Cristiano Ronaldo scored two goals for Real Madrid against Valencia (2-0) on Saturday. The Merengue team is now two points behind Lionel Messi’s FC Barcelona.

Lats week’s humiliating defeat in the Clasico (0-5) seems forgotten. Ronaldo is the lead scorer in the Spanish Liga with 16 units.

Higuain injured, Jose Mourinho still chose to start the game without French striker Benzema. Mourinho’s team, started slowly before reaching cruising speed at the end of the first half of the game.

In fact Cristiano Ronaldo scored his first goal of the night, seconds before the break at the conclusion of a cross by Mesut Özil.

The dismiss of Albelda (2nd yellow card for a questionable hand on a pass from L. Diarra, 65th) has accelerated things for Madrid, that exploited this advantage via Ronaldo on a service of Özil again (73rd).

On Madrid side, the message is clear: the disappointing 2010 Clasico belongs to the past.

Barcelona is now at the top of La Liga, top of Europe, and perhaps at the top of the soccer world.

An estimated 620 million audience worldwide witnessed this Monday the coronation of this fantastic soccer team. In its kingdom, the Camp Nou in front of its public, Pep Guardiola’s brilliant team completely destroyed Real Madrid (5-0).

Barca took everything from Madrid for the fifth consecutive time, this is starting to become a lot. Jose Mourinho with his old team, Inter eliminated the Blaugrana in the semifinals of the Champions League, last season, but this time the “Special One” took a lesson in Catalan.

Administered in all serenity, despite the rain, technically and tactically dominated, Real Madrid has watched its opponent take the crown in El Classico. Barca attacked non stop like Guardiola planned and Madrid could not do anything to stop it. Xavi, Messi and Pedro did what they wanted with the ball. The 90 minutes have seemed like an eternity for Madrid: at the 10th, Xavi opened the scoring on an assist from Iniesta, at the 20th, Pedro doubled the lead after 20 consecutive passes from his team.

After the break, Mesut Özil, came in for the merengue, this changed very little. Barca again scored: David Villa, on two passes from Messi, 55th and 58th, before Jeffren, who just came in, concluded the humiliation (90 +1).

Real that almost conceded as many goals in one night than since the beginning of the season, 5 against 6 made a lot of mistakes: 7 yellow cards collected, including one by Cristiano Ronaldo who, through his provocations, was hoping to provoke a reaction from his teammates. It did not happen.

Real lost the title by three points last season. All heads down, overwhelmed by this difficult night, the players of Madrid probably thought of that.

But what could they have done more against the fantastic machine, that is Barcelona?

Football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has been awarded substantial damages after a United Kingdom newspaper ran a story that claimed that the football star had put his injured ankle at risk by excessive partying. The incident happened back in two thousand and eight when the player underwent surgery on his injured ankle which meant that he was unable to play for Manchester United for nearly two months while he recovered from his injury.

The Daily Telegraph, a United Kingdom newspaper published a story that claimed that Ronaldo had injured his ankle whilst he was dancing at a club in Hollywood. However the star who was playing for Manchester United at the time started legal proceedings claiming that the story had caused him embarrassment, distress, offense, and went on to claim that it could damage his reputation as a professional. The star did not turn up to the hearing yesterday, but the judge ruled in his favor.

He received substantial damages for the article that was printed. This is not the first time that football stars have sued newspapers, so it is probably about time stories like this stop being published!

Messi Injury – Barcelona Soccer Star Lionel Messi Ankle Hurt – Lionel Messi suffered a fairly serious ankle injury as his team went on to beat Atletico. The injury came on a tackle by Atletico defender Tomas Ijfalusi. He was taken off the field on a stretcher and it is believed that he could be out of play for the next two weeks. In an official release, the team confirmed that he had sprained ligaments in his right ankle, and had suffered no damage to the bone.

After being given the title of World Player of the Year last year, Messi has been on a tear in recent games. He will have a number of tests on Monday, when the team will get a better idea of just how hurt he truly is. Teammat3es said that they were happy to have won the game, but were sad to have done so without the help of their best player.

Luckily, a fracture was ruled out and it appears that his return will be quicker than some guessed. If he had fractured his ankle, he would have to spend over a month in a cast while it healed, and then would have an additional few weeks of rehab before he would be able to play again. The injury looked bad, but in reality it could have been much worse both for Messi and for his team. He will be missing league matches against Sporting Gijon, Real Mallorca and Athletic Bilbao.

Paul The Octopus Retiring – Paul the octopus ,2 years old is retiring from soccer predictions after dominating national news during the World Cup. The octopus was able to accurately predict every World Cup game that the German team played in. The octopus made predictions by choosing between two boxes of food with the nation’s flags inside of them. The bowl of food that he headed toward first was the team that was marked down as his choice in the match. The octopus even received a number of death threats after accurately predicting the team’s loss at the end of their world cup run. A number of fans joked about eating the octopus in post-game interviews.
“He won’t give any more oracle predictions – either in football, politics, lifestyle, or economy,” said a spokesman for the aquarium.

“Paul will get back to his former job, namely making children laugh.”
The octopus was presented with a golden cup honoring his ability to correctly guess the outcome of the games. Throughout the World Cup, the popularity of Paul the octopus has continued to grow at a dramatic rate. His accurate predictions have made national news around the world.
While it is unlikely that he will make a return for the 2012 World Cup, it would be interesting to see if he could keep his streak up and continue to guess the results accurately. After the death threats were made, a number of animal-rights organizations stepped up to demand that the aquarium do everything in their power to protect the octopus.

Paul The Octopus:Psychic Octopus Death Threats – Paul, also known the “Oracle Octopus” of a German aquarium, became a sensation worldwide after the octopus was able to correctly predict the results of Germany’s World Cup games. Now, the Octopus might actually become someone’s dinner.

“Nothing beats grilled octopus,” said fan Dolores Lusch. “Cut him up in thin slices and grill him on all sides with a dash of lemon juice, olive oil and garlic.”

The threats have come after Paul accurately predicted that Spain would beat Germany. Some fans have said that they believe that the octopus had jinxed the team, and that it should be eaten.

The octopus predicted the games by having two containers lowered into his tank. Each box had a flag for each nation that would be participating in the upcoming game and each box had food on top of it. The food that the octopus moved toward first was deemed as the selection, and while it is a fairly simplistic way to go about it, the octopus was able to accurately predict every game that Germany played in.

By the time that Germany was set to play Spain, the octopus had already made worldwide news. When Paul picked Spain over Germany, a number of players on the team joked that they felt betrayed by their underwater friend.
During the 2008 European Championships, the octopus was also used to predict a number of games and even had some of its choices televised live. PETA would later demand that the octopus be set free, while many fans thought that Paul was a lucky octopus.

World Cup 2010 Winner? – Some are suggesting that Spain is going to take their streak all the way to the end. Their win over Portugal highlighted their skills and has given them the confidence to overcome the challenges ahead of them. Xavi has full belief that they will accomplish their goal and many are backing up his predictions. The man of the match after their very impressive game against Portugal in Cape Town left was given to none other than the Barcelona midfielder. They won by just 1 score in the World Cup second-round. Spain was undoubtedly the dominate team for the entire match but there were numerous occasions where the situation became very frustrating as Portugal had ample opportunity to score a point. However, Spain was able to hold in there until the end of the game.

Xavi released many comments about the game stating, “We played a great game, it was a great collective effort. We maintained possession and we wanted to play our style of football. Portugal basically gave us the ball. They tried to regain possession for counter-attacks but we dealt with it. We really enjoyed our football. It was the best match we’ve played in this World Cup so far. We controlled the ball in both halves but maybe attacked more in the second. We scored the goal and then we could enjoy it more. Basically, tonight, Spain was better than Portugal.”

David Villa’s goal was able to capture the entire round and accomplish a win during the match. The performance of the team was the overall deciding factor in the win. They controlled the ball, stayed alive and kept their defense locked down. When David scored the goal the entire team was ecstatic. It was enough to carry them to victory.

So which team do you think will win The 2010 World Cup?
The Netherlands, Brazil, Spain, Argentina, Paraguay or Ghana?

England vs Algeria World Cup – England was not able to break the deadlocked score of 0-0 against Algeria in their match on Friday. Both sides had a number of different chances to score and put a cap on the game but were unable to capitalize on the opportunities that were presented to them. England has not played well as of late, and they continued their woes and struggles against Algeria, who many thought would fall to a resurgence from the English team today.

The largest news at the beginning of the game was the release of the West Ham goalkeeper Robert Green after his huge screw up in the game against the US. David James was chosen to replace him, and he saw plenty of action during the game today.

Steven Gerrard was the first to pressure the English team, almost scoring on a high shot that bounced off the hands of the goalkeeper. England could never really get anything going int he game today, and appeared to be sluggish throughout. Some of the players even appeared to be nervous throughout the match, probably because they had played so poorly in their previous game.

Algeria dominated the possession of the ball. James was tested throughout the game with a number of different shots from the Algerians, who seemed to have pinpointed the weakness and goalkeeper and continued to focus on it. England started to wake up late in the game and looked better than they had throughout the day, but even that was not enough to save them from being booed as they left the field at the end of the game.

Mexico vs France World Cup 2010 – The French team is close to being eliminated after losing 2-0 to Mexico in the 2010 World Cup match. Both teams are very good, but France has received criticism early in the tournament for rewarding their players even when they decided to put them up in fancy five star hotels and resorts. The team was hoping to turn themselves around and secure a victory in the face of the criticism, but were unable to do so against the Mexican team.

Both teams showed that they were solid throughout the first half of the game, but Mexico showed why they were the superior squad in the second half o the match. They secured the victory, after France was unable to capitalize on a plethora of opportunities and mis-cues that were presented to them throughout the game. This game, unlike many so far in the World Cup, was exciting despite that fact that France was unable to score. The play was inspired, and France looked bright early in the match.

By the end of the game it became clear that the Mexican defense was simply too much for France to handle, as they were never able to place the ball between the posts. Mexico, on the other hand, did not have as many chances to score as France, but was able to capitalize on two of their chances they were given, which was enough for the victory. It was clear the team that took advantage of the opportunities that were given to them came out on top here. Mexico was awarded three points in the victory, and France was awarded zero in their loss.

Spain vs. Switzerland (España vs Suiza) World Cup 2010 – In the most shocking game of this years World Cup, the Swiss team was able to beat Spain. Their 1-0 victory, which could not have been predicted by anyone, was a huge shock and a huge accomplishment for the Swiss team. Spain was greeted with delight from many spectators who had been displeased with the boring matches that have been payed thus far throughout the World Cup. While the game was close, and low scoring, the monumental victory was enough to re-energize the fans of the World Cup. While the people of Switzerland celebrated, the people of Spain watched on in shock.

Fans descended into the streets in Switzerland to celebrate the victory. “You know in general the Swiss have never been very chauvinistic, never very enthusiastic in that way,” said Fred Hirzel, a football journalist. “But already I can see people outside with their Swiss flags and Klaxons. We will have to change our habits – normally it’s the Portuguese or Brazilians celebrating.”

The country erupted with the win, and many flocked to pubs and bars in the country to celebrate the victory. The victory gives the nation a sporting boost that it has been looking for for quite some time. It shows that the country is still interested in their teams, even when they are not considered to be a favorite in the match or even a contender in the tournament. This latest win may have changed all that.
Gelson Fernandes was able to score the winning goal in the match. He has reserved his place in history, as being the only person to score in one of the biggest upsets in the history of the World Cup.
