Xperia™ go signature features – IP67, pressure sensor, access to Sony Entertainment Network
Xperia™ go features an Ingress Protection (IP) rating of 67. The IP number specifies the environmental protection of enclosures around electrical equipment. The first number refers to protection against solid objects; the second refers to protection against liquids. For Xperia™ go, the device has total protection against dust, and protection against the effects of water immersion between 15cm and 1m.

It also comes with a pressure sensor, which developers can utilise in the weather-related or barometric pressure-apps through the Android sensor API. For more information on the pressure sensor, check out our latest barometric pressure article. Xperia™ go also offers access to Sony Entertainment Network*, including Video Unlimited and Music Unlimited.

Fluid graphics and low power utilisation
Xperia™ go incorporates a 1 GHz dual core ST-Ericsson NovaThor™ U8500 processor to deliver superior performance. The U8500 uses SMP (Symmetric Multi-Processing) dual core technology with a high-end 3D graphics accelerator, which enables a full web-browsing experience. For more information about the U8500 platform, check out ST-Ericsson’s NovaThor U8500 product page.

This new smartphone also has an ARM Mali 400 GPU that is OpenGL ES 2.0 conformant and provides 2D and 3D acceleration with performance scalable up to 1080p resolutions. To learn about OpenGL ES, read our previous blog post on 3D for Android. Xperia™ go provides a vivid viewing experience on a mineral glass and scratch-resistant, LCD display, and is powered by the Mobile BRAVIA® engine for colour management, noise reduction, sharpness filtering, and contrast management for close to real image reproduction. Great sound is achieved with xLOUD™ to enhance loudness and maximise sound without breaking.

Are you working on an Android™ app that you’d like users to experience on an external device like a TV or monitor? If your Xperia™ smartphone (or other Android™ device) has an HDMI port, then your app should detect when it’s plugged into a powered high-definition screen to ensure the display is rendered properly on the larger screen. This quick tutorial includes some code that shows you how. Read more after the jump.

Phone content shown on a TV using the HDMI connection.

A number of Sony and Sony Ericsson phones (Xperia™ arc, Xperia™ arc S, Xperia™ neo, Xperia™ pro, Xperia ion™ and Xperia™ S) feature a High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) port. When you connect an HDMI cable, the screen content shown on the device is automatically mirrored to the larger screen. In some cases, maybe the app developer intentionally wants to prevent the HDMI port becoming active, if the content is only meant for the handset screen. But if you want your app to receive and render content via the HDMI port, your app must be registered to receive HDMI port status changes.

An application can detect if the device is connect via an HDMI connector by listening to the broadcast intent:

"com.sonyericsson.intent.action.HDMI_EVENT"

This intent carries an extra parameter that contains information regarding if HDMI is in use. This extra parameter is named:

"com.sonyericsson.intent.extra.HDMI_STATE"

The supported HDMI states are: “HDMI_OFF” and “HDMI_IN_USE.”

In this case, you will need to prepare a BroadcastReceiver listening to that event, as shown by the following sample code:

In AndroidManifest.xml:

<receiver android:name=".HdmiListener">
<intent-filter>
<action android:name="com.sonyericsson.intent.action.HDMI_EVENT" />
</intent-filter>
</receiver>

In the source code of the BroadcastReceiver:

public class HdmiListener extends BroadcastReceiver {
static String HDMIAPPEXTRA = "abrisHdmiExtraParameter";

// Just a name for my launched activity
private static String HDMIINTENT = "com.sonyericsson.intent.action.HDMI_EVENT";
private static final String EXTRA_HDMI_STATE =
"com.sonyericsson.intent.extra.HDMI_STATE";

@Override
public void onReceive(Context ctxt, Intent receivedIt) {
String action = receivedIt.getAction();
if (action.equals(HDMIINTENT)){
String extras = receivedIt.getStringExtra(EXTRA_HDMI_STATE);
Intent it = new Intent(ctxt,HdmiFromIntent.class);
it.putExtra(HDMIAPPEXTRA, extras);
it.setFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK);
ctxt.startActivity(it);

//Do whatever you want to do – preferably
//hand an intent to a service instead of
//launching an activity – in this case a UI was
//desired for demo purpose.
}
}

}

It’s as easy as that. So if you haven’t yet bothered ensuring that your Android™ app detects HDMI, just remember that several Xperia™ smartphones, and other Android phone manufacturers, have an HDMI port. Including HDMI connection is a small fix for your app that could go a long way, and might help your app stand out from similar apps missing the feature. Interested in trying out the HDMI API? Let us know how it goes and if you have any questions.

Our search for apps and app ideas that can be extended through the Sony SmartWatch kicked into full gear at last week’s AnDevCon and with great success. We got a great response from those attending the SmartWatch session and lines of developers eager to share their SmartWatch app extension ideas with our judges. Close to 100 SmartWatches were handed out among the 1,200 developers in attendance.

In addition, we will today start to ship the first SmartWatch devices to those developers who have applied online. Read on to learn how you can submit your apps/app ideas and get a free SmartWatch, as well as promotion in Sony online media channels if your app is successful!

Magnus Helgstrand, Accessories Engineer at Sony Mobile.

AnDevCon, the annual technical conference for software developers building Android apps, took place last week in the San Francisco Bay Area. Given that it is attended by intermediate to advanced developers, it provided the perfect vehicle for presenting a SmartWatch developer session from Magnus Helgstrand, one of our engineers in the accessory team at Sony Mobile. Magnus spoke to a packed audience, going over the full features of SmartWatch, the Smart Extension SDK including the SmartWatch sensor API, and how to use the accelerometer in Android applications.

Magnus Helgstrand presenting the SmartWatch developer session at AnDevConIII.

Here is some of the feedback we got from the audience:

- Really nice API! It took me less than 1 hour to make a new app to run on SmartWatch.

- Excellent potential with this device. Looking forward to trying out new ideas with it.

- Seriously considering extending one of my apps to the SmartWatch.

For more information about his session (called “SmartWatch Development 101: Transforming the Mobile User Experience through Sony Smart Accessories”) check out the slides in his SmartWatch presentation.

SmartWatch submission updates

In the coming week, we will start sending out SmartWatches to selected developers who have submitted proposals through the online survey. We have selected a few of the most interesting ideas among those who applied early. For all developers who have already submitted proposals (either in person or online), you will receive an email notification from the selection committee whether or not your proposal was accepted. We will continue to scan the ideas you send in and ship devices until June 26, when we close the application forms.

Get a free SmartWatch and get promoted in Sony’s social media channels

The Sony SmartWatch app campaign was kicked off a few weeks ago, and aims to find the most brilliant apps and ideas for SmartWatch, Sony’s micro display for Android smartphones. Most importantly, we’re looking for existing apps that have great SmartWatch potential – such as apps with existing services that can show notifications on the SmartWatch. We’re also looking for apps in progress, apps that could be paired with any of the SmartWatch’s API features – notification capabilities, accelerometer, control API and widget API. So if you’re a developer with an existing app, or with a good idea and a plan to create one, you can still submit your proposal to us online, and if we like the idea, you will get a free SmartWatch to help start you developing.

SmartWatch and Smart Wireless Headset pro.

Our main objective for this campaign is to increase the number of SmartWatch-supported apps on Google Play. Therefore as a bonus, if you create and upload your SmartWatch app extension to Google Play before June 26, 2012 (given it’s a solid app), we will also send you Smart Wireless Headset pro. On top of that, if yours is a really cool or useful app, we might ask to promote your app Sony’s social media channels, like the Sony Mobile Facebook page (with close to 7 million fans). You might also be part of Sony’s Recommender app, installed on more than 10 million Sony Xperia™ smartphones.

To submit your app proposal and possibly get a free SmartWatch, and find out all the details about the campaign, check out our SmartWatch app campaign post. For more information on how to get started developing SmartWatch app extensions, check out the Smart Extension SDK.

***You can also directly submit your SmartWatch app proposal through this online form. To apply for a Smart Wireless Headset pro, use this online form. ***

Talented developers found at AnDevCon

At AnDevCon, we invited attendees to submit their forms and pitch their ideas to us in person. Although we had long lines to deal with, we got several great app ideas, ranging from medical to maritime to military uses, and nearly 100 people went home with a SmartWatch of their own. We also spoke to two of our Sony engineers, Anupam Nath and Ke Chang, who were evaluating the ideas submitted at AnDevCon.

Ke Chang, engineer at Sony Mobile.

– Developers were really interested in the SmartWatch at AnDevCon, says Ke Chang. It was great seeing everyone’s enthusiasm and if the ideas people pitched us will materialise, there will be a lot of really cool new apps for SmartWatch soon.

Anupam Nath, Staff Engineer at Sony Mobile.

– We received so many innovative ideas from so many awesome developers all day long, Anupam Nath adds. It’s tremendous to see people excited about this product, and coming up with ideas that really could help people enrich their lives.

***

In the latest version of our Extension Development Kit (EDK 2.0), which will let you create app extensions for the Timescape and Music player apps in Sony Xperia™ phones, we’ve included some useful new API features. For example, you can now include the number of user reactions for your Timescape™ event. You can also make it possible for the end user to interact with an event object in the Timescape™ spline, without launching a detailed view. These updates will make it easier to create compelling app extensions that stand out. A bunch of developers have already created their own EDK extensions – learn more after the jump!

The EDK is great way for you as a developer to maximise the visibility and value of your app, by creating extensions to either the Timescape™ app or the Music player in Sony Xperia™ phones. By doing this, your app will be displayed when an end user searches for Timescape™ extensions on Google Play, or as an option when an end user taps the Infinite key in the Music player. You can read more about this in the EDK overview page on Developer World.

A number of developers have already done this. On Google Play, there are currently 95 Timescape and 11 Music player extensions, including:

mora touch.

Timescape™ developer spotlight – Pallavi Kalyanam

But what’s really the truth about these figures, and how’s it like to develop the extensions? We got in contact with Pallavi Kalyanam to hear what she thinks:

– The outcome has been awesome and overwhelming. I received a lot of mails thanking me and suggesting new extensions ideas. I didn’t know there are so many people who like and use Timescape on daily basis. Especially the “YouTube Timescape” and “SonyEricsson Blogs Timescape” were more appreciated.

Pallavi, who is actually still developing new extensions as she gets new ideas, means it’s quite convenient to develop them:

– It was easier than I thought to create the extensions. And the EDK was so helpful. The examples were very clear and easy to understand. The RSS extension sample was really helpful when I created my first Android app.

Right now Pallavi is working on two new extensions which will be called Weather Now Timescape, and 3DAY Weather Timescape, which will show weather updates every three hours and the weather for the next coming three days. If you’re interested in these, remember to check Google Play soon to download them.

Screenshot of Pallavi Kalyanam’s upcoming 3DAY Weather Timescape extension (not final version).

So if you haven’t created a Timescape or Music player extension before, maybe now it’s the time? In EDK 2.0, the possibilities to create compelling extensions for Timescape or the Music player have increased a lot. Read on to learn more about the recently added features!

New API features
So what’s new in EDK 2.0 then? Well, we’ve strengthened the connection between Timescape™ and social network updates by adding and improving a number of “social” API features (in the Event Stream API, which is used by Timescape™ extended apps and services to feed data to into the Timescape™ app in Sony Xperia™ smartphones).

The new API features allow you to create unique Timescape™ presentations, which will make it easier for end users to respond to posts directly inside of the Timescape™ application. This means these new features are good tools to get an increased number of interactions to your service. These API features are also backwards compatibility with previous EDK releases, which means that existing Timescape™ or Music player-related apps work on newer Sony Xperia™ smartphones. The new API features include the option to:

Provide more sender info – Ever since we introduced the EDK 1.0, it has been possible for EDK developers to indicate how an event is related to the end user. It could, for example, be a message directed to the logged-in user on a social network service. But there used to be no possibility to show the display name or profile image. In EDK 2.0, we have added the option to provide such information – for example display name, profile image link and so on. Please see the “MeColumns” section in the Event Stream API Javadoc the Timescape extensions code example & documentation kit for more information.

The Timescape™ Friends widget showing an aggregated view of events (from different sources) that are related to the end user.

The Timescape™ Friends widget showing an aggregated view of events (from different sources) that are related to the end user.

Perform actions on the event object directly – In EDK 2.0, it’s possible for developers to specify which user actions can be performed on an event object. This allows the end user to act on, or perform a particular action, in relation to the event object in Timescape™ without launching the Event detail view, which used to be the case before. This saves the user an extra step for performing the action, without having to launch a separate UI for the actual application.

For instance, if the event object is a status update message about a photo on a social network service, the possible user actions on this object might be Comment, Like, Favourite, Share and Tag. Now if you supply this user action information to the Event Stream API in your Timescape™ extended app, it may enable Timescape™ to show the Comment button in the same display area as the event object text.

As a developer, you then have an option to attach several user actions to the event object, although not all of them may be shown in Timescape™. It might be wise to only attach the most commonly used user actions to event objects, as the screen real estate is limited, and it’s not possible to display many user actions. If you want to know more on how to do this, check out the “SourceActionColumns” and “ActionColumns” section of the Event Stream API document in the Timescape extensions code example & documentation kit. The EDK 2.0 sample code, available in the same kit, also shows how to implement this.

Show how many people have performed an action – as a developer, you may now also include the number of user reactions, such as the number of people who have Liked the event object, or the number of people who have made the event object a Favourite. This information may encourage users to interact with the event object more often, and thereby increase the engagement. Check out the “COUNT – ActionColumns” section of the Event Stream API document in the Timescape extensions code example & documentation kit for more information.

The Timescape™ Friends widget, including the “Me” slot (highlighted) that use the new API features.

Introducing a new widget – Timescape™ Friends!

Besides the new API features in EDK 2.0, a nice new thing in our 2012 Xperia™ smartphones is the widget called Timescape™ Friends. This widget makes use of the new API features described above in a good way. With Timescape™ Friends, you can get all the information about your friends’ activities directed towards you – Facebook messages and images they’ve posted about you, tweets addressed to you, personal comments to posts, emails to you, and more – all from the widget. And with the “Me” slot, you will see a collection of events directed to you as the user – personal SMSs, personal Facebook messages, personal emails – whatever you want.

You can also use Timescape™ Friends to quickly interact with and respond quickly to posts, without having to launch each social media app.

The new API features for displaying most likely used user action and counters shown in the Timescape™ Friends widget.

The screenshot above shows the Timescape™ Friends widget in action. The best part is that if you’ve already implemented a Timescape™ extension to your social network app, you can easily add the functionalities of the “Me” collected data using the new API features listed above to the current implementation. The Friends widget can use all the functionalities your app extension comes with by using the API!

What do you say app developers, are you thinking of creating a Timescape™ estensions?
Sony mobile has been a proud sponsor of Ericsson Application Awards 2012. All participants in the finalist teams each received an Xperia™ S. Karl-Johan Dahlström, Head of Developer Relations at Sony Mobile, was one of the judges:

– We’re happy to be part of Ericsson Application Awards, and I’m impressed by the high level of the contestants, as well as by how professionally the competition is run. We see great potential in all the finalists, and it was great to see participation and innovation from emerging markets like MedAfrica from Kenya.

The Ericsson Application Awards is a yearly, global competition that provides an opportunity for Android™ application developers to gain visibility and reach out to customers via Ericsson’s distribution channels. The competition is open to students and small companies, and is sponsored in cooperation with Sony.

Do you have a brilliant app idea for the Sony SmartWatch? If so, your innovation could earn you a SmartWatch of your own. That’s right, we’re giving qualified developers their very own SmartWatch, Sony’s micro display for Android smartphones, which gives users wireless and discreet access to calls, message and apps. And if you upload your app to Google Play before June 26, you will have the chance to be promoted in Sony’s online marketing channels.

Get all the details after the jump!

Sony SmartWatch range of colours.

Develop a SmartWatch app extension – earn a FREE SmartWatch, FREE headset, FREE app promotion

Have you started developing an app for the Sony SmartWatch, our smart micro display accessory for Android smartphones? Or maybe you’ve got a cool idea in mind? Whatever your inspiration may be, we’re now kicking off a campaign in search of great SmartWatch app innovations, and in return, we’re ready to give you your own SmartWatch if you’re a qualified developer.

But the story doesn’t end there. If you create and upload your SmartWatch app extension to Google Play before June 26 2012, we will show our gratitude to the most useful (in our mind) Smart Watch app extensions from developers, by handing out a large number of Smart Wireless Headset pros.

And if you’ve created a really cool or useful app, we might ask for your app to be promoted in Sony’s online marketing channels, like the Sony Mobile Facebook page (with close to 7 million fans), as well as getting a slot in the Recommender app, installed on more than 10 million Sony Xperia™ smartphones. If we think your app extension has what it takes, we will contact you for further discussions.

Step 1 – coming up with an idea and applying for a SmartWatch
So if you’re an Android developer interested in creating a SmartWatch app extension, start with the following steps:

Come up with a solid idea for a SmartWatch app extension. Feel free to check out the Smart Extension SDK for reference.

Apply for a free SmartWatch using this form.

To get a SmartWatch, you must be an Android developer with some experience, and we want you to have a solid idea for what you want to develop. Please provide your name, email and a shipping address so that we can get in contact with you and send you the device if you’re selected. This initiative is open for applications globally, but we prioritise app extensions in English.

Step 2 – develop, upload and notify us about your SmartWatch app extension
To continue on your SmartWatch app extension project, and to apply for a headset and potential promotion in Sony online marketing channels, please follow these steps:

Develop a useful SmartWatch app extension using the Smart Extension SDK.

Submit it to Google Play according the guidelines in the Smart Extension SDK.

Apply for a free headset and promotion in Sony online marketing channels by notifying us. Just enter some short information about your app extension and shipping details in this form no later than June 26 2012.

We will go through all app extensions submitted and get in contact with all those getting a headset, as well as those who we want to promote.

Apply directly at AnDevCon or Google I/O

Now if you’re planning to attend either AnDevCon or later Google I/O, you’ll be able to apply and get a SmartWatch straight away! Just come up and talk to us in the booth, and we’ll explain all the details. AnDevCon III is happening from the 14th of 17th of May at the Hyatt Regency in Burlingame, California. You can find us in booth #406. If you’re going to AnDevCon, remember not to miss our SmartWatch developer session on Wednesday, May 16th at 3:30 PM where you’ll learn how to develop your own SmartWatch app extensions to create new, innovative use cases and get better visibility. Find out more about this, including a discount code, in our AnDevCon III blog post.
