Creating Custom Ringtones For IPhone [Quicktip]

Bored with using the same ringtone as every other iPhone user out there, or do you have a special part of a song that you want to put as your personal ringtone? You can always check outringtone sites to find the tune you like or, you can try to create your own custom iPhone ringtone.

If you don’t already know, you have to use a unique ringtone file format that the iPhone recognizes, an m4r file format. With iTunes, you can easily create custom ringtones in m4r format, with any of your existing songs in your library.

We’ll show you how to slice up your favorite parts of a song in your iTunes library, thentransfer it to your iPhone for use.

Creating The Unique IPhone Ringtone File

First select a song or sound clip from your iTunes library. Right click on the song and select Create AAC Version.

iTunes will duplicate the same file with all its naming details, in a different format. You can tell them apart by right clicking on one of them and selecting ‘Get Info’. Under ‘Kind’, it should say AAC audio file.

At the same window, select ‘Options’. Here, you determine the Start Time and Stop Time of the clip. The length should be less than 30 seconds. You will need to play the clip several times and use trial and error to get your snippet in the correct spot.

Once you are satisfied, click ‘OK’.

Locate the same AAC file, right click on it and click on Create AAC Version to create a second version of the AAC file. iTunes will then create a version of that song that is only 30 seconds long.

Now right click on your song snippet, and click on ‘Show in Windows Explorer’ (for Windows) or ‘Show in Finder’ (for Mac). Rename the file type from .m4a to .m4r, and give it a different name.

Tip: If you are not sure which file it is, the file size of the 30-second clip should be a lot smaller than the original AAC file.

Once renamed, you can drag that .m4r file into iTunes.

Transferring The Ringtone To Your IPhone

In iTunes, the ringtone you’ve created should be under Tones, and from there, you can rename it and then drag it into your iPhone. After that, click ‘Sync’.

On your iPhone, change the ringtone under Settings > Sounds.

You can choose to delete the full AAC version of song to avoid duplicate files.

It looks like the South Korean are not sure which display to implement on the Galaxy Note 3, and the representatives are planning to replace the AMOLED with an LCD one developed by Sharp, according to SamMobile. It would make sense because Samsung bought a part of Sharp not long ago in its interest for LCD panels. It looks like the styluses work better on LCD displays, and the company might be planning to improve the S Pen experience of the Galaxy Note 3 users.

This is not the first time when a rumor claims that Samsung would use an LCD display on one of its new products. As you remember, the Galaxy S4 was said to come with an LCD screen, but according to the latest reports, the S4 will sport a PHOLED display replacing the old AMOLED.

The Motorola Droid RAZR and RAZR MAXX can now be updated to the official Android 4.1 Jelly Bean using the instructions that I have listed in this article. Make sure to read the entire post and note that you can even use this post for Droid RAZR and RAZR MAXX phones that are rooted and preserve their current state. If you cannot complete the update, then you should ask for more help in our comments field and we will try to come up with solutions for any problems that you encountered in the process.

Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean has been sent OTA for the Motorola devices but not all users got this update because they are rooted. Installing this update will roll your device back to stock Android 4.1.2 JB and Motorola UI. However, the new update doesn’t feature the former Motorola bloatware and you will see that the Google Chrome is now the default browser, while the Social Location, Alarm and Timer have been removed completely. The new OS looks much more like the stock Android OS.

Read the guidelines below to learn what steps you need to take in order to make sure that you flash the firmware update at your first attempt. Here’s what you need to know:

Use this tutorial only for the Motorola Droid RAZR and Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX phones with the model number XT912. The files you find in this post will not work with any other smartphone or tablet device.
Also, the OS currently installed on your Droid RAZR / RAZR MAXX should be running the 100% stock Android 4.0.4 ROM with build number 6.16.211 and for the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean build number 98.72.8 that was leaked in December 2012. Check the ‘build number’ in by going through Settings > About Phone options.

Enable USB debugging option from the Android Developer Options.
Make sure that your phone’s battery has at least 50% power left in it. This will prevent it from powering off during the installation process of the new update files.
This is a guide for advanced Android users and you shouldn’t attempt to use this tutorial in case you’re a novice. Read all the instructions listed and ask for extra help in comments.

The updating process might take at least 10 minutes to complete and you might notice that the device reboots from time to time.
When the update completes, the phone will boot into normal mode and you can start testing the new OS.

Users that wish to restore rooted for their device should follow the extra instructions below:

Launch again OTA RootKeeper application.
Click the Restore Root button to restore the root access for your smartphone.

Back in 2004, Gmail rewrote the rules for Web-based email. It had a fast, clean interface, and a jaw-dropping 1GB of free storage. Today, it comes with ten times the amount of space, and boasts many millions of users across the globe.

But even if you use it every day, you're probably not making the most of the features it has to offer. With these seven tips, you can take your Gmail life beyond "power user." You can be an off-the-deep-end Gmail megalomaniac.

1. Let filters do the work

Managing an inbox is no easy task, but Gmail has tools to help. You can turn any search into a filter that can then be actioned: search for emails "from:Facebook", for example, then create a filter to mark these messages as read and archive them (assuming you don't want to know what's happening on Facebook, of course). Or build a filter to match the email addresses of your nearest and dearest, then mark these messages as important to ensure you never miss an email from your better half. Filters can promote important messages and downgrade the clutter before you've even logged in.

2. Make the most of search

You would expect a Google product to excel in search. It's not always obvious, but the Gmail search box has more flexibility than you might think—click the drop-down arrow to the right to see all the options on offer. Look for emails with attachments, then delete these messages if you want to free up some room in your account perhaps. Or, if you're searching for an email from a particular sender, streamline the search with a "TK:TK" command.

If you have a particular search query—emails from your birthday last year, the year before, or any year, say—you can dig them up and relive the moment. Of course, how well this works depends on how many emails you received from friends and family to mark the occasion, and how many were auto-generated greetings from the forums and mailing lists you've signed up for.

3. Split your inboxes

Via the Inbox tab of the Gmail Settings page, you can customize how your emails are ordered on screen and utilize Google's unique Priority Inbox feature. But wait, there's more! Delve into the Labs page and you can activate an Outlook-style Preview Pane (particularly handy on bigger monitors) or a Multiple Inboxes feature.

The latter option adds a new tab to the Settings screen where you can configure three independent panes matching the search queries of your choice. See starred (by searching for "is:starred"), unread (is:unread) and important (is:important) messages alongside each other. Or you can group emails matching three different labels (label:labelname)—the choice is yours. Note: you'll need to deactivate Priority Inbox for Multiple Inboxes to work.

4. Bring in the other email

If you've got a Yahoo or Hotmail email address you use for newsletters and the like, why not import these messages into Gmail too? The Accounts and Import tab of the Settings page makes the process very straightforward, and you can of course mark these imported messages as read or apply a label using a filter. You might even want to import your work emails as a backup.

Here's another tip: enter yourname+anything@gmail.com when filling out Web forms. You can use any word after the plus symbol, and emails to the address will reach your inbox. Once they arrive, you can use the "to:yourname+anything@gmail.com" filter to take appropriate action.

5. Look to the stars

Superstars are available in the General tab in Settings. Up to 12 stars and symbols can be used, rather than just the single default one, and a multiple click on the star icon by a message cycles through them.

Use these multiple stars to split home and work emails, or mark urgent messages, group them by category, or flag them for reminders to follow up. Each star has its own search query too—for a green colored star, it's "has:green-star"—and that can be used as the basis of a filter or a multiple inbox. Hover over any star to see its associated search code.

6. Work the labels

Labels are one of Gmail's best features. Labels make searching through thousands of emails much easier. Make sure you use them.

Remember that filters can apply labels automatically for you if want. They can also help you clear out clutter in your Gmail account too—you can enter "label:newsletter before:2011/01/01" into the search box and then get busy with the delete key, for example, if you have a newsletter filter set up.

7. Extend Gmail's capabilities

There are plenty of third-party apps and extensions that can extend the capabilities of Gmail. Take, for example, Rapportive, which adds details from Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter next to your contacts' profiles. It's fast, sleek, and soon feels like a native Gmail feature.

Another of our favorite third-party tools isBoomerang, which enables you to schedule emails to send later and reminds you to follow up important messages after a certain period of time if you haven't had a response.

8. Customize the Density

You might not like the space between the messages in an email list, but you're not stuck with a certain display. Just hit the "settings" cog igon, and you can see more or fewer messages on screen by changing the display density.

9. Make an email a To Do

Sometimes you just can't send a certain email right then and there, but you don't want to forget to do it altogether. Just hit the "More" menu above an email, turn it into a to do task, and schedule it on your calendar.

10. Do the basics better

We have to mention a few basic things about Gmail just to make your mastery complete. You probably know you can click the "+" menu at the bottom of the new compose window, then click the little chain icon to insert a web link into the email. But here's a tip: you can also insert an email link in your email.

And, one last thing about searching, which is a basic email function that's not totally obvious in Gmail. If you want to search a message from a particular sender, type "from:emailname@gmail.com" in the search field.

None of the devices lack in build quality though, and both of them feel premium, with the Lumia 920 probably edging out the Z10 in terms of ruggedness.

The Z10 weighs in at just 137 gm and is 9 mm thick while the Lumia 920 is a hefty 185 gm with a thickness of 10.7 mm. If large phones bother you, you probably should go for the Z10, but then again, if 185 gm is too much to hold you probably have more problems to deal with. Color wise the Lumia 920 has more options and comes in red, yellow, white and black, as well as grey and cyan for some markets. The Z10, on the other hands comes in just black and white. Funky colors not withstanding, both phones looks great and it’s just a matter of what appeals to you more.

Screen

The one thing common between both these devices is a great screen. Both the units are of the LCD variety and are excellent at reproducing colors and contrasts. Sharpness is top notch too, since both employ a resolution of 1280 x 768 in a similar screen size, which results in a pixel density value of more than 330 ppi. In terms of numbers, the Z10 has a higher pixels per inch value because it’s a 4.2 inch screen compared to the Lumia 920′s 4.5 inch screen, but in the real world you really won’t be able to make out any difference.

Tech wise though, the Lumia 920 has a superior and more responsive touchscreen, which comes with the PureMotion tech. It has the lowest refresh time of 5ms and can also be used with gloves, a stylus, nails, you name it. The screen also automatically adjusts brightness and contrast in the sunlight for maximum readability. The Z10 is also very usable in sunlight, it just doesn’t adjust brightness and contrast. All in all, both these phones have great touchscreens worthy of any flagship.

Camera

None of the BlackBerry devices are particularly known for their cameras and unfortunately it’s the same case with the Z10. It’s probably the best camera of all BlackBerry’s, but it just doesn’t compete with the Lumia 920′s excellent PureView camera. Only just now it’s got features like tap to click that have been standards on smartphones since years.

In daylight, the Z10 does a pretty fine job of capturing photos but tends to become slightly noisy and grainy. The Lumia 920 isn’t the best in daylight photos but does pip the Z10 in this regard. In low light however, the Lumia 920 destroys the competition, Z10 included. It must be said that with flash on, the Z10 puts up a pretty good fight.

Extra features wise, both cameras have different names for similar technologies (Time Shift in the Z10 and Smart Shoot in the Lumia 920), but again the Lumia 920 is the clear winner because of 360 degree panoramas, optical image stabilization and a variety of camera lens applications to enhance pictures. If you’re a photography lover, make no mistake, the Lumia 920 should be your choice.

Storage

The BlackBerry Z10 is the winner here hands down because of the ability to use a MicroSD card to expand storage. Lumia 920′s 32 GB of internal non expandable storage might be enough for most, but the ability to expand storage is always welcome. The BlackBerry Z10 comes with 16 GB of internal storage.

Battery

Battery life varies wildly on both these smartphones. While the initial battery life of the Lumia 920 was lackluster, after a week or two of usage it improves and users have reported excellent battery life. On an average you can easily get around 12-14 hours of moderate to heavy usage which isn’t bad at all considering how much tech has to be powered, like the large and super sensitive touchscreen.

The Z10 is a similar case, and many users complained about battery life at launch. However, there has been an update that apparently fixes these issues and now users are reporting improved battery life in the region of 12 hours or so of moderate to heavy usage which puts both smartphones in the same boat in terms of battery life.

OS and special features

Here’s where the smartphones really differ. The Nokia Lumia 920 runs on the Windows Phone 8 OS while the BlackBerry Z10 runs on the all new BlackBerry 10 OS. We’ve covered the launch and features of both these operating systems in detail and there’s really no way to crown a winner. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, as well as similarities. Windows Phone 8 and BlackBerry 10 are both new OS’es looking to challenge the supremacy of Android and iOS, and are quite similar in the regards of low app store count, integrated social hubs, easy to use interface etc.

But no matter the number of similarities, they’re very different operating systems. While one goes for simple and minimalistic, one is intuitive and slick. BlackBerry 10 will definitely appeal to older BlackBerry users even though it’s a paradigm shift. The business and communication features are still top of the pile.

Windows Phone 8 will appeal to Windows 8 and Windows Phone 7.5/7.8 users, who won’t find much of a difference shifting to it, visually at least. It remains one of the most no nonsense, fast and easy to use operating systems out there and is a good choice for pretty much any user.

Speaking of special features, the Lumia 920 has a lot of hardware features like the PureView camera, PureMotion HD+ screen, wireless charging and such, while the Z10 boasts of the best keyboard in the market, unparalleled business and security features and exclusive communication features like the BlackBerry Messenger.

This is a very subjective category and we recommend having a little hands on with both of the phones before making a final decision, because they’re so different it cannot be described. Both operating systems are fantastic in their own regard and it depends on what you’re going to be using the phone for.

Conclusion

So is there a clear winner here? We can’t say. Both these flagships from the fallen titans are fantastic devices that won’t disappoint in any regard and no matter the sales, we can confidently say that no matter your choice, you won’t go wrong. After comparing the categories above you can perhaps make an informed decision depending on your lifestyle, and in daily use none of the phones are going to disappoint. It’s great to see competition from smartphones that aren’t Android and iOS, not only because it gives the customer more choice, but because of the age old concept, competition drives innovation.We’re going to see a lot more phones and features come up because every manufacturer is looking to one up the other, and in the end it’s to our advantage!
