Yet, there exists a world where hops and barley command prices that rival the finest champagnes. From brews made with Antarctic ice to those aged in space-traveled barrels, the craft beer scene has produced some truly extraordinary—and extraordinarily priced—beverages.

According to many folk tails and myths beer is a gift from gods. Though these beers are man-made, their price might lead you to think that they were created by divine power. Which are the most expensive beers in the world?

Out of Competition Choice: BrewDog’s The End of History

BrewDog’s The End of History is a legendary beer that redefines the boundaries of craft brewing. Released in 2010, this beer immediately made headlines for its extraordinary features and provocative presentation.

Unprecedented Strength

With an ABV of 55%, The End of History is one of the strongest beers ever made. Achieving this high alcohol content through freeze distillation, where the beer is repeatedly frozen and the ice removed, results in a potent beverage with complex, concentrated flavors. This Belgian-style ale incorporates juniper berries and nettles from the Scottish Highlands, adding herbal and botanical notes to its robust malt profile

Unique and Controversial Packaging

The most striking aspect of The End of History is its packaging. Each of the 12 bottles produced is encased in a taxidermied animal, such as squirrels and stoats, which were ethically sourced. This choice of packaging sparked significant controversy and discussion, reflecting BrewDog’s penchant for provocative marketing.

Rarity and Collectibility

With only 12 bottles ever made and priced at around $20,000 each, The End of History is incredibly rare and highly sought after by collectors. The beer’s extreme rarity and the novelty of its presentation make it a unique piece of brewing history

Cultural Impact

The End of History has pushed the boundaries of what beer can be, inspiring other brewers to explore new frontiers. Its high alcohol content, unique ingredients, and controversial packaging have left an indelible mark on the craft beer industry, showcasing BrewDog’s commitment to innovation and bold experimentation

The water used for this beer was sourced from melted Antarctic ice, collected by the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. The ice was flown from Antarctica to Tasmania, where it was melted, and then the water was transported to Perth for brewing. This extraordinary journey adds to the allure and price of the beer.

The beer boasts a clean and crisp flavor profile, reflecting the purity of its Antarctic water origin. The proceeds from the sales went to support the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, further enhancing its value and appeal. This beer is not just about taste; it’s about contributing to a noble cause while enjoying a truly unique brew.

Expert Opinions

Beer connoisseurs often appreciate the artistry and innovation that go into these brews. Similarly, the story behind Antarctic Nail Ale and its contribution to conservation efforts adds an ethical dimension to its value

Personal Experience

For those lucky enough to try these beers, the experience is as much about the journey and the story as it is about the flavor. Whether you’re in it for the taste, the prestige, or the sheer novelty, these beers offer a glimpse into the innovative and often extravagant world of craft brewing. So, next time you grab a six pack of the bottom shelf, remember that somewhere out there, a beer aficionado is savoring a $1,000 sip, and to them, it’s worth every penny.

After all, Plato’s “Republic” stands as one of the most intricately woven utopias of ancient philosophy.

Plato’s “Republic,” arguably his most renowned work, has persistently featured in countless academic syllabi crafted over the decades. Yet, the diverse interpretations it spawns remain strikingly nebulous. The gamut of biases and shifts influencing the acclaim of “Republic” intriguingly serves to bond us, fueling our curiosity to decipher the wisdom of one of antiquity’s greatest philosophers.

This, above all, propels us to dig deep into the core of this seminal work, a sphere far beyond the realm of political philosophy.

Plato’s dialogues are captivating invitations to participate, mostly in quests for eternal truths. A standout feature of Plato, setting him apart from his contemporaries, is the evasive nature of his ideas and philosophical musings – rarely are they explicit or systematized.

Rather, Plato’s thoughts are relayed via dialogues, following the Socratic method of inquiry and using literary vignettes where he narrates dialogues between two or more characters, yet he remains a silent observer. This narrative technique with multiple voices lends itself to interpretation, presenting an exciting conundrum.

In stark contrast, Marx’s oeuvre, placing him as the chief theoretician of socialist thought, offers a definitive resolution to the issue of the working class’s deplorable living conditions – a problem he and Engels squarely attributed to the bourgeoisie. Marx’s major works, laden with detailed analyses, were primarily aimed at finding ways to surmount various economic challenges. This crucial aspect is often overlooked or dismissed by many delving into the works of thinkers from millennia past.

Naturally, this suggests that studying Marx may be more accessible, given that we can evaluate the practical outcomes borne out in historically communist or socialist nations. Nonetheless, this should not deter us. As Descartes so wisely pointed out, the importance lies in assessing “that which is so clear and distinct to the mind that it can engender no doubt”.

Parallels and Divergences in Plato’s and Marx’s Political Ideologies

If the “Republic” is perceived as an embodiment of perfect harmony, where morality becomes integral to the political framework, Marx takes a decisive stand in favor of tangible, existing communism rather than an abstract possibility. This clear stance prompts Marx to champion radical shifts in eternal truths, religion, and morality, believing they must be uprooted because “the history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles,” morphing differently in varying epochs.

This vision distinguished Marx from his contemporaries, as he primarily focused on pragmatic solutions that would wrest capital from the bourgeoisie. The capital problem, that is, the proletariat’s subjugation by the bourgeoisie, is at the heart of the “Communist Manifesto,” revealing the first striking similarity between Marx and Plato.

In the opening book of “Republic,” primarily centered on justice, Cephalus contends that “wealth alone, without wisdom, could never make old age easier.” Within these initial pages, we encounter the sophist Thrasymachus, part of a cadre of itinerant scholars who lectured for money, a practice Plato and many of his philosophical peers regarded with contempt.

Socrates’s confrontation with Thrasymachus serves as an excellent precursor to the portrayal of ideal altruistic leadership. Despite an apparent elitist structure, those wielding power (the guardians) would need to dedicate themselves wholly to communal benefit, implying a necessary sacrifice of material possessions.

This renunciation also encompasses private property, a cornerstone of Marx’s most famous works. However, the topic of state hierarchy presents another substantial divergence between the two thinkers.

In “Republic,” Plato meticulously outlines a clear hierarchical state structure. Conversely, Marx, in his seminal work “Capital,” elucidates his vision of salvation through communal ownership, devoid of a specific hierarchy, for a nation’s progress.

In this extensive work, composed over 30 years, Marx enumerates compelling reasons why an economic system bolstering individuals cannot endure while authorities constantly favor capitalists amassing colossal fortunes, as workers descend deeper into destitution.

Yet, due to the clearly defined hierarchy in the “Republic,” private property would not apply universally. Plato permits private ownership for certain societal classes, given that it’s under state regulation. This sharply contrasts with Marx’s call for the total abolition of private property. The three classes of citizens within an ideal state would encompass the productive workers, the auxiliaries, and the rulers.

The productive workers, forming the population’s majority, encompass farmers, artisans, unskilled laborers, entrepreneurs, artists, contractors, service providers, and professionals in various vocations. Auxiliaries include military personnel and law enforcers. The relatively small ruling class comprises those best qualified to govern due to their wisdom, dedication, and integrity in serving and protecting the state’s best interests.

Addressing women’s roles in an ideally organized state reveals similarities between Marx and Plato. The “Communist Manifesto” dedicates a section to Marx and Engels’s aspiration for women’s improved status, including their views on marriage’s annulment, presenting it as one of the criticisms leveled against their political ideology by capitalists. Marx contends that only by unequivocally rejecting capitalism can women’s rights be enhanced.

On the other hand, “Republic” offers complex solutions when juxtaposed with contemporary feminist viewpoints, or even socialist feminism originating in the 19th century’s mid-1800s. Notably, women could serve as “guardians,” requiring the relinquishment of their private property, consequently leading to the marriage’s dissolution due to shared responsibility.

Moreover, rulers’ involvement in economic activities would detract from their duty to justice, or serve the people by maintaining a class-based social order. For Plato, family and property were the primary catalysts for discord and social tensions. In this light, Plato’s version of “communism” manifests as both ascetic and aristocratic.

Synthesizing the Confluence and Dissonance in the Philosophies of Plato and Marx

The temporal divide between the lives of these two philosophers in no way suggests their philosophies are an identical melange. Contrasting, analyzing, and incorporating prior research in interpreting their works is a pivotal marker of philosophical evolution.

In his seminal work “History of Western Philosophy,” Bertrand Russell intricately weaves Plato’s utopia with 19th-century nation-states and their governance, further underscoring this methodology’s significance. A unified interpretation of the founder of the Academy and the leading proponent of socialist thought is also critical in the maturation of political discourse. With the advantage of hindsight, the shortcomings in Plato and Marx’s philosophies have been subjected to vehement criticism.

Comparing them in this domain is challenging due to the eras in which they were conceived. For instance, it’s not difficult to fault Plato for a semblance of eugenics. Marx was cognizant of certain criticisms from the bourgeoisie towards his political ideology. However, the potential pitfalls of practically applying Marxism in particular countries were highlighted by numerous intellectuals, and Marx’s political vision considerably dwindled in popularity with the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

Nevertheless, following the victory of neoliberal capitalism, many activist movements have reignited interest in Marx’s radical ideologies.

This naturally leads to the question: Was Marx correct? While there isn’t a single definitive answer to this, statistics can provide insights into capitalism’s effect on contemporary society. A few years back, over 85% of the total wealth was held by a mere tenth of the global population.

Unquestionably, such a fact would have appalled Plato, given his aforementioned concept of the guardian’s role.

Does this automatically signify the imminent implosion of capitalism, as Marx might suggest? Not necessarily. Since the Industrial Revolution, and notably in the past three decades, over a billion people have improved their financial status, no longer residing in extreme poverty.

Jim Yong Kim, former World Bank president, opined that the poverty issue could be resolved by 2030, given an increase in investments to create jobs for those with the least purchasing power.

Thus, economic challenges continue to escalate, ensuring Marx’s ideas will remain pertinent, irrespective of capitalism’s dominance. Would a reversion to eternal truths and morality effect change? Could that facet of Plato’s utopia bring about sweeping transformations in the perception of the state or, more realistically, the global community? Certainly, even contemplating their breadth is what expands our philosophical horizons.

You’ve probably heard the beginning of the Communist Manifesto countless times, a work that is the ideological reading of many leftists. That work is also one of the most important political works of the 20th century because it influenced epochal changes in the world political scene a little more than a century ago. Let’s take a look at the very essence of this work, as well as see what impact it had on the entire political scene at the time it was created.

Marx and Engels contend that capitalism’s relentless pursuit of profit lays the groundwork for its demise. They claim that the bourgeoisie exploits the proletariat in its continuous pursuit of markets, leading to class strife. According to the Manifesto, the only way to end this war is for the proletariat to rise against the bourgeoisie and create a communist society devoid of class divisions. Large segments of society, especially the working class, found this critique and solution to be persuasive, spreading the seeds of revolutionary thought.

Regarding the critique of capitalism, Marx and Engels write, “The bourgeoisie, wherever it has got the upper hand, has put an end to all feudal, patriarchal, idyllic relations… It has pitilessly torn asunder the motley feudal ties that bound man to his ‘natural superiors,’ and has left remaining no other nexus between man and man than naked self-interest, than callous ‘cash payment’.” (Chapter 1: Bourgeois and Proletarians)

On the idea of a proletariat revolution and the establishment of a communist society, they state, “The proletariat will use its political supremacy to wrest, by degrees, all capital from the bourgeoisie, to centralize all instruments of production in the hands of the State… Of course, in the beginning, this cannot be effected except using despotic inroads on the rights of property, and on the conditions of bourgeois production…” (Chapter 2: Proletarians and Communists)

Lastly, the Manifesto’s vision of a future communist society is encapsulated in this famous quote: “In place of the old bourgeois society, with its classes and class antagonisms, we shall have an association in which the free development of each is the condition for the free development of all.” (Chapter 2: Proletarians and Communists)

It has been translated into countless languages and has inspired revolutions and political movements worldwide. Its principles underpinned the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia, the establishment of Communist China, and the rise of socialist states in Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The Manifesto’s ideas also found expression in labor movements, social policies, and political parties in non-communist countries. Its impact reverberated through the corridors of power, challenging established norms and systems.

Yet the influence of the Communist Manifesto extends beyond political movements and revolutions. It has left an indelible mark on academia, intellectual thought, and popular culture. The Marxist critique of capitalism has become a cornerstone of sociological analysis, inspiring myriad theoretical perspectives in the social sciences. Scholars across disciplines grapple with Marx’s concepts of class struggle, alienation, commodity fetishism, and the materialist conception of history. Furthermore, the Manifesto has influenced literature, cinema, art, and music, its themes seeping into the cultural fabric of societies around the globe.

However, the influence of the Communist Manifesto is not merely historical. In the 21st century, amidst growing economic inequality and social unrest, its critique of capitalism still resonates. The 2008 financial crisis, the Occupy Wall Street movement, and the resurgence of socialist ideas in mainstream political discourse – these phenomena have renewed interest in Marx and Engels’ seminal work. The Manifesto continues to inspire, provoke, and challenge, reflecting its enduring relevance.

The Communist Manifesto’s influence is thus rooted in its ideological potency, its historical resonance, its global reach, and its multi-dimensional impact. It embodies the spirit of an era, giving voice to the dispossessed and challenging the status quo. But more than a political tract, it is a mirror of society, reflecting its contradictions and conflicts. The Communist Manifesto is more than a document; it is a force, an idea, that continues to shape our world. The echo of Marx and Engels’ words continues to resonate, a testament to the enduring influence of the Communist Manifesto.

The Manifesto’s ideas reflected and contributed to defining the chaotic period in which it was written, therefore this was no coincidence.

Economic systems and social structures were substantially affected by the late 18th-century Industrial Revolution, which began in Britain and spread to the rest of Europe and North America in the 19th century. It introduced mechanical manufacturing methods, encouraged the expansion of industries, and significantly increased the productivity of society. But it also resulted in significant social disruption.

Many workers were uprooted from rural communities and traditional ways of life and thrown into new urban industrial environments. The working conditions at factories, which were frequently inhumane, were commonplace and included long hours, little pay, and dangerous situations. Child labor was widespread. The gap between the rich and the poor grew wider and more pronounced.

Due to this discrepancy, Marx and Engels identified class conflict as the main force behind historical progress.

Additionally, rising bourgeois classes and changing economic conditions were exerting increasing strain on the previous feudal structures and kingdoms. The Manifesto was drafted in 1848, a year in which upheavals against despotism took place in Germany, France, Italy, and other European countries. The beliefs backed by these upheavals were usually liberal and nationalist.

In this setting of social and political instability, Marx and Engels penned the Communist Manifesto, which offered a theoretical framework for comprehending the upheavals. They framed the struggles as part of a larger historical pattern of class warfare and saw the development of a communist society as the solution once the proletariat rose to power.

By capturing the frustrations of the proletariat and providing a radical vision for a different society, the Manifesto resonated with many people of the time. Its influence was not just a result of the potency of its ideas, but also the critical historical moment it emerged from. The Industrial Revolution and the wave of revolutions in 1848 provided fertile ground for the seeds of Marx and Engels’ ideas to take root and grow.

These smells are enough to send most of running in the opposite direction.

Each of us differs as to what we perceive as being the worst smells. While some of our smell preference may be innate others are learned by experience .When a group of Philadelphia scientists took on the task of developing a smell so bad it could be used for crowd control, they found great differences in how people perceived certain odors. This certainly makes their task of developing a universally repulsive odor somewhat of a challenge. Despite some individual differences, there are odors that are so bad that they meet most people criteria for extremely bad odors. Here are some of the worst smells in the world:

Skunk odor

This malodorous stench is widely regarded as one of the worst smells in the world, but even this potent smell has its own set of fans who find it to be “interesting”. In fact, there’s an entire group of skunk odor lovers out there who describe the odor of skunk as sweet perfume. Is there no accounting for taste?

Decaying flesh

This is a stench that most people find to be repulsive, maybe because it elicits thoughts of death. Many an investigator upon finding a dead and decaying body has been known to gag at the scene from the overwhelming odor. This particular odor can easily be classified as one of the world’s worst smells and you’re not going to have many people argue the point.

Vomit

This is another odor associated with the negative connotation of illness which may be why so many people find it to be offensive. It’s another pungent odor that can cause even a strong person to gag. Surprisingly, this gagging response to the smell of vomit could be adaptive. If someone within a group who vomits has eaten a bad piece of food, it would be adaptive that the other group members vomit to eliminate the toxin. Surprisingly enough, many people who abhor the smell of human vomit find animal vomit to be much less offensive.

Feces and urine odor

These are two odors that are commonly cited as being some of the worst smells in the world. Why does feces smell so badly? The bacteria that colonize feces are the real culprits. They break down the undigested food residue to create some very malodorous gases. The smell of feces can differ somewhat based on what foods you have eaten.

Decaying food

If you’ve ever opened a container left in the refrigerator for several weeks and opened the container, you’re familiar with this unappetizing stench. Again, we can blame the by products of bacteria on this one. Bacteria don’t seem to be very picky about what they choose to eat! Again, this can be classified as an adaptive response since it acts as a deterrent to eating food that could cause illness.

Isonitriles

You may not have smelled them, but they’ve been classified as the “world’s worst smell”. Persons who have been exposed to the smell of these chemicals have reportedly vomited at first whiff. The stench is so bad they’ve even been patented for use as nonlethal weapons. With a smell this potent and malodorous, it certainly makes it a challenge for those involved in their development and use.

You probably have your own list of what you consider to be the worst smells in the world, but chances are at least one of these repugnant smells made your list. It seems like, at least as far as smell goes, some things are universal.

Here is the list of the rich and the famous bachelors that dominates the world’s limelight.

Roustam Tariko – Russia

Roustam Tariko ($3.5 Billion) is one of the most successful self-made billionaires in Russia. While many profited from Russia’s state owned companies, Tariko set out to build his own fortunes. Starting in the 80s, Tariko was into helping Foreign tourists find hotel rooms in Moscow and in a few years was selling Italian vermouth. In 1998, he started his own Russian brand of vodka named the Russian Standard. And in 1999, with the help of another company, he made his own bank – the Russian Standard Bank. Now at the age of 46, this single father of 3 children knows how to party and cruise in style. His personal Boeing jet carries him to his summer home in Sardinia and he is a big money spender (spends as much as he earns). And his parties attract the best of Russia and have a certain reputation of craziness.

Prince Albert von Thurn und Taxis – Germany

Named as one of the youngest billionaires ($2.4 Billion) at the age of 8 and then returned to the Forbes list of billionaires at the age of 18 when he officially inherited his family fortune in 2001. Now at the age of 24, with no kids and still single, the prince lives in his pimped out castle in Germany with over 30,000 hectares of woodland as his backyard. He went to high school in Rome and studied economics and theology in Scotland. Currently he is not working and does not need to work, as his income comes from all the real estate, art, and companies he owns. He still lives with his mother and older sister at the family castle and tours Germany with a car race team.

Fahd Hariri – Lebanon

The youngest son of a family that is well entrenched in the Lebanese political system and a family of billionaires, Fahd Hariri at the age of 27 is price that is worth it for any gold diggers ($2.4 Billion). Son of Rafiq Hariri, the former Prime Minister of Lebanon who was assassinated in 2005 by suspected Syrian forces and brother of Saad Hariri who is the majority leader in Lebanese parliament and step brother of Bahaa and Aymin who are billionaires as his mother and sister is. He lives in Paris, France with hopes throughout Europe and Russia and runs small furniture and wares store in Paris. He is also a board member of Beirut’s Future Television network. Rise of Fahd and Hariri family after the assassination of Rafiq Hariri from 4.3 billion to 16.7 billion dollars in a year is still unexplained – nevertheless the family members are all on the Forbes list and control numerous companies from Houston to Europe to Saudi Arabia.

Charles Dunstone – U.K.

Known for being the best boss in UK, Charles Dunstone is a new self-made British billionaire ($1.8 Billion). At 44, he is still an able bachelor and is the chairman of his company – Carphone Warehouse (known outside UK as The Phone House). Starting his company from his apartment, it now has over 20,000 employees and 2,000 stores and made his fortune through his phone company. He is in talks with Best Buy in the US to expand his business into the states. His company was named as one of the best workplaces and all employees get the day off for their birthday with a personal cake being sent from Charles Dunstone himself. This guy is as nice as the billionaires get.

Mark Zuckerberg – U.S.A

At the age of 23 and known as the youngest billionaire on the planet ($1.5 billion), the tech geek founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, is one of the most eligible bachelors. Founding of his own company and social networking site known as Facebook, the Harvard drop-out made it to the big leagues from his humble beginnings in his dorm. With a little bit of help from Paypal cofounder Peter Thiel and a few other investments, today his site Facebook has over 70 million active users worldwide. Microsoft bought about 1.6% of Facebook shares for 240 million dollars – leading to the speculation that his company is worth 15 billion dollars.

Before people learned how beer was made its creation was attributed to divine power. Beer has long been associated with various gods in cultures throughout the history. Even today, in some parts of the world, beer is still considered a sacred drink.

In the ancient Sumerian, beer was said to be one of the four holy foods (along with wine, bread, and meat) and was consumed by the gods. In Egypt, beer was the drink of the gods and was said to have been created by the god Osiris. In ancient Greece, beer was created by the god Dionysus. In ancient Rome, beer was created by the god Vulcan. Beer was associated with the Roman god Bacchus. In medieval Europe, beer was associated with the goddesses Hera and Venus.

These are the 10 most famous beer gods:

1. Silenus

In Ancient Greek mythology, Silenus is the God of beer and a drinking companion. The name Silenus is derived from the Greek word “silen” meaning “drunk”. He is usually associated with his buddy, Dionysus. He is often featured as a bald and fat man, with a big beer belly. He is normally drunk and it is said that he had to be carried either by donkeys or satyrs (in Greek mythology, satyrs are wood-dwelling creatures with the head and body of a man and the ears, horns, and legs of a goat). He was the leader of a band of merry satyrs who danced and sang at the banquets of the god. He was said to have a very long beard and to have a huge belly. He was said to have a fondness for wine, women, and song.

2. Dionysus

Dionysus was the Greek god of wine, fertility, theatre, and ritual madness. He was the son of Zeus and the mortal Semele. He was the god of the grape harvest and was often associated with the grape vine, though he is considered the god of all intoxicating drinks. Dionysus was said to be a good-natured god who was in the company of satyrs, maenads, and nymphs. He was often depicted with a wine jar and a thyrsus. The thyrsus is a staff or stick with a vine or grape vine wrapped around it. It is a symbol of his godly power and the source of his godly madness.

Four times a year, the Athenians and citizens from all over Greece would gather together to worship Dionysus. The largest and most prolific of these festivals was the City Dionysia, or Great Dionysia, which was held in late March through early April. Here, the Greeks would sing and dance and revel in a state of madness in worship of the god. Goats were sacrificed in his honor. Men would dress up as satyrs. Large amounts of wine would be consumed.

3. Ninkasi

Ninkasi was an ancient Sumerian goddess of beer and brewing. Her name means “the beer-making god.” Ninkasi was one of the most important gods of the Sumerian pantheon. She was associated with many aspects of the brewing process. She was the goddess of the grain, the soil, brewing, and brewing-related activities.

“A Hymn to Ninkasi,” written in the third millennium BC, is an early Sumerian poem about the beer-making goddess Ninkasi. The hymn describes Ninkasi’s creation of beer and the role she plays in the creation of the Sumerian gods. It is an early example of a sacred poem and a kind of mythological allegory.

4. Osiris

While wine was the alcoholic beverage of choice for the Greeks and Romans, ancient Egyptians produced and consumed beer in huge volumes. According to the myth, the god Osiris himself gave humanity the gifts of culture and taught them the art of agriculture; at this same time, he also instructed them in the craft of brewing beer. A Greek historian from the time of Julius Caesar once wrote that, “Osiris taught the people how to brew the beverage which is made of barley, which is not greatly inferior to wine in odor and potency.”

5. Aegir

Aegir (Eye-Year) is not an actual god, but a Joton (Giant) in Norse mythology that ruled over the sea with his wife Ran and 9 daughters. He is also the brewer to the gods. In his great hall under the sea, he brewed the finest ale in all the 9 Realms. The ale had a magical quality that caused the ale to be drinkable even when it was frozen. This made Aegir a favorite among the gods, known to the gods as the host of great parties where the drinking horns would fill themselves. In his hall, the gods had to set aside their differences and remain peaceful or risk banishment from his hall forever.

6. Tezcatzontecatl

In the Aztec tradition, Tezcatzontecatl is the God of pulque (a traditional alcoholic beverage made of fermented juice of the century plant, and similar to beer). He is also associated with drunkenness and fertility. A monument built like a pyramid was built on top of the Tepozteco Mountain for the worshiper and now, this place has become a well known archaeological site.

She rules over rainbows, agriculture, harvests, rain, and beer and has power over water and earth. She taught Her people how to sow and reap and also taught them the art of making beer. It is this act that has made Her one of the more revered goddesses of the Zulu people.

Her statue portrays her as large-breasted female holding a beer ladle while dancing. Thus, the statue is often referred to as the “Beer-Dancer”. The symbol of Yasigi is the mask.

9. Radegast

He would often appear among common people in disguise to make merry. If he was satisfied with the hospitality shown to him, they were richly rewarded.

10. Raugupatis and Ragutiene

In Ancient Baltic and Slavic mythology, Raugupatis is known as the God of fermentation. Raugutiene is Raugupatis partner and she is known as the Goddess of beer.

For as long as history has been recorded, all around the world, we can see examples of these beverages being enjoyed and even fought over. Beer is mentioned in the Epic of Gilgamesh, and beer has been discovered in archaeological sites to be chemically dated back to the year 5,000 BC. And even today when we know everything about of process of crafting beer, it can never hurt to ask for some divine intervention.

India though is fast developing as super power with impressive industrial growth and economic development,it is falling behind on human development index. The education scenario is alarmingly dismal at the grass-root level.India’s education program is falling behind other nations. It is a country with population already touching one billion while only one third will be able to read.Due to various social and economic problems India’s education programme is besieged with many problems.

Of the biggest victims are those living in the rural areas.Allocation of government funds and the conditions of the destitute rural schools contribute to the low quality of education by rural children. Many children living in rural areas receive a level of education which is very poor.Overall enrollment in primary and middle schools are very low.50% of the children living in these areas leave school before the 5th class. These children leave school for many reasons – lack of interest, working in the fields where hours are long and pay is low.A large percent of dropouts are female children.Forced by their parents most girls perform chores and tend the family at home.

These are some of the reasons why female literacy stands low in India. As these children grow into adults, many are still illiterate by the age of 40.These uneducated adults are also reluctant to send their own children to school. This creates a vicious circle where whole section of the community remain uneducated.A large number of teachers refuse to teach in rural areas and those that do are usually are under qualified. In recent years the number of qualified teachers has increased because of increased efforts by the government and civil society groups to improve general education and professional training of teachers. Those who refuse to teach in the rural areas cite distance and lack of interest by students as problems.

Many teachers lack enthusiasm due to their meager salary.Another obstacle faced by the schools is that obtaining more teachers because of state guidelines that approve of high student-teacher ratio.Lack of books and learning materials seem to be a widespread problem. The use of high-tech devices such as computers are very rare. Most of the rural schools operate without toilets, drinking water facility and electricity. The distribution of government funds is major hinderance to the educational system.According to a recent study,30% of the total educational funding goes toward higher educational institutions.

This is an important factor as the percent of students enrolled in these institutions are much lower.Lack of education has resulted in growth of unemployment, poverty and substantial increase in the growth of population.Illiteracy has proven to be a major handicap. It has percolated through various systems affecting the India’s growth.India needs policy changes in the way we look into the education system in the country.Government should ensure that the funds should reach where they are meant for and not get exhausted in the pockets of few.

Most of us dream of winning the lottery some day. We automatically think of the nice things we will buy for ourselves – new house, car, etc – and of the relief it will be to finally pay our debts. Many of us also dream of being able to finally help out those people in society who really need our help – whether it is the poor, the elderly, or the sick.

I often wonder if people really do follow through with their intentions of giving to charities once they hit the jackpot. I did some research and have found some very generous lottery winners. They are listed here.

Winner: Sheelah Ryan of Seminole County, Florida

Winnings: $55.16 million in 1988

Donation: Established the Sheelah Ryan Foundation which helps abused woman, gives scholarships to young adults, pays for job training programs and provides Meals on Wheels for the elderly. The foundation gives about $200,000 annually to charities in the Seminole area.

In 1994, Sheelah Ryan died of cancer at the age of 69 but her foundation still lives on.

Winner: Bill and Tina Nguyen of Pierre, South Dakota

Winnings: jackpot was 117 million but opted one lump sum of 39 million in 2006

Donation: $33,000 to local grade school

Donation: $33,000 to a second local grade school

Donation: $32,000 to local Boys and Girls Club

Donation: undisclosed substantial amount to another large undisclosed organization.

Before winning the jackpot, the Nguyen’s owned a local nail salon. They sold it after winning the jackpot and moved away from South Dakota.

Winner: Anonymous schoolteacher from Taiwan

Winnings: Reported as “tens of millions of NT dollars” in 2005

Donation: ALL OF IT went to several cultural and educational programs to help children who come from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The 30 year old single female school teacher occasionally played the lottery for the sole purpose of donating all of her winnings to various charities if she ever won. With a teacher’s salary she was unable to donate much of her money to well deserved charities, so when she did hit the jackpot, she didn’t hesitate to donate every last penny of it.

Winner: Anonymous 23 year old office worker from Taichung, Taiwan

Winnings: NT320 million ($9,864,669 USD) in 2007

Donation: NT25 million ($770,677 USD) to “Light Up the Fire of Life” campaign

Donation: NT1 million ($30,827 USD) to the Children Charity Association

In addition, the generous donor gave NT60,000 ($1,849 USD) to the employee from the lottery stand where he won the ticket. The employee took that money, added an additional NT 40,000 and donated the NT100,000 ($3,082 USD) to the Taichung Family Assistance Centre.

Winner: Vaughn and Jan Sherman from Snohomish County, Washington

Winnings: $8 million USD in 1993

Donation: $8000 annually split between Edmunds Community College (to fund awards for outstanding faculty and staff) and the Dream Foundation which they created to grant college scholarships to Jan’s former students at Martin Luther King Elementary school.

Winner: Chang Tien-you of Taiwan

Winnings: NT100 million (over 3 million USD)

Donation: NT20 million ($616,541 USD) to Creation Social Welfare Foundation

Donation: NT4 milion to various other organizations.

Chang was a volunteer at the Creation Social Welfare Foundation, helping people with very limited means to survive. Hitting the jackpot enabled him to help these people in more ways than he could have ever imagined.

Winner: Janette and Stephen Wright, West Yorkshire, England

Winnings: £1,633,505 (3,224,606.43 USD) in 2007

Donation: Undisclosed amount to Kirkwood Hospice in Huddersfield.

Winner: Alain Maboussou, Quang Dao and Dung Tran in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Winnings: $365 million split between eight people, totaling 45.6 million each in 2006.

Donation: $6000 to People’s City Mission, a homeless shelter in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Donation: Later, Alain Maboussou donated $15,000 to Siena Francis House homeless shelter, by providing 375 people with a $40 Target gift to buy new clothes and other necessities.

Dao and Dung are refugees from Vietnam and Maboussou is an immigrant who left the Republic of Congo to flee civil war. One of the men stayed at the shelter before hitting the jackpot.

Winner: “Yu Sheng” of Taiwan

Winnings: NT100 million (over 3 million USD)

Donation: NT10 million to Syin Lu Welfare Foundation to be used in the “Community Residence and Life Services Project” which was aimed at making life better for the handicapped population.

Yu Sheng’s desire to help the handicapped came from hearing a story about a student who attended a center for the mentally challenged being violently evicted from the community by residents of the area. As a result, the student was no longer able to enter the community to attend school. Yu-sheng empathized with the student. As a handicapped, he knows that handicapped people face all sorts of difficulties. He wanted to do what he could to help.

Winner: Ray and Barbara Wragg from Sheffield, England

Winnings: £7.6 million (just over $15 million USD) in 2000

Donation: £6 million split between several charities. The main beneficiaries were Weston Park Hospital in Sheffield, which specialises in cancer treatment, and Sheffield Children’s Hospital

Donation: In 2003 the couple came to the aid of a group of Second World War veterans whose trip to honor their fallen comrades was in jeopardy after they failed to secure £12,500 in lottery funding. The Wraggs gave 50 veterans enough money to visit Italy in 2004 for the 60th anniversary of the battle of Monte Cassino.

Though it is a bitter history of India, we Indians overcame that.

Everyone knows the history of India. But not all knows how much wealth it gave to this world. I don’t mean the literature and culture it taught to this world. I mean the real wealth, the money, the gold and diamonds stolen, looted by the British rulers, when they ruled India for nearly 200 years.

During the mid of 1770’s, the western countries, especially Britain had Industrial revolution and it was completely financed by the money looted from India. Even William Digby and British historian agreed that without the “Venture Capital” which was looted from Bengal, the Industrial Revolution might not have happened. In 1957, the Battle of Plessey happened among the Nawab of Bengal and British rulers. But Robert Clive defeated the effort of evicting the British rule. During this battle, Bengal got looted completely.

The looted money and wealth were then showered in the industrial revolution, which helped in the inventions like “The spinning Jenny” in the year 1764, “The water Frame”, a machine to spin cotton threads in the year 1769, “The Steam Engine” in the year 1785 and a lot more.

Apart from financing the British people to develop their inventions and economy, the wealth of India also helped Americans also to grow economically. During 19th century, USA levied heavy and stiff tariffs on any goods that are imported from Britain. Since Britain didn’t have any problem for wealth and money, as it was flowing from India, which they absorbed completely. So they didn’t care about the high taxes. So, the prosperity of India was shared with America also by the British rulers.

One more Englishman mentioned in his note about India, “Even after sucking the entire wealth of India, our government is still giving more sufferings to the people of India by forcing them to by their products like dresses which they wove by the inventions sponsored by Indian money. How people of hot country can wear a dress woven for a cold country like England?” and so on…

Anglophiles’ note of apology says “British colonial rule in India was the organized banditry that financed England’s Industrial Revolution”. The British rulers even took over the technology of India, along with money. Will Durant, an American Historian mentioned in his note “India was flourishing in Ship building besides the expertise of making steel and textiles. But all got ruined when British took over those technologies”.

Only few knows that the birth place of the world famous Kohinoor diamond (which means Mountain of Light), which is currently a part of the Royal British Crown Jewels, is India. This 105 carat diamond was the largest one at that time and it was kept by various Mughal Emperors. But it was later looted by the East Indian Company, which was then gifted to Queen Victoria when she was declared as “Empress of India” in the year 1877.

Roughly it has been estimated as one trillion dollar money that was looted by the British rulers in that 200 years ruling, apart from some other wealth like gold, diamonds and raw materials which got transported. India remains as a “Developing Country“.

Note: As I said earlier, though this is a bitter history, we Indians over came that and currently don’t have any hatred towards people of Britain. So, this is just a piece of old prosperous India’s story, I felt sharing.
