappear into the background more! This is not good audio engineering! If they're supposed to be presenting the album as it was released, then why change it by adding more reverb to isolated parts (or whole parts) than was there originally? Why brickwall it into making it sound louder? You know, if we want it louder we can just turn up the volume ourselves, don't you? Please stop arbitrarily messing with the master tapes!

Now... that being said... I'm all for remasters! I'd love to hear things I never heard before! Of course, a remaster could be a disaster! But it seems like that is what they've been doing anyway! Changing the reverb on different elements within the song, or on the whole song; "brickwalling" it to make it "louder;" flying in vocals from a studio version of Back Home into what was supposed to be a live version; and they cut out minutes from some of the Dennis songs they've put on some of the recent sets, much to the detriment of the original songs! If you're going to do a remaster, then do a real remaster. Don't say you're trying to present the music faithfully to the original intent and then not do it! So... if you're going to do a remaster, then really do a remaster, and we can have an argument about how successful it was or not. If you're going to present it as originally mastered, then do it! Use a vintage record as your guide and get it as close to that as possible!

Also, one other change I WISH they WOULD make is with "Caroline, No." Since I've heard the correct speed version I can no longer stomach the sped up "original" version! It sounds horrible to my ears. I wish they would release a version of Pet Sounds with the normal speed version at the end instead of the sped up version! Maybe someday I'll finally be able to burn myself a disc of Pet Sounds like that! <sigh> (I've never been great at computer stuff. And I don't have the setup now to do it, anyway.)

Thanks for the links!

Now... is the Carl version something new that we haven't heard before? Because that's the way I read the email at first glance. But now I have a sneaking suspicion that I have heard it before, and of course, most likely on the previous PS box sets.

But... again, if it is new, why was it not included on the new re-re-release?

Carl sounds very good on the opening lines, but then delivers his last lines way too laid back for my taste. Mike's vocals on that version also sound too laid back. I don't think his vocal here is the same as his vocal on the final version. Was not able to make my mind up about Brian's last verse, though. It could be the same, it could be different.
