No young Brian on old Brian songs. Please.

The old BW songs gain their power from him being, well, old.

To his credit, Dae Lims gets this and has been very careful in his approach. Desert Drive is a full latter day BB version. The Like in I Love You have been given a full band treatment, but its not even a BW melody. His L&M toured the history of BW vocal approaches. Thats all amazing and excellent.

But putting a young BW on MAD, for example, or the Paley tracks it just doesnt work or make aesthetic sense. The young BW wouldnt have written or produced those songs.

The latest episode of PET SQUARES: A GEEK'S GUIDE TO THE BEACH BOYS is finally up: https://youtu.be/KD49RHeHiQE

PET SQUARES #19 is the first of a planned 7-part series of eps devoted to what may be the deepest, most comprehensive dive into the Beach Boys' masterpiece PET SOUNDS available on youTube. Even though the album has been analyzed plenty by many, PET SQUARES' goal is (as always) to offer new perspectives on the Beach Boys' classic work.

Part 1 "Finding A Direction" talks about what Brian was (and wasn't) up to in the months leading up to PET SOUNDS, his collaboration with Tony Asher, and the lyrical themes on the album. The next episode will spotlight the band's and the label's reactions to the music, and the episodes to follow will be deep-dive music and song-by-song analysis.

Enjoy, and comments are always welcome...ones on youTube always help goose the algorithm. My humble little channel just hit 2K subscribers so, many thanks to all who subscribed and also are patrons of the channel. It has taken awhile to get this up, but the goal as always to do a good job. The next two episodes are already filmed so hopefully they will follow before too long. Thanks all!

Last year I started posting commentary on Brian Wilson on the Substack platform, under the title "A Book of Brian."

Link: https://bookofbrian.substack.com

(Or, type "book of brian [dot] substack [dot] com" into the address bar)

For those who are interested, the best way to get a sense of what it's about is to read the "Introduction" (in a Q & A format) and then basically explore what's there. My original intention was to offer writing/commentary on a variety of Brian Wilson and Beach Boys-related topics, but the nature of the Substack platform and how it operates makes doing that hard. As of late, what I've been focusing on is the basics (which are complicated enough as it is): recounting the story of Brian Wilson, step-by-step, chapter by chapter, with a good amount of care, detail and analysis (The most recent posting is about the car-song era of 1963.) There's currently other material in addition to this: (1) some critical commentary about Brian Wilson generally; (2) a close look at the circumstances of the Beach Boys' founding in 1960-61 that questions the assumption that Murry Wilson willingly helped his sons form the group and kindly introduced them to Hite & Dorinda Morgan; (3) a multi-part essay about the difficult issue of Murry Wilson in general. There's also an extensive list of Beach Boy reference material/information sources.

I've been aiming to post a new chapter at the rate of roughly once per week, and each installment is usually supposed to take about 10 minutes to read.

This is sort of an experiment; to see if it's possible to publish extended writing on the internet, using a platform which is convenient, but really not designed for what I want to do but more for bite-sized blogging. I hope and expect to keep it going at least through to the end of 2024. Also, a reminder that this material is offered for free. There's an unpaid subscription option (meaning that you get new writings delivered direct to email) but anybody should be able to access it via home computer or phone. I'm grateful for subscribers, but subscription isn't necessary.

I have had to disable comments on the site for the usual reasons. However, if anybody has any comments or criticism (provided it's reasonably civil) they can reach me here on this board. I also maintain an account on the Endless Harmony board. Some readers have chosen to communicate with me though the Substack site itself (email, basically)

In these times, we all have to be self-promoters, so I'll just say that the writing ("content") is well-researched, well-reasoned and pretty good. I'm confident that serious and dedicated Beach Boys and Brian fans will discover plenty with which to engage and think about (even if readers don't agree with my views)

Thanks, and I hope at least a few Smiley board readers find the time to read some of my stuff and enjoy it.

And ultimately what happened with Smile cannot be reduced to a few sentences in conclusion. And thank you again for pointing out one of the factors that has the Smile narrative trying to be bent and shaped in recent years.

I think official narratives - for businesses, or institutions - have their purpose, and I don't think I'd be interested in trying to change the official story (to the extent there is one), which would be impossible anyway. However, it might be possible to offer informed, well-reasoned (or well thought-out) analysis for its own sake, to a tiny readership or interested and open-minded fans. Let's see what happens.

I'm resurrecting this comment from last year just for the purpose of following up on what I said above about the possibility of providing new, well-reasoned analysis for its own sake.

I've been trying to do precisely this, actually, for the past few months - since September 2023, I think (?) - on a site called "A Book of Brian". It consists of detailed commentary on the life and career of Brian Wilson, as founded on the information that has so far been made public over the decades as well as my own take on it.

I've been using the Substack platform as a convenient means to get the writing up on the internet. Here is the link:

https://bookofbrian.substack.com

If you don't want to click on it, type: bookofbrian [dot] substack [dot] com into your browser address bar.

Although the Substack site is designed for paid subscriptions, I have things set up so that all the material is FREE for anybody to read.

I'll start a new thread shortly to offer a few more comments about this project. Perhaps he took the OCA version (same vocals), and removed the electric keyboards and added the orchestration.

I prefer the orchestrated version; the VDP keyboards (or whomever is playing them) on the OCA version are very fake-90s-keyboard sounding, almost a bit like 80s Bruce Johnston keyboard arrangements, one of the few dated elements of the OCA album as a whole despite otherwise being mostly quite timelessly-orchestrated/arranged.

But the OCA version on the deluxe set from a few years ago obviously has much, much better sound quality than the murky orchestrated version that has circulated for years.

I dug the deluxe set with the bonus backing tracks, but I've always wondered why they didn't go with vocals-only rather than instrumental-only, as I think Brian fans would much prefer the vocals. Perhaps VDP wanted to showcase his part in the album more.

As interesting as these hypothetical fan creations can be, they are definitely kind of polarizing to some as they aren't truly "authentic". Personally if I enjoy the creativity behind them (such as Dae Lims' creations) I can comfortably make the distinction between fact and fiction.

All that said, I think the real meat of how artificial intelligence technology will be most constructively implemented will be in the more subtle nuances of audio editing. It will probably benefit from making basic mixing, mastering and overall production easier and more efficient. Using the MAL technology we can finally start expecting to hear proper stereo mixes of songs such as "Good Vibrations" whose multitracks have long gone lost. Dae Lims himself put out a darn good fan stereo mix of "The Little Girl I Once Knew" that gives you an idea of what
the technology can do.

Yes, Perhaps it is something very special related to the Documentary. Just wild guess of course, perhaps due to fact from time announced and when the documentary will be released (still tbd) the director with Beach Boys approval are doing some kind of AI section of videos, or new audio release of some still in the can or newish songs or something. Sure that could just be wishful thinking. But thinking of something along the lines of what was done with the Beatles, or video Billy Joel did with his new song released (did some cool AI presentation of him singing new song over years etc.).

The documentary seems like perhaps it taking longer, than they initially planned to finalize and release, so maybe in for a very special treat. Only thing can find so far that The Beach Boys Documentary maybe released in 2024 on Disney+ and was being directed by Frank Marshall (who is Married to Kathleen Kennedy, who happens to be President of LucasFilm and part of Disney). So they would for sure have access to all the best technology and expertise.

Anyway. Very excited to find out if that little line is true and or what it could be. Will try and keep my expectations low, but it is a very intriguing line and imagination running wild.
