Recently, I took some time off from this blog to re-analyse the blogosphere and what it has for me. My journey took me to several blogs on different topics and niches, and I've learned a lot more about blogging, niche topics, SEO, etc.

I've been working on a project the last 2 months and successfully launched a blog called StartupsNigeria. The blog reviews and analyses web startups in Nigeria, as well as tech/mobile products and services in Nigeria that are making an impact in today’s new web space. Since I've been following startup news and tech trends around Europe, US and Australia, I noticed that global blogs on Web 2.0, Technology, and Social Networking rarely cover the web 2.0 industry in Africa.

My goal with StartupsNigeria is to showcase Nigerian Web 2.0 startups, social networking/media and bookmarking sites that are creating a buzz around the world. The idea is to connect global web-savvy blogs and businesses with those in Nigeria, as well as to empower new Web 2.0 startups in Nigeria to developing technologies and applications that would add value to users.

TheCollegeLife.com - A New Facebook?

TheCollegeLife, is probably the next generation in social networking for college students. The new social online community for students by students offers a centralized forum that allows students to interact with peers on their campus as well as others across the country. The site provides college kids a place to call their own without worrying that high school students and their parents could access their profiles.

Though fashioned like Facebook, the new social site is not keen on taking over the world, but has limited its membership to only college students, so you need a valid school email address to join TheCollegeLife. The site currently on beta version looks too simple and welcomes suggestions and criticisms.

TheCollegeLife has basic features like other social networks such as blogs, profiles, image galleries and messaging. Plus, TCL features a video section, and forums for students to share and discuss life, assignments, profs, and just about anything they like. The site is continuing to improve and other great features are in the offing. So watch out!

Whether or not TheCollegeLife would be widely accepted by college kids and schools around the world remains unknown. What we know is that it can never compete with Facebook.

Have you ever wanted a place where you can meet people and discuss current events and politics while networking? The place is Livesteez - a new online social network and a forum especially devoted to urban youth which allows members to upload and share videos, discuss current events and politics, as well as network.

Livesteez news feeds and discussion boards almost exclusively feature Hip-Hop- or African-American- focused stories. View here, here and here. Livesteez is a perfect example of a specific social networking community that does not rest on its demographic differences, but adds innovative applications (video sharing in a social network, exclusive artist contracts) to keep its technology current and members satisfied.

But Livesteez might need to promote it's site better to reach audiences. The discussion forums seems to be begging for attention (who cares to talk?) and Livesteez appears to have just a handful of members.

Fiction Folks Mash And Make Money At StoryMash.com

Now, this really got my attention. Probably because I have a flare for fiction. A new social community called StoryMash, for collaboration, constructive criticism and a place to experiment and discover different writing styles is mashing up fiction readers and writers together.

StoryMash is a place where fiction folks start new stories, continue existing stories, or take a story in a different direction by adding a chapter to its middle! All the while earning money for every chapter they publish on StoryMash. If you are a reader, you can vote for your favorite chapters and choose how you want the story to continue. After reading a chapter you can select from among multiple followup chapters. And while reading a chapter if you have a great idea on what should happen next, you can register and submit a followup chapter!

The idea is similar to Helium where writers are paid from $20 to $200 for each article selected by their partner publishers. The difference is that with StoryMash, you pay yourself for each work you publish on StoryMash depending on the number of votes you get for your story.

Here is how it works:

If you're a fiction writer and want the world to know about your work, you will post your story to StoryMash.com. Then, other authors can add follow-up, or even middle chapters to existing chapters written by others. Branching chapters compete with each other based on the vote ranking of registered readers. Eventually, the best storylines will evolve into the most entertaining, and profitable storytelling possible.

The whole idea is a a collaborative system of user generated content where StoryMash provides a fair contract for writers; writers keep their copyright, and grant StoryMash a non-exclusive license so that StoryMash can adapt and possibly resell combined works. Plus, all authors are paid over 50% of all revenue made by the content they publish.

There are also periodic writing contests, and this February, over $500 in prizes will be given away. So start posting on StoryMash by share your creative writing with the world, and earning some cool cash.

Tadinky Launches and Invites Members Suggestions

Tadinky.com, the latest lifestyle portal for connecting with friends, announced today the beta launch of it's new Wiki-style website, opening the door to innovative changes suggested by its members.

The social site's founders are hoping to avoid the mistakes of social giants such as MySpace, Friendster and Facebook that have "all had their limitations, as proven by disgruntled members, while refusing to implement any changes or ideas offered by their members." For their business 'their customers (users) are always right'. Thus, they have welcomed suggestions for improvement of the site. Sounds like a humble beginning, huh?

Tadinky is launched in beta form as a stripped-down version of a standard social networking website while awaiting the first qualified suggestion. The new website has the usual features of social networks such as profiles, photos, blog, email, instant messaging, etc. The site currently has 22 members, 6 friends, 2 blog entries and 1 comment. Unfortunately, it has no traffic rank yet from Alexa.

MC Hammer To Launch Video Sharing Site Called DanceJam.com

Former rapper MC Hammer, is readying the launch of a new social website, which would be similar to Youtube.com, the leading online video sharing site, or is it meant to compete with Youtube?

The site called dancejam.com, would offer users a place to watch and post dance videos, since we can't touch it, we can watch and feel it "online". According to SoundSlam, Hammer (real name Stanley Burrell) and his partners have reportedly complied 100 gigabytes of dance footage which will be used to launch the site in mid January. The site will host head-to-head dance competitions, and also give viewers tips on how to perform their favorite dance moves.

Last February, MC Hammer visited the youtube offices, as part of his interests in launching a video sharing site. You can watch the video below.

According to HipHopGalaxy, it was reported that James McQuivey, an analyst at Forrester Research claims that Hammer could find it difficult getting people away from YouTube, which listed 1.7 million dance videos last month alone.

Well, YouTube users will have to decide what they want, and if they "can't touch this", maybe they can dance this.

Will the White House Be Housing Social Networks in 2008?

Who said social networks would not be allowed into the White House in 2008? If you are not aware, a few U.S. Presidential Candidates are already using this new social media to connect their supporters together.

Earlier this month, the Republican Candidate Rudy Giuliani launched a social network called Team Rudy. Other candidates are using the social media for their various campaigns also. See Barack Obama, John McCain amongst others. Now, you can share your Ron Paul love with other supporters at RonsPeople.com

As with any social network, you can post music, videos, pictures and more to provide the world with more assurances of your Ron Paul love. (And you can't miss how “EVOL” in “revolution” is highlighted) Read it backwards and you get "LOVE"!

One unique feature of Ron's social campaign site is that it allows supporters to create multiple user profiles so you can get a handle on your privacy. You might wonder what you would have to hide from other supporters, but it's your choice.

Unfortunately, nothing seems spectacular beyond the standard social networking fare of messaging and so on, but this one is going to be driven solely by content and the true ability to network with others who share your common cause.

We'll see if social networks will stay at the White House come next year or if it's just a means to an end.

SocialCrunching Becomes Beta

I started this blog just 4 weeks ago and my experience with blogging about social networking has been very challenging. For one thing, there is always something related to social networking to blog about and even with other projects on my shoulders, this blog has been able to be relatively consistent with quality posts, decent traffic, and just a few readers.

At the moment, I've decided to concentrate on blogging about social network startups only, which I've been doing, except that the blog has covered so more information about existing social networks such as Myspace, Facebook, etc.

I've been reading Mashable and other social networking blogs and I've come to a conclusion that these blogs post practically anything that forms news around social networks and more. Thus, this blog SocialCrunch will now create a niche by posting gists, news and info about new social networks in any industry or field whether, music, fashion, sports, professions, etc, thus profiling them in relation to new and existing trends in the social media webspace.

I have called this new dimension the blog is exploring SocialCrunch Beta!:)

Red Room Writing Society Gets More Funding

The social network site for authors, The Red Room, has raised $1.25 million from angel investors, including Craig Newmark, author Rober Mailer Anderson and Nion McEvoy, CEO of Chronicle Books. With a small army of authors already supporting The Red Room, its social network looks to be going in the direction of a promotional hub for writers.

The site offers tools, such as blogs and book tour calendars for writers to promote themselves and connect with their fans. Thus, we can say that it serves authors the same way MySpace serve bands. Red Room(mates), Alice Walker and Amy Tan are just some of the high profiled authors that have pages on The Red Room.

As the social networking fever is gripping web enthusiastes, it is not surprising to see a growing trend for authors seeking networking and promotional tools on the web. Meanwhile, sites like Helium, StoryLink,TurnHere, BooksConnect , BookTour, Shelfari, amongst others continue to create online spaces for writers and authors to promote themselves with more web 2.0 tools.

The founder of The Red Room, Ivory Madison, also started the Red Room Writers Society - a place for writers to work on their projects and take part in seminars and workshops.

LinkedIn Launches Intelligent Application platform

LinkedIn, the social networking site for business professionals is finally unveiling a new application branded LinkedIn Intelligent Application platform that would allow third-party developers to build applications that work within the social network.

Using the API, developers will be able to create widgets and integrate LinkedIn data into other applications, as well as create applications that will integrate with LinkedIn. Google’s OpenSocial platform is sure to be supported, and some others are also planned.

The company has also announced an application with BusinessWeek. The application will let readers of a BusinessWeek article search their LinkedIn networks of personal connections for people associated with companies mentioned in the story in a mouseover popup style. Something Mashable thinks is not the best way to introduce the API. View a preview of the application here.

LinkedIn says it will take a more cautious approach, looking for companies that add value to the site instead of throwing open the doors to everyone. Hmm, what does that suggest? That they want only business productivity applications and anything that doesn't fit that description (perhaps Facebook's applications) will not be welcomed?

Open Web Awards 2007 by Mashable

Now that the first phase of the Open Web Awards by Mashable is officially over, speaking of the nominations, you can now vote for your favorite large social network.

From the results so far, you will notice that Netlog.com has more votes (37.8%), with Facebook following behind (23.7%) and Vois.com on third position (10.1%). LinkedIn grabs 8.9% while Myspace gets 6.2%. I would be following the voting process as the day goes by. You will be able to vote up until 11:59pm PST on Sunday, December 16th.

Twitter Gets Banned in the United Arab Emirates

Twitter has joined the hallmark of social media sites banned by the United Arab Emirates due to its content being inconsistent with the religious, cultural, political and moral values of the United Arab Emirates. With this ban, the UAE has decided that its residents shall tweet no more.

The disabling of social networks is becoming increasingly popular. According to Mashable, YouTube experiences country-wide bans with a fair degree of regularity (Beijing, Thailand, Morocco, Australia, and others). Also, MySpace and Facebook have gotten so big that they don't bother about the number of countries that ban them.

But whether or not these social media sites are banned or blocked, as the case may be, users would continue to be loyal to them.

Oddpodz Networks With The Muzeum

Oddpodz, is a social networking site for creative people. Oddpodz launched its Beta site earlier this year and in six months, the network has grown rapidly with creative thinkers. What could be the attraction to Oddpodz?

Well, Oddpodz social networking members are not teenagers, in fact, their average age is 37. They are from all over the world; they're super creative and they primarily work as professionals in creative service industries, such as ad and marketing agencies, PR firms, and many are business entrepreneurs. They want more purposeful content that provides information to help grow their businesses; they need help locating trusted resources; and they would like to have a place online to go to be inspired to tackle creative challenges. And that has not been a challenge for Oddpodz.

But could there be something else? My curiousity paid off as I found out a place where creatives from around the world meet new friends, socialize, find inspiration, collaborate, express themselves, get entertained and do business - The Muzeum.

The Muzeum has interesting features such as the lobby, lounge, auditorium, triage, exhibits, pod garden and basement. There is also Cash for Creative, where members can get cash for their creative ideas.

Can Safe, Clean Online Communities Be Good Alternatives?

I recently wrote a post about a new social network called ConnectHit, launched on November 1 which claims to offer a safe, clean, fun alternative to popular sites such as Myspace and Facebook. But due to the huge attention that these popular social sites are gaining, it seems that little has been said about ConnectHit especially in the media.

After one month of launch, ConnectHit is having 12 members, 5 up from when I wrote the post on November 12. That's not really bad for a new social site. The site's got a user friendly interface and an interesting look. So what is really up? Is there a problem with the marketing? I'm hoping that David Zoffer, the founder of ConnectHit is asking these questions and more.

While we wait to see an increased traffic and membership strength from ConnectHit, an eye into another social network that also offers a safe, clean online community called our-social.com shows that the site is gaining popularity. I peeked into the site after I received a detailed profile from the social site's founder, Theresa Adams. The site's traffic by Alexa is increasing rapidly and it's forum currently has over 250 members.

Our-Social.com's goal is to provide a community free of profanity and pornographic material, a user friendly environment, a great place to meet friends and a place to share stuff with your friends and family.

In the meantime, I'll be following the trend of these safe, clean social networking alternatives and hoping that they really make great alternatives to the really popular sites .

Will Facebook 's Web Traffic Overtake Daunt Myspace?

Hmm, I bet Myspace didn't see this one coming. The leading social networking site has been striving to curb the threat of Facebook within the past months, but web traffic statistics now show Facebook has finally overtaken Myspace in daily page views and reach.

The Alexa’s new traffic statistics has made Facebook the sixth most viewed website worldwide, the spot previously held by Myspace. View the stats below:

The latest three months graph shows no substantial increase in Myspace’s traffic, while Facebook’s traffic consistently increased over the same period.

Recently, thousands of American Facebook members signed a petition to stop the new advertising program called Facebook Beacon, a behavioral tracking system which enables Facebook user's customers to share the actions they take on user's website with their Facebook friends. Some of the protest groups, however, paid Facebook to advertise on the site and therefore bring additional website traffic.

Though web traffic is one of the most important factors to determine the leading social networking site, other factors such as revenue conversion, membership size and level of active members play very important role. Currently with more than 50 million users, Facebook is still far behind Myspace with over 200 million users.

Whether Facebook will continue to gain its traffic momentum over Myspace is not the question. The real question is: Will Facebook eventually overtake Myspace's membership size?
