Session/Import Wizard
The new Session/Import Page Wizard allows you to easily enter your students practice test scores and generate a diagnostic report within minutes. Some of the features of the new Session/Import Wizard includes:

• Importing student data from one page in a smooth guided process (you won’t have to add the student from member page any more)
• Adding a newly released exam or test to your group easily
• The ability to assign the center specific student id

In the past there were 3 steps involved in entering data if you were using the bubblesheet based data entry. Now selecting the exam, test, and entering responses for a new or current student is all available from 1 page.

Exam Mapping
We frequently add new exams or versions of practice tests to our library. Previously if you wanted one attached to your group you would need to call and ask us to add it for you. Now you can map an exam or test to your groups on your own as soon as it is available using our new exam mapping feature.

Other Updated
We also made some other fixes which include:

• Capturing of Student Id’s
• Sorting and Searching for Students
• Online Custom payments

We’re pretty sure you are aware of our old start page below. To put it mildly it needed a bit of a face lift. But it also needed to be more useful. We wanted to create something that made the use of Socrato simpler and easier for customers to get to key parts of the application quickly.

So, behold our new start page. We have given the start page a complete makeover giving it a light and fresh feel. The cleaner start page breaks quick links in various buckets, allowing you to swiftly manage your account, groups or generate a diagnostic report. Over the coming months we will continue to hone this so it is most useful for you. Feedback would be greatly appreciated!

The Socrato Team is happy to announce that the ability to create diagnostic reports for Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) tests. Tutors assisting students in preparing for the SSAT can use our learning analytics software to generate SSAT test diagnostic reports which identify the students weaknesses on the test.

The SSAT is a test administered by the Secondary School Admission Test board (SSATB) for students grade 5-11 seeking admission to independents schools worldwide. The SSAT measures a students academic abilities by testing their verbal, quantitative and reading comprehension skills. The SSAT is broken up into two testing levels based on grade:

• Lower Level – for students currently in grades 5-7
• Upper Level – for students currently in grades 8-11

The SSAT also serves as a method for predicting SAT scores for students currently in grades 7-10. Taking the SSAT serves not only as an exercise for the SAT, but also provides information on a students educational strengths and weaknesses.

The new header is streamlined to reduce clutter as well as modernize the application. In 2010 we are seeing apps with less emphasis on brand and using the streamline bar look more judiciously. The trimmer design also allows you to see more of the application body above the fold so you can take in as much information as possible at a glance.

We’ve maintained the search box, a highlight of your credit balance, a swift means to contact us and your user-id. We also provided some quick links for you to access under your clickable-login username allowing you to logout, update your settings or browse for more Socrato help as you can see below.

The top navigation bar has been cleaned up and all the sub navigation items have been moved completely to the left of the page where it is easy to see and simple to use. The new sleek design will help you get around and find what you need quickly.

In order to reduce clutter on the page we’ve collapsed or long list of items into relevant sections which open when clicked. We’ve also added relevant icons that will help make using the sub-navigation more intuitive.

Lastly we’ve ensured that our breadcrumb navigation at the top of the page body is consistent throughout the application which consistently tells users where they are in the app and allows them to backtrack their path through the site.

If you didn’t think bubblesheet grading was easy enough, we just took it to the next level; bubblesheet scanning! Socrato now has the technology to scan our own paper bubblesheets and grade them instantly, making your life a whole lot easier. We even compile all of the data into one simple file.

With the launch of this service we can provide scanning for any of our supported ACT practice exams. We will be adding support for the SAT practice exams and other custom exams such as SAT vs. ACT in the coming weeks. So please stay tuned!

How does it work?

It is so easy! Just download one of our free exam bubblesheet templates and print out the number of copies you need. Once your students have taken the test and filled their answers onto the bubblesheet choose one of the “no sweat” options below.

Option 1: We’ll do it all for you!

Kick back, relax and let us do all of the work. Just mail us the bubblesheets via USPS or FedEx and we’ll take care of everything for you. We’ll scan and process the bubblesheets and email you a digital file with all your student responses. It only costs $1.00 per bubblesheet, with a minimum order of $50 (plus the cost of mailing the sheets back to you). There is a quick 3 business day turn around time for processing once we receive your package. This means you can have 100s of bubblesheets graded and back in your hand before meeting with your students again, all without lifting a finger! If you are a Socrato software user, your data will be available in your account so you can generate some of our nifty diagnostic reports.

Option 2: You scan, We Grade.

If you’re more of a “Do-It-Yourself” kind of person or you are simply running on a shorter time-line, then this is the option for you! Simply use your regular home or office scanner to scan the bubblesheets into PDF format. Once your PDF is ready, email it to us at info@socrato.com and we’ll process the bubblesheets for you within 3 business days. This option only costs you $0.50 per sheet (with a minimum order of $25). We will email you back your student responses by question as a digital file, or, if you are a Socrato paying customer all of the student data can be made available to you in you Socrato account online so you can generate performance and scoring reports!

So, why would I want my bubblesheets scanned anyway?

It’s simple! It saves you lots of time and money click here for more. The hours you would have spent grading each individual test can now be used for more tutoring sessions. While we process your test for you, you can be working with other students. More importantly it allows you to grade a lot of student answer sheets in bulk!

Please note that the actual test questions are the copyright material of the publishing organizations and Socrato does not distribute the test questions directly or on-behalf of other organizations. So what was the goal behind our new design?

Why the New Look?

There were several goals behind our redesign.  First off, we wanted a more professional-looking homepage that represented who we are and all of our offerings. Secondly, we wanted to improve the site user experience for our customers and end users. We were able to consolidate all of our site content under a single navigational structure and separate it from the Socrato app making it a lot easier to find what you are looking for.

And lastly, we wanted to separate our company news from the Socrato Learning Intelligence blog. We recognized that a lot of our blog subscribers were more interested in our helpful, educational information rather than hearing about our company and now they can subscribe to both feeds independently.

• In certain situation during Online Take Test (especially for ACT tests), the answer choices were not showing up properly, that issue has been resolved.
• While printing tests and bubblesheets from library, question content was not printed correctly. This issue was impacting ACT tests and questions with images. This issue has been fixed.

Additional SAT tests rolled out –

• We now offer Scoring and Performance Reporting for additional SAT tests and custom SAT tests. These tests are in addition to one which are available from the Official SAT Guide. Please drop us an email if you want access to these.

• Ability to configure custom branding for Scoring and Performance Reports
  • Customers can now upload their logo, choose a color scheme, and create their own custom branded reports. This feature will be accessible to customers by request only.
• “Section Reports” (Mini Reports) for ACT and SAT tests
  • We incorporated a number of backend changes in the Scoring and Performance Reporting module. This will allow us to roll out “Mini Reports” in near future. Now, if a student practices only a single section of an ACT or SAT test, they can generate a “mini report” with the same level of detail and insight as our full report; we even provide a projected scaled score.
    • For example, an ACT test student can practice only the science section, and will be able to generate detailed scoring and performance analysis report for just that section. Stay tuned for more details on this in a future post, or contact us if you’d like to be an early adopter like it.
• Coming Soon: Additional tests for SAT and ACT
  • Soon we will be announcing support for released/retired ACT and SAT published tests (not in the books), as well as support for custom tests. Due to many customer requests, we’re attempting to support as many of the released SAT and ACT tests as we can. Let us know if you’re interested in being notified when these get released, or if there are specific test versions you’re seeking.

As always we have tested as much as possible, but there is always a possibility that you may encounter issues. If you see something that needs our attention please reach out to us.

Not a huge release, number of minor fixes and enhancements in SAT/ACT custom diagnostic reports area.

• An issue related to the recalculation of the scores for SAT, ACT, and SAT/ACT comparison reports has been resolved. After uploading the session in bulk mode… if the user edits the session again online, the updated session was not scored correctly. The issue was introduced recently due to fixes to one of the custom reports.
• In order to do the billing we track the number of student sessions and the report generation activity. Many times due to user data entry error, or for other reasons, tutors needed to completely delete the session and reload data which recreated the new student session. Now the deleting of the session is tracked, so there is fully reconcilable audit trail of usage and billing.
• A few weeks back we discovered that during heavy load, the report usage activity was not getting tracked properly. No information was lost, but we needed to calculate the usage at the end of month, rather in real time. We have fixed the issue.
• Modified the ACT/SAT comparison test diagnostic report (this is applicable to custom tests) which now does the correlation of two scores (the SAT and ACT) and also makes the recommendation about what test to take.

Students and tutors who use traditional books, paper / pencil to practice and prepare for the ACT exam can now get the best of two worlds. Work with traditional printed books like Real ACT Test Prep Guide to practice and fill out the bubble sheets on paper; and use Socrato’s ACT Diagnostic Assessment Service to create the best ACT diagnostic analysis.

After paper based practice, in a few clicks tutors or students can enter student test practice responses (bubble sheet data) into Socrato using one of our convenient data entry options: directly enter as bubble sheet (student or tutor), enter in bulk mode, or load files automatically generated via a bubble sheet scanner.

Once done, within seconds the Socrato online service does the grading, scaling, scoring and detailed analysis. This service takes our previous work on our Free ACT test analysis and scoring tool further. We received many requests for a feature that makes it easy for tutors to enter student session data in Socrato where the incorrect responses are not marked on the bubble sheet. Tutors want to avoid populating an excel file for all questions manually when they don’t have scanners – 171 question for SAT and 216 question for ACT.

Based on this feedback we created a new student session data entry mode.  The “Take Test for Student” mode works well if when a tutor does not want to manually review and mark the incorrect questions before hand. Tutors and teachers can also use this feature to “tee up” a test for a specific student without having an actual student account.  This feature is now available on “Groups => Sessions => Enter or Import Scores” page. To use this mode please follow these steps:

• Add student
  • Make sure the student already exists in your member list. If not, go to “Groups => Members => Add/Invite member” and add the student
• Prepare Session
  • Go to the “Groups => Sessions => Enter or Import Scores” page
  • Select Test
  • Enter session date, comment, and tag
  • Under “Enter Results Manually” click on “Take Test for Member”
  • Find student (if not found, go to step “Add Student”)
  • For selected student click on “Take test for member”
• Enter Student Session Data
  • On Take Test page – Select “Bubble sheet mode”, select “Questions by section”
  • Optionally enter “pre-test score survey”
  • Enter all response in bubble sheet
  • Complete test
  • Optionally enter “post-test score survey”
• Enter Essay Score
  • On the Results page click on the “Review” button
  • Go the essay question and enter the score by clicking on “Assign Points”
  • Click Quit
• Generate SAT or ACT Diagnostic Analysis Report
  • Go in you “Groups => Reports => Diagnostic Reports”
  • Select the student and generate report

We have been using this for a while with a few customers with positive feedback.

The entire scoring and scaling process is scattered across 13 pages for each test in the official guide. If you step back, and look at the entire process of scoring the ACT, it reminds me of filling out an annual tax return.

While you wait for us to incorporate the ACT into Socrato as a simple, efficient, and more effective tool, we thought we’d provide a barebones excel tool in the meantime.

This simple spreadsheet “ACT Scoring Tool” does not reduce the effort by much (as you still have to do the majority of manual lookups and calculations) but it does add value. The spreadsheet tool

• Simplifies the process of capturing the data. All calculations and results are captured on 1 page – instead of 7.
• Does some of the calculations and validations (in your manual worksheet process there is no way to know if you missed the questions in your count)
• Does some interesting and baseline analysis – e.g. What is the point impact of each wrong / missed question
• Makes data visual by automatically generating graphs

Since we’re in the midst of incorporating the ACT into Socrato, please send along any suggestions and feature requests.  Our ultimate vision is to create the best diagnostic analysis for the ACT.  To see how the process will work, watch the Socrato Overview video. Teachers and tutors can leverage any state standardized test material, or even National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) material. After each assessment, NAEP releases dozens of sample questions to the public—more than 2,000 questions are currently available to be used in classrooms, as homework, or for assessments. These questions are of high quality and additional details are tagged to each item, such as subject classification, difficulty, and performance on the question by region and various demographics.

While working with teachers we repeatedly hear how they print the questions from these websites; then they go through a tedious process of cut-and-paste to create custom assessments and worksheets for specific subject areas. This inspired us to create the QuestionCart tool in Socrato.  The QuestionCart allows teachers (and anyone else) to search questions for MCAS and other exams by grade, question type, state standards, and other options.  Teachers can then add the questions to a QuestionCart similar to a shopping cart experience on other websites.  Once the question cart is populated, a teacher can click a button to convert those questions into an assessment test or printable worksheet with one click. No more cut and paste!

Major updates were done in learning analytic and reporting area. Key high lights include:

• Teachers or tutors can create custom reports for group of students.
• Assessment data can be analyzed by teacher defined parameters and criteria this hyperlink. Example, school staff can look at the performance of a class by race, gender, lunch code or any other parameters they wish to define. This is already providing interesting insights to our current users.
• Learning data analytics is very tightly connected with learning content. Teacher can assemble relevant learning content just by clicking on the standards link in various reports.
• Question distribution report now shows the list of students for each response. 

In addition, number of bug fixes were made and usability issue where resolved.

User Interface

• More content  – In addition to grade 3 – 5 MCAS material, more content was added for grades 6 and 7.
• Easier access to content – Question search by grade level.
• Improved reporting – The Question distribution report now shows students’ points-data for open response questions.
• More stable upload of students’ assessment data.
• Fixed a number of issues for students TIA and roster data upload process. (e.g., information for one question was captured incorrectly and the session ID was getting lost).
• Fixed a number of other bugs.

Under the Hood

• Faster performance for take test area – With a number of schools now using Scorato in their school computer labs, we needed to make improvements so the system does not slow down. We made a good number of changes to how the take test is managed in the system. This will allow our servers to support a larger number of concurrent users.
• More stable and faster reports generation – We have completely revamped how the PDF files are generated for SAT diagnostic reports. With this change, the time required for report generation has dropped significantly. The current load calculation shows that the first report is available in about 10 -15 seconds, and subsequent reports are created in less than 5 seconds. These are complex reports, so this improvement constitutes a significant improvement compared the previous time lapse required to generate the reports. Pretty cool!

Looking Forward

New and improved key features which are currently works in progress include:

• Additional reports which will allow teachers and principals to slice and dice their school’s and students’ data. They will be able to leverage these reports for instruction planning. This will allow them to automatically create custom and personalized assignments from Scorato. We are very excited about this.
• Making the delivery (printing and emailing) of all reports easier.

Teachers who are tired of “cut and paste” can now go directly to our MCAS Question Search page, select the grade, select the strand standard, and we’ll provide a shopping list of questions fom which you can choose. If there are passages included, you can look at the passage detail with one click. Select the questions you like, put them in your QuestionCart, and create your own test. Print it for class assignments or assign it to students to practice online.

Issue Resolved

Increased testing effort on Safari browser
We have increased testing efforts on the Safari browser. We are finding a few issues and are making fixes to improve Socrato on Safari. There are certain issues, specifically “frozen” screens or dropdown selectors which are not working,  which we are hearing from you but we are not able to reproduce in our testing.

• Please let us know if you are having these issues so we can learn more about how to reproduce the problems.

Improved performance for assessment result upload with progress bar
A couple of you mentioned having issues with machine freezing while uploading of student scores. And refreshing of page was resulting in double data entry of the scores.

• Now when you do result upload, a progress indicator will appear to show the system is processing the student scores. In addition we have number of hidden changes which will eliminate duplicate upload.

Ability to delete or update previously uploaded session results
People were having difficulty in deleting or modifying the uploaded user data that was loaded in error

• We made it easy to edit and delete the entire upload if you uploaded the wrong data. There is a ‘Delete All’ button on Edit sessions page, or you can delete results student by student.
• In session list drop down there is a unique identifier (timestamp) for all your uploads that indicates when it was uploaded

Updated scoring calculation for Open Response question
The system was treating any data entry in open response question as correct, including a score of zero.

• Now if you assign points (greater than 0) to a question it will be marked as correct, while zero will be marked incorrect (instead of correct). All empty score will be considered as ungraded.
• In future we are considering adding the concept of partially correct. Let us know you would find this helpful.

Question Distribution report now shows Open Response Questions

• In the Question Distribution report you will get to see the open response and short description questions as part of report. Currently we are not proving the score distribution (it’s on high priority list)

Temporary workaround for Printing large passages (more work in progress – see below)
Few users are having issues printing large passage. It shows correctly on the computer screen but prints only partial information from certain browsers. We are able to reproduce the issue and have a temporary workaround.

• For long ELA passages current workaround is to print on Safari. It’s not perfect but does the job.
• To make global fix we will have to cut the passage images in smaller chunks to fit page size. It will take time because there are 143 passages. Please let us know any passage you want expedited and we will fix those first. We apologize about this oversight.

Printing Icon does not do anything on IE
In Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) when a user clicks on the print button, nothing happens and they get a javascript error.

• We are able to reproduce the issue on IE. We believe it is because the pop-up blocker is turned on. The fix for this is to either temporarily disable the pop-up blocker or add www.socrato.com to your “allow pop-up from this site” list.
• You can do that by going to Tools à pop-up blocker à turn off pop-up blocker

Please give us call if you want us to walk you through.

Some other changes have been done as well, including a lot more help has been added at places. Please let us know if there are particular places that are confusing and we will add more help in those areas as well.

Open Issues on Hot List

• Show some type of “Grouping Indicator” for question from same passage on Search Question page and Question List
• Large passage text not printing completely on paper, where as it is available online.
  • This will require few days of effort. If you have request for particular content set please let us know. We will fix those first.
• In certain circumstances the test heading and description are interchanging (showing incorrectly) on Test List page
  • We have seen this once, but never after that. If you are seeing this we would be very grateful if you contacted us so we can learn how to reproduce it.
• Printing issue – keeping questions and answers together on same page
  • We are looking onto this and it may take some time
• Content upload made easy – Questions upload for various types of questions from outside to Socrato. We have work in progress which will make this very easy. Please stay tuned.

New release streamlines MCAS Summative Evaluation and Formative Evaluation.

Thank you all for your patience, support, and feedback. We are pleased to share a few more updates to Socrato which we believe will make life bit easier.

Uploading of <a href="http://www buy generic strattera.socrato.com/”>MCAS Test Results / Assessment Test Results is a lot smoother along with the real time reports

The issue of similar Test Names was causing confusion.

• That issue has been fixed. Pretty much all Test List pages now show a unique Test identifier (the Test Id #)
• On Enter Results page while selecting the Test for uploading results, the Test Id # and the description are shown in the selection box
• As soon as your test results are uploaded on the summary page you can click on the link for the Question Distribution report. A very revealing and helpful graphical reports shows up (my favorite report, and a recommendation from Sharon – thank you!)

Search MCAS Questions – Getting better, plus no more clicking to see question images.

There were few issues like ‘click here to see image’, or look into your printout to understand what taxonomy 7.D.3 means? Those issues are resolved.

• On ‘Search Question’ page the taxonomy description is available right in the search dropdown
• If the question search result has questions with images, you have an option to see the image right there (an option box to Show image). This fix is also available on ‘Question Preview’ page as well when you are creating / editing any custom test

 Create Custom Tests and Edit them any time.

The fix was requested to be able to modify the Test title and description as they were causing confusion

• Test Editing is now available for every one. If you have created the Test, you can edit the Test any time. Change the title, description, tags etc. You can even add or remove questions any time

If you are the creator of the Test you will see an Edit button.

 Cancelled or Rejected members are eliminated from process

Earlier the canceled/rejected group members (students) where showing up in the Enter Results, Attendance and other group screens.

• The attendance sheet does not show any cancelled members
• The Enter Results page also eliminates them
• They have also been removed from all group reports
• You can see which members are canceled/rejected on the Member List

 Invite your Students to join Socrato

• If your students are using Socrato un-officially, give them the registration code for your group. Invite and encourage them to join the group. When they do the practice in Socrato on their own you can track their efforts and get the Formative Assessment and other reports for no effort. Try it out!!

 Other Updates

• Number of other issue were resolved, as well few content changes were made to eliminate errors
• We also improved the performance of the group “home” page

 We are aware of a number of outstanding requests and issues. A number of improvements are already underway. We will love to hear from you, and get your feedback so we can prioritize the issues which are most important to all of us.

With this release Socrato also welcomes all new teachers supporting summer MCAS tutoring.

It’s inspiring to see how much effort, energy, and dedication goes in to help at-risk kids. We feel proud to be part of program, and we hope our efforts are making a difference for the teachers and students.

The focus of this release was to start supporting tutoring centers, schools, and classroom instructors by providing real time analysis and recommendations about student learning to teachers and students. In addition, we added about 1,100 more questions to the “question bank” to support MCAS test preparation. Key highlights are as follows.

• Search our large question bank by curriculum strands and standards, and create your own custom tests to print for students or assign to them online 
  • Share your test with other teachers.
  • Have your students take the tests on-line on Socrato, or off-line with printed quizzes.
  • The questions are mapped to the state curriculum, so you can quickly report on student and class performance according to the DOE standards.
• Vastly enhanced Group area
  • In addition to creating a simple group to collaborate, large or complex organizations like tutoring center, schools, districts or training organizations are supported. Groups are built to support easy sharing of test materials, and also provide reporting and detailed analysis at different levels of the group structure.
    
• Timesheet and attendance for group members
  • This feature was added based on the request from our key users. It allows full tracking of timesheet for instructor and electronic attendance submission for students. The time and attendance sheets are supported via user-configurable workflow for approval and processing.
• Assignments and sharable content libraries
  • Any content can be associated with groups along with comment for assignment and communication. Content can also be shared across multiple groups by putting leveraging the hierarchical group structure.
• Ability to load past MCAS TIA’s (Test Item Analysis Report) & Assignment Results
  • Teachers can upload data and run analysis for a group of students
• Exhaustive analysis and reporting
  • Students and Teachers can get real time analysis of their students and class. Example report are question response analysis, trends by students, trends by subject areas over time, and more.
• Sizable question bank
  • In addition a significant amount of content has been added into the question bank to support the full usage of all features.

Highlights of changes in the latest release:

Better access to Content

Users can upload and share their own content 

Users can upload any type of content directly to Socrato. They can keep the content private, share it with their friends and colleagues, or with the rest of the world. For example, content can be old exam papers, answer sheets in document format or even individual questions and answers.

Better search and browsing

Users can find content using various criteria including: recently created, most popular, search by category or guided navigation. Users can also mark any content as personal favorites and enjoy quick access to favorites in the ‘My Stuff’ area.

Practice

Based on feedback we have received, we simplified the Session Start page. Users will still have access to a few of the additional settings during Take Test. Let us know what you think.

Groups and Collaboration

This is a brand new feature. Anyone can create groups. A group can be a study group managed by students, tutor groups, or a classroom group. The creator of the group can decide whether to keep the group private, protected or make it public. Groups allow users to work on–and report on–a common set of tests.

Reports & Analysis

There are new reports available which allow users to assess their strengths and weaknesses by curriculum subject strands. These are now available for MCAS 6, practice tests.
