Q:I’ve been studying personal success technology for quite some time. All the metaphysical books teach you that there is plenty for everyone. But I often find myself feeling competitive and haunted by thoughts of scarcity – like there is only so much money, success, and opportunity to go around. How do I get beyond the belief that if I don’t snatch up the goodies, someone else will!

A: First I must tell you, there is no quick fix here because we are talking about expanding your consciousness. This requires commitment. However, if you’re willing to do the work, the rewards are limitless!

There IS more than enough to go around. After all, that’s what infinite means! The way to integrate your ego, so that it works in partnership with your soul’s wisdom, is to contemplate the infinite. Begin with willingness and intention to remember Truth. Then put yourself on the path. Study, meditate, pray, and talk to like-minded people. As you cultivate a long-term relationship with Source, your ego will take up less space in your consciousness. And slowly but surely, scarcity thinking will become a distant memory as you play in the realm of infinite possibility.

On some level, most of us know this. Yet we still resist change, fight it and try to control it. To truly accept change as a predictable part of life, learn to relate to it from a place of power, and open up to the incredible opportunities that are always present (even if hidden), allows us to dance, rather than repeatedly finding ourselves in a wrestling match with our reality. Wouldn’t you rather to dance?

Let’s explore the possibilities, shall we?

Accepting Change As a Part of Life
Even if we know that change is natural, our tendency to resist it usually comes from underlying feelings of powerlessness and fear. As human beings we tend to derive our sense of security from control, familiarity and predictability. Challenge any of these qualities and we feel insecure and unsafe. Even if the current conditions make us unhappy, we’d rather cling to the familiar than to release it for what feels like the risky potential of something better. So, when we find ways to feel powerful instead of powerless, and learn how to relate to fear productively, it becomes possible to accept change as a part of life.

Relating to Change From a Place of Power
The knee-jerk human reaction to change tends to be to fight against it. When we fight something we:

• Pursue the apparent enemy (i.e. get it before it gets me)
• Tense up (i.e. become rigid, brace yourself)
• Focus on the conflict (i.e. examine, dissect, problem solve)

From an energetic or spiritual point of view, this strategy is completely counter-productive. From a human-experience perspective, this approach fuels stress, burns up your internal resources, and blocks your ability to usher in the inevitable positive opportunities that are ALWAYS (yes, I said always) inherent in change.

What’s the solution?
An opposite approach.

The most productive, expansive and joyful way to relate to change is to practice:

• Standing (rather than pursuing),
• Yielding (rather than tensing up), and
• Focusing on True North (redirecting your attention consistently toward Highest Truth)

I call this Being the Seaweed

This underwater plant serves as a powerful metaphor for a way of being that you can practice in any situation that represents fast-moving change, unpredictability or challenge.

Imagine this… an ocean is the embodiment of movement. The water (life) is in constant change. Seaweed is a life form that lives gracefully within this environment. When waves rise up and swell with power and force, the seaweed DANCES with it.

It stands in one place. Firmly rooted to a rock or secure foundation. It yields and moves with the ebb and flow of the water. And even if a hurricane causes the water to become intensely forceful, and the seaweed gets thrashed around, it always seeks true north (the highest it can extend itself in the water), and the buoyant nature of the water always supports it to do so.

The seaweed doesn’t pursue (nor run from) the waves in an attempt to conquer them or avoid them. It isn’t rigid, which might cause it to break, or require it to change its nature from soft and flowing to hard and brittle. And the seaweed doesn’t focus on the waves, nor try to outsmart them. It simply looks to the sun, extends itself to its furthest reach, and moves with the waves, while allowing the power and life of the ocean to sustain it and keep it buoyant.

How Seaweed Facilitates Personal Success

So how and why would this seaweed approach be any better than the fighting philosophy? Well, from the human-experience perspective, being the seaweed may initially feel completely counter-intuitive, uncomfortable and unproductive. But from the energetic/spiritual perspective, being the seaweed allows you to be empowered by the very life force energy that fuels the change, rather than be overpowered by it.

Consider electricity: Would you rather relate to that energy in a way that powers your home for greater enjoyment and comfort, or risk electrocution?

Here’s how it works:

The physical world is the visible world. This is where we see, experience and relate to change through our five senses. There is also an invisible world that is just as real (you might even say more real), but requires our Soul Selves for access. The visible world is by nature one of limitation, restriction, and either/or options. The invisible world is by nature one of wholeness, expansion, and infinite possibilities. And the ONLY thing that determines the reality you will experience has to do with WHERE YOU PLACE YOUR ATTENTION.

We direct our attention in numerous ways. The fighting philosophy causes us to direct our attention toward…

• limiting beliefs (I must get you under control because change is bad),
• fear (this is unfamiliar, I’m losing my sense of security and control, this change makes me feel unsafe), and
• conflict (closed tense body, self-protecting, with fists up ready to fight… what you resist persists). With your attention directed in this way you energize exactly what you do not want.

However, by being the seaweed you OPEN UP to the well-being that is always available through the invisible world.Your attention is focused on…

• Higher Truth (we do this by studying and contemplating the True Nature of the Universe),
• trust (when you yield to change you are demonstrating a willingness to trust and believe that the change will not crush you, and that there is GOOD in the very life force that is generating the change),and
• openness (by standing exactly where you are, feet firmly rooted, arms wide open, you can RECEIVE and PERCEIVE the Well-Being that is inherent in the waves of change.)

How to Be the Seaweed
The thing to remember about being the Seaweed is that it is a STATE OF BEING. Remember, it is the OPPOSITE of your likely knee-jerk reaction. When we fight, we engage in a whole lot of doing and thinking as we try to figure things out and execute strategies. However, when you’re being the seaweed, your doing a lot less. You lean back, breathe deeply, surrender over and over again, and your thinking is mostly focused on self-talk as you remind yourself to let go, to trust, contemplate that the Highest Truth of life itself is well-being, and state to yourself over and over again,
