These companies on the fortune 500 are a lot of time considered "old school" and a lot of times don't adapt to the new phases of technology so its pretty cool to see that they are using social media tactics. About 300 of the top 500 companies said that social media is an important part of the their company, which seems like a pretty large number considering how fairly new web 2.0 is.

http://www.dmnews.com/Companies-are-adopting-social-media-study-finds/article/94232/
Companies are adopting social media, study finds
Giselle Abramovich
January 24, 2007

A University of Massachusetts Dartmouth survey found that the fastest growing Inc. 500 companies adopt blogging, podcasting and other social media as business tools and a majority of companies consider social media to play significant strategic role.
The study was conducted by Inc. magazine's Inc. 500 and the Center for Marketing Research at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. It shows that big companies are comprehensively involved in social media.
Two out of three of the Inc. 500 companies cited social media as playing a "very important" or "somewhat important" role in their business and marketing strategies. Twenty-six percent reported it is "very important," while 40 percent ranked it "somewhat important."
Forty-two percent of respondents claim to be "very familiar" with social networking. Thirty-eight percent are "very familiar" with message and bulletin boards, 36 percent with blogging, 31 percent with online video, 30 percent with podcasting and 16 percent with wikis.
Thirty-three percent of the companies use message/bulletin boards. Social networking was a resource for only 27 percent.
Nearly one quarter, or 121, of the Inc. 500 companies participated in the study, making the data statistically valid with a margin of error at +/-3 percent. Respondents were diverse in size, industry and location. They included four of the top 10, seven of the top 25 and 22 of the top 100 companies on the list.

Myspace implements social media networking safety plan

Myspace has agreed to begin taking steps in order to stop harmful materials and other negative aspects of social media. Not only are they taking steps creating technology that will help ensure the safety of users and make it difficult for them to lie about their age, they are also educating people about the risks and preventative measures to take.

This is interesting because the issue of how to regulate the internet has been one of great discussion. Before opening the post i didn't think that the concept was actually added to Facebook. This is a great achievement for the Entrepreneurship Club. For those of you that have not read the email the concept is added in a form of an application named "Online Idol." Currently users can download the application at http://apps.facebook.com/onlineidol/preview.php. Within 3-4 weeks users will be able to upload videos of their singing performance. They can then send them to their friends, who can vote and share them with additional friends. The top ranked videos from around the country will then compete in a weekly competition and the winner will become the first Online Idol.

PostSecret

I've already shared this site with some of you in class, but for those of you who haven't experiences PostSecret then I suggest you check it out. It was created by Frank Warren on January 1,2005. The concept of the site was that people decorate a postcard and portray a secret that they had never previously revealed. There are no restrictions on the content, simply it must be completely truthful and must never been spoken before. Secrets range from sexual acts to crime to confessions of hopes, dreams, desires, and embarrassing habits. Every Sunday, the site is updated and 20 deserving secrets are selected and posted. I definitely think everyone should check it out and maybe even send in a secret of your own!

It could happen to you

Hey guys. I was browsing the web and came across this article. It's about this seventeen year old high school drop out who created her own website, Whateverlife.com, and is now a millionaire. It was originally posted back in September 2007, but I still thought it was a cool article.

A 17-year-old high school dropout. Made more than $1 million. Earns as much as $70K a month. Owns a website that attracts more than 7 million monthly visitors and 60 million page views.
Her first Adsense paycheck was $2,790 and she has already rejected a $1.5 million buyout offer. I’m referring to Ashley Qualls, the founder of Whateverlife.com, a free MySpace layouts website.
Fastcompany recently published a fascinating feature article on Ashley, a teenage entrepreneur from Detroit who has made a substantial amount of money online by targeting a niche market (girls on Myspace/social networks) and fulfilling their needs.
Ashley is evidence of the meritocracy on the Internet that allows even companies run by neophyte entrepreneurs to compete, regardless of funding, location, size, or experience–and she’s a reminder that ingenuity is ageless.

She has taken in more than $1 million, thanks to a now-familiar Web-friendly business model. Her MySpace page layouts are available for the bargain price of…nothing. They’re free for the taking. Her only significant source of revenue so far is advertising.
Like other high traffic websites, Whateverlife.com runs CPM ads by Casale Media and Value Click, alongside Google Adsense and Nabbr, a revenue sharing video widget. The integration for each ad type is relatively well done and not too intrusive. The main problem is that Ashley doesn’t seem to be selling ads directly, which is a huge loss considering the amount of traffic she gets.
Currently, a site like Techcrunch makes $10K per 125 x 125 ad block and that’s with 4.0 million page views per month. Whateverlife gets 15 times more page views ...
According to the article, Whateverlife.com has a larger audience than the combined circulation of magazines like Seventeen, Teen Vogue, and CosmoGirl!. This is something remarkable.

Social Media Project

Hey everyone!
For my social media project I decided to make a slide show recapping some of the amazing moments that made up my senior year. They have added once again, a new feature to the facebook homepage that allows you to see "People You May Know. This new box picks up various people that may be connected to you through mutual friends and have the same networks or hometowns featured in their profiles. It also provides the users name and picture for you to decide on whether or not you really do know them and perhaps would like to add them to your friend list. I recently found an old friend I never knew had facebook based on this new feature and I so I personally found this feature very useful and interesting. So for all of you havn't been on facebook recently, you should check it out and you never know who have been missing out on being facebook friends with.

Semester is Over

noreply@blogger.com (Adriana M. Read it and provide some comments if you would like.

CBS has announced a deal with YouTube in which the TV network will launch CBS Sports NCAA Tournament Channel on the YouTube site. The channel, to be sponsored by Pontiac, will feature NCAA tournament game clips and highlights, uploaded by College Sports Television (a unit of CBS) in near real time, from the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship, which begins airing today (March 15) on CBS. The site will also show postgame press conferences and other tournament video produced by CBS Sports.

The channel will also include links to CBS Sports, CBS Sportsline, CSTV and the NCAA’s official Web site, NCAASports.com, which will facilitate fans moving back and forth from YouTube to the full games being shown online through NCAA March Madness on Demand.

“Through this agreement, CBS is monetizing its content on the Internet and proving that world-class programming can help bring brand-name advertisers to online platforms,” said Sean McManus, president, CBS Sports and News.

“The NCAA Tournament is consistently one of the most exciting experiences in all of sports,” said Suzie Reider, head of ad sales for YouTube. “Tournament coverage is a welcome addition to the site. We’re hopeful this partnership will introduce the tournament and NCAA basketball to an even wider audience than it already enjoys.”

As part of the deal, YouTube will encourage users to vote on their favorite round-by-round Pontiac “Game Changing Performances” at NCAASports.com. The top vote-earning team will be announced live on CBS during halftime of the championship game on Monday, April 2. The winning team’s school will receive a $100,000 general scholarship from Pontiac.

This is great for college athletics. It allows these athletes to showcase their success to a wide range of fans as well as have quick and easy access to their clips. I also like how Pontiac will grant a scholarship to the team with the most votes. This is a great move for the NCAA as well as YouTube... So what do you think?

Viral Video

Our viral video is about an HP battery burn. I decided to make a video incorporating pictures and music from Spring Break in Acapulco. It was an amazing vacation and I wanted to capture that essence in the video. I also saw this as an opportunity to share my thoughts with the people I met on Spring Break. Thanks to technology, I was able to upload the video for all to see. I am glad I did this project because I will be able to go back and re-live Spring Break 2008 for years to come.

Love is All We Need

Ryan Center MySpace

Hey Everyone,

For my project I took my proposal to the next step. I had talked to my supervisor about the MySpace Page and she thought it was a great idea to fix it. As many of you remember the last one was really plain and boring. I re-did the Ryan Center's MySpace page and people at work agree it's much better. Here's the link to the page so you can check it out.

http://www.myspace.com/theryancenter

It's still a work in progress and I never have done a MySpace before so it's an interesting experience. If you have MySpace please friend us, maybe even make a comment on our wall saying how much better it looks :) or if you can post some comments on this post of any other ideas we could use some more student input.

Social Media Project:

Hey guys,

For my final project, I chose to do something in Flickr.

I posted pictures that I have taken in Syria a few years ago. (I had to actually scan the pics up so the quality isn't great) My family is from Syria and my family and I usually spend a good portion of our summers there. People don't usually know too much about it so I thought I'd share the pictures. Also, I wanted to share what it's like there because I usually get questions like:

"do you ride camels there?"
"do you have cars?"
"does it really look like Aladin?"
"what types of clothes do you have to wear there?"

so check it out...heres the link

http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarahomsi/sets/72157604638279262/

Semster Project

My semester project is based on the family business I am a part of. My father is a cabinet maker and he designs things for a wide range of customers. One thing we noticed is that potential clients wanted to see many different pictures of what he has done in the past.

We have a web site but it was difficult to get a wide range of pictures on the site and difficult to view them. I decided to make a flikr account that is linked to the web site that is clicked through.

I decided to make a Flikr account because the way you view pictures is very easy, and the format looks better than the website. It is also easier for my father to upload pictures if i am busy, which was difficult for him to do on our hosting site.

The end result would be for former clients to comment on the work he has done on the flikr site. Our previous clients like to go back and see their pictures on the web site and friends, this way they may be able to comment on the flikr site which potential clients would see.

http://www.setakdesign.com

Above is the website, please find the flikr link - i would like to see if it is easy to navigate to.

Creative Floral Designs, semester long project

Ever since she first began making flower arrangements for our home, I knew my Mom had a talent for what she did. She had never taken a class or studied at a university to receive a degree in the subject, but somehow she knew exactly how to compose beautiful flower arrangements; she has the knack. As her interest grew, my Mom experimented more and more with different styles and materials suitable for various decorative purposes within a home. Her friends began to recognize her unique ability and began requesting her assistance within their homes. Now that we have been assigned this social media project, I decided to help my Mom introduce herself and her pieces of work. I will create a MySpace page for my Mom and give her the opportunity to join one of the largest social networks in the world and share her passion for creating flower arrangements. Hope you enjoy and feel free to friend her!

Valerie Hinds' MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/valhinds1

Semester Project

Since I've been pretty tied up with school and work, I haven't had much chance to travel as much as I would have liked.
