Go on a hike with a park ranger at Raven Rock State Park to look for bats. You'll also construct an origami bat and participate in an outdoor game that illustrates the unique adaptations of our local bats. Meet at the Visitor Center at 5pm.

Head out to the Goldston Fire Department for the South Chatham Ruritan Club's annual chili cook off (2-6pm). There will be live music and door prizes. Eat for just $7/person.

Most people spend the first day of a new year making lists of changes to make and habits to form, but you can skip that step and jump right into fun with these special New Year's Day options near Sanford/Lee County:

Go on a "First Day" Hike at Jordan Lake
Where: Ebenezer Church, Shelter 8, 280 State Park Road, Apex NC
When: 10am
What: Hike a one-mile loop trail that passes the site of the historic Ebenezer Church. You can expect to see large hollow oaks, ponds, fensrows, and clues of the area's farming heritage. This will be an easy hike for children, too.
Cost: Free.

Eat Up for Good Luck
Where: Jeff & Lisa's Brickhouse Grill, 1401 Colon Road, Sanford NC
When: 11am-2pm
What: Feast on a traditional New Year's meal made with many locally sourced ingredients.
Cost: Varies.

Explore Raven Rock on a "First" Hike
Where: Raven Rock State Park picnic shelter, Lillington NC
When: 2pm
What: A park ranger will guide a 2.5-mile hike around the park, making several stops to talk about the surroundings. Bring your own water and be sure to dress appropriately.
Cost: Free.

Join the Otter Club on the Deep River
Where: Carbonton Dam Park on Hwy 42, Sanford NC
When: 9:30am-3:30pm
What: This 14th annual canoe trip is open to new and veteran canoers. You'll start at Carbonton Dam Park and end at McIver Landing. Meet at 9:30am to shuttle the vehicles; the paddle will start at 10am.
Cost: Free, but you must reserve your space by calling Dickie Harrison at 919-356-5678.

Go Sledding with the Broadway Optimists
Where: Broadway Optimist baseball field, Broadway NC
When: 6-9pm
What: The Optimists are having five tons of snow pumped into the field to create a Winter Wonderful for local families to have fun in.
Cost: $5 per child.

Say Farewell to Christmas 2011
Where: Christmas Lane, 15-501S toward White Hill/Carthage NC
When: 5-10pm
What: Take one last look at the Jackson Brothers' huge display of holiday lights. This will be the last night until Christmas 2012.
Cost: Free.

You don't have to look far for fun events to help you celebrate the end of 2011 and the coming of 2012. Here's a round up of NYE parties, activities, and celebrations that offer a little something for everyone.

(Note that each adults-only event is offering a list of cabs and other options to help you get home. Make sure you plan ahead to keep yourself and everyone else safe!)

FAMILY FRIENDLY

Have a Hootin’ Fun New Year’s Eve
Where: Raven Rock State Park Visitor Center
When: 11am
What: A park ranger will talk about the history of local owls. The Wildlife Rescue Center will bring live owls.
Cost: Free.

Skate The Year Away
Where: DoubleDecker Skatepark, 500 Blount Street, Fayetteville NC
When: 6pm-2:30am
What: Kids of all ages can welcome the new year on four wheels at this indoor skate park.
Cost: $10

First Night Raleigh
Where: Fayetteville Street, Raleigh NC
When: 2pm-12:30pm
What: A full day of family-friendly activities and performances, including an "acorn drop" (see detailed schedule here).
Cost: $9 in advance, $12/adult or $10/child at the gate

First Eve in Southern Pines
Where: Downtown Southern Pines along Broad Street
When: 6-8:30pm
What: There will be a variety of activities and entertainment for the whole family and a “pinecone drop” at 8:30pm.
Cost: Free.

New Year’s Eve Party In The Park
Where: Festival Park, Downtown Fayetteville NC
When: 6:30pm-12:30am
What: Watch a live feed from Times Square while enjoying live performances by Joyner, Young & Marie and Tommy G and The Fixers. There will also be a children’s area with an early fireworks show (8:30pm). A dogwood will “bloom” (drop) at midnight.
Cost: Free before 9pm, $5 after 9pm.

New Year's Sleepover with G-Force

When: 7pm-8:30am
What: There will be movies, games, an obstacle course and more. Bring your pillow and sleeping bag, and your friends!

When: 1pm-1am

New Year's Party at The Flame

When: 9:30pm-2am (dinner special from 4-9:30pm)
What: A live DJ will play from 9:30pm until Tim Hair goes on at 11:20pm. After a midnight toast, there will be another DJ until 2am.
Cost: No cover before 9:30pm.

General Store Cafe’s Awesome New Year’s Eve Party!
Where: 39 West Street, Pittsboro NC
When: 8pm-1am
What: Enjoy hors d’oeuvres, party favors, a champagne toast, and a $10 coupon toward any entree. A full dinner menu will be available until 10:30pm and a late night menu will be available until 1am. Justin Johnson and The Grand Ole Uproar will perform.
Cost: $25 in advance, $30 at the door.

New Year's Eve at Exile on Main St

The Clockwork Ball: A Steampunk Masquerade

Today's recap:

Bring a dog or cat home for the holidays -- and then send them back. Call Carolina Animal Rescue & Adoption at 774-9433 or go to their website to ask about their "Rent a Dog or Cat" program!

There's still time to help provide Christmas gifts for the children at Haven In Lee County. The For Haven's Sake group will be at Haven today (1-7pm) to distribute gifts and are still in need of items for girls ages 7-11. Please help them out!

If you know someone who'll be alone on Christmas or if you're looking for a place to volunteer, don't forget about the annual Christmas day meal at St Luke. All details are here.

A local family has lost its home to fire and is in desperate need of help. Matt 6 has a list of links of items the group is collecting to share with the family.
