On Wed., Oct. 8th, the Nueva Onda Movie Nights is bringing you a sneak preview of the Austin Asian-American Film Festival! Thanks to our insider connections, we've secured these gems for your viewing pleasure, and we're topping it with another episode of Austin Stories. This'll be our last NOMN of the year, so come out before 2008 wraps!

We'll be showing:

EAT - We'll be screening two films from this impressive and gorgeous omnibus of shorts. "Laura" is a terribly black comedy about a wealthy couple and their nosy neighbor, and "Set B" is a wry look at bored fast-food employees and their patrons. Los Angeles Asian Film Festival, San Diego Asian Film Festival.

THE PAIN WITH BEING THIRSTY - A surprising mixed-media documentary featuring rare images of Japanese internment camps juxtaposed with a letter from... well, we won't spoil it, but pay close attention to what you hear.

INTERVAL - After the accidental death of her son, a businesswoman travels back in time to set things right. A thoughtful and haunting short from a former cinematography teacher and world traveler that says volumes in six minutes. Official selection, Sedona International Film Festival; nominee, Kodak Excellence in Filmmaking Award.

AUSTIN STORIES, EPISODE 9 - "CHICKS WITH DISCS" - If the Seinfeld crew lost their shirts and one major character, they'd be the East Coast version of MTV's legendary "Austin Stories." This critical and ratings hit captures the refreshing zeitgeist of our town circa '97, and you can't buy it or see it anywhere else. This time Howard woos a disc-golf-sharking cutie and Laura must outwit her evil boss - and his dead cat.

Join us on Tuesday, September 30 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30p.m. for the exhibit and presentation LBJ White House China by Sarah Philips at the Twin Oaks Branch of the Austin Public Library 2301 S. Congress #7. Philips will display and discuss the china used at the White House during Lyndon Baines Johnson’s Presidency. Philips is a retired educator and resident of Austin who has been a volunteer at the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum since 1982. This event is free and open to the public. About the Twin Oaks Branch The Twin Oaks Branch opened on September 27, 1956 at 202 East Oltorf Street in a neighborhood shopping mall just east of South Congress Avenue. The little 300 square-foot facility was the first of a series of “shopping mall’ branches launched by the Austin Public Library to make its services more accessible to the community. The branch has moved three times since it first opened, but interestingly enough, these moves have all taken place within the same shopping center! The branch is slated to move one more time. In the 1998 City of Austin Bond Election, voters approved the funds to acquire the necessary land to design and construct a 10,000 square foot replacement facility for the present 5,360 square foot lease space Twin Oaks Branch. By July 1, 2004, the City of Austin had successfully purchased the former South Austin Post Office at 1800 South Fifth Street to serve as the new site of the Twin Oaks Branch Library. Hatch Partnership Architects are the contractors to design this important replacement project. The current schedule calls for the Design Development Phase to be completed by September 15, 2006, with completion of the Construction Document Phase to follow on February 5, 2007. At this time, the date targeted for the Grand Opening Saturday, February 7, 2009.

Twin Oaks has always served a diverse, multi-ethnic community. Today, more than one-third of the surrounding community is Hispanic and many of the branch’s patrons speak Spanish as their primary language. There are six elementary schools in the Twin Oaks area, as well as two middle schools and one high school. As a result, the branch’s collections and services are closely geared toward the interest of young people. Twin Oaks also acts as an educational resource for area students from St. Edward’s University, the Texas School for the Deaf, and the Southern Careers Institute.

Nueva Onda Movie Nights presents PEOPLE POWER, Wed., Sept 10th!

On Wed., Sept. 10th, the Nueva Onda Movie Nights is bringing you PEOPLE POWER: three selections about community, passion, and empowerment. And, well, the failure of community, in the case of Austin Stories.

We'll be showing:

AUSTIN STORIES, EPISODE 8 - "ROAD TRIP" - If the Seinfeld crew lost their shirts and one major character, they'd be the East Coast version of MTV's legendary "Austin Stories." This critical and ratings hit captures the refreshing zeitgeist of our town circa '97, and you can't buy it or see it anywhere else. This time the crew piles into two cars to go tubing, but things go horribly wrong. Will the Weekly staffers eat each other alive? And Chip's on the rebound, kind of... is he capable of connecting with Howard's childhood friend Niva?

BULLETS IN THE HOOD - We've been having a lot of fun in recent movie nights, but this time we're bringing you something meaty, something you true film lovers will recognize as important work, by the youngest filmmakers ever to be tapped by Sundance. "Bullets" isn't just about the public face of gang violence. This story is told by a neighborhood teen who can take us behind the hard facades and the news stories to the revealing truths.

Seven of Terrence Fisher's friends were shot and killed in the infamous neighborhood of Bed-Stuy in Brooklyn. Terrence is not a gang member or a drug dealer; he's just a normal teenager likes making hip-hop with his friends and happens to live in the projects. What could Terrence do to stop gun violence before losing another friend, or his own life? Terrence and a fellow teen filmmaker picked up a camera to tell the story about gun violence in Bed-Stuy.

Bullets in the Hood not only went to Sundance, but was also chosen as the centerpiece of an anti-gun violence tour which attracted young audiences by the hundreds for "town meetings" at schools, libraries, and youth group gatherings.

EAST AUSTIN STORIES: HOLLY - When the Holly power plant was built in the 1960s, no one in the city government cared that it was being located in a residential neighborhood in the heart of Mexican-American East Austin. In 2001, an accident at the plant reminded the city that the danger was still real, and raised the buried questions of environmental racism to the surface. A short documentary created as part of UT film prof Andy Garrison's East Austin Stories project by Matt Drenik, Kevin Terrill and Apolinar "P.J." Garza.
