SOIL

Sustainable Organic Integrated Livelihoods (SOIL) is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting soil resources, empowering communities and transforming wastes into resources in Haiti. We believe that the path to sustainability is through transformation, of both disempowered people and discarded materials, turning apathy and pollution into valuable resources.

"Even prior to the earthquake, Haiti had the worst sanitation of any country in the western hemisphere. Most people here who don't have access to a toilet go in the bushes or in plastic bags that get thrown into abandoned lots or bodies of water.

SOIL EcoSan Toilets 20 Times Cheaper to Maintain Than Port-a-Potties

After the earthquake, international relief organizations attempted to fight the resulting sanitation crisis by building thousands of toilets and latrines in the camps of the newly homeless. As an organization that has focused on environmentally-sound waste disposal, SOIL had serious reservations about the focus on traditional sanitation interventions in these camps.

Thank you to everyone who made SOIL’s first EcoSan Training on Thursday, February 24th in Port-au-Prince Haiti such a rousing success! SOIL welcomed representatives from relief organizations working around the country (Concern, Mercy Corps, Islamic Relief Haiti, GOAL, ACTED, Solidarities International, AMURT, Architecture for Humanity, etc) who came seeking information on how to build ecological sanitation (EcoSan) solutions into their own projects.

One year ago this morning millions of Haitians rose to greet the cool January sunshine. They walked the streets of Port au Prince, on their way to work, through the damp corridors of the capital. The National Palace towered over Champs Mars and the bells of the National Cathedral greeted the market women who gathered long before sunrise. Thousands of mothers kissed their children goodbye for the day and hundreds of schools throughout the capital echoed with the voices of students eager to learn after the Christmas holiday. The parks of the city smelled of fried food and charcoal smoke.
