Involving the Chain of Command - When is it appropriate?

A recent post on my Facebook page for army wives promoted me to write this piece. Please remember that this is my personal opinion. Where there are facts I will put (fact) before the statement.

There seems to be some disagreement among the "spouse community" as to when it's appropriate to involve a soldiers Chain of Command in their "personal affairs". I'm sure most people can agree that there are times when CoC involvement is needed, but when exactly are those times?

First, I'll deal with the "cheating problem" -- (Fact - Adultery is a crime punishable under Article 134 of the UCMJ) - in the 12 1/2 years that I have been a military spouse, cheating seems to happen often, and everywhere. While adultery is against military law, in my personal opinion, getting the command involved is situational. For example: if your spouse cheats and you decide to stay and work it out, I see it pointless to involve the command. Or, if your spouse cheats and you decide to leave (with kids), I also find it pointless to involve the command. Why? THE CHILDREN. If you go to command with proof of adultery and they decide to take action against the soldier, he could lose rank and/or pay. That hurts the children in the long run when it comes to his financial obligation to them. Now, if the cheating co-exists with physical and verbal abuse, or the soldier is neglecting duties (like bills) at home as a result of the adulterous relationship, then I think the command should be involved.

Next, I'd like to touch on abuse -- emotional, verbal and/or physical abuse, against the spouse and/or children. (Fact - Army Regulation 608-18 establishes the Army policy for handling domestic violence issues.) This is a situation, in my personal opinion, where it is extremely important for the command to be notified! If a soldier is being abusive at home, there is obviously something "wrong" with them and they need help immediately. Not only for the sake of the spouse/kids, but for the sake of themselves as well. You can say "oh the spouse should just leave", but we all know that many times the abuser has broken them down so bad that they feel it's impossible to leave (especially without help). And say they do leave, who will the abuser turn his attention to next? The abuser needs help, along with his victims.

There have been times where women have written into my Facebook page about physical abuse against them and their children at the hands of their spouse, the service member. They were afraid and confused and didn't know how to get out of a bad situation. Every single one of those times, I found the information I needed (sometimes with the help of a few trusted friends) to contact, and forward the message, to the soldiers command, or unit Chaplin. I know, I know... THE HORROR! How could I do that? Why didn't I mind my business?! Simple. They came to me for help. If I did nothing and later found out a spouse or child was killed, or injured so bad they were in the hospital, I couldn't live with the guilt of knowing I could've helped but done nothing. One woman wrote me back and thanked me. Her husbands command got to the root of the problem and he was getting the help he needed and they, as a family, were on the road to recovery.

Lastly, alcohol and/or drug abuse, this includes prescription drugs. Now, let's be honest. Who honestly wants to work with someone who is abusing alcohol and drugs? Not only does that put the abuser at risk for accidents at work, but everyone around them. If a soldier is abusing a substance, the need to enroll in ASAP, The Army Substance Abuse Program. (Fact - AR 600-85 says the command must be involved). Alcohol and drug abuse combined with depression and PTSD (among other issues service members deal with) is a recipe for disaster. In my personal opinion, getting the Chain of Command involved isn't even an option, it's a must. I would rather my husband hate me for involving command in a serious issue than end up dead because I didn't try to help. That's just me though.

I'm going to ask members of my fan page about reasons they think you SHOULD NOT involve a soldiers command. That will be my next post.

Honey, I'm Just Along For The Ride!

Apparently there is a page on FB called "Army Spouse: Toughest Job in the Army" -- or something to that effect. I have seen people mention it but never really looked at it until this morning when my husband brought something to my attention. If you read this page, it is obviously made for laughs. One of the funniest things is people getting all bent out of shape over it!

As I said, my husband brought something to my attention. He showed me a comment or statement, whatever, that someone made on or about that page. Here are a few points this person made to spouses--

*You hold no rank in the military
*You are not eating MREs, sleeping on cots, facing bullets etc
*You do not prepare for promotion boards
*You do not conduct guard duty or CQ duty
*You do not get a paycheck from the Army, your Enlisted spouse does
*You are a wife, you ladies are just along for the ride, you carry NO authority at all
*You do not know tough until you've gone through the training to be a soldier
*Don't make yourself more than you are

Sooooo... where should I start?! This man is correct, I hold no rank in the military, nor do I act like I do. Correct again that I do not eat MREs, sleep on cots, face bullets, etc (but I didn't sign up for it either).

No, I have not prepared for promotion boards personally. As a good wife, I have helped my husband study when he asked me to. I have shared his stress when waiting and shared his joy when he got promoted.

Correct again (this man is on a roll) that I do not conduct guard duty or CQ duty. I do however, cook (or go buy) my husband dinner while he is on duty when he asks me to. And, no, I personally do not get a check from the Army. However, being married, it is OUR money. Just like when I got my mother's life insurance money, it was OURS. And just like when I get paid from my "little job", it is OUR money.

"You don't know tough until you've gone through the training to be a soldier".. yeah, because training to be a soldier is the only thing that can make a person "tough"? And sorry hon, but I have seen some "bitch ass" service members who are anything but tough. (saying that does not mean I don't support our service members, so don't twist my words. I know how people are lol)

I saved this for last -- "You are a wife, you ladies are just along for the ride, you carry NO authority at all" & "Don't make yourself more than you are"--- First, I'd like to say that I hope this man is not married. If he is, my deepest sympathies to his wife.. As a wife, I support my husband in EVERYTHING he does. I am his PARTNER, I HELP him. When he is gone for training or deployment, I am the one who takes care of EVERYTHING here.. the bills, the house, the kids.. if I were just "along for the ride", I wouldn't do shit. I wouldn't care about him and his career, I wouldn't care about the bills or the house.. I would take all the money and be selfish with it. (BTW, I can't remember the last time I actually bought myself anything over $10). Correct though, that I have no authority.. in the military. But when it comes to MY husband and MY household, I have more authority than you care to believe. If I wanted any kind of authority in the military, I would have joined myself. Let's not forget, we shouldn't make ourselves more than we are.. it seems to me this man thinks us "little women" should be barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen, seen and not heard.. Get a clue, dude.

For the record, I do NOT think being an army spouse is the toughest job in the army. BUT I think it's bull that some like to easily dismiss what us good spouses go through and do..

Long Time, No Post!

Well goodness! It's been quite some time since I've blogged...about 8 months. I was going to take a year off from it, but, as you can see, I didn't make it that long. These past 8 months have flew by in a whirlwind! I have some updates to share and a review, but I will get to it this weekend. Busy day ahead of me today! Take care ❤️

My Progress with my Jogging

If you follow me on my more "blog" facebook page - Jamielynn *A Soldier's Angel* - you know I'm on a "journey" to becoming healthier. Now, I have a weightloss goal, but I'm also focusing on NSV (non scale victories). Mainly on breaking my own personal records with jogging.

Last year I was using "jog tracker" to keep track of my miles and times. I wasn't really trying to set any kind of personal records though. Just kind of "going with the flow" and doing what I felt. In March 2012, my average pace was about 20mins/mile. My fastest mile was over 18mins/mile.

In March 2013, I started using the Nike+ app. I LOVE this app!! It keeps track of your fastest times with your mile, 1k, 5k, 10k.. your longest time or distance. AND there are "coaches" who come on with motivational words for you. The Nike+ app keeps track of your average min/miles for each month. Here are my "stats" (you can see the progress):

March 2013: average 18:28/mile
May 2013: average 16:18/mile

I didn't post June 2013 because we're still in June. Some of my other accomplishments are:

May 12, 2013 - fastest 5k - 44:54
May 26, 2013 - fastest 10k - 1:44:40
June 17, 2013 - fastest mile - 11:29

I have been using the 10k trainer app, which is free, and it is really paying off! I also use an interval app to make my own high/low intervals for walking/jogging. I still need to work on my breathing.. for some reason, I'm having trouble with that. My husband has been supportive in trying to help with that.

It's hard enough to travel with children locally, but when you throw in the word vacation it can be a true struggle. There are some tricks to make travel with your little one easier on them and you by default. By planning ahead, you can all make it to your international travel destination as a happy, healthy and cultured family.

Routine Keeps Everyone Going

Changes to schedules are hard on adults, so when making an adjustment to your mini me’s routine you will likely encounter an issue or two. Whenever possible try to emulate their schedule back home, including naps, bedtime, and mealtime. Not napping creates cranky kids that will ruin the afternoon’s plans. Waiting until 7pm to eat dinner is also a bad idea. Also make sure your little one gets healthy snacks throughout the day.

Ziploc Bags Are Your Friend

Think how much you use Ziploc bags at home and multiply your needs when traveling. Pack your essential goods for kids in individual bags, like first aid, extra clothes, wipes and diapers. That way you can take out just what you need when you need it, and not drag a huge bag into the airplane bathroom. Bringing them with you will also give you the opportunity to clean your kids up before you arrive at your destination. Bring empty bags with you in your luggage as well, for needs that show up along the road.

Kid Accommodations

Picking the right hotel or resort accommodations when traveling with kids is crucial. Amenities that you may have neglected in the past are now essential, such as a fridge for storing bottles or a microwave for warming up leftovers. Vacations are fun but they can also be a hassle without the necessities of home. Look for family friendly lodging to avoid going without. Kid friendly resorts provide entertainment for the whole family and are a great option to consider. My family of five found a great Honolulu hotel when traveling to Hawaii that had luxurious amenities and kids meals at every dining venue! With all the options out there, you don’t have to sacrifice quality when looking for family fun.

Child-Proof Your Tech for Their Use

Load your iPad or other device with educational apps to keep your kids entertained. Between these games and a favorite movie they can be happily and quietly engaged on any flight or car ride. You can child-proof them as well so they can only access what you allow, protecting them and the device.

Many volunteer opportunities will also give you the chance to network with others who may assist you in finding gainful employment.

Myth #4: As former military personnel, you are only able to take orders from others, not take initiative to develop your own business.

Truth: The ability to receive and follow direct orders is only one of the many skills you honed during your time of service. The U.S. Small Business Administration recently launched a program to educate and assist military veterans who are interested in becoming entrepreneurs. If owning your own business is something you are passionate about, take a look into this awesome program and follow your dreams!

The "I have it harder than you" Card -- really?

I received an inbox on my army wives fan page ( *Army Wives Do It With Hooah* ) from someone who is OBVIOUSLY just trying to twist some panties. So, instead of posting it directly on my page, like I normally do, I decided to address it here and then let others give their input.

Here is the message:

I have a few questions of my own for "Tony" -- How do you know how ALL female spouses with newborns act when their S/O is deployed? Do you know ALL female spouses or are you just going off of the typical bashing you see and participate in on the many FB pages designed to put spouses down? What exactly are YOU looking for with this inbox? Are you looking for sympathy b/c you're a disabled vet? Are you looking for a pat on the back b/c you have done all this yourself? Well, let me give it to you..

First and foremost, thank you for your service. I'm sorry to hear that you're a disabled vet, and I honestly mean that from the bottom of my heart. I applaud you for accomplishing all that you have when there are so many others who wouldn't have been strong enough to do so.. but...

What's easy for you, may not be easy for others. EVERYONE handles situations differently. There are a lot of female spouses who have multiple kids under the age of 5 and work and go to school.. and I'm sure some are disabled vets like you. What would you say to those, who are in your similar circumstance, who don't think it's easy?

Even for those who only have one child, we'll say a newborn since that's what you brought up, you don't know if it's easy for them. You don't know if they suffer from PPD (post-partum depression), or something else. Maybe they have medical problems that they deal with..maybe the child has medical problems.. maybe they become depressed and feel their world crashing around them b/c they find out their deployed spouse cheated on them.. maybe, just maybe, not everyone has your resiliency..

Why do people always have to play the "I have it harder than you" card? or the "I'm better than you" card? Everyone goes through different things and everyone needs to remember that things are not always as they seem...

My 1st 5K - Susan G. Komen - 4/13/2013

For those who have been following me and reading up on my blog and pages, you know I've been trying to get healthier. My neighbor ((shout out to Susan!!)) has been a great encouragement. I shared with her some of my problems, like I have a hard time making exercise a habit. She told me to set a goal, something to work towards..she suggested a 5K.

About 2 months ago, my friend Kim invited me to her 5K event -- she wanted to get a team to do the 5K in Savannah, GA. This was perfect timing for me! I gladly joined! My husband has supported my efforts and got me some new sneakers and the Nike+ sensor for my shoes. I've had them for about a month and have already recorded 69.83 miles!!

Yesterday was the Susan G. Komen 5K and my goal was to just DO IT.. I wasn't worried about time or anything. I just wanted to be there, showing my support and doing my part. Many of my followers know that my mother died from cancer, not breast cancer, but still. So this 5K was important to me for several reasons. I enjoyed the 5K immensely! The ladies I walked with were great -- the atmosphere was great -- the energy and excitement for the entire event was so overwhelming that I took a nap later that day when I was home! I haven't taken a nap in months lol

With help of some wonderful people, I was also able to raise over $200 for the 5K! I have set a goal for next years 5K -- I want to form a team of at least 15 people and get at least $1000 raised between us all. I'm going to start planning for it in the Fall. This is motivation to keep going and keep doing what I've been doing.

HealthCare Reform - Where Does it Start?

I saw a picture quote on FB this morning that really jumped out at me. It makes so much sense! --

First let's define reform - to put or change into an improved form or condition, to amend or improve by change of form or removal of faults or abuses, to put an end to "an evil" by enforcing or introducing a better method or course of action.

I honestly believe that healthcare costs wouldn't be so high or so needed if people took better care of their bodies. One of the easiest ways to take care of your body is to watch what you put into it! The correlation between what we eat and the diseases we (as people) have are astounding. Let's use children as an example.

Since 1980, obesity prevalence among children and adolescents (2-19 yrs old) has almost tripled. This is no surprise when you factor in the rise of fast food chains and the convenience of unhealthy, but good tasting, food. There are additives that are put in food that literally cause you to become addicted and to keep coming back for more. Reliance on fast food, processed snacks and sugary drinks are killing us.

With the rise in childhood obesity, there has also been a rise in diseases and other problems among children... diabetes, asthma, emotional and social problems. Being an overweight child increases the chances of being an overweight adult, which in turn increases the risk of high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and heart problems.

If we eat healthier, we can (in the long run) begin to reverse the rise of these conditions, which in turn will reduce the amount of healthcare and medication we need. In my opinion, the best way to start is definitely in your kitchen.. and with our children.

Getting Healthy - I'm on my way!!!

One of my New Year's Resolutions this year was to get healthier. Some of my readers may remember me writing about my thyroid problem before. It has really made losing weight hard. During my husbands 4th deployment I had lost some weight but then my medication was "off" and I gained about 20lbs in 2months. Very discouraging!!

I have decided that this year, I WILL NOT let myself get discouraged. No matter what is thrown at me, I WILL push through and keep going. One thing I have noticed with all my reading on weight loss, exercise, healthy eating and the fad diets (which I do not recommend) is that you have to be consistent! I use to find any and every excuse to not exercise. When I had my my breast reduction my last excuse went out the window. I do something EVERY day, even if it is just going for a walk.

I've been doing cardio and some strength training. I've made my own "workouts" to do at home and my husband is teaching me the correct things to do in the weight room at the gym. Here are 2 of my own "workouts" I made:

Being consistent with my exercising is only a part of it. I have also been being consistent with healthier eating. Adding more fruits and veggies and watching my portions. I use "My Fitness Pal" (find me - jamielynn629) to keep track of my calories and add in my exercising. It helps me to be accountable. I also use "RunKeeper" to track my walking/jogging. When I started out, I couldn't jog for 30 seconds w/o feeling like I wanted to puke. I recently jogged on my treadmill at 4mph for 5 minutes!! Do you have any idea the pride I felt?! I've been setting goals for myself that don't include just weight loss.. my next goal is to jog for 7 minutes straight.

This week I'm going to set some goals for number of squats and push-ups to complete each day for 2wks and then up it. I'm also going to set a goal for number of miles to complete for 2wks and then up it.

Having the support of my husband and friends helps tremendously! When you have positive influences and reinforcement, it makes attaining my goals so much easier. I've been following some fitness type profiles on Instagram (you can follow me at - jamielynn1027) and I've been "liking" more fitness and weight loss inspiring pages on FB. Keeping positive people, quotes and posts at my finger tips has been amazing for my attitude.

I started using "My Fitness Pal" in December in 2012 - here was my profile this past week -

I'm beyond proud of myself and my friends who have been changing their lives for the better as well. My overall energy and happiness has skyrocketed. I have a ways to go, but I have no doubt that I'll make it. This is what a happy girl looks like -

" In my novel, "Off Switch," which addresses both P.T.S.D. among soldiers and veterans and the pandemic suicide rate that is FINALLY getting more attention in the media, I address two issues in particular which are leading to the staggering rate of suicide among our heroes, currently reported as 22 each day, though those numbers would be much higher if the D.O.D. actually included the Army Reservists and National Guardsmen who commit suicide in their count as well. These two main culprits I address are severe substance abuse (mismanagement of medication the VA and Army hospitals call it) and toxic leadership.

The first issue is quite self-explanatory, but the second, not so much. In laymen’s terms, toxic leadership involves abusive leaders- both physically and emotionally abusive- though we mostly see it in the form of ‘hands off, no physical evidence provable’ emotional abuse, like constant hazing, even in combat zones where it is uncalled for and does NOTHING to promote the mission. This often leaves scars- a sense of anti-authority- in the abused service member that is long to fade, if it ever does, which in turn leads to the inability to trust and extreme alienation from others.
However, there are great, competent, motivating leaders within the ranks of the U.S. armed forces who have sacrificed not just their enlistment terms, or one weekend a month and two weeks a year to do the right thing as far as leadership goes, but who have committed their entire being to this cause. One such leader is First Sergeant Byron Humphrey of the United States Army.

I first knew First Sergeant Humphrey as ‘Drill Sergeant’ Humphrey back in infantry school and A.I.T. at Fort Benning, Georgia. I had enlisted in the National Guard at the ripe age of thirty three and was actually thirty four by the time I made it to basic, and in spite of my years, which should have led to a more mature insight that often brings calm in spite of oncoming storms, I was terrified! I knew it would be hard, but I feared that because of my age, that my prime was well behind me and that after the Army ‘broke me down’ in the first half the cycle, there would be nothing left to ‘build back up.’

These fears intensified when I laid eyes on the rock of a man who was to be my platoon’s Drill Sergeant. He entered the foyer once we’d marched to the reception area, jaw tight, eyes level with the horizon. His chest was bulging though he was making no effort to stick it out. His shoulders were broad and as square as his jaw, and he had an air of confidence like I’ve rarely seen. I remember thinking I’d made the biggest mistake of my life, and that no; I hadn’t enlisted at nearly middle age, because this decision, for me, was going to make the mid-point of my life age 17. I was going to die.

And then he spoke.
“I’m not a screamer,” he said when he first addressed us. “I don’t yell. I don’t punish people for crimes they don’t commit. We are at war, and within one year of the time you leave here, ninety percent of you will be in either Iraq or Afghanistan. It is my job to train you and instill in you the necessary skills you’ll need to come back. Follow me.”

As he led us to our bay, where we would begin learning the rules and start our training, my fears subsided, but my respect for this man who I’d just met was elevated. This was not the screaming, red faced dictator type I’d seen on movies like “Full Metal Jacket.” Was I in the right place?

Over the course of the next fourteen weeks I would watch as Drill Sergeant Humphrey put his money where his mouth was. Not only did he train us beyond a point which few of us thought we could go, but he was right there training with us. He too was in his thirties, yet he could run circles around every man in our platoon, many of who were nearly half his age, do more pushups and sit-ups than any of us, and shoot any weapon we shouldered better than the best man among us. He was a super soldier, while at the same time performing all the required tasks and responsibilities as the super leader he also was.

He remained true to his word the entire cycle. He didn’t scream unnecessarily. He didn’t punish people when there was no need. He motivated the incorrigible, quickened the obtainment of maturity in so many of the youth, and helped old geezers like me find gears we never knew we had, which enabled us not to return to our primes, but get closer to them than any other means I would have imagined possible.
Sure, there’s always “that guy.” And we had “that guy” who challenged Drill Sergeant Humphrey. He had grown up, fatherless, in the inner city and had been involved in gang activity, and at the age of eighteen, the Army represented this young man’s last stop before the train reached the station. Yet, even in dealing with this young man, Drill Sergeant Humphrey kept his cool, was reserved, and didn’t yell and scream and punish the group for anything stupid this individual was doing. Rather, he delegated authority with the wisdom of a corporate C.E.O. or a competent Commander in Chief.

He took another soldier, one who was very serious, very disciplined- the exact opposite of this young man- and paired the two together as battle buddies. Oh, the laughs we had over that, when “Private Serious” would take “Private Dirt Bag” down to the foyer when our grueling , sixteen hour days were through, and put him through more, private, battle buddy instruction; drill and ceremony, memorization of weapon mechanics, etc. By the end of the cycle, “Private Dirt Bag” had become one of the most squared away soldiers in our platoon, and “Private Serious” had learned to lighten up and laugh, and the two of them had become great friends.
And Drill Sergeant Humphrey had never raised his voice.

I’d come from a strong athletic background, having been a state champion miler in high school and running track and cross country in college, but those years were a third of my lifetime behind me, and I thought I’d never see anything remotely close to them again.

Drill Sergeant Humphrey did not see things this way.
He motivated me, pushed me, and pulled the magic back out of me that I thought had long ago died. As a result, I lead not only my platoon in P.T. but the entire brigade during my cycle. I scored a 360 on the final P.T. test (which has a maximum score of 300) of basic training, having done, in two minutes, 95 pushups, 100 sit-ups, and then running a timed two miles in 11:30. Yes, my body did these things at the age of thirty four, but it was Drill Sergeant Humphrey’s motivation and leadership style that made my mind realize it was possible.

At the time, the highest P.T. scoring soldier in basic training was often rewarded with a trip to airborne school for their performance. There were two slots available for this in our platoon and I remember how happy I was thinking that I would be going to airborne school and fulfilling a lifelong fantasy of so many who have ever served; jumping out of planes and earning my wings. However, the Army didn’t want to “waste the slot” on me because I was a National Guardsman. I understood their position. I would not be going to an airborne unit. I would never jump again. I would become only what we call a five jump chump.

Drill Sergeant Humphrey, when informing me that I might not make it to airborne because of my guard status, looked me in the eyes and asked me if I really wanted it, and if I promised to work as hard there as I had in basic if he could pull it off. I told him yes, and he spent endless hours over the next few days, in lengthy meetings with people way above him in rank, and he finally got me the slot to airborne school. As he told me, “It isn’t about what unit you are going to. It’s about what you did here at basic, and you kicked a##!” I went to Airborne School, I became a five jump chump, and I got my wings. And this is not so much because I “kicked a##,” but because my leader also kicked a##. He not only motivated me to such a high level of performance, but he also went to bat for me when I needed him.

I’ve stayed in touch with First Sergeant Humphrey, first minimally and professionally as my short lived, one enlistment career in the military progressed (I’ll always remember the times he checked in with me while I was in Iraq to make sure I was okay), and a little more personally now that I am a civilian once again. When I found out he’d made it to the rank of First Sergeant, arguably the most respected position, enlisted or commissioned, in the entire Army, I was not surprised and I was as happy for him as I’ve ever been for myself when good things have come my way.
First Sergeant Humphrey has deployed more than half a dozen times. He lost his best friend in Iraq. The grueling life of the full time combat soldier who is always on a constant deployment cycle has taken drastic tolls on his personal life and has cost him a marriage. He could have chosen the saner, more stable, and certainly the safer lifestyle of the civilian sector at any of the numerous times that he has been up for re-enlistment, yet he has stepped forward, repeatedly, in spite of his personal losses, to lead the way for others.

I’ve drawn on many of the lessons I learned during those fourteen weeks under Drill Sergeant Humphrey’s care at Fort Benning. I remembered the lessons during the tough times in Iraq, and I’ve drawn from them in the private sector since. The biggest lesson First Sergeant Humphrey has taught me is that your age, your competition- none of the circumstances around you- matter in determining the outcome of your situation. It is your will; the indomitable will that is within each of us. We just need to learn how to pull it out.

First Sergeant Byron Humphrey taught me how to dig deep and find my will, and he continues to do so for others as a First Sergeant in the United States Army. There is no doubt in my mind that the day will come when he is doing the same for the First Sergeants under his leadership when he becomes a Sergeant Major! "

Pink Zebra Product Review

First, I'd love to thank Mrs. Mary Grosh for asking me to do a review and sending me some "sprinkles" to try out. I asked Mary to tell me a little bit about herself and why she started selling "Pink Zebra" and this is what she told me -

Along with smelling great, "Pink Zebra" is simple to use too! All you have to do is scoop it out of the jar and put it into the simmering pot ((or in my case, my warmer)) - the sprinkles melt and release the scent. I used a scoop and a half in my warmer in my bathroom and left it on from about 8am to 8pm for 3 days before I had to replace it. The one in my bedroom still releases scent because I only turn it on about an hour or two before I go to bed and then I shut it off when I go to sleep. Overall, I was pleased with the scents and how long they last.

University of Alaska ROTC - Thanks Julie!!

One of my friends on Facebook, Miss Julie VanHouten, works at the University of Alaska with the ROTC program. She is constantly posting about it and shows tremendous pride in the program!! After doing a little "research" I see why!

From the University of Alaska "about" section -

"The primary mission of the ROTC program at the University of Alaska is the development of Cadet into Army Leaders.

Army ROTC (Reserve Officers' Training Corps) is one of the best leadership courses in the country and is a part of our proud American heritage that has molded many fine young men and women serving the prestigious officer corps of the U.S. Army.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks is home to the Nanook Battalion. Currently there are about 40 cadets in the Unit. Our unit earned First place ranking among all units in the Brigade last year, and was top 15% nationwide."

This program began in 1922 and is one of the oldest in the country that has been producing officers for the US Army since 1927. Many of the officers who came from UAF have went on to gain senior leadership in the military, become congressmen, state legislators, judges and corporate executives!

The mascot for the UAF is the Nanook - an Inupiat Eskimo word for the polar bear. Nanook means King of the North.

It seems to me that this is a GREAT step for those who are looking to enter the army after high school. My oldest, who is 13, has talked of joining the army and being like his father and when the time comes I will definitely look into this if he is still interested.

Julie was so kind to me and sent me some UAF ROTC gear! She sent me 2 shirts, a sweatshirt, a water bottle, a hat and some pens. My husband confiscated my water bottle, my daughter took one of the shirts (it was like an XS lol) and my oldest son took the gray ARMY ROTC shirt and my pens! All I'm left with is the sweatshirt and hat. I haven't worn the sweatshirt yet, but I wear the hat on sunny days when I go out walking ----

"Dear Civilian Girl" - A little rant =)

So, this little "tid bit" was shared in my army wife group on Facebook. I've seen this floating around the internet before and each time I see it, I get more annoyed. This is suppose to be some "letter" to civilian girls from the military girlfriend/wife.

One pet peeve of mine is people telling others how they can/should feel or trying to downplay someone's feelings and emotions simply b/c they aren't in a relationship with someone in the military.

My "comments" on this will be RED.

Dear Civilian Girl,
(unless you're a service member, you're a civilian too sweetie)
You complain your boyfriend has worked late all week and you have barely seen him.
I look forward to the 2wks a year we spend together.
(why can't she complain? she can't miss her man? time with her man is just as important to her as it is to you..and 2wks a year? exaggeration much?)
You complain because he doesn't call you enough.
My heart is thankful for the 15sec phone call I got last Tuesday in the middle of the night.
(maybe her complaint is valid.. and I see TONS of military s/o's complaining about not enough communication, and it has nothing to do with training or deployments)
You whine to your friends about how much you miss him already and he is on a 2 day trip with his parents.
I won't see him for another 10months.
(well, let's pull out some cheese to go with YOUR "whine".. who cares? missing someone is missing someone.. maybe they are in that new puppy love stage)
You don't feel like making love tonight because you're tired.
We will stay up all night because we don't know when the last one will be.
(puh-lease! LOL we both have our "too tired" moments and anyone who says they don't is a liar.. I can't even remember the last time we stayed up all night together.. no soldier who has been working all day is gonna stay up all night to have sex when they have to get up at 5am to do it all over again.. maybe once in a blue moon, but I'm willing to bet it's rare lol)
Your boyfriend belongs to you.
Mine belongs to the government.
(well, YOURS CHOSE to sign on that line.. just sayin')
Your boyfriend is training for his game next weekend.
Mine is trained to kill.
(so? there are plenty of soldiers who play games lol..just because yours is trained to "kill" that makes him better? No. Don't even get me started on that one.. )
It's just not practical for you to drive an hour to see him every weekend during school.
He spends $700 on plane tickets just to see me for 2 days.
(You are complaining about her not driving to see him, yet you aren't going to see yours either..he is coming to you... and if this is during school, which I will assume is college, maybe it isn't practical for her to go every weekend..maybe she has studying and responsibilities to do, maybe she doesn't have the money to go EVERY weekend..)
You hate hanging up the phone when you talk to him.
My heart breaks because I won't talk to him for another 10 days.
(again..who cares? she is allowed to dislike the end of phone calls just like you)
Your boyfriend can call in sick when he is tired or not feeling well.
My man works no matter what.
(Again, that is a choice "your man" made. He knew what he was getting into. Why are you having a pissing contest over something not even about you? lol Oh, and just b/c he is at work, don't mean he's working lol)
You don't trust him so you follow him places to see if he is telling the truth.
I have no choice but to trust him and even then I trust him with my life.
(Trusting someone not to cheat on you is in no way comparable to trusting someone with your life, IMO... and I have seen tons of military s/o's who don't trust their man.. him being a service member has nothing to do with trust.)
You check your phone, see a missed call from him and decide to call him back when you're not busy.
I see a missed call and cry because I don't know when he will call again.
(this just sounds a bit pathetic.. even when my husband was deployed the first time, I didn't cry b/c I missed a call.. then again, I got letters just about every day.. it seriously sounds like the person who wrote this had no life other than what revolved around him)

I refuse to take his dog tags off and not a day goes by that I don't have them on.
(I'd rather have a fancy necklace.. his dog tags? come on.. I've seen some cute dog tag necklaces that have pics on them or cute sayings.. but his actual dog tags? No. I NEVER once wore them. I don't want the ID tags that they use to in the event of his death hanging around my neck.. it's morbid to me.. and HE is suppose to have them on him at all times, not you.)
You say you miss him.

I loved the smell of the applicator! It was fresh and energizing. If anyone does aromatherapy, you know what I mean. The pack comes with 4 applicators. You do one applicator every 3 days. You HAVE to drink at least half your body weight in water during the days you are "wrapping". The reason you do one applicator every 3 days is because it continues to work for 3 days. So that means you need to drink all that water during those 3 days. Before I started my wraps I googled to see how to get the most of my wraps. Before I applied my wraps, I washed the area with natural soap and water and then used a loofah to gently scrub over the area to get the blood flowing and open up my pores some. Then I applied the wrap and waited my 45mins. When my time was up, I rubbed in the excess "gel" and went on about my day with my water in hand.

I took measurements around the bottom of my rib cage, around my belly button area and around my hips. I did them before each wrap. The facial applicator also comes in a 4 pack but I was only sent one to try out. I really enjoyed this! Especially because I love my facial masks (peel away and mud masks). After just using the one applicator, my face smoother and tighter. It smells just as fresh and energizing as the Ultimate Body Applicator. *funny moment* I came out of the bathroom with the applicator on my face and startled my husband.. "What in the....?!! Warn a brotha before you come out of the bathroom looking like that!" LOL He cracks me up!

I mixed the Greens each day with orange juice in the morning. They changed the color of my juice a little, but I couldn't taste them, probably because the Greens have an orange flavor. I definitely noticed a difference in how I felt while using the Greens. I had a lot more energy!! Which proved to me I need to eat more healthy stuff lol I only have one tip for those who are new to using the Greens ---- make sure you are near a bathroom the first few days!! They really, how should I say it.. uh, get things going =)

Overall, I really enjoyed these products and I can't wait to try more. There are so more to choose from. From my understanding, they work best when used together.

Now, some may look at the products and think they are expensive and in my opinion, they can be, depending on what you want. However, there is something they have called the "Loyal Customer Price". You save up to 45% on your product, it auto-ships and you can customize it. It's a 3month agreement basically. For example, the Ultimate Body Applicator is $99, but if you choose to do it as a "loyal customer" it is $59. Rose Parade Float that honored Military Working Dogs & their Handlers!

I received the sweetest thing in my email from "Natural Balance Pet Foods"! They brought to my attention a float that was in the Rose Parade on New Year's Day. This specific float honored military working dogs and their handlers.

From email -
" The float itself featured a replica of "The Military Working Dog Teams National Monument", which will be located in San Antonio, TX this fall. This is the first time military dogs will be recognized with such a high honor! We are proud to be one of the companies who sponsored this important monument."

Now, the really touching part, in my opinion, was that during the parade, they reunited Army Sergeant First Class Eric Pazz with his wife and son, three months before his discharge date from Afghanistan.

Holidays 2012 - Christmas & New Years!

The holidays are always soooo exhausting! I feel like the older I get, the longer that drive to New Jersey feels.

We got left around 3am and a 12hr drive took us about 15 to 16hrs b/c of the traffic. It was nuts! We saw an accident that was pretty bad on 95N. The top of the car had to be cut off in order to get the people out. Horrible. Other than that, the ride was alright. Alexis didn't get sick and the kids didn't kill each other.. my husband was entertaining, as always. I love driving with him lol On our way home, it took us 12hrs b/c the traffic was non-existent.

All in all, we had a great visit with family and friends! The kids made cookies with Nana and Uncle Griffin and had so much fun doing it! DeeJay and Richie were in charge of cookie cutters, removing the cookies from the oven and taking the cookies off the cookie sheets. Alexis was in charge of sprinkles lol

Christmas morning was fun! My Mother-in-law chose to do something different with us this year. She gave us each a card with a name on it. We had to go to the tree and get that person's presents and give them to them. Alexis got me and was so excited to give me all my gifts... my baby! Here is one of my fave gifts I got -

Next up was New Years Eve! This was our 3rd year in a row celebrating with my in-laws at this "country club" they go to. Darrell wore his Dress Blues and looked as sharp as ever... you would think some of those women lost their drunk minds... One was 2mins away from a bitch slap lol .. it was a fun night though.. we ate, we drank, danced (well, he danced and I tried to dodge dancing lol) and kissed when the clock struck midnight. The photobooth was fun too!

I got to see both my Grandmoms, Aunt Sharon, Uncle Carl and my cousin Josh... I also got to spend some time with one of my oldest and bestest friends, Dawn. Love that gal! So even though going back to visit is exhausting, it's totally worth it!

While browsing Twitter a few months ago with the hashtag "wife", I came across a Twitter user who promotes wives and marriage. Her tweets were encouraging and uplifting to me, especially during difficult moments I had.

Personally, I think Dana's creations are wonderful! They promote wives and can easily be dressed up or down. Dana sent me a shirt a few weeks ago and I wore it one day during our marriage retreat. We went to Downtown Disney and a lady in the pretzel place commented positively on my shirt, she loved it! I also took a pic with The Hulk =) He told me he like it too ;)
