We had a bit of slow start as we got the protective chain that guards the moorings wrapped around the prop... ooops... oh well
There isn't much to tell on the way down, however after tying outside the old dry dock we managed to find a spot on the tescos moorings at Bulls Bridge.
Baldockbwas worked originally by the Grand Union Canal Carrying Company and was built in 1947 by Harland and Wolf. After much changing of hands, Baldock was worked by Willow Wren and currently carries her livery...

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-N1t2Vup4pgg/TisMwDTkHvI/AAAAAAAAAyY/keADE9sv7qs/s200/baldock%2B1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5632609778617556722" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_jyiek619d8/TisMv3tfG0I/AAAAAAAAAyQ/Pk4SdusHnoM/s200/baldock2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5632609775505054530" />

EA licences

I am fed up with hearing how the EA have suddenly imposed a new stealth licence on boaters. The legal situation has been since 1932 that all boats being used on the River Thames had to have a licence. The only recent argument has been what is the River Thames, most thinking that Marinas were exceptions.However about 5 years ago it was proved that private water didn't exist. So if 5 years and the amount of publicity in waterways press, and all the information sent to all BMF members and also other non members and marinas... i am lost at the excuses being made.. If you can't afford a boat then sell it.... it is no different for a car...

Bike !!!

Am not sure if this is strange or not. Whilst on the way to work, I saw a fully kitted out cyclist on the side of the road. He had a pair of hand shearers and was attacking a hedge on the side of the room. I assume the edge of the shrub was just to close to the edge of the road. As he had them in his bag I assume he attacks the local shrubery on a regular basis... So if you are worried that your shrubs are disappearing it might be the mystery cyclist.

School Reunion

Well it finally happened, the renunion. The return of class 1990 back to its spirtual( or liquid) home. What a great night. It was lovely to see so many faces from school, the nervousness of trying to remember people just diappeared. Most hads't changed a bit, it was like steppping back 20 years.
It was also great to see many people return from far and wide. Some came from Holland, Wales, others still lived round the corner. we cauhgt up with news, some danced others, swapped stories and maybe the odd number or two.
it was a tribute to Chris who organised it and all those who turned up and made the party what it was, thank u all...Pics

Cleaning Day

Cleaning is one of life trials.. just someting you have to do. I like to do this to loud heavy music.. Muse is my particular band of choice. I have two bits of advice to this. One is, do it naked.. if you get dirty it doesn't matter you can just jump straight in the shower. The second piece is don't use to much cilit bang in a confine space, it makes you cough like mad as it produces so much fumes. I am now trying to recover with my head out of the front doors breathing in as much fresh air as possible.

School Reunion part2

Things are getting worse, even the primary school pictures are coming out of the woodwork.. The scary thing it has been now 20 years since the end of school, well I did stay on for A levels.
Come Septemeber some 80+ of us will be heading back to the old town like a pilgramge, to worship at our Mecca which was the rugby club. I spent my birthday there,as many of us did and like most was all a bit hazy..
HOwever I don't what is more scary... the pics coming out of the woodwork from when we were so much younger, or the fact I can't remember half the names or faces.

Spring has sprung

I have heard my first bird song in the evening.. A rough calculation and I have travelled nearly 300 miles and gone through just over 200 locks.I have had a fabulous time. I have discovered the Caldon Canal, which was a great place to visit. We even managed to take the boat through Froghall tunnel. The Macclesfield was stunning as was the Marple flight too. Even the canals leading into Manchester were as not as bad as everybody thought. I popped down several arms included the Welford and the Market Harborough. I have meet some lovely people and even sat in the pub to long drinking with them.
I should also mention those we have helped me along the way. The Yeadons, both Mike and Maggie, who separately and together have crewed cooked and lock wheeled for me and with me. To Robert and Mary, who Rob helped us for two days in and around Manchester, Mary who also did some washing for me and we had two lovely evenings with them. Helen who helped me into Birmingham, lock wheeling and generally putting up with me, who’s running style is legendary.
A special mention must be made of the T’s, who boat I affectively boat kidnapped for the whole time and this trip would not have been possible. They trusted me with the boat for all this time and I managed to destroy two fenders, in the process. I can’t thank them enough, for letting me borrowing their boat. The boat has been brilliant and is ideal for long term cruising. I soon passed the local football ground, not quite as spectacular as old trafford.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ijIJ5Prqut0/St3FChCwC_I/AAAAAAAAAvc/jUmr6C5PNQo/s200/football.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5394684575680039922" />

Along side it was this lovely weir

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ijIJ5Prqut0/St3FDwA5YJI/AAAAAAAAAv8/pGNjvgiqCRI/s200/weir.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5394684596878663826" />

As I steamed through Leicester as it is river there, I passed some nice bridges, this one had a pub called the "Soar Point " on it, very apt maybe..

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ijIJ5Prqut0/St3FDsyCoMI/AAAAAAAAAv0/_4WHdzT0Ie8/s200/soar+point.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5394684596011049154" />

The locals have made an effort to tidy up the area and this was just one example.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ijIJ5Prqut0/St3FDK0o9RI/AAAAAAAAAvs/UsZh6abs2ac/s200/lock.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5394684586895144210" />

The view from the lock though was quite stunning. In fact Leicester is surrounded by gravel pits, so is able to accommodate all water sports.. It was almost a shame as I left the edges of Leicester and tied up for the day.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ijIJ5Prqut0/St3FCwnbNAI/AAAAAAAAAvk/pN6G0x6xXR8/s200/park.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5394684579860395010" />

Aylesbury

We shuffled the cars around last night so when we got to Aylesbury, we could get back to mine and return it to the marina.

Today was just a short hop from Kilby bridge. It had good road access as Mags was coming over for the weekend. She did have to work Saturday and I have my driving experience day as well.

We set off not to early and made good chugging back to Foxton and beyond. The views of the canal at this time of year are brilliant, I think I prefer this time of year to any other, just when the leaves are turning.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ijIJ5Prqut0/StnwVHQbOlI/AAAAAAAAAt8/JWewxD6ElcA/s200/view.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5393606274268740178" />

We also passed an old manor house, we couldn't see the main house, but you can still see the church.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ijIJ5Prqut0/StnwVdUMmJI/AAAAAAAAAuE/LozUdrKxlUw/s200/church.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5393606280190138514" />

We pressed on as soon hit a very spread out flight of locks, it didn't help the beams were not balanced properly, so they kept swinging open, however there was plenty of water in them...

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ijIJ5Prqut0/Stnwt2pL-0I/AAAAAAAAAuM/w7Zzi39CydU/s200/lock.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5393606699305925442" />

There are also some nice bridges, which are numbered and named, this one was particularly nice.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ijIJ5Prqut0/StnwUR2_6EI/AAAAAAAAAts/MJZgbGWzMu4/s200/bridge.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5393606259935012930" />

We soon hit Kilby bridge

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ijIJ5Prqut0/StnwUrqzHDI/AAAAAAAAAt0/P49INjIUGaM/s200/kilby.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5393606266863164466" />

Then it was off to the pub, my first one of the day.... When we awoke it seemed an even better idea as it was raining. We paid for last night and tonights mooring and also we managed electric plug into, saves us having to run the engine.

We took a stroll down the hill into the town passing what looks like a gate house which is now an office.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ijIJ5Prqut0/Stc25IxBfAI/AAAAAAAAAr8/qPGZBT-oggM/s200/house.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5392839434033003522" />

The town is full of old coach houses some are still pubs others now are shops. The Swan has one of the oldest wrought iron sign in the country.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ijIJ5Prqut0/Stc_4rI7neI/AAAAAAAAAtk/xwhoh81jlJo/s200/swan1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5392849321684868578" />

We thought the Angel was a bit saucy...
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ijIJ5Prqut0/Stc2ZnUY81I/AAAAAAAAArk/2Lv6thLQUBM/s200/angel.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5392838892478591826" />

I have the usual picture of the church, the working boat will follow.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ijIJ5Prqut0/Stc2ZL0ed4I/AAAAAAAAArc/vbIiiQkroiA/s200/church.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5392838885096978306" />

The town is very well stocked with shops, local butchers, bakers etc live along side the large supermarket.

Back at the marina one of the blogs I have been following Hadar are tied up here too. We had the usual problem of trying to find the lockie, otherwise we would have been through a lot quicker.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ijIJ5Prqut0/StYq22XzteI/AAAAAAAAArE/9HKpPA1rsD8/s200/foxton1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5392544725619422690" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ijIJ5Prqut0/StYq2Xe4TnI/AAAAAAAAAq8/VRBircP5jW8/s200/foxton.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5392544717327584882" />

As soon as we were through Foxton we turned right and headed down the arm to Market Harborough, which going back all the big gardens is the land of sit on mowers.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ijIJ5Prqut0/StYq2CMsy4I/AAAAAAAAAq0/pdmCXfYagXo/s200/harborought+arm.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5392544711614188418" />

By the time we go to the basin, we didn't find a space on the towpath moorings, so stayed in the basin, saw Hadar there but no-one was home. Think the plan is to stay here for a till Friday morning and then head off. As can have plug in and is a nice mooring for the town...

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ijIJ5Prqut0/StYq13ognhI/AAAAAAAAAqs/qAnuWoQQxj0/s200/harborough.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5392544708778040850" />

Welford

We started from the top of Braunston first thing. It was feeling very atumunal as we awoke to this.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ijIJ5Prqut0/StYhCyGEI4I/AAAAAAAAAqM/8ecq3nWK3Qw/s200/morning.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5392533935513412482" />

After a quick hop through the tunnel we turned left and headed up the Leicester section

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ijIJ5Prqut0/StYgbbodK_I/AAAAAAAAAqE/hiecBnUCAIE/s200/light.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5392533259468745714" />

We then headed for the Watford flight a mixture of single locks and staircase. Mags was over for the day so we had an extra pair of hands. We even met a boat after a couple or lock and worked down together. It was also our real first day of dampness as it mizzled all morning.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ijIJ5Prqut0/StNRGtiGdGI/AAAAAAAAAoU/kUm-0LhhGxs/s200/hatton2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5391742354636305506" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ijIJ5Prqut0/StNRGGiIAzI/AAAAAAAAAoM/kMvK0gVmSV4/s200/hatton1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5391742344167424818" />

We made good time and we were chugging quite nicely. There were still the reminders of the old and the new

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ijIJ5Prqut0/StNRG6pzc6I/AAAAAAAAAoc/_Svg_IJJYrE/s200/old.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5391742358158275490" />

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ijIJ5Prqut0/StNRHCvj27I/AAAAAAAAAok/2VjUo9BG-iY/s200/new.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5391742360329903026" />

We also had another flight before hitting Long Itchington and the tie up for the night.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ijIJ5Prqut0/StNRHVL2KEI/AAAAAAAAAos/Nl_AzQq0910/s200/flight.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5391742365280380994" />

We were meeting the T's for a drink or two and also they were kindly acting as taxi service for Mags to return to her car. You can't believe that in 15 mins you have left the city centre behind.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ijIJ5Prqut0/Ss-dRgVX4eI/AAAAAAAAAnU/0tGRoGxQYgQ/s200/worcester+and+B.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5390700203048690146" />

You do follow the railway for quite a while, for a moment I was not sure which tunnel to go through..
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ijIJ5Prqut0/Ss-dRU6KhGI/AAAAAAAAAnM/uVYw9ZvukQU/s200/two+tunnels.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5390700199981778018" />

I wonder if this is a half bar of chocolate...
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ijIJ5Prqut0/Ss-dQ_jfEtI/AAAAAAAAAnE/BvxNFpzZJ4w/s200/cadbury.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5390700194249511634" />

This is the Bournville factory, I am sure a few ladies would like to visit.

I soon reached the junction of the Stratford upon Avon..
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ijIJ5Prqut0/Ss-dQt9KTAI/AAAAAAAAAm8/BMn1gBK9c2w/s200/junction.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5390700189525363714" />

I had decided to moor up nearer to Kings Norton so i went down to the tunnel and turn in the winding hole. As I approached I got something around the prop again. So i missed the winding hole. It took me a while to clear it, I found most of a bike wheel. The other problem was that the winding hole was not full length. So I had to reverse 1/2 mile, not a an easy task, it took me over and hour.

Well I met Mike and we went for a couple of pints and some food all less then £15. Well off to Lapworth tomorrow...

Return to Gas Street

Well it was a welcome return of chugging. As the Birmingham new line was so boring I thought I would take the old main line, known as the Wolverhampton level..

It included the traditional disused warehouse.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ijIJ5Prqut0/Ss4qqTUWiYI/AAAAAAAAAms/G6VTzOt90g8/s200/warehouse.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5390292710237571458" />

There is some impressive development a long the way too.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ijIJ5Prqut0/Ss4qqIewnhI/AAAAAAAAAmk/TztzEZ03wH0/s200/new+houses.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5390292707328433682" />

As I went over the aquaduct I got a brief glimpse of Netherton Tunnel
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ijIJ5Prqut0/Ss4rnIpXMlI/AAAAAAAAAm0/Nh7mCzaTYYg/s200/nethrton+tunnel.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5390293755344925266" />

A bit of a surprise was how long I followed the M5 for, but I soon left it behind and was heading for Smethewick Locks.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ijIJ5Prqut0/Ss4qXUvn6UI/AAAAAAAAAmM/tF7zhlubRXs/s200/M5.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5390292384202877250" />

However a small delight was the Engine arm

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ijIJ5Prqut0/Ss4qX2cxlMI/AAAAAAAAAmU/cF-Ujovns7A/s200/engine+arm.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5390292393250624706" />

Just above Smethwick locks

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ijIJ5Prqut0/Ss4qXLg1PFI/AAAAAAAAAmE/IwuAabmab4Y/s200/smethwick+lock.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5390292381724916818" />

Just after the locks you head back onto the Birmingham New Main line and back into Birmingham. I have tied up again in gas street. Am off down the Worcester and Birmingham tomorrow. Heading for Kings Norton junction, where I am being joined by Mike for the week...
