Cornerstone – Music Story

Does nurturing a hidden all-consuming desire to do away with someone make one a murderer?

Satan wanted to do away with God. But an eternal, all powerful Creator cannot be done away with. When confronted, Satan lied, denying that he wanted God’s demise.¹ He had motive to murder (a lust for power), but lacked means and opportunity. So God set about exposing his heart.

Opportunity: God created a universe where life is mortal, where murder could become rampant, and then entered his creation as a mortal man.

Means: Satan’s agents were the political and religious leaders who rejected Jesus, their Creator.

Murder: Jesus died by crucifixion on a Roman cross.

But God cannot be destroyed, he is immortal. Jesus rose from the dead, conquering death! He offers life beyond the grave to his followers.

From the first century onward Satan has persecuted Jesus’ followers. The Apostle Peter wrote his first epistle to encourage a persecuted church. Eight years ago I composed a song from each of the five chapters in 1 Peter and included 2008 persecution statistics in the videos. Since then the number of Christians facing extreme persecution has more than tripled.²

In the Blue – Music Story

John played the harmonica. He found backing tracks of songs he loved and played along.¹ But there was one song that he couldn’t find a backing track for. So he asked me to play it on my piano and record it for him. He would use the recording as a backing track. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find the sheet music anywhere. I had to tell John that I didn’t have the ability to play the song by ear.

But!

I did find a chord progression for the song. I took the chord progression to my piano, wove a melody around it, and penned lyrics that reflected John’s love of fishing. I sent John a recording of the song.

A few years later I realized the melody and refrain from John’s song would be perfect for a song I was writing based on Philippians 4:6-7. I posted “Surprised by Peace” in my blog in the middle of COVID.²

John died this December. The family contributed photos for a memorial slideshow.³ You can hear John playing the harmonica throughout the photo montage. The last few pictures are accompanied by John playing his harmonica to the recording of this song that I composed for him.

Tempted – Music Story

The Spirit of God led Jesus, the Son of God, to the wilderness to be tempted by the devil, to be tempted just like us.

Challenge #1

God “rained down bread from heaven” [i] to feed the children of Israel when they were hungry in the wilderness. Jesus was hungry in the wilderness.

Shouldn’t God’s Son make bread from stones?
Shouldn’t the Creator feed us when we are hungry?

Challenge #2

Psalm 91 promises that no evil would befall the one who made God his dwelling place. The angels “will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.”[ii] Satan brought Jesus to the highest point of the temple and told him to throw himself down.

Wouldn’t people believe Jesus was God’s Son if God kept him safe?
If he wants us to believe in him, shouldn’t the Creator kept us safe?

Challenge #3

The children of Israel had a choice: “If serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve.”[iii] If Jesus didn’t like God’s way, he could choose Satan’s.

If Jesus bowed down and worshiped Satan, Satan would give him all the kingdoms of the world.
If the Creator doesn’t fulfill our desires, we’ll go elsewhere.

According to Jesus, these three challenges are not valid reasons for rejecting the Creator and refusing to serve and worship him. Jesus can sympathize with our weaknesses, he “has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.”[iv]

I Cry to God for Mercy - Music Story

David was a man after God’s own heart.

1 Samuel records three times when David refused to use his circumstances for personal gain.

God had rejected Saul as king and appointed David in his stead. In a jealous rage Saul sought David’s life. He and his troops chased after David. David and his men hid in the recesses of a cave. When Saul entered the cave alone, David’s men encouraged him to take vengeance on Saul. David refused. Instead, he chose to wait for God to rescue him.

Psalms 142:1-2, 5-6
A maskil of David. When he was in the cave. A prayer.

I cry aloud to the Lord;
I lift up my voice to the Lord for mercy.
I pour out before him my complaint;
before him I tell my trouble.

I cry to you, Lord;
I say, “You are my refuge,
my portion in the land of the living.
Listen to my cry,
for I am in desperate need;
rescue me from those who pursue me”[i]

David was a man after God’s own heart. David and Jesus each refused to become king by disobeying The Ten Commandments:[ii] David refused to murder Saul, Jesus refused to worship Satan.[iii] Both chose to wait for God to rescue them.

Mary & Martha – Music Story

Women flourish where they have the power to publicly and freely sit at Jesus’ feet and listen to him. That power comes from their country’s legal system. It’s a nation’s laws (not an individual’s spirituality or vague sense of kindness to women) that protect women from violence and discrimination.

Laurie Stewart, JD, looks at four major religious worldviews and compares their impact on laws regarding the treatment of women. She asks, “Who or what holds the greatest hope for women?”(1)

Seeds

I have a black thumb. Indoor plants are a problem for me. That’s why I have silk flowers in my house. They look realistic. But they don’t require water, don’t wilt, and require minimal maintenance.

Last year I purchased a Garden Tower. What was I thinking! I would have to start vegetable seeds indoors. Would they grow? Given my track record, this was iffy. I was so relieved when 50 seeds sprouted and could be transplanted outside. The summer rain and my garden hose kept the soil in the tower moist. In a few weeks I had delicious homegrown food.

Jesus said that people are like seeds. And that presents a problem for us. Seeds illustrate the tension between losing life and gaining life, between living and dying. This 41-minute presentation follows seeds through the Bible, unearthing the tension they symbolize.

Nights Are Long - Music Story

Dad was a miller by trade. The company he worked for made restaurant quality food mixes. My favorite was wild rice pancake mix. After years of inhaling flour and other dry baking ingredients, he developed COPD. There were times when he couldn’t sleep unless he was sitting up. He sent me a poem he wrote about his love/hate relationship with his lazy boy chair. I set the poem to music, below.

Despite COPD, Dad was grateful. This is in his own handwriting.

For those of you who have trouble deciphering a lefty’s script, this is what he wrote:

Well it has been fun to go back into the past. Perhaps one could be proud of one’s ancestors, but I am much more grateful that through faith in Christ I have been born into the family of God. John 1:12 “But as many as received him to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” My prayer is that this might be real in the lives of all who read this.

The Song of Moses – Music Story

The Song of Moses, sometimes called The Song of the Sea, is the first song in the Bible. It was written at the time of the Exodus, around 1400 BC. Here it is beautifully formatted on three different Torah scrolls, each one hand-copied from a previous copy of the Torah. Notice, the scrolls are dated centuries apart, yet are formatted identically. The formatting symbolizes columns of water on either side of the children of Israel as they walked on dry land through the Red Sea.[i]

I have been privileged to see several Torah scrolls and marvel at the beauty of the penmanship, the careful attention to detail, the amazing accuracy of each copy.

God called Abram to a new identity. His sense of self, of who he was, was to change. Abram was to have a new allegiance, one not based on nation or people group. Abram was to leave his country and his father’s household and go to the land God would show him. God promised to make him a great nation. All the peoples on earth would be blessed through him. Abram’s identity was to be based on God’s promise. But it would take a miracle for him to become a great nation. He was seventy-five. His wife was sixty-five, childless, and barren. Yet, Abram believed God and went as the Lord had told him! And so began the great story of redemption.

In the call of Abram we see rudiments of the story:

· A calling

· A land

· A promise

· New identity

· A child

· A miracle birth

Through one man’s act of faith God would bless all.

Crowds of people were following Jesus. He was in the public eye, being sought out. Were his disciples basking in the limelight? Finding pleasure in fame?

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on the mountain and sat down. His disciples came to him, and Jesus described to them the person who is to be congratulated, to be envied. He explained the best way of living, the one that gives the greatest rewards today and tomorrow. The person who accepts the demands of God’s Kingdom, that person truly finds happiness and well-being.

What Jesus taught his disciples is known as The Beatitudes and is found in The Sermon on the Mount.

Romans – Music Story

Something is wrong with the world.

We live in a violent world. War is raging on every continent. In fact, thirteen major wars are being fought right now, including the civil war in Myanmar that forcibly displaced over a million people. As the military was seizing power, my niece evacuated on one of the last planes out of the country.

We live in an asylum-seeking world. Thousands of Mexican migrants with their belongings stuffed into one bag are bussed to “sanctuary cities” in the U.S and simply dropped off. In a major city just a few hours from my home they fill a third of the already overwhelmed family homeless shelters.

We live in a world battling over orthodoxy. In a neighboring state, an education law resulted in the removal of hundreds of books from public schools, classic works of fiction, nonfiction history books, even Pulitzer Prize winning contemporary novels!

The apostle Paul explains the root of the problem in the New Testament book of Romans.

Three songs from Romans

1. The Mind of God

We originated in the mind of God. We are created by, through, and for a triune God to reflect his unity and diversity.[1]

2. Bad News! Good News!

The problem is personal. We don’t reflect God’s unity and diversity. We have fallen short of the glory of God. We are sinners. God’s solution to the problem was personal. God sent his Son, Jesus, to demonstrate that he loves us. We are forgiven and made right with God through Jesus’ death.[2]

3. The Love of God

Surrounded by violence? Forcibly displaced? Seeking asylum? On the wrong side of orthodoxy? For those who have accepted God’s solution, nothing can separate them from the love of God.[3]

Before Time Began

Read Titus 1:1-5 and Titus 2:11-14. Who wrote the letter? To whom is it written? Why? What preaching was entrusted to the writer?

Compare Titus1:1-3 and Titus 2:11-14 in the Amplified Bible and The Message. What did God promise before the beginning of time? To whom was it promised? When did God fulfill the promise? What does that mean for you?

Listen to the song. Does it capture the message of these verses? Why? Why not?

Ordinary Lives

Read Titus 1:6-9 and Titus 2:1-9. What is Titus to teach? (Titus 2:1) How are leaders to live out that teaching? Older men? Older women? Young women? Young men? Slaves / employees? What happens when people live out the teaching? (Titus 2:10)

Listen to the song. What are ordinary clothes? How would you say it differently?

The Hymn of Salvation by Grace

Read Titus 3:4-7. Summarize these verses.

Compare Titus 3:4-7 in the New International Version and The Passion Translation. What title does The Passion Translation give this section? Why? (See the callout in verse 4.) In which translation does the cadence of the words best reflect the title given to this section?

Moses' Genealogy

There are lots of genealogies or family trees in the Old Testament. The Genesis 5 family tree lists descendants from Adam to Noah. The Genesis 11 family tree lists descendants from Seth to Abraham. Moses’ family tree is found in Exodus 6.

The genealogies use the Hebrew word יָלַד (yā·lǎḏ) which means “have a child.” It is translated “bore” or “begat.” Unless we understand how Moses used the word יָלַד (yā·lǎḏ), the Old Testament genealogies will not make sense. They will be absurd. They will be impossible. Let me explain.

This twelve-minute presentation examines the impossibility of Moses’ genealogy.

I Stand Firm – Music Story

Paul pictures the Christian life as a battle. A battle against doubt, fear, deception, darkness. Paul instructs us to “Put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.”

Doubt and Fear vs. Pursuit of Holiness

When we experience pain, problems, and stress, we are tempted to pursue happiness. The battle we face is internal, a battle against doubt and fear. When life doesn’t go as we wish, Paul instructs us use the Word of God as a sword. We are to let God’s Word pierce us and transform our pursuit, from happiness to holiness.

Deception vs. Liberty

We live in a post-truth culture, a culture in which feelings trump facts. Jesus, not how we feel, is truth. His teachings are under attack. This battle is external, a battle against deceptive cultural norms, claims based on feelings. This battle is fought in the public arena for the right of Jesus followers to express truth. And after doing everything we can, Paul instructs us to stand our ground.

Darkness vs. Life

Jesus is the light. Darkness seeks to extinguish the light. Darkness rules where Jesus and his teachings are banned. When the day of evil comes, followers of Jesus may experience loss of property or livelihood, imprisonment, torture, even death. In the day of evil Paul instructs us to put on the full armor of God and stand firm.

The Majesty of the Maker! – Music Story

In 2007 a group of us gathered to plan a Darwin’s Day 2009 celebration. We were going to celebrate the Creator’s majesty with drama and music. We outlined a story. A script writer would pen the drama. I had written thirteen songs based on thirteen creation passages in the Bible. A professional musician would arrange the music for his group. They would perform music and drama. We would book venues around the city. Then … our script writer started grad school. Our professional musician changed jobs. Both had to bow out due to time constraints. We had no Darwin’s Day 2009 celebration.

What could I do with a bare outline of a story and a few songs? I finalized the story line and wove it between songs I had written. I now had a musical that any worship team (yours!) could adapt and make their own.

The Majesty of the Maker!

He’s a homicide detective and a new father. He wants something real, something solid to pass on to his son.

He discovered the Bible’s claims about creation match reality:

· The creation Psalm matches reality.

· The Cause of the universe must lie outside the universe.

· Life cannot exist unless the universe is stretched out.

· The Genesis creation account of man matches reality.

He discovered the Bible’s claims about God and people match reality:

· People are immeasurably valuable, yet deeply flawed.
Garden of Decision from Genesis 3:15[5]

· If the Creator became a man, he would be like Jesus.
The Word from John1:1-18[6]

· Jesus promises to meet the deepest longings of the heart.
Christmas Every Day from Revelation 21:1-5[7]

· The Creator’s promises can be tested.
A Sure Bet from Jeremiah 33:25-26[8]

· We instinctively know that the Creator exists.
Secret Lives from Romans 1:18-20[9]

He weighed the evidence:

· Creation shows the existence and grandeur of God.
A Prayer from Psalm 19:1-3, 14[10]

· The Creator is good, loving, and just.
I Cry to God from the book of Job[11]

· The Creator can be trusted when pain engulfs.
You Are There from Psalm 139[12]
