To get the most out of your blog you will need to avoid these five most common mistakes.

Blogging has rapidly become one of the most popular online activities. Some people use them just to vent their ideas, while others are attempting to use their blog to launch a writing career. Blogs offer an easy way to publish your work, which will help get your name out there and start to develop an audience. Some of the most popular websites on the Internet started as personal blogs. However, to get the most out of your blog you will need to avoid these five most common mistakes.

Lack of Patience

As with any worthwhile endeavor, a good blog will take some time to get popular. You may have read or heard about personal blogs that exploded overnight, but these are extremely rare. Most of the time it will take a great deal of patience and time to establish an audience for your work. You should not expect to get 100,000 hits on your first post. By taking your time and developing the blog slowly you can build a loyal audience that will spread your work around. The best and most successful blogs took years to develop. Bloggers that lack patience will likely give up before they’ve even given their blog a chance.

No Passion

You should try to choose a blog that deals with something you love and are passionate about. If you are not passionate, the readers will sense it and go away. Readers can quickly sniff out blogs that were written just to get hits or are only being used for promotion. If you are passionate about your work, readers will be more likely to read it and pass it along.

Too Concerned with Making Money

If you got into blogging to get rich then you will probably be disappointed. The best blogs are ones that develop followers naturally. Only after getting an audience should you start to worry about making money from your blog. People too concerned with making money end up making compromises that affect the quality of their work. If you are writing just to get hits, it probably won’t be very interesting. You should go into this endeavor not expecting to make anything from it in the beginning and never let your work be compromised by the desire to get rich.

Posting too Much

Nothing drives readers away quicker than a blogger that is constantly posting. Many new bloggers think that they should post as many times as possible. However, it is best to be selective and only post when you have some interesting writing to share. Not only do some bloggers post too much, but their posts are also too long. You should avoid large blocks of text, as readers will usually not take the time to read them. Try to add interactive elements to your blog such as comments or polls, which will keep readers interested and involved. When a reader does post a comment, try to reply to it, as this will keep them engaged and coming back for more.

Not Using Social Media

Social media sites like Facebook and Twitter are simply the most valuable marketing tools available. Not only can they get your work in front of many people, but they are free! If you are not taking advantage of this free form of advertising then you are missing out. Social media sites are also a great way to build an audience, as you can first share your work with friends and family that are more likely to read it. Social media sites will also help you to stay on top of the latest trends and topics, which can be a great way to generate idea for content.

Facebook has finally updated its cover photo guidelines so that marketers are much better able to conduct business and present ads on the social media site.

In the past, you may have spent hours upon hours getting around Facebook’s cover photo guidelines. You may have even started writing an e-book on how to get around these guidelines, because your ideas are just that stellar. Before you start self-publishing and formatting, Facebook has updated its cover photo guidelines.

Facebook has finally updated its cover photo guidelines so that marketers are much better able to conduct business and present ads on the social media site. They have scrapped some of the old rules that have put stringent guidelines on what you can and cannot do with your cover photo, becoming more lenient and business-friendly.

Scrapped Rules

In the past, Facebook has wagged their fingers at companies putting discounts, calls to action, contact information, using ‘like’ or ‘share’ photos and encouraging content sharing. Finally understanding that these rules are nonsense and can prevent a business from flourishing on the web, they have crossed these off their list of no-nos.

The only rule that you still have to follow is the 20% content rule. Your cover image may only include 20% text. Although, it goes without saying, the rules of general decency and legality still apply that used to apply for uploading cover photos.

Facebook has implemented a new layout, which heavily emphasizes visuals. The changes have come along with this new layout. Who knew that people would rather look at pictures than pages upon pages of text?

So, feel free to tell your customers to “Get it Now!” or wave your business’s contact information all over your cover photo if you like. You can even tell your customers to ‘like’ your page and design a massive arrow pointing to the button. Facebook is your oyster for marketing whatever product you have – even oysters.

What it Means

What this means for marketers is the ability to generate more leads, and more income. Having a cover photo that entices a user to click onto a business’s page, you can garner their attention and loyalty even before they have seen your content.

Before, cover photos were limited in what they could do. They were like prime real estate with a bunch of overgrowth just waiting to be bulldozed. Now that Facebook has cleared a path, marketers can now take advantage of this space, and use it to better their business and generate more leads.

Did Facebook just do this because it was impossible for them to manually police cover photos? Probably, but we’re glad they did. Kudos, Facebook – but it’s about time…

Whether you are in the market to buy a domain or ready to sell one you already own, Aftermarket has the tools and marketplace you need.

Owning your own domain has many advantages. When selling your products and services or advertising a non-profit organization, few mediums can get you noticed on a massive scale like your own website. Even major government entities have their own domains!

By: Michele Neylon – CC BY-NC-SA 2.0

Creating and managing a site on your own can also be very rewarding. However, many site owners find that professional web hosting services best suit their needs. Web hosting comes in a broad array of prices and available services. A plan is often needed before building a website, just like any business needs a sound business plan. Once a workable plan is in place you will be better suited to judge your website needs and whether professional services are required for your domain.

When searching the internet for a place to buy premium domain names, Aftermarket.com can quickly get you what you are looking for. Whether you are in the market to buy a domain or ready to sell one you already own, Aftermarket has the tools and marketplace you need. You can buy domains directly from Aftermarket’s complete list of available sites or can buy from their unique auction-style marketplace format. With options such as private auctions, live public auctions and even “buy now” options in the auction format, the domain you need is just a few clicks away.

A look at the new Facebook Page Admin Panel. You will now see a posts area with the option to boost posts for a small fee.

Having a Facebook Page is always vital, especially if you are into promoting your brand, or your products or services online. You always strive to reach out towards your target audience, and your Facebook Page enables you to do so. Your target audience will just “like” your Page, and everything else will fall into place. As an admin of your Page, you are able to track down your progress through your Page’s Admin panel. Here, you are able to see what is going on in your Page, from messages and notifications from your followers to your Page’s Insights.

While your online marketing strategy of using your Facebook Page to reach potential online followers is a long-term commitment, you must know that the social media platform that you are using is subject to certain changes, not matter how major or minor these may seem to be. In fact, in your Page Admin panel, the notifications that you see there have been replaced with a new Posts area.

With the new Posts feature in your Admin Panel, you will see all the posts you’ve made on your Page arranged in a table view. There, the title of the post is shown, as well as the Total Reach or the number of people who possibly read your post. A column on the rightmost part of the table shows you the “Boost Post” feature with a dropdown icon. When talking about “Boost Post” though, you must a pay a specific amount so that you can promote it to more and more Facebook users. In the lower right corner of the table is the first Page Tip which comes with a video on how you can promote your post.

The changes in your Page’s Admin Panel is somewhat a subtle jab for page owners like you to provide additional payment in order for your posts to be featured more and more towards your potential clientele or customers. It is like search engine marketing, in which a website is optimized in order to get to Page 1 of Google or any other search engine platform, therefore increasing the website’s likelihood of being visited. While you intend to get more and more fans to like your page, you have to literally pay the price. You also have to pay the price if you want your every page post to be seen by your fans, since the algorithm for Facebook, EdgeRank, usually hide your posts from your fans.

How EdgeRank works remains to be seen. On your part, you still have to keep your posts engaging for your fans by posting pictures and asking questions. However, it seems that doing may not actually be effective at all. In fact, including an image on a post would incur a 1-percent reach, whereas a post with pure text only gets 12-percent reach.

Overall, the changes in your Page’s Admin Panel is a welcome addition, but if you feel that you are being forced to pay just to promote your posts to those who are yet to “like” you page, then Facebook might not be a great fit for your social media marketing strategy. That is, unless, if you are promoting a product or service which target consumers. Click here for more info about social media and web marketing.

Mobile applications are essential to our lives, and even more essential are applications designed to backup and remotely access your data.

Mobile applications are essential to our lives nowadays, and even more essential are applications designed to backup and remotely access your data.

Sure they are not as fun to interact with as your favorite birds game, but they are critical when you need data that is residing at home, work, or even in the cloud. A lot of people take this for granted, or don’t place such an importance of being able to access that data, much less access it quickly. Organization is key here; being able to find what you need when you need it is not so easy in today’s miasma of information floating around.

Google Drive (Free)

With Google Drive, you get 5GB of space for your documents, files, or whatever. Since Google Drive was originally Google Docs, it’s ideal for keeping word, spreadsheet and PowerPoint documents, as well as any other documents you may need. It’s a free service that allows you to collaborate, and design documents and presentation format. Since it’s made by Google, the search feature is stellar. You can search by keyword, filter by type, or owner of the file, whatever you desire. With the application, you can make any file available offline (so you can have it forever!) and create documents and even take a photo of printed text and convert into a workable Google document format. If you want basic working documents on the go, this application cannot be beat.

(Android, iOS)

Mozy (Free)

The company that made a name for it backing up your data is taking it one step further with their Mozy application. Now, you can access and download your files, view your photos and keep that stellar encryption that made Mozy famous. Plus, you can add a 4 digit PIN to further protect those files. So if you need to back up your files, Mozy has a 2GB free plan, the application is free, and the protection is among the best in the business. Why wouldn’t you do it?

(Android, iOS)

Timeline Cloud Access (Free)

Here are five tips for improving your social media efforts.

Social media is a tough beast to master. If you’ve already gotten started in social media, you may run into a few bumps before you get the strategy down. Here are a few tips on fixing up your social media accounts.

1. Make It More Visible

One of the biggest mistakes you can make is to bury your social media efforts. This is a common mistake because social media is inherently separate from your blog or website, but there are easy ways to fix it. First, make sure that your social media feeds look just like you want them to. Then, when you are confident about your product, you should work to include more links to your social media pages in all of the content that you produce. If you have a brick-and-mortar location, you should offer customers social media information just as you would offer your business’s phone number and email address. On your company website, make sure you advertise your pages clearly, with icons for each social media account in prominent spots on the page.

By: Katherine Pangaro – CC BY-NC-SA 2.0

2. Connect with the Right People

Even if you have a large following for each of your social media accounts, you may be reaching all of the wrong people and none of the right ones. Take some time to consider what types of people you really want to reach using social media. Some will be customers. In this case, you will need to target your social media efforts directly to those people in order to grow a productive following. Some others will be potential business partners. Don’t be afraid to reach out to other companies or individuals using social media, as these types of informal communications can sometimes be the start of highly beneficial relationships.

3. Focus Your Efforts

Sometimes, small business and, in particular, individual entrepreneurs can lose track of what social media should really be used for. Personal accounts on various sites can of course be valuable for recreation and staying in contact with people you know. But it is important to keep the separation between business and pleasure in mind. You can use your business-related accounts in fun ways, but don’t diverge too far from your original goals with social media. Be sure that all of your efforts on those feeds are productive in some way, even if it is simply for providing some entertainment to your followers as a break from business-related content.

4. Play By Your Own Rules

There are a lot of tips out there for social media, including these ones. But the more you get caught up in following all of the tips out there, the further from your own brand and style you will tend to get. Make sure that your social media efforts emerge from your own ideas of connecting with people. The key to social media is increasing engagement, so focus more on the kind of interaction your social media feeds create than on how many followers you can rack up.

By: Steve Garfield – CC BY-NC-SA 2.0

5. Do Things for the Right Reasons

Above all, it is important that you use social media for the right reasons. Sites like Facebook and Twitter can definitely help your brand grow, but you shouldn’t be in it just for the money. Instead, think about how you can use social media to affect followers’ view of your brand. Not all of your efforts will translate directly into profits based on clicks, but you can certainly improve the way that other people think about your business or personal abilities. Utilize social media to make connections and engage in an authentic way, and you will find yourself enjoying the process a whole lot more.

However you are going to learn web design, there are benefits and drawbacks to each option. Learn what they are in this article.

When you want to learn how to design a website, there are lots of places to start. You can buy a thousand books on the topic, all of them absolutely brilliant. You could log on and find free websites which are dedicated to teaching web design. Then there’s the option of learning from others via a work placement or gaining industry experience. However you are going to learn web design, there are benefits and drawbacks to each option.

Books

You can find a wide variety of textbooks aimed at beginner web designers. These will guide you through HTML, PHP, JavaScript, jQuery or even CSS. Finding the right book will allow you to teach yourself web design at your own pace from any computer. You will be able to mark pages you think you will need time and again for easy access.

By: Ghislain SILLAUME – CC BY-NC-SA 2.0

The main problem with a book, is that as soon as it’s published the content is fixed. There will be no updates to the book in your hand. To help with this. some books will come with CDs or websites associated them, with live samples or demonstrations.

Online Resources

Using an online web design course allows you to create a program of study which is perfectly suited to your wants. You can choose exactly which sections of web design you want to learn. There are many free websites set up to help you learn any coding language with online coaches and forums. The forums give you access to a vast range of answers to any problems you face. You can post a question and receive an worked response from an online expert. Forums and online guides can be constantly updated, ensuring that the information you get is not for a previous version of your software.

By: Jason Garber – CC BY-NC-SA 2.0

Online guides are only as good as the person who wrote them. You must check the accuracy of the information they show. Searching the internet to check the reputation of the website, could save you months of being taught the wrong information.

Industry Experience and Work Placement’s

Working closely with an industry professional will let you experience first-hand how websites are created in the business world. Being able to discover industry standards in coding will ensure that all work you produce is capable of being used in the real world.

How a designer starts to design a website will be common across the entire industry, any skills that you learn from an experienced web designer will be transferable across the whole industry. Gaining access to a web design professional is not going to be easy, unless you already know one.
An informative article on the basics of social media. This would fit perfectly on a blog that features SEO and Social Media content.

As ubiquitous as both Twitter and Facebook have become in our daily lives, even the most obtuse business man or woman now understands the importance of social media. Unfortunately, what is often misunderstood and not well-explained is how even small businesses can utilize this form of media in order to not only gain new customers, but also to create brand loyalty among the existing customer base. Simply put, many business owners don’t know how to begin or where to turn to for information. While countless books have been written about the subject, much of the material presented by authors is more fluff than substance. To make matters even worse, social media is constantly evolving, producing new avenues of opportunity such as the rise of Pinterest in recent years. So instead of looking for a blueprint on how to exploit social media for profit, perhaps it is better for the business owner to instead learn the tried and true basics first, which will provide them with the necessary skills to develop their own strategies as the market dictates.

Step 1: Getting Started With A Very Basic Strategy

As all business men and women learn very quickly, time is the master. To what extent a business will wish to pursue a social media strategy largely depends on the amount of time and resources which can be applied to creating an online presence. If the business can afford to hire a dedicated social media worker, for example, then it will definitely be able to exploit more opportunities for profit. If, on the other hand, the small business owner has to dedicate a small portion of their own time to maintaining an online presence, then such a presence will inevitably will be more limited. Whichever situation you may find yourself facing, it is important to wisely choose the social platforms on which you will create and foster a social media presence.

By: Esther Vargas – CC BY-NC-SA 2.0

The three largest platforms today are Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest. MySpace is also still popular, although many experts consider it to be a dying platform. Once you’ve signed up for one or more of these sites, you’ll want to begin by providing useful content for the user. If your company or business already maintains a blog, then the content posted there can be linked to these social networks, providing your customers with valuable information while streamlining the process as compared to posting to each network individually.

For social media to be used effectively, a business must also connect their Facebook and Twitter pages with the existing e-commerce website. This is a very important step, as it is the easiest way for customers to learn about the new social network pages. Offering a small enticement such as a coupon or a special promotion for following the company on Facebook or Twitter is a very effective way to transform customers into loyal followers. After that, it is only a matter of continuing to build the brand by offering value to followers in the way of engaging content, additional discounts, and promotional events.

Step 2: Branding And Metrics

Perhaps the biggest reason why so many business owners are reluctant about aggressively pursuing a social media strategy is that they don’t know how to measure if it is effective or not. In fact, up until just a few years ago this was a major problem for even the largest of companies. Fortunately, since then there have been metric programs designed which allow for you to track conversions across social media pages. So you can understand not only the number of clicks you’re getting from Facebook or Twitter, but how many of those translate into paying customers.

While a number of scripts and software will allow for you to track conversions, in the long run the success of a marketing strategy can only be measured by the extent to which it increases brand awareness. The most successful companies all have ubiquitous brands, whether it is Coca-Cola or Microsoft. While small to medium businesses may never be able to match the success of these companies, they can use social media to increase influence and brand visibility among their own customers as well as in their local city or town. Fortunately, innovative startups such as Kred and PeerIndex, which monitor influence across social media platforms, are available so business owners both large and small can know how many people are discussing their company’s brand at any given moment.

Step 3: Developing Realistic Expectations And Targets

Management and business owners generally discover that what you get out of social media is proportional to what you put into it. Companies which can afford to dedicate more resources towards increasing their brand visibility will no doubt see a return of their investment in the form of greater sales and profit. Even more important, however, customers usually respond positively to robust social media presences by becoming more loyal to the brand over time.

While growing the bottom line is certainly the primary goal of all businesses, reducing costs can be just as important as well. So perhaps one of the biggest arguments in favor of investing additional time and resources into social media is that it can actually save companies money by streamlining customer relations and improving retention. The reason for this is that once companies have a way of communicating with potential and existing customers directly, they can respond more favorably to requests and issues, improving service while spending less money on customer relations and support.

By: Tom Magliery – CC BY-NC-SA 2.0

Even though brand visibility is the most important metric for measuring long-term growth, in the short-term companies are more interested in the additional money earned and saved due to their social media efforts. Tracking sales growth and costs of operating the business from one quarter to the next is the easiest way to measure this. As a matter of fact, it is important not to over rely on social media features as a way of measuring success. While likes and followers are certainly important, for example, these are what experts refer to as soft metrics, meaning that by themselves they don’t translate into additional profit for an enterprise.

Step 4: Employing Content Strategies Going Forward

Once the company has an established presence on one or more of the social media platforms, management will want to continue building customer relationships over time. In order to do this, the business must provide something of value to both potential and existing customers in order to keep them coming back for more. While coupons and other discounts are certainly good incentives, the content should also be mixed to include resourceful materials such as tutorials, third-party reviews, and industry tips. Interactive content such as drawings, polls, and promotional codes will also help to maintain customer engagement. The point of all of this is to provide an audience with rich, relevant content which will keep them checking back from time to time for updates on Facebook and Twitter.

The dynamics of social media are fickle. While it may at first seem easy to sign up at a few social networking sites and develop customer relationships, one quickly learns that there is a challenge in not only building contacts through Facebook and other popular platforms, but also maintaining them by offering valuable content which the user will appreciate. Even when that is accomplished, then the company must go the extra step of analyzing the traffic from these sources in order to provide a clearer picture of just how profitable a current social media strategy is for the business. So it isn’t an easy thing or something which can be accomplished in just a few minutes each week. A social media strategy takes dedication, innovative ideas, and a little luck in order to grow and be fruitful. Nevertheless, it can also be very rewarding financially for all enterprises big or small. That is why so many businesses continue to pursue these strategies; because they add to the bottom line while effectively building the brand.

While some people might have previously shied away, it’s clear that social media is here to stay both as a pastime and a career field.

While some people might have previously shied away from it out of a fear that it would be a short-lived phase, it’s clear that social media is here to stay both as a pastime and a career field.

Thus, for those with good personalities and communications skills it can be a fun and rewarding line of work that plays to their strong suits. There are other important characteristics needed, though.

Best Skills to Develop to Work in Social Media

By: London College of Fashion short courses – CC BY-NC-SA 2.0

It is important to be a quick learner and somebody who enjoys learning, as things are always changing in social media. Right now, Pinterest is a rapidly growing social media platform that wasn’t even on the radar a couple of years ago. Who knows if it will be as big in a few years as it is now?

While Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn appear to be here to stay, an important part of the job for anyone working in social media is to be learning about new options and figuring out where the future lies in social media.

In addition, it’s important to have strong writing skills and be able to express ideas in clear, concise sentences. Even if you aren’t limited by Twitter’s 140-character limit on other platforms, people’s attention span is short with any form of social media. That means you need to hook them in quickly and get to the point.

You should also develop a bit of knowledge about Internet security, including best practices for account usage, such as utilizing a VPN service.

Manage Your Own Online Presence Well

This is important for any job, but it is paramount if you are attempting to start a career in social media. If you can’t keep a strong, positive presence with your own social media accounts, how can you possibly be trusted to handle those of a company?

Not only should you have a presence on a variety of social media websites, but you should also demonstrate an ability to update them often and screen your content well. While you do wan to have a variety of presences, don’t overdo it either. If a site isn’t important enough that you would recommend a company using it, it won’t be all that impressive that you’re using it.

Overview

Remember that it’s not all about fun messages on Twitter and Facebook and try to focus in on the strategic side of social media as well. In addition, consider whether it is better for you to seek work with a company or start your own and consult for multiple small businesses.
