I also have no apparent interest in flowers, but thought this might be a good opportunity to take my DSLR for some outdoor shooting. Weather on the day was splendid - it had to be 30 degrees or so. The trip was tremendously long and tiring, and the entrance fee was expensive too.

$16 bucks for an entrance fee without any free gifts. That is a rip off just to look at some flowers, so we took back some for ourselves. Most of the pictures in this post will have no flower names whatsoever because I honestly did not bother to check.

Macro shot upon arrival.

Nice orange flower

This part of the exhibition hosts a multitude of colourful anonymous flowers

Shooting any pictures here was particularly difficult due to the amount of people waiting to shoot theirs. Among this bunch, pesky kids are the worst culprits, screwing up beautiful shots with their untimely intrusion while destroying flowers in their path. Never bring kids to a flower festival.

White tulips

In the middle of the festival garden stands a metal tree with 77 branches symbolising modernisation in a naturally green world.

THE metal tree

You can actually count the branches with 7 representing 7 days in a week. I have no idea what the other 7 is for.

A long walk down south sees the main attraction of the venue.

2km stretch of tulips

Amongst the flowers are a few statues and recycled metallic shapes for sale. This is pretty cool - It sells for AUD$6,000. Gundams would've sold for more.

Robots

lol Hi guys

Also, this arc thing is worth mentioning. It is slightly cheaper - AUD$1,800. I guess it would do as an over simplistic time machine.

Everybody loves evil bunnies and their evil drawings

Some more pics of anonymous flowers

Our lunch for the day. No, not flowers for lunch. Some irish deep fried beef stick with mayonnaise sauce.

Irish stick ftw

This would be a great trip for tulip lovers, but I got my fair share of my $16 bucks with a great day out in the sun shooting stuff.

「 sonying.blogspot.com 」

I is back in September

After being away on a 3 month hiatus, I shall come back with 2 random pics! type='text'>MasterChef

After watching MasterChef for weeks, I was inspired to be a Masterchef! As the first steps to my successful career, I tried to prepare a dish that would impress the judges. Without further adue, I would like to present my dish.

My MasterChef Masterpiece

The ingredients and recipe can be found right here! Yes, I would reveal my special ingredients now. You can find all of the ingredients in a packet of indomee. The recipe is that you mix them all together and end up with a delicious looking plate of food, MasterChef quality. You could also spread the sauce like I did, MasterChef style!

Also, I believe I have a great pallette and understanding of food. I should also get some creativity points for adding a dash of red chilli in the middle.

Well, I hope the botak, fatty, and beckham judge will like my dish and my MasterChef skillz. Hopefully I won't be in the bottom three =/

「 sonying.blogspot.com 」

1/100 Cherudim Gundam Part II

This is how Cherudim looks like in mid-air poses; I've got rid of the action stand in this pic but will post some pics of the stand soon. Sadly, it may never unite with its fellow Gundam buddies, as it's the first gundam I have completed here in Melbourne. It's also the first to feature only long-range armament, without close-range combat weapons. Cherudim has only 2 weapons, a pair of GN Beam Pistols II and GN Sniper Rifle II. For defence, it has 9 Shield Bits, in which they can be deployed to automatically block and intercept incoming fire. In the Gundam 00 series, Cherudim acts as a back-up shooter for the team, providing ground and anti-air support fire from long-range.

In this kit, special features include a sniper scope when the red cap is pulled backwards, enabling far-range sniping. Something special about Cherudim is that there is only one yellow "antennae" on the left side of the head, creating a cyborg feel whereas other gundams are normally symmetrical in this area. A holoscreen is also provided for even further range sniping during Trans-am mode. Sadly, the holoscreen is in clear plastic, not blue as illustrated in pictures. Moveable mini stands behind the heel also allows for improved stability, which is especially needed in sniping positions.

This is my first post of Cherudim, and more will come when I finish the Shield Bit and Action stands. Trans-am mode will also only be featured in future posts.

Cherudim Gundam

Cherudim with GN Beam Pistols II guarding my desk

More pistol action

GN Sniper Rifle II

Zoom. I enjoyed building it; simple yet beautiful design. I initially intended to get Dynames, its predecessor in Gundam 00 Season 1, but the squarish design of the shields put me off.

When I get some more spare time, complete the stand, I shall. The baby blue colour, along with the "Smiggle" zip and cute brick characters had me sold. It's only $4.95 anyway, and all my weapons of mass destruction fit in perfectly. Sadly, I have to be careful as I've drawn a little line across it which seems impossible to clean. It also feels soft and wobbly but I like the texture of the material.

Smiggle! I think they only have this brand in Australia

The Smiggle printed zip

The three brick characters

My favourite brick guy

Personally I think Smiggle is a cheap brand, but quality wise it's not too bad. Its shops are very colourful, and shelves are normally packed with all sorts of stationery. It's very enticing from outside when you see the colours, and when you step in you feel like playing with everything there. Not to mention I also bought a round Smiggle box (only $1!) for putting all my Gundam parts like hands and the like - I'll include this in my next Gundam post.

→ Filed under: Show Off, Photography
「 sonying.blogspot.com 」

My dSLR α700

Recently I decided to buy a dSLR to get into a whole new level in professional photography. I sourced for many days through the internet, looking through Canon, Nikon, and Sony models. Initially I did not know which one to look for, because it is a different case with Point-and-Shoot cameras. With those cameras, the higher the megapixel, the better.

I slowly learnt about entry-level, semi-pro and pro levels for dSLRs. I looked at tons of reviews on cameras such as Nikon d90 & d300, Canon 50d, and also the Sony Alpha series, mainly the α350 and α700. I also had the opportunity to get a grip on every one of these cameras, and found the α700 to be the most suitable one for me. Canon was too heavy and bulky and also did not have Image Stabilization on the body.

However, there was limited stock on the α700 as it is a fairly 'outdated' model. I was somewhat coerced to buy the α350 model due to the lack of stock. I finally decided it was the α700 or no buy. Finally, I got the α700 with the 18-250mm kit lens along with a UV filter that would protect my lens.

α700 with box

The above image is not my α700, I just took it from some random site cos it looked nice. The lens doesn't look that good though, lol. So along with the purchase of my dSLR, I am suddenly bombarded with stuff like focal length, aperture, ISO, shutter speed, white balance and all the other good stuff. I've been experimenting to take some decent pictures and am doing fine so far. Here are some of the pics from my visit to the Puffing Billy, Yarra Valley and the 49th Moomba Festival over the weekend - a very eventful weekend indeed.

The following are pictures of the Moomba WaterFest.

Fire-whip-man at the Moomba WaterFest

Yarra River view from Federation Square

Ferris Wheel - What's a festival without one?

Sky getting darker while the time for fireworks approaches

Continuous Drive Mode attempt to capture fireworks

Due to the smaller dimensions of these pictures after resizing, the quality of the photos may not be as clearly noticeable. Due to this I will upload one selected photo with minimum size reduction, which would consume a lot of my bandwidth LOL.

And that particular picture can be viewed by clicking right >here<

Next are the trips to visit the greenery of Melbourne, with the bird park as the first stop.

Birdy photo upon arrival - Close-up focus shot

My dear Ying with the cute white parrot with wide focus

Puffing Billy ride

This ride was particularly scary at the part where we crossed a bridge up on higher grounds.

Then we went on to look at the iconic wildlife Aussie has to offer.

Cute but deadly bear

As I was sick of kangaroos already, I decided to close-up on a Koala instead.

Pelican?

This was a view I particularly liked, as there was a dark brown contrast along with the lighter browns,
greenery, and water ripples.

All in all, I liked how my new α700 performed, as pictures were sharp when focus was right. There's still a lot of stuff to learn though, and I'm still slowly reading through the guidebook. I'll take more macro shots in the near future, as this is my photography preference as opposed to landscape views.

→ Filed under: Dreamy Blogging, Photograpy
「 sonying.blogspot.com 」

Unboxing my iPhone 3G

The following are pictures of the day I brought back my iPhone 3G 16GB Black. The pics were taken with my Sony Cyber-Shot.

iPhone 3G still in the box, can't wait to be let out

iPhone 3G next to the live-sized cover

iPhone 3G's first time in my hands, still with protective sheet

My iPhone home screen after activation

Gundam Exia wallpaper on my iPhone. My only gripe with it is its battery life. I miss my previous w850i's 1-week lasting battery! The first 6 were a business trip to visit a yard, courtesy of Shell Bhd, as part of my internship attachment and they were so nice to give me business class all the way. The hotel and food were also sponsored; pictures to follow. It was a really informative trip, and as I went on business class, I had the opportunity to look at several Golden Lounges. They all look alike, but of course KLIA’s is the largest.

Also, during business class flights they call you by name, and one MAS air hostess mixed me up with an uncle who seemed a little pissed off when called Mr. Sim. I, on the other hand, couldn't be bothered being Mr. Kong for just a short duration of the flight. Following are pictures of the 6 flights.

Bizniz Class, but on a working trip

My Room

Me taking a rest on the king sized bed

The following 2 flights, although only economy class, and not sponsored by Shell, was a much more entertaining and smashing trip (pun intended). It was the Super Series Masters Final. I was there for 3 days straight, starting from the quarter-finals to the finals. Due to unforeseen traffic complications, I had to miss Taufik’s match with Andrew Smith, which I think lasted for less than half an hour anyway.

My Tickets

I remembered the last time I visited a live badminton tournament was sometime in 2003, and it was in the exact same stadium, except the event was the Malaysian Open. At that time, Lee Chong Wei was a substitute player and made his first appearance against Chen Hong. Of course, he lost to Chen Hong at that time, along with then Malaysia No.1 Wong Choong Hann. Back then, I managed to take photographs with Chen Hong, Xie Xing Fang, Sony Dwi Kuncoro, and a few korean guys. It felt so good to be back here, and this time "Yonex balloon clappers" were handed out free.

But this time it was harder to take pics with the players. I managed to take with Lee Chong Wei, Wong Mew Choo, Tan Boon Heong and Koo Kien Keat. I tried my best to catch hold of Peter Gade, but the bloody guards didn't let me pass. He muttered something about an accident with the players due to letting some idiot pass and take a few pics.

The crowd was awesome, and everyone cheered on as Malaysia swept 3 titles. Men's singles was too easy for Datuk Lee; anyway it was nice to watch him dominating the court again. I would love to go to Malaysia Open which starts on the 6/1/09, but one trip too many would be tight on me budget.

Plus the chinese are still rebelling and are ever so unwilling to step on Malaysian ground. They cited injuries and training for their players, but anyone older than 3 knows the truth.. And I end this post wishing our Malaysian badminton team success
in the year 2009.

「 sonying.blogspot.com 」

1/100 MG Strike Freedom Panel Lining

Over the past few weeks, I took Strike Freedom out and re-did some of the panel lining and markings. With my GM-01 marker almost drying out after Exia, Strike, and Strike Freedom, I managed to finish off the remaining few of the 8 dragoons and complete the panel lining. It looks quite magnificent now, as if I just bought a new Gundam.

I have yet to complete the full burst stand with all the poles and stuff, but I'm sure that will be a breeze.

Dragoon Panel Lining

This picture shows the difference between a panel-lined dragoon and a plain one.
The sandwiched, middle, in-between dragoon is the plain one. Just so you know, this post isn’t about exams so if you’re going to stop reading after the first sentence, I suggest you don’t. After exams I took the tram back to my place as usual, and at this time of the year the mini train is usually jam packed with students. Unfortunately, trams are my only transport to the exam venue and the daily ticket costs AUD$6.50. That’s enough to buy you a hot-bar meal – steamed rice with two dishes of your choice.

After the purchase of my iPhone 3G, I never had any ‘real’ use with the applications that developers deem useful. Apart from the iPod and of course, SMS and Call features, I did not think that I would use them - that was until today. The aforementioned expensive tram decided to stop in the middle of nowhere and I had to find my way back myself. Being terrible with directions, I just followed a group of students for a while. After some time I figured that they looked lost too.

Suddenly I thought of my iPhone. This was a good time to test its abilities. So I took it out, went into Settings, switched on 3G to enable faster data transfer, and then enabled Location Services for it to track my current position with the built-in GPS.
Then I tapped the Maps application, tapped the little target icon on the lower bottom left of the screen and it started pinpointing my location. This is a pic of how Maps looks like.

iPhone 3G Maps App

After it’s done with my location, I tapped the ‘Directions’ button and entered my destination point address, and within seconds a route was tracked for me. The route is shown in purple in the middle iPhone picture below.

iPhone 3G Maps App with Route

There was also a ‘Start’ button with detailed descriptions such as “First, turn left on Noob Street, after 0.5km turn right on Pro Street.” Within minutes I was on the right track, looked for the tram line on the map, and was on my way home.

On a side note, the PSP game I was eagerly waiting for, Star Ocean: First Departure has amazing graphics, as shown in screenshots. But the storyline is terrible. SquareEnix fails on this title… You get to play delivery boy again, running back and forth villages; it’s like watching filler episodes on Bleach and Naruto where all these unnecessary action deviates from the main storyline. Speaking of which, Bleach: Soul Carnival was great. The best game out of so many Bleach fighting series so far. Finally they changed the genre to action RPG with level-up systems and such. I’ve just started playing, and although the levels are quite repetitive and the whole game is in Japanese, I love the boss fights. The characters are well drawn and they will use Bankai in the middle of a fight. This gives it a very realistic feel similar to watching the anime.

I’ll probably post a bit more frequently soon. I’ll get to replying comments and e-mails now. I'll also post pictures of my iPhone 3G as requested by some of you in a separate post. As for the coming days, I’ve got a couple of papers coming and will most likely hit the books.

→ Filed under: Dreamy Blogging, Tech Talk
「 sonying.blogspot.com 」

iSOn 3G

It's been a quick one and a half months; how time flies. I've been busy with several things, particularly watching TV and relaxing. I apologize for not replying some of your comments and emails and will get to doing that soon...

most probably on my new 16GB iPhone 3G. I got it last month, and have never regretted since. It's the best phone I've ever owned - I honestly think it's a revolutionary phone! Though the camera might not be that great, and has no video, it makes up for it by having a large screen for taking pictures. There are also really cool apps on the app store like PocketGuitar and LightSaber Unleashed which turns my iPhone into a guitar and a Lightsaber.

Currently my favourite apps are LightSaber Unleashed, Cannon Game, and Fuzzle. There had been ridiculous apps lately such as the "Knocking on Wood" app where you just knock on a piece of wood for luck. Mostly the good apps are paid apps. And it would be great if someone could donate me a few iTunes Gift Cards so I can fill my iPhone with those cool apps LOL.

So.. there are also racing games that are played with tilting the phone left and right as if it were a steering wheel. The list goes on and on, which includes a guitar tuner, metronome, etc etc. The best part about internet surfing with the iPhone is that 3G is fast. And with the iPhone there is no need for a mouse, so in my opinion that makes mobile internet surfing much more feasible. I've had my mind set from the first moment it caught my eye; I was never going for another mobile phone other than this one.

I was a little worried about updating to iTunes 8 and the latest iPhone Firmware 2.1 due to Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD) issues with Vista. Thankfully mine worked fine. And at least Apple listed the fixes this time rather than the occassional "bug fixes". Here are a few pics of the iPhone 3G from google to finish things off.

iPhone 2.1 Firmware Update

iPhone 3G Album Art

iPhone 3G Photo View, Calling, & Voicemail

→ Filed under: Dreamy Blogging, Tech Talk
「 sonying.blogspot.com 」

Lucky Number 22

I got this green baby for my 22nd!! This is the best iPhone and I reckon it would sell at above AUD$1000 (>RM3000). The downside is that it’s a bit thicker than the 16GB and 8GB versions but gives an extra space of double its predecessors. So far I am not sure as to what the buttons below the screen does. I’m sure they are there for a reason though, since it’s a revolutionary phone. It’s too bad that I can only get such a small picture of it, let’s hope for a bigger and clearer picture soon. I really like this version and hope to get one for myself too.

Currently there is little news and information on this new model but I’m sure there will be some available in the near future.

「 sonying.blogspot.com 」

My wishes over their airspace

Another Gundam post!! Lol I tried to make a replica of the screenshot I took during the opening song of Gundam 00. I particularly like this screen a lot, especially this part of the song. It's the climax of the song and Exia is displayed while slowly zooming out from a low angle.

I think it turned out pretty well except for the background. Today was my first day at uni again. The boring life resumes. Courses seem to get harder and harder; and I reckon there would be a shitload of stuff to do very soon. Things to look forward to are only badminton and maybe snowboarding. Also, I thought of purchasing the iPhone as it can hold so much crap (16GB of it) and would entertain me when I'm bored.

As soon as I reached Melbourne, I went looking for the iPhone. Stocks are terribly limited - whole Melbourne sold out 3 days ago! Everywhere you see posters teasing "Oh sorry, no iPhones today". And the phone is expensive without plans. $199 only holds for a 24-month contract with a phone company, so $199 is only an eye candy advertorial 'hoax'. Hence my plans for one would have to be put on hold.

The reason I did not put up an official Exia post is because I feel there are more pics that can be shot, and it's too early to stop discussing about Exia. I will do that once I have enough time and the same applies to Strike Freedom. I plan to collect more Double-0 Gundams, particularly 1/100 Gundam Dynames. Hope I get one soon free of charge; if anyone would be so kind as to send one to my mailbox that would be great.

That's it - a short update, and in the meantime I'll be waiting for stuff in my mailbox.

→ Filed under: Dreamy Blogging, Gundam
「 sonying.blogspot.com 」

Half time Exia

Time passes so quickly; I'm already halfway through my holidays. I've been spending time doing all sorts of stuff, and one of them is my new hobby - building Gundams. Some people may ask, what are Gundams? Unsurprisingly, the answer can sound very childish and silly. It's as silly as saying, "They are robots", which is in fact exactly what they are. Actually sometimes I'm tempted to just say they're a type of sport car. Undeniably, cars sound better than robots at my age.

The first thing to come to mind is that this University student is still playing with toy robots. I was once asked the second following question, "What are they made of?" The answer sounds no where less terrible than the previous one, which is "Plastic". So this University student spends his time fiddling with plastic robots.

Though much effort and time is required to model a perfect looking kit, it can sound so unappreciative and time-wasting. But I guess the incentive is that moment where you stop and look at what's been accomplished, and admire the ammount of detail that was put in to create a 3d model of a seemingly, fully functional Gundam.

I mentioned "much effort and time", and that is really the case. I started assembling my 1/100 Gundam Exia since the start of the holidays, and have completed the upper part of the torso and two arms thus far. I've also picked up panel lining, which is the main reason it takes so long to assemble. For those noobs, panel lining are the black lines you draw with Gundam Markers to show more depth, 3d-ness, and can make the parts look more realistic. Here are some pics I've taken of my work over the span of a week.

Starting with a pic of me panel lining

Strike Freedom I completed several months ago

And now a series of pics of my partially completed Gundam Exia

Considering this is the first time I try panel lining, I think I did a pretty good job. Exia would look awfully plain without panel lines, so when I decided to buy Exia, I had to indirectly force panel lining upon myself. The Strike Freedom and Exia will get their individual posts once I complete everything 100%.

On a side note, I actually stayed up to watch the Euro 2008 Finals of Germany vs Spain. I stayed up late just to watch my team lose on me. It was terrible play in the mid field, with possessions lost almost on every occassion. However, Spain played tremendously well, and they deserve to win.

→ Filed under: Dreamy Blogging, Gundam
「 sonying.blogspot.com 」

More than Happy Birthday

To my dear Ying, I am out of ideas of how to wish you a very, very Happy Birthday.
