I wrote this song during a time when the world felt especially loud and overwhelming. It became a reflection on feeling worn down by the constant stream of news and noise, and the simple wish to step away from it all and reconnect with something real and grounding. As I sing in the song: “I’ll take my van down to the lake, where I can breathe the air and nothing I see is fake.”

It started as a fun way to do something different from my usual songs. Then it became a yearly tradition. Now, after two decades I decided to gather up all the songs from the last 7 years, write 2 new ones and re-imagine Silent Night, and wrap them all in paper for you as one last Christmas bang! I’m not saying I’ll never write another Christmas song, but the yearly tradition is coming to an end with this album. The last song on Wrapped in Paper – Merry Christmas, Adios, So Long – is my goodbye and my explanation to this.

For my final Christmas single, I planned to finally write something cheerful—a proper jingle bells moment. But if you know me, you know that’s not what happened.

Instead, what emerged was “Let Peace be the Song”—a protest Christmas song. The world shapes what we create, whether we intend it to or not. This song is a plea for peace, but also about the weariness of watching injustice unfold. I kept it stripped bare—just guitar and voice—because folk music has always been the home for feelings like these.

I know this might not be what everyone wants from a Christmas song. Sometimes we need beauty and comfort. Which is why the rest of Wrapped in Paper offers that too—including a new open-tuning arrangement of “Silent Night” with soaring violins, and other songs meant to be savored.

I hope you’ll find something in it that speaks to you.

With Wrapped in Paper, I’m closing a chapter — my long tradition of releasing a new Christmas song every year. The album gathers together all the holiday songs I’ve written since 2017, including two new originals and an open-tuning cover of “Silent Night.” It captures the softer, more emotional side of Christmas — stories of hope, humanity, and reflection.

But that’s not all! If that’s not enough music for the season, I’m also releasing a brand-new album with my side project Hansan — a stunning collection of songs in Swedish, featuring a special duet with Swedish rock poet Stefan Sundström. Blue Moon was my first venture into becoming an artist, and we recorded this album during 40 intense hours in a small studio in Stockholm in 2005. My backing band ”The Tallboys” continued to record and play live with me for many years and a few of the guys still play live, and on recordings, with me when they can. Still 20 years later, I consider them all some of my best friends. I am very happy to be able to offer this album as a vinyl, years after the album was discontinued as a CD.

So as if that was not enough, my side project Hansan is also releasing both our albums, ”Nattflykt” and “Blood seller Bläck” as vinyl. Why not save on shipping and order all three at the same time.

We were joking in the studio when we were recording this song that it is Folk Metal, because the title – Circle of Destruction – sounds like a metal song more than a Folk/Americana/bluegrass piece. But it’s not Folk Metal, so don’t worry. I wrote the song in the first days of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but it’s also inspired by non war immigration, as well as a search for truth in a society that is more information based than fact based.

We recorded the song (and album) in the most peaceful place! Imagine yourself in a small rural village in Sweden. White-trimmed wooden houses that date back several hundred years are tucked in between the pines and birch tees next to the quiet lake where the sunlight glitters like gold on the gentle ripple. All around you, you can hear the buzzing of bumblebees, birds singing in the trees, and the sheep are grazing in a nearby pasture, surrounded by a hand tied willow fence. You can imagine that all that magic seeped into the recordings (and some of the bird song too).

With a group of carefully selected musicians; Peyton Clifford and Drake Duffer on accordion, guitar, and mandolin (both hailing from North Carolina) and Janne Manninen on bass (from Sweden), we built up a studio in the living room of one of the old houses. I’m so happy with how the album is turning out and I hope you will like it too!

We are heading out for a 4 month tour all the way from the East Coast to the West Coast and into CA and AZ. It will be a lot of shows and I hope to see you at any of them. Although I myself is not a believer in a higher being, I respect all peoples religious beliefs, as long as they are not forcing them on to someone else. This song highlights what happens when you do. This is not about beliefs, it’s about using political power to suppress women’s rights.

Another thing that really helps in times like these are to go to concerts. Buying tickets in advance, or reserving a seat is key to make the tour successful. I have artist friends who had the venue cancel their show due to low advance ticket sales, so if you are planning to go, don’t wait, get your ticket today. Consider inviting your friends, or why not buy them a ticket as a gift. It’s a win for all of us, the more the merrier.

The thing that trumped all that though, was the appreciation and happiness we received at every show, from audience and promotors alike. We could really tell that people have been longing for live music after these past two years. It felt great to be back on the stage, and to get to see all of you. The online shows were a must during the days of no live shows, but nothing beats seeing you guys and hearing you laugh and clap.

Here’s a little acoustic live video I did in the artist lounge at Stringbreak Music Festival.

Now I’m scrambling to get my USA Fall tour together. I had a full schedule in 2020 and many of the shows has been successfully rescheduled, but about 30% or so have bit the dust, so the schedule still has a lot of TBAs that I hope to fill (if you want to host a house concert give me a holler). And don’t worry Europe, I will be back in Germany for my Christmas tour in December.

I’ve made a little collection of some of the pictures from the tour, that I think sums it up. So thank you so much to everyone who came out, hosted a house concert, invited me to play at your venue and bought a CD or a hat. And thank you so much to David Allgood for playing bass with me on 10 of my shows, I wish I could bring you to all of them.
