For anyone looking for a first job, exploring a career change, or just setting up for future success, social media is a proven platform for facilitating connections, demonstrating passions and interests, and ultimately landing the job. Joshua Waldman, author of “Job Searching with Social Media For Dummies” enables you to harness the power of the Internet to research and identify job opportunities, and create a strategy for securing a position.

Joshua will cover topics that he goes in-depth on in his workshops, such as: creating effective online profiles and resumes to sell your strengths; maintaining your online reputation (and ensuring that employers who Google you like what they find) and understanding electronic etiquette; using the power of personal branding and building your brand online; avoiding common pitfalls, such as jumping into filling out a social media profile without a strategy; getting to know Twitter, the only real-time job board with literally thousands of jobs posted daily; using social media sites to uncover opportunities in the “hidden job market” ahead of the competition; and much more.

The fall season welcomes the first-ever SOBCon Northwest conference to Portland, Oregon. So, to roll out the SoMe welcome wagon, Portland’s chapter of the Social Media Club is joining SOBCon to host a conference kick-off celebration. At 6:00 PM on the evening September 15th, 2011, the kickoff will be hosted at Grochau Cellars, where visitors who “Experience Winemaking Without The Drive” will gather for wine, food and fun! For $10 admission (which is just about the price of a single glass of an awesome vino!), or $20 at the door, you can rub elbows with many of the speakers, conference organizers, the Club’s Board and other special guests. You may even hear a few words from some of the speakers while you tour the urban winery and hear the wine makers story. Light nosh’s will be provided and there’s no doubt that countless dinner plans will materialize amongst the attendees, so you won’t want to miss this event!

Join us at Hall of Records, March 21st, as Rick presents “Return On Attention”. Rick’s topic focuses on these questions:

What IS the ROI of anything, especially new media? What’s the ROI of a 2 over 2 direct mail piece? What’s the ROI of in-store POS? How about a magazine ad—what’s the return on running an ad?

The ROI question has got to be the number one question asked. “If I’m going to adopt new media, what is the return on investment?”

We’ve got a fun-filled night planned, including Cuts From The Crates (stay afterwards and spin any vinyl record in the bins at Hall of Records), schwag, half-price sandwiches and happy hour prices. This event is free, with a cap of 50 attendees. Register Here!

7 PM – Cuts From The Crates – spin tracks from any vinyl in the bins in the DJ booth

Author, Certified Sommelier and Brand Strategist, Rick Bakas is globally recognized as a thought leader in the world of wine and social media. As the first Director of Social Media in the wine industry, he influenced new ideas and new concepts that connect wineries to new consumers through tweetup tours and global online wine tastings. Rick specializes in translating personal and corporate brands to new media. He is an adviser at Bakas Media, a new media branding agency in San Francisco.

We’re extremely excited that Rick is able to join us before heading overseas on a speaking tour. This event is limited to the first 50 who register, due to venue space limitations.

Portland State’s 2010 Digital Marketing Conference is on Monday, December 13. This year’s conference feature 3 tracks, 30+ speakers including 2 keynotes, Boston media maven C.C. Chapman, and futurist Brian David Johnson of Intel, a digital marketing boot camp, and an Ignite DMC.

Last year’s conference was very successful, so this year’s conference has expanded to the renovated Lincoln Hall 450+ auditorium and suites. Hear presentations on hyper-local to international business in Track 1 ranging from the local grocers’ use of social media to music, the arts and interactive media. Interact with PSU Digital Marketing Strategies certificate instructors in the Track 2 boot camp.

Submit your story for the Track 3 Ignite DMC and PSU will choose the most compelling stories to engage audiences in a theatre-in-the-round. Interact with content, speakers, and industry professionals at the backstage lunch, Powell’s Books photo-lab, and evening wrap party.

Register by November 19 to get the $165 conference fee, which is 15% off the early bird special, and add the Backstage VIP lunch for $25. Use “SMCdmc10” promotional code to receive the discounted conference fee. The event is sure to rock the house. Don’t miss it.

First, Bryan Rhoads (@BryanRhoads) took us through Intel’s social media policy training. Of course, he removed the Intel confidential portions and he didn’t require that we complete the online test, but we saw the entire training course. Bryan explained the thinking behind each area and many of the specific instances that apply to those areas.

Most of the training centered on ethics, an example being, “Be judicious! Everything on the Internet is public. If it gives you pause, take a pause.” The Intel code of conduct is paramount for being involved in social media and transparency seems to be the rule. This includes a reminder to “blog as you, do not ghost blog,” which was a typical corporate response to blogging and other social media activity in the early days of the medium.

Our second speaker was Kalei Taylor, a deputy city attorney with the City of Portland. Kalei started out by explaining that “government suffers from a lack of humor.” Then she backed that up with a presentation that described the issues she has dealt with in an 18-month odyssey to build a social media policy for the City of Portland–a quest that remains unfinished!

Kalei answered many questions on the slow speed government moves at addressing social media and mentioned that government has a cultural resistance to change. Then she backed up that resistance to change with a look at the special legal issues government faces in dealing with employees, the public, and protecting private information. She likened the contrast in public versus legal perspectives as the public seeing a bed of roses and legal viewing a giant face plant.

You can see what specific comments inspired questions, shocked attendees, and made for a lively discussion on social media policy by searching #smcpdx for November 16 dates.

We were really bummed that a lack of interest forced us yesterday to cancel our scheduled event at the Multnomah Athletic Club, which was supposed to happen today at 5:30 PM.

We were so bummed that the Social Media Club of Portland decided to organize a tweetup to give the local community a rare glimpse into how the US State Department uses social media and collaborative technologies to achieve their mission around the world.

We’ll be hosting an informal tweetup today, September 9th 2010 at Ringlers Pub, 1332 West Burnside Street, around 5:30 PM.

UPDATE: Don’t Confuse Ringler’s Pub at 13th and Burnside with Ringler’s Annex at 12th and Burnside.

Expect an informal event of networking and some interesting conversation about how our foreign relations apparatus uses the latest communications and collaboration tools and techniques. There will be a cash bar and expect the get-together to last till about 7:30 PM.

We also have word that some of the panelists from the original event may will be showing up to chat and provide their perspectives on social media and collaboration in the Government sector:

Deb Bryant, GOSCON Founder & Director, Oregon State University Open Source Lab
Skip Newberry, Economic Development Policy Advisor, Office of Mayor, City of Portland

Don’t miss this opportunity to find out how the US Government engages the world online! Stay tuned to our twitter stream for updates, @SocialMediaPDX

The meeting ran about 1.5 hours, longer than epxected, and people were still asking questions one on one after the panel ended. The range of subjects covered was wide but some of the discussion surrounded:

Privacy versus ID protection (anonymity)

Conflating online privacy and ID protection

The inability to anonymize data/the ability to de-anonymize data (a’la the AOL record fiasco)

OpenID

OAuth

Corporate privacy policies

Web services privacy policies

Recent research demonstrating young people acre as much as older people about privacy

European versus American concepts of privacy

Privacy paranoia

Amanda Mayhew mentioned two sources of information that many attendees were interested in researching further. Amanda sent the following:

Our panel on June 21 has the experience to give us a view from four different perspectives. They’ve spent years working and living online in one form or another.

Marshall Kirkpatrick follows tech subjects from ReadWriteWeb and has a distinct take on the privacy issue after covering how the industry struggles with the idea.

Aaron Hockley lives part of his life online, especially the growing business part that includes Hockley Photography, and can give us a complete view of how privacy hides and exposes a growing business operation.

Christine Arevalo will give us the view from ID Experts, a company built to prevent and repair data breaches for individuals and families, and companies in healthcare, financial services and other industries, as well as government agencies and universities in the public sector.

Amanda Mayhew, Corporate Secretary, General Counsel and Privacy Officer from EthicsPoint, a services company enabling small businesses up to Fortune 100 corporations to identify, investigate, and manage code of conduct issues that may affect customers or violate required compliance regulations.

John Anthony Hartman, Partner / Transmedia Producer at Evergreen Branded Media, is our moderator and will use his personal knowledge of dealing with privacy issues to guide the discussion.
