March 30, 2011 (Portland, Oregon) – Acclaimed Hollywood actor, producer and director Daniel Baldwin will be emceeing the 2011 SoMe Awards, recognizing the top social media campaigns from 2010 produced regionally and nationally.

Daniel Baldwin, recently relocated to Portland, will bring his wit and humor to the stage, introducing the 2011 SoMe Award winners during a lively ceremony at the Fez Ballroom.

The SoMe Awards are back this spring to honor the best in social media marketing and innovation. This year anyone in the U.S. can submit an entry. Deadline for submissions is extended to April 6, 2011.

Early bird registration for association members extended to November 19

Portland State’s 2010 Digital Marketing Conference is on Monday, December 13.  This year’s conference feature 3 tracks, 30+ speakers including 2 keynotes, Boston media maven C.C. Chapman, and futurist Brian David Johnson of Intel, a digital marketing boot camp, and an Ignite DMC.

Last year’s conference was very successful, so this year’s conference has expanded to the renovated Lincoln Hall 450+ auditorium and suites. The November 16, 2010, meeting was another high point for SMCPDX.

First, Bryan Rhoads (@BryanRhoads) took us through Intel’s social media policy training. Of course, he removed the Intel confidential portions and he didn’t require that we complete the online test, but we saw the entire training course. Bryan explained the thinking behind each area and many of the specific instances that apply to those areas.

Most of the training centered on ethics, an example being, “Be judicious! Everything on the Internet is public. If it gives you pause, take a pause.” The Intel code of conduct is paramount for being involved in social media and transparency seems to be the rule. This includes a reminder to “blog as you, do not ghost blog,” which was a typical corporate response to blogging and other social media activity in the early days of the medium.

Our second speaker was Kalei Taylor, a deputy city attorney with the City of Portland. Kalei started out by explaining that “government suffers from a lack of humor.” Then she backed that up with a presentation that described the issues she has dealt with in an 18-month odyssey to build a social media policy for the City of Portland–a quest that remains unfinished!

Kalei answered many questions on the slow speed government moves at addressing social media and mentioned that government has a cultural resistance to change. Then she backed up that resistance to change with a look at the special legal issues government faces in dealing with employees, the public, and protecting private information. She likened the contrast in public versus legal perspectives as the public seeing a bed of roses and legal viewing a giant face plant.

Join us on November 16th, where Digital Strategist Bryan Rhoads from Intel will provide a special training on Intel’s Social Media Policy. You’ll learn about Intel’s guidelines and policies for using social media, as well as how Intel developed a global social media training program for all employees, contractors, and agency partners.

As part of the presentation, Bryan will provide a mock training of what actual teams and employees must do to become Intel Social Media Practitioners (SMPs). The result will be a better understanding of how social media policies are developed and implemented into a business so that the business can effectively use social media in the workplace and with interacting with clients.

Kalei Taylor, Deputy City Attorney with the City of Portland, will do a brief presentation about her work developing Portland’s social media policy. She’ll share insights that may be unique to public entities, which have even more constraints and requirements than private or public companies.

Richard Boly is a career U.S. diplomat and currently the Director of the Office of eDiplomacy, an applied technology think tank for the United States Department of State. Previously, he was a National Security Affairs Fellow the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, where he launched the Global Entrepreneurship Program. He recently served in U.S. Embassy, Rome, where he developed and ran a program to promote entrepreneurship in Italy. Other embassy assignments include the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, and Paraguay. Richard is the most junior diplomat to win the Cobb Award for commercial diplomacy.

About 50 souls bravely traipsed to Webtrends after work on the first day of summer and they were rewarded with stimulating discussion and great Widmer Brothers beer.

Our panel was moderated by John Hartman(Evergreen Branded Media, @feedia), and included Aaron Hockley (Hockley Photography, @ahockley), Amanda Mayhew (Ethics Point), Christina Avrevalo (IDExperts), and Marshall Kirkpatrick (RWW, @marshallk) as participants. The meeting ran about 1.5 hours, longer than epxected, and people were still asking questions one on one after the panel ended. The range of subjects covered was wide but some of the discussion surrounded:

• Privacy versus ID protection (anonymity)
• Conflating online privacy and ID protection
• The inability to anonymize data/the ability to de-anonymize data (a’la the AOL record fiasco)
• OpenID
• OAuth
• Corporate privacy policies
• Web services privacy policies
• Recent research demonstrating young people acre as much as older people about privacy
• European versus American concepts of privacy
• Privacy paranoia

Updated 6/26/2010, 22:26 BREAKING NEWS: Twitter and FTC settle security charges. The FTC didn’t like the way Twitter handled users’ private data, new rules are in place and operations will be reviewed bi-annually for next ten years.

Privacy online is the hot topic of the day….er, month….well, at least the last year and maybe since Scott McNealy declared privacy dead in 1999. Privacy has been on the losing end of the stick ever since. Mark Zuckerberg said essentially the same thing in January 2010 and Apple/ATT have made a privacy mess with their new iPad, exposing names and account information on highly placed politicians and celebrities. Even Steve Jobs is taking a whack at redefining privacy.

Our panel on June 21 has the experience to give us a view from four different perspectives. They’ve spent years working and living online in one form or another.

• Marshall Kirkpatrick follows tech subjects from ReadWriteWeb and has a distinct take on the privacy issue after covering how the industry struggles with the idea.
• Aaron Hockley lives part of his life online, especially the growing business part that includes Hockley Photography, and can give us a complete view of how privacy hides and exposes a growing business operation.
• Christine Arevalo will give us the view from ID Experts, a company built to prevent and repair data breaches for individuals and families, and companies in healthcare, financial services and other industries, as well as government agencies and universities in the public sector.
• Amanda Mayhew, Corporate Secretary, General Counsel and Privacy Officer from EthicsPoint, a services company enabling small businesses up to Fortune 100 corporations to identify, investigate, and manage code of conduct issues that may affect customers or violate required compliance regulations.
• John Anthony Hartman, Partner / Transmedia Producer at Evergreen Branded Media, is our moderator and will use his personal knowledge of dealing with privacy issues to guide the discussion.

Director of Critical Incident Response, Christine Arevalo, has been with ID Experts for over seven years and is a founding employee. She has a B.S. in Criminal Justice Administration and has completed an Executive MS in Economic Crime Management. During her career at ID Experts, Christine has become very active in the legislative world of Information Security, and has worked hard in the drafting of bills that push for greater protection of PII and PHI. Her most notable work was with Oregon Senate Bill 583 which now makes breach notification a requirement. Christine has extensive experience in data breach and identity theft concepts, practices, and procedures; including victim restoration, risk assessment, data breach laws and compliancy issues affecting each client breach.

Amanda Mayhew, Corporate Secretary, General Counsel and Privacy Officer from EthicsPoint
Amanda Mayhew currently serves as General Counsel, Corporate Secretary and Privacy officer of EthicsPoint, Inc. In this capacity, she advises the organization on a variety of matters including international data privacy and security, intellectual property, and general corporate matters. Amanda is currently serving as President of the Oregon Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel, is a member of the Executive Committee of the Oregon State Bar’s Intellectual Property Section and is a board member of FrOLIO (Friends of Opportunities for Law In Oregon). She is past Chair of the Oregon State Bar’s Affirmative Action Committee and is a member of the following organizations: International Association of Privacy Professionals, the Oregon Minority Lawyers Association and the OSB Computer and Internet Law, Corporate Counsel and Intellectual Property Sections.
