Washington DC’s incredibly brutal ILSA, have announced they will be releasing their sophomore LP titled ‘Intoxicantation’ via Baltimore’s A389 Recordings.

Formed in 2008 ILSA self released a demo CDR before fine-tuning their sound and unleashing the incredible ‘Tutti Il Colori Del Buio’ LP (Contagion Releasing) which received rave reviews and was followed up by a split 12″ with Finland’s Hooded Menace.

Combining an obsession with 1970′s foreign horror films, and a sound that is equally devastating on record as in a live environment, ILSA is sure to please fans of Grief, Amebix, and label mates Seven Sisters Of Sleep.

Listen to the track ‘Blood Rituals’ taken from their LP ‘Tutti Il Colori Del Buio’ available via Contagion Releasing:

The band is booked with Kevin Bernsten (Developing Nations) over the next month, and the album artwork is currently being assembled by the drummer Joshy and vocalist Orion (whom have previously collaborated of the band’s previous artwork).

Stay tuned for updated information on the release of ILSA’s new LP ‘Intoxicantation’ on A389 Recordings.

On a sunny sunday morning in October last year we invited close to 30 of our friends to our practice space in Ghent for the shoot of the first ever Rise And Fall music video. We didn’t invite them to act like they were the crowd or anything, no, we invited them to be Rise And Fall.

From 8 in the morning ’till sunset, footage was shot of our friends pretending they were Rise And Fall. It resulted in 8 hours of footage which was later distilled into a 112 seconds long video by director Mathieu Vandekerckhove who also filmed the whole project. All this hard work, and sweat (we kept the heat at full blast in our practice space), resulted in a visual and auditive whirlwind that will commence after you hit play. Turn it up loud, watch it full screen and in HD if possible! We wanna thank everyone in the video and especially Mr. Vandekerckhove who spent hours on end editing this bastard.

Look for members of Oathbreaker, Congress, Hessian, Reproach, Kindred, Amenra, Kingdom, Blind To Faith, Insult, Inhume, The Rott Childs, Kabul Golf Club, Kapitan Korsakov, Drums Are for parades, Minor Thieves, Vermin Twins, Officer Jones, Morrocan, Control Records, Rhythm To The Madness, Justice, Filler, Joshua’s Song,… all bands we advise you to check out and find out what’s going on in Belgium in 2012. Thank you.

Are The Menzingers ready for the next big step or was Chamberlain Waits the best record the band had in them? Questions which On The Impossible Past, their Epitaph debut , answers with YES and NO! Yes, the band sure made another big step incorporating more alternative rock in their punk and No, Chamberlain Waits was only the bridge between great and greatness.

From the get go of ‘Good Things’ On The Impossible Past is 100 percent Menzingers, only with better vocals, more memorable melodies and lyrics everyone will be singing back and forth this year. Where Dead To Me never again reached the level of Little Brother, The Menzingers just keep on writing better and better records. Maybe the fact this band doesn’t change members every month does pay off.

On The Impossible Past isn’t all gold and glory though. The slower paced ‘Ava House’ is the weakest link on the record. It’s slow pace is kind of reminiscent of Gaslight Anthem songs like ‘We Did It When We Were Young’ but where that track actually builds up to a certain point, ‘Ava House’ keeps going in that same slow pace.

If ‘Ava House’ is the weakest link than ‘Mexican Guitars’ is the better than good track. I know it’s early in the year but I doubt if there will be another song that can compete for the title punkrock song of the year. Well maybe ” Nice Things’ one of the last songs on this record.

If I have to compare On The Impossible Past with any other record it would be Bouncing Souls Anchors Aweigh. Both records, in my opinion, have a kind of dark melancholy over them. They just sound like classics you keep returning to year after year.

I’m old enough to remember the time that you could buy any Epitaph release knowing it would be quality punkrock from start to finish. Though the label has broadened their roster a lot, it’s good to see that they still have that inner gut feeling of what good punkrock is. They already proved it by picking up Off With Their Heads and The Menzingers is just another example of this.

A couple of years before everyone hailed The Gaslight Anthem as Bruce Springsteen’s ideal sons the same thing was said about The Hold Steady. Somehow the band never managed to gain the same status as The Gaslight Anthem has today, being able to sell out the bigger venues in Europe and playing some of the most established festivals.

2010 wasn’t the best year for the band with multi-instrumentalist Franz Nicolay departing just before recording Heaven Is Whenever to pursue his solo-career. Most reviews for that record weren’t as raving as they were for previous records and some predicted the end of The Hold Steady. 2011 saw front man Craig Finn doing a tribute to The Replacements and entering the studio for his first solo record Clear Heart, Full Eyes.

One of the most important aspects of The Hold Steady, to me, has always been Finn’s lyrics in which he struggles with religion, sings about the life of common American losers, hardcore matinees and how Youth Of Today and 7 Seconds taught him some of the most valuable lessons.

‘Apollo Bay’ the first song of Clear Heart, Full Eyes sounds like something new and different if compared to The Hold Steady:

Still with songs like ‘When No One’s Watching and ‘No Future’ is back on familiar ground musically and lyrically quoting Johnny Rotten and namedropping Freddie Mercury.

As this is a solo album the music is less intense and sharp than that of The Hold Steady, yet Finn never goes for the whole acoustic approach, there’s a band backing him up all the way. And that’s the only big ‘problem’ I’ve with this record, some songs would have even been better with a Hold Steady approach, I think. But that doesn’t mean Clear Heart is less good than the material Finn released with his band. If anything one can only hope that The Hold Steady will come out rocking and blazing on their new record as Finn seems to have find the right space for his more introspect stuff. If that happens everyone’s a winner.

About hardcore, about punk and everything in between. About you and me.

This week (the 20th of February) it was Kurt Cobain’s 45th birthday, if he still lived that is… I might be a huge Nirvana fan, but days like that don’t do much for me. I didn’t even remember until I saw some posts on Facebook passing by (Man, I would have missed a lot of birthdays if not for Facebook haha). Anyway, as usual you would see some “I Miss The Kurtz” posts (come on…), the “Junkie” posts (let’s face it, he was), but the funniest thing to me is when people say Nirvana wasn’t a punk band. I don’t care much about labeling music, but I couldn’t disagree more with a statement like that. So I decided to write this column. Worst-case scenario? A nice list of interesting Nirvana moments and above all I get to ramble about Nirvana again. Yay!

When I talk about punkrock, hardcore or whatever you call it, I have to say it has always been more about the attitude than about the music to me. And while Nirvana had plenty of punk songs (Territorial Pissings, Tourettes, Stay Away etc.), attitude wise they were definitely more punkrock than your average punk / hardcore band. Please let the walking Nirvana encyclopedia (me) enlighten you with some examples:

The 1992 MTV Video Awards incident

MTV demanded Nirvana to perform “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, but the band preferred to play new songs “Rape Me” and “Tourette’s”. MTV wasn’t feeling it and was threatening to throw them off the show if they didn’t play “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and also mentioned “repercussions down the line”. Which could mean a boycot of Nirvana and/or the people they worked with. That’s how it works people. Finally, a couple of hours before the show they gave them the choice to either play “Smells Like Teen Spirit” or go with “Lithium”. The band accepted (feeling like whores). But during the liveshow Nirvana started the first couple of chords and lines of “Rape Me” anyway. The MTV bosses were horrified, just as they were ready to break in with a commercial the band started playing “Lithium”. It also looks like Krist Novoselic is saluting. I always liked this little moment of rebellion. If you keep watching until the end there’s some great moments too: you’ll see Krist tossing his bass in the air (because the amplifier stopped working) and catching it with his head and Dave calling out for Axl (Rose), but that’s a whole different story haha.

Playbacking at Top Of The Pops

The network said they had to playback their, at the moment number one, hit “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and the band didn’t want to do that (who would want to do that anyway, playbacking is bullshit) so they asked to play live. When that was refused they decided to have a little fun with the song. Aside from them all obviously playbacking, Kurt changed the lyrics a bit: “Load up on drugs and kill your friends”, “And for this gift I’ve been incest” etc. and sang the whole song a lot lower than usual. In the Napster days this song was usually labeled “Morrisey version”. Anyway, another great moment of rebellion.

Nirvana on the Jonathan Ross show

Another case of the network asking them to play a song and them deciding differently. In this case they were asked to play “Lithium” live on the Jonathan Ross show. He even announced “Lithium” but instead they went full force into Territorial Pissings and trashed the set when they were done. Jonathan Ross reacted to that pretty classy saying the band were also available for children birthday parties and Bar Mitzvah’s.

Making out on Saturday Night Live

To piss off all the homophobes Krist made out with Dave & Kurt live on television. How’s that?

Corporate magazines still suck

For a 1992 Rolling Stone cover story the photographers arranged to have the band wear suits to illustrate their sudden success. But according to Mark Seliger (the photographer) Kurt really wasn’t into the idea. “He didn’t want to be publicized. He didn’t want anything but to be true to his fans and to the music.” Instead Kurt showed up with a t-shirt with the text: “Corporate Magazines Still Suck.”

In Utero

In Utero, aside from probably being my favorite Nirvana record, was in a way an attempt to shake off the “He’s the one/Who likes all our pretty songs/And he likes to sing along/And he likes to shoot his gun/But he knows not what it means” (In Bloom) fans. “I have a feeling that with our next record we’re going to lose a lot of our audience” Kurt said. They picked Steve Albini to record with, who wasn’t exactly known for his subtle and slick mixes. As a result the label refused to release In Utero at first. In the end a comprise was made and they let Scott Litt remix and master 3 songs (and added an extra acoustic guitar and some backgroundvocals to Heart Shaped Box). Label’s gotta have their hitsingle right?

Oh and here’s some bonus hardcore / punk related Nirvana trivia:
Krist Novoselic wearing a SSD shirt

During the MTV’s Live & Loud show in ’93 (can we get the full show on DVD please?) you can see Krist Novoselic rocking a nice SSD shirt.
Punk records in Kurt Cobain’s top 50 albums

Kurt Cobain had MDC, Black Flag, Bad Brains, Void/Faith, Rites Of Spring and Fear amongst others in his all time top 50 albums. Check http://www.angelfire.com/rock3/nirvana81/kurttop.htm (Angelfire? Man… those were the days) for the full list.
Dave Grohl & Pat Smear played in hardcore bands

Guess everyone knows this, but still: Pat Smear played in the Germs and Dave Grohl was in Scream.

So yeah, Nirvana were pretty punkrock. Although they described themselves like this:

A long-time participant in the NYHC scene, Dijon began thinking about a new band in early 2011. Dijon approached producer Dean Baltulonis (Sick Of It All, Agnostic Front, Madball) about a new project. Looking to find a vocalist, Baltulonis suggested Justice Tripp (Trapped Under Ice). The two approached Tripp at the annual Black N’ Blue Bowl and discussed working together. With Tripp agreeing to team up, Dijon reached out to Breakdown bandmate Lou Medina (also of All Out War, District 9) to play drums.

The band joined up with Baltulonis at Wild Arctic Recording Studio in NYC to record their debut album, Crush. Right from the start, the band was firing on all cylinders. “This is the first time I’ve given someone free reign to produce my music. I was in good hands with Dean. He was coming up with some awesome sounds and pushing us all to the limit to get the best performances out of us,” Dijon says.
