'Mad' Mike Hughes is believed to possibly be dead after launching himself in the air with a self-made rocket that crash-landed -- and it was captured on camera.

The well-known daredevil and amateur rocket-engineer was doing a rocket launch Saturday in what appears to be near Barstow, CA -- where a reporter says Mike propelled himself into the air with a "self-made steam-powered rocket" and then crash-landed into the ground.

Robert "Evel" Knievel he wasn't.

Hughes was 64, plenty old enough to know better.

"He went way up in the sky," Chapman said. "I'm not sure how high. But his goal was 5,000 feet. Then it did an arc and then came straight down and nose-dived into the desert floor about half a mile away from the launch pad."

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said deputies were called at 1:52 p.m. Saturday to a private property off of Highway 247 in Barstow and pronounced a man deceased "after the rocket crashed in the open desert during a rocket launch event."

"We don't know what happened," said Waldo Stakes, a close friend of Hughes who's been involved in the launches and was at the scene. Stakes says the rocket landed nearly a mile away from the launch site.

There were about 50 to 60 people on hand for the event, including a crew from the Science Channel, which was documenting Hughes' launch as part of a series on homemade astronauts.

Another day, another caucus, another massive fuck-up:

More than 24 hours since the Nevada caucuses closed, a large portion of the results had yet to be released, adding an additional layer of confusion to an already fractured primary process.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders claimed a clear victory Saturday night, but the rest of the field remains murky. Former Vice President Joe Biden and former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg have both claimed a second-place finish in Nevada and the delayed results are only generating more skepticism of the caucus process.

By late afternoon Sunday, the Nevada Democratic Party had only reported around half of the results. A spokesperson for the party, Molly Forgey, said the delay in reporting Saturday's results was due to the additional requirements by the national party but that officials were "continuing to verify and to report results."

Time to ditch the entire caucus system. The problem, as I have written before, is the cost of holding primaries.

I was happy I lived in Nevada long enough for it go from a solid red state in the early 1980s to a purple state, and now it appears to be a blue state.

Update: Sanders did take the Nevada caucus. As I said, many of the votes were already cast before the latest news about him being used by Russia and Trump to ratfuck the Democrats. Obituary: A.P. Indy

Belmont Stakes and Breeders' Cup Classic winner of 1992, A.P. Indy, whose wins in both races garnered him Horse of the Year honors for that year, has died at the ripe old age of 31 (technically 30 as his birthday was in late March). A.P. Indy was not only an outstanding racehorse with an incredible pedigree, he would also be one of the greatest thoroughbred sires in American history.

A.P. Indy was by far the best offspring of 1977 Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew, who, without this great horse, would not have had as much influence on the breed as had been initially thought. Slew had a great career as a sire, as we all know, but his sons have fizzled out in terms of impact on racing. Except, of course, for A.P. Indy, whose influence has been tremendous over the past 20 or so years.

But it isn't just because he was a son of Seattle Slew. A.P. Indy's dam was the great Weekend Surprise, also the dam of 1990 Preakness winner Summer Squall, among other offspring she had. However, there is more, as we all know. Weekend Surprise was one of the great broodmares sired by the incomparable Secretariat, in my view the greatest racehorse to have ever lived. Secretariat, of course, was the son of Bold Ruler, the greatest thoroughbred sire of all time. A.P., through both his sire's and his dam's sides, was Bold Ruler through and through. He would be the horse who would carry the Bold Ruler influence into the 21st century. It had gone dormant since the early 1980s, while the Northern Dancer and Raise a Native lines would ascend, but the line continued, thank God, and returned with a vengeance.

A.P. Indy died peacefully at his home, Lane's End, in Versailles, Kentucky, yesterday. He was a big attraction at the farm for visitors. As a yearling he was bought by Japanese businessman Tomonori Tsurumaki, who named him. Breeders Will Farish and William Kilroy bought back part interest in the horse in 1992.

A bruised foot kept him out of the 1992 Kentucky Derby and Preakness, but he was fit for the Belmont, winning in the second-fastest time (tied with Easy Goer) of 2:26. It seemed appropriate for a grandson of Secretariat.

A.P. Indy's offspring include Mineshaft, Bernardini, Honor Code, and Rags to Riches.

As important as this he was the sire of leading sire Pulpit, who unlike Indy did not live very long, and Pulpit in turn is the sire of one of the "hottest" sires in the world, Tapit.

The strange irony here is both the sire of Pulpit, A.P. Indy, and the dam of Pulpit, Preach, both lived to be 31 and both died within days of each other.

In October 1985, a few months after Bernie Sanders traveled to Nicaragua to celebrate the sixth anniversary of that country's socialist revolution, the Soviet-backed government suspended the civil liberties of its citizens, including the rights to free speech, free assembly and labor strikes.

A few days later, Sanders, then the socialist mayor of Burlington, Vermont, received a pointed letter from a constituent. How, the letter-writer wanted to know, could Sanders continue to embrace a "another in a long line of dictatorships, whose only true concern is its length of stay in power"?

In a written reply, Sanders — who had praised Nicaragua's leaders upon his return from the trip — made no apologies. The Nicaraguan government was fighting a "brutal war" funded by the United States, he wrote, which made the situation "complex." Didn't the U.S. government, Sanders wrote, intern Japanese Americans during World War II? Didn't Lincoln curtail basic rights during the Civil War?

This is one skeleton of a cemetery full of skeletons in Bernie's past, and the number of those skeletons threatens to dwarf Arlington National Cemetery.

I read someplace the GOP had TWO FEET of opposition research on Sanders, no doubt much of it gleaned from the Hillary Clinton campaign. The Clinton campaign had the ammo, but they chose not to use it when they realized Sanders wasn't a real threat to her chances in the primaries.

Obituary: Two Kochs down, two more to go as Frederick Koch, 86, the oldest and least known of the infamous Koch brothers, died the other day. He mostly busied himself with philanthropy and the arts and had little to do with the other brothers. He has a pass on that score.

He was basically elbowed out of the family business and became somewhat estranged.

In 1986, Koch stood beside Queen Elizabeth II at the opening of the new $2.8 million Swan Theater he had built for the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon in England. The queen thanked the “generous benefactor” but didn’t name him, respecting his wish for privacy.

Olsen said Koch’s entire estate will be used to establish a foundation to promote the study of literature, history and the arts.

At least he did some good in the world. I can't say the same for the brothers, especially the truly evil one, Charles.

Frederick Koch died last Wednesday of heart failure.

Good riddance to the nuclear family, which was the "norm" during its heyday from 1945 to around 1975.

This is the Republican David Brooks of the NYT column. He sees the handwriting on the wall, but unlike him I fully believe marriage itself is on the way out. It isn't just birthrates plummeting, but marriage rates are also falling, and the economy has little to do with it. The trend has been in the works for decades.

Also, if you are single you are more likely to live in poverty in the United States. This is especially true for women. Only a fool would think it is "cheaper" to be single than to live with somebody else or be married, not with the housing costs so insane these days. Other countries with a much better safety net might have different results from more people living alone, but this isn't true here.

Obituary: Writer A.E. Hotchner, only 102, has died. He was a friend to people like Ernest Hemingway.

Hotchner, known to friends as “Ed” or “Hotch”, was an impish St Louis native who read, wrote and hustled himself out of poverty and published more than a dozen books, befriend countless celebrities and see his play The White House performed at the real White House for President Bill Clinton.

He was a natural fit for Elaine’s, the former Manhattan nightspot for the famous and the near-famous, and contributed the text for Everyone Comes to Elaine’s, an illustrated history. Hotchner’s other works included the novel The Man Who Lived at the Ritz, bestselling biographies of Doris Day and Sophia Loren, and a musical, Let ’Em Rot! co-written with Cy Coleman.

In his 90s, he completed an upbeat book of essays on ageing, OJ in the Morning, G&T at Night. When he was 100, he wrote the detective novel The Amazing Adventures of Aaron Broom. At 101, he adapted Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea for the stage.

An evangelical leader with a consulting business in Dallas, Wallnau has become famous as one of the few evangelicals who accurately prophesied Trump’s election after receiving divine inspiration to read chapter 45 of the Book of Isaiah. That’s the story of King Cyrus, whom Wallnau and many other evangelicals think Trump resembles. (For $45, Wallnau and ex-con televangelist Jim Bakker now sell a Trump/Cyrus coin that people can use to pray for Trump’s reelection.) Dr. Lance, as he’s known, has made several visits to the White House, including for a private briefing on Jared Kushner’s Middle East peace plan.

These people shouldn't even be called "evangelicals." They are more accurately called the "religious right" or dominionists.

Moreover, it never dawns on them Armageddon may never happen, just climate change destroying the planet thanks in large part to human overpopulation and human greed (outsourcing of jobs to countries like India and China with lax environmental regulations).

Speaking of the shitty treatment of women and girls, just what were the longterm medical consequences of the footbinding of women in China?

Fascinating as anything:

Soon after, another woman came in with a crutch and an odd kind of shoe. When Cummings asked about the woman’s feet, his colleagues—many of them female doctors in their late 50s—told him that they had been bound. “I assumed it was fairly rare,” he said.

Then more women with bound feet started coming in. What Cummings realized—the reason he hadn’t seen these women elsewhere in China—was that for the most part they physically couldn’t go out. The women he met spent much of their life in or very close to their home, their disability preventing them from venturing farther out. He was seeing them in the lab only because transportation to the hospital was provided.

The women he’d met with bound feet, Cummings eventually wrote in a report on the cohort, were much more likely to have fallen in the previous year than women without, had lower bone density in their hips and lower spines, and had greater trouble getting up from a chair without assistance. Although the consequences for millions of Chinese women living with what he calls a “forced disability” were profound, Cummings’s study was initially turned down by journals like The Lancet and The New England Journal of Medicine. Both told him that because foot-binding was essentially extinct, it wasn’t a current medical problem. He finally sent his report to the American Journal of Public Health in 1996 with a note to explain that although foot-binding is no longer practiced, “the study has enormous implications for how we treat women.”

I Hope the Young Women in Connecticut Prevail in Court Against These Male CHEATERS

Here is the Selina Soule (and others) lawsuit against Connecticut athletic authorities allowing male cheaters into women's sports, thus denying women fair competition.

The courts should uphold their suit.

This jumped out at me:

58. Not surprisingly, while Craig Telfer ranked 212th and 433rd in the 400 meter hurdles among men’s Division II athletes in 2016 and 2017 respectively, CeCe Telfer took the Division II national championship in women’s 400 meter hurdles in 2019.

59. Minna Sveard, the fastest female runner, finished almost a full two seconds behind Telfer, and was recognized only as coming in second.

And to reiterate just a few of the biological differences between the SEXES--NOT "genders":

45. Physiological athletic advantages enjoyed over girls and women by similarly fit males after puberty include:
a. Larger lungs and denser alveoli in the lungs, enabling faster oxygen uptake;
b. Larger hearts and per-stroke pumping volume, and more hemoglobin per unit of blood, all enabling higher short-term and
sustained levels of oxygen transport to the muscles;
c. An increased number of muscle fibers and increased muscle mass (for example, men have 75%-100% greater cross-sectional
area of upper arm muscle than do comparably fit women, while women have 60-70% less trunk and lower body strength than
comparably fit men);
d. Higher myoglobin concentration within muscle fibers, enabling faster transfer and “cellular respiration” of oxygen within the
muscle to unleash power;
e. Larger bones, enabling the attachment of greater volumes of muscle fiber;
f. Longer bones, enabling greater mechanical leverage thus enabling males to unleash more power, e.g., in vertical jumps;
g. Increased mineral density in bones resulting in stronger bones, providing superior protection against both stress fractures and fractures from collisions;
h. And, of course, U.S. adult males are on average 5 inches taller than U.S. adult women.
46. Meanwhile, female puberty brings distinctive changes to girls and women that identifiably impede athletic performance, including increased body fat levels which—while healthy and essential to female fertilityy—creates increased weight without providing strength, as well as wider hips and different hip joint orientation that result in decreased hip rotation and running efficiency.
47. These are inescapable biological facts of the human species, not stereotypes, “social constructs,” or relics of past discrimination.
48. As a result of these many inherent physiological differences between men and women after puberty, male athletes consistently achieve records 10-20% higher than comparably fit and trained women across almost all athletic events, with even wider consistent disparities in long-term endurance events and contests of sheer strength such as weight-lifting.

Cheating is literally being codified by these "athletic associations." Now any male who can't cut it with elite males can claim he is a "girl" or a "woman" and beat the shit out of legitimate female athletes.

This is cheating more outrageous than anything Lance Armstrong ever committed. This has to be made illegal to do it, punishment jail time and/or fines for the frauds who are caught, but also these events must have mandatory chromosome testing as the IOC used to have so these frauds are weeded out long before competition.

NOBODY changes sex. EVERYBODY knows this fact including and especially the CHEATERS stealing from women and girls.

Maricopa County (AZ) prosecutor Juan Martinez, noted for his brazen misconduct during the Jodi Arias trial, has now been put on administrative leave:

Martinez has faced years of sexual harassment and misconduct allegations.

“On Friday, Feb. 7, 2020, Juan Martinez was placed on paid administrative leave. We currently have no further comment on this personnel matter at this time,” according to a statement released by the office.

Martinez became a household name when he prosecuted Jodi Arias, who was convicted of killing Travis Alexander in his Mesa home in 2008. Besides Arias, Martinez has prosecuted numerous other high-profile cases. He’s worked for the county for decades.

The announcement comes a few days after the State Bar of Arizona accused Presiding Disciplinary Judge William J. O’Neil of abuse of power because O’Neil decided Martinez would not face ethics charges for sexual harassment allegations by several women at the County Attorney’s Office.

A vote for Sanders is basically a vote for another Trump term.

Sanders is the only clear non-starter. It’s impossible not to regard the Vermont senator in a Trumplike mold—he seldom has shown an ability to build consensus and threatens to use executive orders extensively, just like Trump. It’s also doubtful he could assemble a highly qualified Cabinet, meaning he’d essentially be the left wing version of Trump: isolated, angry, unable to work with others and showing too little respect for dissenting opinions. A Sanders candidacy simply guarantees a Trump second term.

Obituary: Joseph Shabalala, founder of the world group Ladysmith Black Mambazo, has died. He was 78 years old.

The group was in Reno perhaps 10 or 15 years ago as a part of Artown, which is a big event there. I saw them perform.

Founded in 1960, Ladysmith Black Mambazo recorded Africa’s first gold album, 1973’s “Amabutho.” They gained international fame when Paul Simon collaborated with them for his 1986 Grammy-winning album “Graceland.” Ladysmith Black Mambazo sang on several tracks, and Shabalala co-composed the song “Homeless” with Simon. Simon produced Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s 1987 album Shaka Zulu,” which won a Grammy, their first of five, for Best Traditional Folk Recording. The group went on to appear in Michael Jackson’s 1988 movie “Moonwalker” and to sing at South African President Nelson Mandela’s 1994 inauguration. Shabalala remained with Ladysmith Black Mambazo until his 2014 retirement; the group continues touring today.
