Good news for VideoShare !!! Nokia's move.

Recently Nokia has been adding the VideoShare feature (SeeWhatISee) to mid-tier handsets as 6110, 6120 and 6130, with configuration menu.
We are excited:

Till now, the entry level of using N Series was a barrier for several customers asking for small and cheaper devices. FIXED.
Till now not available handsets with WCDMA bands used in Europe/Asia (mostly 2100) and US and SouthAmeria (1900/850). That is letting us (Solaiemes) to demonstrate in a lot of countries the capabilities of our mobile infrastructure.

Hope we strength soon links with Nokia to cooperate to make VideoShare a killer feature and feasible a lot of high added value mobile use cases.

Solaiemes has been selected by RedHerring as Finalist of the RedHerring 100 Europe 2008 Awards. We thank this kind of mentions just when our starp-up is 18 months old, a baby just walking but not able to speak very clear yet :-).

We are growing, our solutions infrastructure is ready, we have projects deploying our technologies, and first adopters customers interested, and this kind of initiatives help to highlight brand awareness. In few months our hard work has been compensated with VC investment, several important projects for us, the GSMA shorlisting us as Top Mobile Innovators at Mobile Asia Congress, being awarded by Bancaja at their Entrepreneurship Awards and finally being finalist at RedHerring 100.
Hope this kind of mentions will stimulate "first adopters" of new technologies in the same way they stimulate VC to invest :-)

Congratulations to all the other finalist start-up, specially the spanish ones, je je, and of course, all the very young start-ups at seed/A funding round :-), the hardest but also the most challenging times.

Hi,
We just come back after 4 crazy days, fortunately crazy days :-)
Our first time exhibiting at Mobile World Congress (Barcelona, Feb 11-14th) was a great experience for us. Our booth, located at Innovation Zone, in the Hall 7 (the same as media&entertaiment), was in the upper side of the exhibition area, a bit far away from main suppliers halls. In spite of that we received a lot of visitors.
We work several weeks in order to promote our presence there, and all the scheduled meetings took place (some of them thanks to the IRC Brokerage Event). The key fact was that we were visited by people from international carriers from Asia, America, Middle East and Europe, IMS involved people from leader suppliers, journalists, mobile evangelizers. As summary, we were impressed.

We were also visited by our current costumers and partners. We hope to repeat next year with new amazing things to enhance Mobility :-)

original size is QCIF (176x144) and the UMTS uplink was 64 kbps, the quality then is limited, hope soon the uplink rate will reach 128 kbps and the handset clients will do also.

As promised we will be posting unveiling our new products "road to Barcelona Mobile Congress" using the blog. Today the Peer to Multipeer VideoShare Application Server.

What's that? it is the infrastructe enabling a mobile to several mobiles VideoShare combinational call. The calling party voice-call the application server, type the called group code, and share the video, then the application server set up the multiparty with the called party subscribers and as soon as they are accepting the video-invite is sent.

Just notice that we are using videoshare native feature (the Nokia N Series one), not installing specific client. Hanset manufacters looking for application for their videoshare features, please, contact us :-)

The peer to multipeer application server is connected to the IMS or is privately hosted using our ConverG product.
This product has inmediate application in the emergencies and law & reinforcement fields and also to build up mobile communities.

LiveServe 2.0...when Mobile and WEB 2.0 walk together :-)

Hi, we will publish in the next few days a press release in out website, but just in advance for our readers, we are going to unveil our first product reaching the second release, the LiveServe.

Here you can find a video with a couple of use cases, integration as Widget of 3G VideoShare "See What I See" in blogger public site, and the video-real-time-autoposting, a way to create personal videoblogs from whatever you are in your important moments. Concepts as video-twiter become feasible, and a lot of enterprise productivity solutions could be based in real time videoreporting.
We did not install anything in the device, we are using native features as VideoShare and can use videocall (but videocall has worse performace), these are network infrastructure based solutions.

It is time for carriers to make the move towards IMS, or at least enable this kind of services increasing ARPU, and new MVNO's to take a look about this services as virgin market segment to get customers, not only techy individuals but media companies, services companies, emergency forces, law & reinforcement, etc.

1st VC Round completed !!!

When we started-up Solaiemes, we did not want to wait until the company got the needed funding to develope and show our multimedia mobile solutions infrastructure.

With limited resources we reached some milestones and at the same time tried to get VC at the starting level we needed.

Last October we signed de entrepreneur soft-loan (NEOTEC) from CDTI (Spanish Ministery of Industry).

Now after Due-Dilligenge and negotiation proccess we reached an agreement with EURECAN, the VC fund of Caja Navarra (www.cajanavarra.es), EureCan invests in our Company.

When coming from a multinational huge company, it is difficult to become entrepreneur with not initial VC backing your project, and it is a difficult change not only regarding financial risk but working enviroment. Working in facilities with 300 colleagues and the day after working alone, or with 1 or 2 people, it was hard at the beginning, but the week ending we had our first town-hall with more than 10 people, partners, employees, thesis developers and Java university researchers involved with our project. I was happy, even realizing that till now tidy office is now being under the entrophy :-) and then some kind of combat will take place between jedi's and dark side of the mess.

But the important thing is that Solaiemes is taking off, we attract talent, we got clients, our technologies are being recognized, and the critical mass point is being achieved.

It is hard to start-up a company from scratch, you know... finding right partners, recruiting enthusiastic people, making the business plan, reviewing the business plan, correcting the business plan ;-), research funds, bureaucracy, develope fast first prototypes of product portfolio, the challenge of getting first customers, got customers happy after trusting us.

Just arriving to our first "birthday" we just received the good new about being selected as a 'Top Innovator' for the GSMA's Mobile Innovation Summit at Asian Mobile Congress in Macau (12-13/November).

Mobile 2.0 and Web 2.0...possible flirt?

The succesful Web 2.0 concepts, well-know ones as youtuve and social/professional networks facebook, linkedin, blogging sites, microblogging sites as jaiku and twitter too far from Mobility.
Fair to admit some of the web 2.0 allows to introduce posts from mobile with easy user interfaces but we need additional steps to build up "seamless comunities".

Services anybody?

ITU-T hosted in Geneva during the past week a workshop on "Multimedia in NGN". Interesting topics discussed but mainly from a technical point of view.

Everybody talks about the same services as the "NGN services":

Killer applications?: Video Blogging, Sharing, Video Ring Back Tones, Video to voice call continuity, innovative AMS applications
[From the summary notes from session "Using NGN capabilities to deliver multimedia services"]

Is this what the mass market wants?. I very much doubt it. These services need expensive devices, user experience are very complex, and will probably also generate expensive bills, as carriers will want to recover investment very quickly. Users can do most of these things now using on their PCs without any NGN.

The most interesting presentation was by NTT ("NTT's challenge: create new business on the NGN") and provided some interesting point of views about NTT perception of the NGN from a services point of view. They expect a massive user migration to FTTH networks, the raising curve of the number of FTTH users will catch DSL users in the first quarter of 2008.

Most importantly, NTT realizes that "The NTT Group cannot by itself make the most effective use of the NGN", they will build the session control around IMS but the services to network interfaces (SNI) will be opened to other companies and service providers, with several models considered: application hosted in NTT, 3rd party service provider directly accessing the SNI, etc. This is clearly the way forward (and NTT DoCoMo implemented it right in i-mode).

NTT is working on a very interesting service classification:

Daily life services, such as telemetrics for utility companies, home automation / domotics, control of multimedia equipment, etc.
Business related services, with examples a bit unrealistic, such as a bigger-than-life video conference facility that must cost a fortune.
Content-related services, following the trend towards digital content, video on demand, etc.

Other topics in the workshop were ubiquitous sensor networks and NGN, etc. Take a look too to the presentation by the 3GPP SA chairman about how they are trying to prevent fragmentation of the IMS standard. And there was a very intriguing presentation about how carriers could embrace peer-2-peer on their own telecom solutions ...

Carrier's desperation driving IMS ??? Not the best approach ...

Heavy Reading has just published a report on IMS status in carriers. "IMS Deployment Update: Promise & Challenges" (executive summary here). It shows that two perceptions I have already heard elsewhere are really quite widespread:

First (quoting from TMCnet), one of the conclusions from the report's author: "After several years of unvarnished hype, IMS has moved from hero to zero faster than the average telco panacea [...] IMS is a dying issue."

But, strinkingly, operator representatives also admit to be "struggling to find a position in the Web 2.0 world," and that "we don't see any other way to go but IMS."

On one hand we see that there is some perception that IMS is not only going down the hype curve, but actually dying. This is somehow expected. It will take some time to overcome all the issues of an over-hyped, very complex and new technology. And it remains to be seen how different will be what it is now IMS (in specs and drawing boards) from the result of that distillation process.

On the other hand, the carriers are desperate to embrace IMS' promise. But are they adding the non-technical components that are needed to make it a success? I am talking about imagination here. Migrating existing services to IMS will not provide much benefit, market needs imaginative services, but there is no much creativity yet. New services (like PoC) are not launched because of concerns about cannibalisation or revenue erosion ... Why not create new business models (such as PoC person-to-machine / machine-to-person, etc)? Risk is negligible for carriers, and much better than desperation anyway.

Following a long tradition, operators are turning to vendors to provide some "mojo", but incumbents suppliers are also worried about erosion of established businesses. Startups are more likely to provide the innovation the market needs.

Solaiemes joins Mobile Innovation Programme

We are happy to announce we just joined the Mobile Innovation Programme http://www.mobileinnovation.org/

As we said in the previous post we think very useful these kind of initiatives and aligned with our objectives of portfolio awarenes, industry networking and speed up the adoption of innovations.

We recently joined OMA as supporter member also and we believe in all pieces of this industry (telecom) needed each others and then trying to work together and create sinergies: carriers, big infrastructure vendors, huge services companies, and small/middle sized innovation start-ups.

The GSM Association http://www.gsmworld.com/ recently launched the Mobile Innovation Programme. http://www.mobileinnovation.org/

In their own words:

"The Mobile Innovation Programme has been created by the GSMA in order to showcase and promote the best in mobile innovation. By giving early insight into breakthrough technologies, the Programme will ensure that innovation is broadly aligned with operators' business strategies and end user needs, leading to faster and wider adoption by operators and delivering value for all stakeholders. "

We are happy for these initiatives which help small start-ups to be in touch with carrier, VC and analysts.

In our business development meetings with infrastructure vendors and carriers we detected "blocking issues" with IMS deployment, no ecosystem of application available implies IMS deployment delay and IMS deployment delay makes no available for commercial services IMS based mobile solutions being developed by innovation focused small-size companies.

Hope this kind of initiatives help to put together Carriers, hard infrastructure providers and applications vendors to speed up mobility innovation adoption. Solaiemes says THANKS GSMA :-)

How important is the corporate Website?

We are being mentored by investors or public institutions mentoring pilots. One of the concerns is about sales & marketing and the right website style according our company vision. As we do technology we tried to reproduce the technology company style, but as we talk about new ways to do mobile marketing and CRM they asked us to introduce more "pic" component. As responsible soldiers we did. New look:

and we tried to "improve" texts, introduce diagrams to our product description pages to make easier to understand the architectures where our "boxes" are adding new capabilities.

As usual, any comment, suggestion will be more than welcome. Opinions and comments about the role of the website in the corporate brand policies, influence in own marketing, etc, more than welcome also
