Decorated big mountain skier and BASE jumper Shane McConkey was killed on 26th March in a ski-BASE accident in the Italian Dolomites.

Added Robb Gaffney, “Shane’s been a part of our lives for quite a while now. I’m just sitting at Scott’s house processing the whole thing. The texts and calls are coming in, and you can really even feel it in the air in Squaw right now. I’m thinking about Sherry and his little girl. But in this area people have always loved Shane, so Sherry and Ayla, they’re going to have an immense amount of support around them. That’s one thing for sure; that’s Shane’s legacy.”

So without given too much away so not to ruin the forthcoming Podcast, the JWTeam, Mike
Douglas (a living ski legend and true testament to a dedicated seasonnaire click here), our Three Whistler Seasonnaires, Kyle aka ‘maggot’, Fraser and Jeremy, not forgetting the two mountain guides arrived at the Whistler Heli-port at 0800 hrs.

If you are wandering why Carl is called ‘Maggot’… His older brother is called ‘fly’ so unfortunately it was inevitable. After our mountain briefing, avalanche awareness, transceiver tuition (the beacon that saves us if we did cause an avalanche!) we regrouped to prepare for take-off. Hearts were racing, adrenaline pumping, only Mike had done this before and the other 9 of us couldn’t wait to lose our heli-virginity! Tim, Charlie, Nick and Jools had a chat with Mike about his best drop-off’s whilst we waited for extraction….good times! At 0900 hrs, Tim ‘top gun’ the Pilot dropped in after deploying zee Germans… So that was it, the time had come and we all ran in for the pick-up, the seasonnaires all ready in their jump suits.

Ultimately without giving too much away we had 2 heli-drops, lunch and another drop off in the freshest, untracked dry white powder any of us had ever seen. The second drop off was far from what we could imagine, a mountain peak no bigger than a car park space awaited us and one hell of a view! The pilot truly was hot shit! Drew (one of the camera - men) was slightly unnerved when the Ski Guide shoved him under the belly of the chopper to shoot it taking off! Heads down, a shit load of noise and the chopper took off leaving us on top of a mountain with a panoramic view of Whistler!

Carl, Fraser and Jeremy built a kicker at one snow lip for some great shots, nailing some great tricks. Anyway it was all over too quickly and before we knew it we were back at Fraser’s place of work, the Long Horn Saloon for some Apres-Ski. In Whistler, it seems Nacho’s, LOTS of cheese and Jugs of Beer is how it’s done. Not good for our already ever increasing fatty diet! We are all going to be HUGE when we get back!

We went out “partying” in downtown, but although I genuinely believed it was much much later, ended up crashing out by around 9pm.

The following day we split the journey up to Whistler, half in the float plane, and the other half in the trucks.

Charlie and Mattia emerged from the plane looking very tender and green!

We spent the evening comparing Whistler’s variety of local beers (winter beer is the best!) and devouring pig carcasses!

At the beginning of December we headed down to Morzine to set up camp, only to find the entire village covered in an unexpectedly deep blanket of snow.
The lifts have opened nice and early meaning we had an early doors powder day.

The following day I had to leave a perfect bluebird Porte du Soleil to fly back to london to catch a connecting flight to Vancouver, only to hear at the check-in desk that in our next stop of Whistler it is raining!

Flights went not without hiccup (Jools wasn’t allowed onboard because they thought her passport seemed dodgy, ‘wankers!’).
But after many an inflight movie and with our bowels full of long-haul flight wind (you know what I’m talking about!), we have arrived in Vancouver for the night ready to hop on a waterplane in the morning, GOOD TIMES!

Snowfix have teamed up with Jack Wills to create a global tour of EPIC proportions!

We have decided here at Snowfix HQ that we have spent enough time loitering the slopes of Europe and it is now high time we started slashing punters and licking 1-pieces on the other side of the pond.

So in December this year we are flying over to Vancouver and road-tripping from Whistler down to Aspen.

Now, seeing as our viewers have been so good at providing us with photos and feedback over the years we have decided we are going to make it up to you by throwing a MONSTER PARTY at each resort we visit! And every single one of are you are invited!

Also, because we have linked up with Jack Wills we are going to have a truck-load of exclusive Snowfix Tour t-shirts to give out along the way, to those people who come along and party the hardest!

If you decide you’re going to do something new, you might as well make the experience a memorable one. So that’s why to celebrate the eagerly awaited launch of DC Snowboards in the UK, DC just had to do it right, and what better way than an official ‘Throw Down’ during one of the biggest weeks in the UK snow calendar. Together with Snowboard Club UK, who is celebrating its 4th Birthday, DC and SCUK will be throwing what’s known in the trade as, a ‘MASH UP’ of biblical proportions at The Fire Station, Hammersmith on Friday 24th October.

DC will also be laying down the red carpet to welcome several mystery pro freestylers to the UK, with early rumours suggesting Devun Walsh and Iikka Backstrom could be gracing us all. They’ll be signing posters, t-shirts and no doubt a host of inappropriate items at the Snow & Rock stand (No. 435) during the Metro Show (Information about dates and times to follow, so keep your eyes peeled) and then they’ll be moving onto the more serious business of getting loaded with the mob at The Fire Station and showing us their moves off the hill and on the dancefloor.

The evening will kick off with a chance to watch the UK premiere of Mack Dawg’s highly anticipated anniversary movie, “Double Decade”. Since ‘secret’ was the name of the game for this project, you’ll have to come along and find out for yourself, but what we can disclose is that legendary snowboard moments await you with a concentration of up to date freestyle manoeuvres from some of the best riders out there including, DC’s very own Devun, Lauri, Aaron and Iikka. Destined to become one of the best snowboard films ever produced, the premiere of Double Decade is not to be missed.

As the movie credits roll, the evening transcends seamlessly into a hotbed of cranking beats. Saturday 26th July, 2008 – Today Corey Bohan (AUS) conquered one of the most insane BMX courses ever constructed, to be crowned winner of Red Bull Empire of Dirt 2008. It wasn’t easy: forty of the world’s best BMX riders descended on Devon and for the last two days have competed for one of the most desirable prizes in BMX: winner of the world’s first BMX dirt slopestyle competition.

After last year’s was cancelled due to poor weather conditions, this year’s competition and course exceeded all expectations. 5,000 people negotiated the tight lanes, flocking to a small field to witness the gravity defying tricks on the 400m long dirt and wood course. From the very first practice session on Tuesday afternoon all the way through to today’s final the standard has been sky high… just like many of the tricks!

Yesterday 33 riders started the qualifiers and by the end of the day the number had been whittled down to an excited 16. The finals read like a who’s who of the BMX world. In the Super Final it came down to just four men, and after one spectacular run each it was Aussie powerhouse Corey Bohan (92.67) narrowly beating US legend Gary Young (91.00). Another Australian Dane Searle grabbed third with 90.67 with event creator and Devon-local hero Kye Forte taking the last spot on the podium with a score of 86 after crashing on this run.

Kye Forte said: “At this event I’m a rider and an event organiser so it was hard to juggle both, especially after qualifying first yesterday. On the start ramp, for the Super Final, there was a lot of pressure on me and I knew Corey, Gary and Dane were going to go full out to take top spot. I tried to step it up, took a risk, and crashed in my run but it was an amazing event and I’m really happy everyone had such a good time. It was rad.”

The construction of the Red Bull Empire of Dirt course took three months alone and it is the only one of its kind on the planet. The course required 10,000 tonnes of dirt to sculpt the huge dirt superpipe, massive double jumps, hip, wall rides, and the many other features which have never before been combined.

Red Bull Empire of Dirt will be broadcast in a one hour Freesports on 4 program on Channel 4 on Sunday 3rd August at 8am (Channel 4+1 at 9am).

Just an incredible course, the biggest kicker I reckon I’ve ever seen (45m apparently), and some really interesting features. The first day was awesome, changeable weather but some good sunny spells. And then there was a nighttime Jib session, where we saw Candide throwing a corked 810 onto a rail! There was a couple of pretty nasty crashes, but other than that great atmosphere. Candide just wanders around like a god, which I’m starting to think he pretty much is!

Today was a bit of a shame because the weather was shit, really bad visability. So they had to cancel the super kicker again, which meant that noone actually got to hit it, and everything was pretty much done by 3pm. But a great event all in all, make sure you check out Wednesday’s show for the footage, in the meantime here’s a few pics:

After spending the week in Laax for the BRITS, it was a quick unpack-repack in Morzine and then straight down to Tignes for the Jib-Vid comp.

Johno was in the Red Bull team with James Carr and John Ludvigsen and I (Tim) entered a Snowfix team with Robbie Emmanuel and Josh Wolf.

The filming day was a bit tricky because it was a fairly stormy up in the park and subsequently the kickers were closed. However the organisers decided to open the whole mountain so that gave us a load more options.
Filming was followed by a solid night of editing (not much different to the usual Tuesday in Snowfix HQ!), tapes were in at midday the following day and so we managed to get some riding in the sunshine.

That night all the films are judged by the other teams, I have to say I was amazed (and slightly intimidated) by the high level of the videos.

My entry was inspired by the recent Tenacious D film (music written and performed by Josh), and to be honest should probably carry an 18 rating, but here it is:

Johno and his team made an awesome vid (see this weeks show) and won 750 euros and a Sony VAIO laptop for each team member! I had actually helped Johno with his script so he then made it his mission to get me well and truely wasted, which he managed with great success!

The following four days were a bit of a blur, but I do know I continued to party in both Val d’Isere and Chamonix and met our competition winner Tom (who was a bloody good egg!).

Finally now I’m back in Morzine and should really be catching up on some sleep, but its been snowing again and I reckon there is powder to be found so the mountain is calling, hope you enjoy this weeks show!

It has been snowing quite a lot this evening in Morzine! I had just dropped off a friend up towards Avoriaz (without snowchains) and on the way home decided to attempt some ‘tips’ on getting out of control!

Specifically it was the half-handbrake-turn-slide that sent me careering into a ditch!!!

Today we went all the way to Bardonecchia to ride the halfpipe (the same pipe as the 2006 olympics) and to get some helmet cam footage of Dan. We set off on the 3hr journey at 8am and, due to our van getting lost in the daytime, had to wait till 8pm to return home!

Nonetheless it was well worth it, we got some sick footage, rode a really nice pipe and got to see Dan ripping in the flesh, which was worth it alone!

Interestingly, we didn’t decide on either the couch surfing or the burp contest until we were actually sat down and filming. In a trial run of the ‘couch surf’, I actually caught my shins on the sofa as I jumped over! This not only caused great pain to my already fucked up, skier shins. It also broke the sofa!! Oops!

Two stories I would like to have included:

• The full description of Misty’s Christmas eve when he shat himself and broke two fingers!
• And the one about the time the wheel fell off their tour bus, whilst they were driving, and cut a cow in half!

Now you probably wouldn’t believe these stories were true, until you meet them, and then you wonder what they were missing out?!That was filmed in the Dragon Lodge, a wicked welsh snowboarding chalet in Tignes, so we popped over to Val again that evening to see the crew.

Had an interesting journey back, resulting in me accidentally reversing the car onto a small mound and getting stuck with just 1 wheel touching the floor! Oops!

However the snow caused a bit of moisture inside the lens which slightly fogged up one of the angles for the interview. Still worth it for the riding though!

Undeterred we put our blagging hats on and went on down. We decided that if we were to make some sort of feature of the night for the show they would surely let us in, hence the top 5 hangover cures

That evening turned out to be a bit of a who’s who of UK snowboarding and managed to sort out most of our guests for the season!

The interview was really easy because Tim Warwood is officially a very funny guy! The very kind folk at the Park (a snowboard shop in Morzine) let us film in there and the interview literally could have been 20 minutes long and still watchable. However we had to edit it down.

Mr. Warwood would like to add, for the record, that he is not a chauvinistic pig, even though he feels he might have come across that way!

He then went on to say ‘You can’t say anything these days with all these fucking whining feminists about!’ (The final statement was made up.)

And it actually started snowing, which was ace but made it soooo cold! We ended up having to find some quiet indoors to film the interview because we were worried that Jools was about to drop dead from hypothermia!

The upload for the episode was pretty interesting as well because we were still waiting for the internet to be connected, and because it was quite late the only place we could upload was in a bar in town.

However the rule is internet is free as long as you buy drinks! It took about 5 hours to get all the upload website etc. done so by the time we left we were druuuuuuuunk!

A fairly random evening followed, we went out for a Christmas dinner, and randomly that evening the girl waiting out table got fired! So she came out on the piss with us to drown them! Random evenings are always fun!

Used some changing rooms inspired dry-brushing to texture it! Actually I’ll shut up now, thats starting to sound a bit gay!

Ok so it was about 200yds of crust but it was so much fun! Nothing like getting your skis on to clear your head!

However because the phone company was French, the dude just didn’t come. Now this wouldn’t have been too much of a problem except….they told us that he might arrive at any time between 9-6.

I only did a little shop when I got here, just some bread, ham and 800g of brie. The bread and ham disappeared ages ago and so for the last two days I’ve been eating brie on plate!

Worked out quite well in the end because by the time I was able to leave and get into town I had such a serious case of cabin fever I had become a weird talking machine. I was quite excited about the prospect of ‘other people’ and so have met loads of cool peeps. Starting to really like Morzine!

Packed the car, went to drive off, flat battery! A shit battery is impossible in the mountains so got a new one fitted. Unfortunately this resulted in my car stereo being locked! A 15hr drive is bad without company or music is suicide!

I called Charlie and got him and Google on the case and continued to Dover. On arrival I was told that my ferry had been cancelled due to a storm, until the next day! Ever the optimist, I decided that it was a good thing because it probably meant snow in the mountains, so went to check out Dover centre.

Now frankly Dover is shit! For example, one of the highlights of my evening there was Netto! Went to stock up for the journey, so cheap! Found this Red Bull equivalent that comes in 2L bottles, got two.

I asked an old lady if there was an internet cafe around, and she literally replied ‘ooooh no, this is Dover!’.

So anyway kipped in the car and got the ferry the next day.

Half way through France I broke down again, nothing too serious but it added time to my journey meaning I didn’t arrive till about 10pm.

At this point it would have probably been sensible to get a few things out of the car and just go to bed. Unfortunately on route I had drunk 4L of ‘energy drink’ so was buzzing about unpacking etc. till about 3 in the morning!

Oh well, at least I’m here!
