Kuba started out as a graphic designer for print media but in the early 2000s the evolution of internet and online possibilities made him switch to digital.

The first few years were mainly about template design, weird flash concepts and total creative chaos for clients and agencies. After few years in webdesign he developed his skills towards online campaigns and communication strategies. As an interactive art director and later on creative director he handcrafted or guided awarded campaigns for leading brands in the Polish market.

His work is always trying to underline project or brand essence making the final piece very devoted to the subject. However his favourite themes are concentrated around futuristic visions, modern interfaces and rich visuals. Today Kuba focuses on user interaction, experimental interfaces and motion design.

Kuba’s creative background include recognized ad agencies and top clients such as: DDB, Euro RSCG, British Airways, IKEA, McDonald’s, L’Oréal, Peugeot, Procter&Gamble, Unilever among others.

On a side to everyday agency work, Kuba cultivates his childhood passion for illustration. As a result he was an author of children book illustration, few posters and tshirt designs.

This agency came from the meeting of three persons.  Paul Ressencourt (Creative Director), Julien Alirol (Art Director) and Simon Roché (technical Director). They worked naturally together from the beginning, sharing the vision of graphic design and tastes for Fine Arts. They decided to combined their knowledge in graphic design with the experience in webdesign and SEO of Cyrille Baeckelandt. Together, they regroup a set of skills that allows them to achieve complete identities. The head office is located in Caen, but their clients come from all over the world.

The team behind Murmure has an insatiable love for new ways to communicate. In order to constantly renew graphic design standards, they draw their inspiration from Art world and life in general. Today we feature the identity design of the 99% conference 2012. Their Identity designs which are designed by Matias Corea, Raewyn Brandon and Jocelyn K. Glei are pretty stunning and they got my attention instantly. The identity includes stickers, posters, bussiness cards, and handbags. Identity Designs along with cool and inspiring interactive prototypes of iPhone and iPad apps is the portfolio of Guiherne which is a recent graphic design graduate from the VCU in Virginia. We selected this designer to showcase today becuase his works are quite different and fresh. As you can see from his portfolio below he designs colorful and minimal designs mostly, although every single peace of his work is elegant and creative.

Guilherme Dultra Villar is a recent graduate from the department of graphic design at VCU in Richmond, Virginia. His work spans from identity designs to interactive prototypes of iphone and ipad apps. A Brazilian native, Guilherme has been featured on the most recent edition of “Typographic Design: Form and Communication” and recently participated in this year’s Art Director’s Club in New York City. This young designer has a phenomenal eye for detail and simplicity and has particular interests in identity systems, exhibition design, typography, information graphics and strives to create design solutions that are clean but more importantly effective.

Guilherme’s swiss style inspired work reveals a remarkable attention to uniform design elements and strong, pure, geometric shapes. In many aspects, his projects touch on the core proposals of the De Stijl movement. The neoplasticism, as proposed by De Stijl artists, is about elementarism and geometry not only as a form of exploring the potential of the fundamental elements, but as a pursuit of beauty and harmony, hinting on a more mystical belief in ideal geometric forms. His Fortaleza 2020 Olympics project is a great example of that minimal design influence which he so successfully mastered to create effective communication.

Personal Identity Designs

Because Guilherme is such a different and difficult name to say in English, I decided to have the pronunciation be my workdmark in my personal identity. It is both functional and minimal which allows the focus to be on my projects and achievements.

Maymont Park Signage

A grid was created from a 3D isometric view of a cube which was then turned on its side. This triangular grid served as the guides to the building of the signage shapes. The signage system would be made out
of a single sheet of rusted salvaged steel to give a worn texture that would ideally mimic the surrounding brown palette of the woods. The geometric quality of the signs would work to detach them from the organic, free-flowing shapes of nature. The ultimate goal is to create a signage system that re-purposes
old steel and harmoniously incorporates them into a park environment.

Bas Van Der Veer

A six page interactive exhibit was created to showcase Bas van der Veer – a Dutch industrial designer. The spread includes a biography, timeline, and highlights his award-winning Raindrop project. Raindrop is essentially a water barrel which fits around drainage tubes. The barrel stores rain water for garden use and eliminates wasting precious tap water.

Bas van der Veer is a passionate, and ambitious young designer from Jorwerd – a small Frisian village in Northern Netherlands. In his last year at the Design Academy Eidhoven, the Raindrop project received the René Smeets Award for the best and most professional graduation project.

Fortaleza 2020

A fictional 2020 Olympic Games project for the city of Fortaleza in northern Brazil. An identity system was created around the primary and secondary logos which emerged from the concept of unity and the environment. The diagonal rectangles can be seen as fanning out from its center to take the circular shape of the sun, or windmill. They can also be seen as coming together, overlapping, and uniting. My goal was to combine both the philosophy of the Olympics games and the qualities, traits, and characteristics particular of Fortaleza

Backyard Design with Pool by At Casa

Here is a creative idea for a small backyard design with a pool by Bestor Architecture. Notice how the pool and the house are positioned at an angle. This formation effectively splits a small and very private backyard into two separate areas. One side for after-pool lounging and bonfires by night and the other for friendly gatherings and meals. A fabulous al fresco feature, Cascade is a waterfall-inspired glass wall overlooking a landscaped garden in Toronto, Canada, on the shores of Lake Ontario. This 10-ft. long, seven-ft. high glass installation was meticulously crafted of 77 ladle-poured glass blocks, shimmering in various tones of blue and green. Even the texture of water is echoed in the piece. And fittingly, the glass wall was incorporated into a real waterfall, which lets the muse flow freely over the glass.

Surreal Artworks By Hong Yi is an amazing collection of truly interesting random artworks that we dont think you have seen in the past. Hong Yi grew up in Sabah on the beautiful tropical island of Borneo. She dreamt of becoming a cartoon animator and Lion King is still her favourite cartoon. One of her best friends gave her the nickname ‘Red’, because her surname sounds like the word ‘red’ in Chinese.Red’s paintings of Yao Ming, painted with a basketball for a brush, and Jay Chou using coffee and a cup, were Youtube hits, giving her 15 seconds of fame on CNN, ABC, the Daily Mail, Gizmodo and other media around the world. Her previous work includes portraits of Ai Weiwei using 100,000 sunflower seeds and Justin Bieber using gochujang (Korean chilli paste). Red is currently experimenting with unconventional materials and exploring structural design principles for her next projects.

Red holds two degrees from the University of Melbourne (Architecture; and Planning and Design). She was awarded a Melbourne Abroad Scholarship to study at the Technical University of Delft in the Netherlands, which broadened her perspective and exposure in the field of European architecture.She is currently working in the Shanghai offices of HASSELL, an established Australian architecture firm. She absolutely enjoys being an architect by day and an artist by twilight.

Surreal Artworks: Jay Chou Coffee Stain Portrait

The project’s inspired by the opening line in Jay Chou’s song, ‘Secret, Inspired by the opening sentence, about lifting up a coffee cup off the saucer, and the ending of the song about fragmented pieces,this is shown through the portrait as a whole – how it’s formed by many individual rings, many of them broken and imperfect.The song is about traveling 20 years back in time and is reflected through how the portrait looks like sepia-toned photo. Autumn is shown through the brown colours of the portrait, giving it an old, rustic feel.The portrait was done using coffee cup stains. Quite a tricky medium to use – too much water and the rings wouldn’t form easily, very little water and you’d have to be precise with where you place the cup coz the rings would pretty much be permanent.

Posters like the ones we are presenting today are really hard to find. Today we showcase the best posters we have ever seen which are created by Mike Joyce who is a graphic designer from New York City. Mike has started an ongoing project called Swissted in which he has created more than 200 posters inspired by punk rock and swiss modernism. Arent these the most beautiful poster designs you have ever seen?

Swissted is an ongoing project by graphic designer mike joyce, owner of stereotype design in new york city. drawing from his love of punk rock and swiss modernism, two movements that have (almost) nothing to do with one another, mike has redesigned vintage punk, hardcore, and indie rock show flyers into international typographic style posters. each design is set in berthold akzidenz grotesk medium, all lowercase. every single one of these shows actually happened.

Mike Joyce was born in the host summer of 1972 in Troy, New York rendering him Troy-Bilt, just as reliable as the company’s signature rototiller. Thirty years later Mike foundedStereotype Design in New York City, a graphic design studio developing projects for commercial, cultural and corporate clients. Stereotype’s work has been featured in over forty publications including Print Magazine’s 30 under 30, exhibited in art directors club’s first young guns show and also selected for the permanent collection of the library of congress.

In 2004 Mike gladly returned the favor to the ADC by co-charing Young Guns 4. Mike has also judged awards shows for the type directors club annual, art directors club annual, the alex awards and finally the toronto based Coupe Magazine.

In 2005 Stereotype licensed a line of typographic t-shirts to 2k Gingham, a cutting-edge LA clothing company. The t-shirts, based on TV Guide movie summaries are sold in speciality boutiques around the world. The following years the shirts were transformed into a multimedia art installation in the The Netherlands titled “A thousand things”.

Mike also teaches typographic and design to third and fourth year students at the school of visual arts and may be the only graphic designer with absolutely no interest in collecting sneakers.

Shed Labs started a few years ago when Wellington Payne and Robbie Cobb were hiking in Panthertown Valley, a trip they still take a few times a year with a close group of guys. Robbie and Wellington knew each other from college and were friendly but had never spent an extended amount of time together. On the trail, a person has plenty of time talk about things they like or don’t like, so in this trek Robbie and Wellington figured out that they wanted a lot of the same things — to work with their friends, make art in a style and medium they enjoyed, do work for good people and to just get better. So on the side of little greenback mountain Shed Labs was born.

Wellington, fresh out of school, was looking for a job and found himself in a Greenville agency that had a lot of promise. Robbie had been around town working in various design shops and saw an opportunity to work along side Wellington. This gave the duo the chance to hone their skills together, figure out each others strengths and weaknesses and push each other to do better work.

From the get-go posters were the top priority. They wanted to print gigposters. All the time. From a shed in Robbie’s backyard they got to work building their own exposure unit, buying a few screens, borrowing squeegees and even receiving a few hand-me-downs from a local tshirt shop. The struggle was not the equipment but the process of figuring out the printing process. Through multiple failed exsposures, lots of PBR and copious amounts of cussing Shed Labs finally started to get its footing.

In 2010 Shed had picked up speed and between Wellington working a day job and printing at his house at night and Robbie working a day job, teaching web design at Anderson University and helping Wellington print the two found themselves with no time to look for new work or see to the business side of things.
Shed had/has no intention of being a big shop with 40 or even 10 people for that matter. The goal was always to do work that suited Robbie and Wellington, but they needed to find somebody who had that same passion but goals of their own that Robbie and Wellington could also facilitate.

Entering stage right, Beau, former roommate of Robbie and long time friend to both members of Shed Labs had been working for his dad’s company for a few years and had plenty of client side experience. Sure it wasn’t exactly design, but Beau had the heart to do the job and turns out he’s really good at it. Beau also brought a creative energy to the group that opened up door to even more opportunities.

Shed Labs collectively have had the opportunity to work clients such as The Civil Wars, Sufjan Stevens, MeWithoutYou, MuteMath, Mike Birbiglia and many others. Over the past couple of years the guys have developed a rule book. Don’t get the wrong idea, Shed Labs doesn’t have a lot of rules but the most important one is “Work with your hands and use your noggin”.

WWF Climate Change Publication – Poster

At current levels, unless we contain global warming under 2°C, by 2050 one third of all animal species will be at risk of extinction and two billion people will be left without drinking water.

For this project we were required to make a fold out publication / poster as a handout to raise awareness of this issue. The specifications simply restricted the design to an A3 size paper.

My conceptual direction for this brief was to use bold typography and statistics to capture the audience. The large contrasting text make the brochure easy to flick through, reading the key facts quickly. The statistic shown through the small icons in the animals make a strong connection with the word extinction which then creates the shock factor as the audience understands it.

Pams Budget Range – Packaging

The Pams range of products is New Zealand’s largest food retailers with low prices aimed at the general public.

Our brief was to redesign Pams as a budget range to appeal to their existing target audience. We were given specific information to be included and the restriction of one font and one color mixed with black and white for each item.

My approach was to create sticker labels that could be slapped on boxes and cans to minimize costs. I chose 3 very bold standards colours to stand out from other brands. Along with the color the vertical numbers stand out against contrasting horizontal text of other brands. The barcodes and basic, minimal information give a very budget feeling to this range.

Hello Design Conference Standards Manual – Branding

Hello is a New Zealand based Design Conference, showcasing the best of contemporary New Zealand designers. It is a 3-day inspirational and interactive conference involving speakers, a design gallery and workshops. Hello welcomes designers from across the globe to experience and discover New Zealand’s innovative design industry and friendly, welcoming environment.

This was a project which involved creating a brand that targeted an overseas market, selling an aspect of New Zealand. The requirements was so create a brand guidelines.

DEKA selects and recreates each unique piece with a style that is innovative and edgy. DEKA entices fashionable individuals aged 18-25 who aren’t defined by obvious trends, but who venture out for unique pieces with personality. DEKA strongly values originality and provides their audience with one-off exclusive designs with the quality that stands strong in the market.

This project involved recreating the old ‘DEKA’ brand name into something new. The brief was to create a logo for the new brand and a poster to advertise.

The Film Commission Chile was created to promote Chile as a movie production destination, to help choosing locations, to provide all kind of services and a link between government and private companies. FCCh’s visual identity is inspired in a precise artifact: gaffer tape (colored duct tape). The tape is omnipresent in the world of movie production. Tapes unite, join, mark, hold, point, remind and help to work. Joerg Niggli is a video- and photographer from Zurich, Switzerland. His latest time lapse movie witch we are showcasing today was recently featured on Vimeo.com and got a lot of attention. The movie was filmed or rather photographed during two trips to Venice. Most of the images were done with a small digital Canon G10, a camera Joerg Niggli has always in his bag among with a small tripod and a timer.

Joerg Niggli works as a producer for Swiss Television SRF in Zurich. He has done a lot of national and international news coverage for broadcast from 1993 to 2005. In his early years he was a passionate photographer doing fine art B&W photography on medium and large format film and was covering events for newspapers with his 35mm SLR camera.  Photography in these times meant to be many hours in a darkroom and try over and over again when the result was not satisfying.

He was soon interested in videography and started filming with a SuperVHS camera. Editing was linear, complicated and with every copy the films looked worse. It was with the first DV (Digital Video) cameras that filming became more interesting. From now on nonlinear editing on computers was possible and affordable. Joerg Niggli started early to adopt this technology and was doing some short films, mostly portraits of people and special sites.

Later he realized various reports for Swiss Television as a filming producer (VJ), both in Switzerland and foreign countries. He is equally passionate about journalism, filming and editing.

In 2009 he became interested in time lapse photography and realized his first short movies about Zurich. The “ZurichLAPSE” series was featured in Zurich’s newspaper “Tagesanzeiger”. “Doing time lapse movies is a compensation for me”, Joerg Niggli says. As a producer of a broadcast health magazine he deals a lot with editorial and technical issues and is much involved in planning and organization. “With time lapse it’s different. It’s about the right spot, the light and – above all – the movement of things be it people, clouds or other things.”

Time lapse movies became very popular in recent years also because there is a worldwide community sharing their films on internet platforms like Vimeo and Youtube. All these technics are seen more and more also in broadcast programs and commercials. With motorized sliders and programmable special rigs some time lapse experts are raising the bar. In the same time the more the public has seen these movies the less interesting and exotic they will become. So Joerg Niggli is now experimenting how to include new elements in his movies. Modern and Professional Brochure Designs Evan Varsamis

Optimize WordPress in five minutes is a tutorial that I have created for people that have no idea on how to code or to  develop a WordPress website and it will help them optimize their website with a few tricks like, cleaning old trackbacks, removing old posts and fixing Errors from Google web master tools. About a month ago we have finished the re-design of our website which took us between 15-20 days. The next step was to optimize our database and remove old low quality posts and trackbacks. I have to say that it is not an easy task to maintain a clean WordPress website especially if multiple authors are producing content.

Starting with the trackbacks

I have recently discovered that before we implement the Disquss Comment system we had hundreads of useless trackbacks on our articles, we are talking about 160.000 useless trackbacks that made our SQL database slow. So we have decided to remove all of them and for 2 people it took us 48 hours with the following trick.

• Login to WordPress
• Go from the Sidebar to All Comments
• Go to the screen options (top right) and Uncheck the 2 options and set the view limit to 100 (shared hosting)
• Then type on the search the following  […] 
• Now select all trackbacks and move them to trash.
• Repeat the last two steps until you delete them all.
• When you finish remember to empty trash

Optimize WordPress Database

This is one of the most important things when you are running WordPress is keeping your database clean and optimized which means healthy and secure website. Many people are afraid of touching their database which is logical if they have no idea what they are doing, but here is a plugin called Wp-Optimize that more than 200.000 webmasters are using and have rated with 5/5 stars. I myself using this plugin to optimize weekly this website’s database so don’t be afraid about anything. Just in case though and remember to do this every time you optimize WordPress, Backup your database.

• Install Wp-Optimize
• Go its settings
• and tick the following (Remove all Post revisions, Remove all auto draft posts, Optimize database tables)
• Click Process

After the optimization finishes check the results, it should show something like this 1240.45kb Saved. If you run the the optimization for the first time this number should be a lot bigger especially if you have more than 500 articles published.

The Final Steps

The last step is to check your Google web master tool Errors. So login and go straight to Diagnostics/HTML Suggestions. Maybe some people dont have HTML errors (lucky ones) but if you do here are your options.

Option 1) Edit articles one by one and correct the html errors given by GWMT.

Option 2) If they are low quality old articles just delete them.

Option 3) Install Robots Meta plugin and edit each article by adding the “Noindex,Nofollow” Attribute.

After you finish with either option you have chosen you must wait about 1-2 weeks minimum in order for the articles to get re-indexed by google and therefore your html suggestions to vanish. One last tiny step that you should consider doing after the optimization is logging into Web master tools for one more time after about 1-2 weeks and go through Diagnostics/Crawl Errors and remove the 404 errors in case you have deleted your old articles.

Far East in Black and White is a creative photography collection by Martin Stavars. He was born in 1981 in Czestochowa, Poland. He studied economics, computer science and photography, ultimately focusing on the latter. Martin specializes in black and white cityscapes, landscapes and night photography. He and his camera have visited more than 20 countries, with Asia and generally far east holding the key spot with the most visits and inspirations.

His work has been recognized in numerous international competitions – he has been named the ‘Architecture Photographer of the Year’ at the International Photography Awards in New York, and received the ‘Grand Prix’ at the Image International in Canada and Hei Ming Prize in Tokyo. He has also won the first prizes in the 2008, 2009, and 2011 at the International Photography Awards in New York. Martin currently is the managing editor of ND Magazine (www.nd-magazine.com).

Artist Statement:

I’ve always been fascinated by landscapes – places that are absolutely desolate, where I can stay one on one with nature. For me, the growing joy right before pressing the shutter button as well as the possibility of interacting with the world filled with inspiration is as important as the creative act itself. This initial fascination has rapidly grown into obsession that eventually took control over my life.

Since the beginning of my adventure with photography, every landscape has been an unforgettable experience, thanks to which I’ve learned how to interpret light – the single most important (and the single most waited for) factor that shapes my images. On the other hand, lighting is directly connected with another key element of photography – luck. Proper weather, interesting cloud patterns or even a couple of sunrays breaking through the clouds, have many times decided that after a couple of failed attempts I was able to reach a satisfactory effect the moment nature displayed her most unpredictable face.

Lately, my interests widened to cityscapes, where I pursue qualities characteristic to nature – harmony and peace. As it is getting harder to find traits like that in our more and more hectic world, while taking pictures in the biggest cities in the world I had to develop the most important virtue of a photographer – patience. That is one of the reasons why there are usually no people (or only their silhouettes) on most of my photographs. But such character of my work is also a result of other factor. Whereas taking pictures with the main focus on a person involves emotions that are relatively easy to define, depicting an empty street or portraying pulsing nature usually requires qualitatively different feelings that have to fill in for the missing elements, thus making such photograph something more than a simple document.
