Many migraine headache sufferers are looking for natural ways to put an end to their chronic migraines. They are tired of taking drugs that may cause unwanted or dangerous effects. Discover 2 little-known natural remedies for chronic migraine headaches that have given many people relief from their pain.

To be given the distinction of being chronic, daily headaches must have been present for at least 3 months and occurred a minimum of 15 times during each of those months. If they occur less frequently than this they are considered episodic. Chronic headaches can be debilitating and are experienced by an estimated 3-5% of the world’s population.

Chronic migraines are considered primary headaches because they are standalone. They are not associated with any other health disorder, but are themselves the primary condition. A typical migraine headache will be characterized by a moderate to severe throbbing pain that occurs on one side of the head with the pain intensifying during strenuous activity. Accompanying the pounding can be nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to bright light, and other symptoms. Additionally, visual disturbances, called auras, are commonly experienced by migraine sufferers.

There are many ways to stop migraine headaches that do not require the use of drugs. However, what works for one person may not work for another. Since most natural methods are safe it makes sense to try different remedies until a successful one is found. Below are 2 methods you may not have heard about that have shown success in relieving chronic migraines in some people.

1 – Fish oils can stop the pain

Fish such as tuna, mackerel, and salmon contain the essential fatty acid called omega 3. New studies are now showing that fish oils containing omega 3 may reduce the frequency and duration of migraine headaches in some people. Since this research is still ongoing the general community is unaware of the possible benefits of this fatty acid.

To get the greatest benefit from omega 3 you cannot simply start eating fish, but must take it daily as a nutritional supplement. Large doses are required and eating fish will not supply enough fish oils to provide relief.

It is best to stick with salmon instead of other types of fish because they are usually a cleaner fish. When buying omega 3 make sure you get salmon fish oil that it is certified as being 100% free from any pesticides, toxins, or heavy metals.

2 – Filtering drinking water can eliminate migraine-causing chemicals

There are two ways that water can cause chronic migraines in some people. First, not drinking enough water can lead to dehydration which can cause headache symptoms. And second, chemicals in the water may be the cause of migraine headaches in some individuals.

To cure dehydration it is a simple matter of drinking more water on a daily basis. Every body is different and will require differing amounts of water for optimum health and well being. Although 64 ounces may be an average amount, smaller people may need less and larger people may need more.

Chemicals in drinking water, especially nitrates, can cause chronic headaches. Nitrates are inorganic chemicals that are found pretty much everywhere including the ocean, freshwater, soil, and air. Excessive nitrate levels are often found in ordinary tap water and can cause chronic migraines.

Animal manure, fertilizers, and sewage contain high levels of nitrates and can contaminate drinking water. Eliminating them from the drinking water is as simple as using a water filter. Have your drinking water tested for nitrates. If it contains excessive amounts of nitrates you should get a filter that will remove it. Keep in mind that there may be other chemicals in water that can cause migraine headaches or other health disorders, so filtering your drinking water may be beneficial even if the nitrate level is within a safe range.

Many headache sufferers are looking for a natural migraine headache remedy to obtain migraine headache relief. They are worried about the long-term consequences that can occur from taking potentially harmful and addictive drugs. Discover 6 migraine headache remedies that have proven effective for many sufferers of migraine headaches.

When searching for an effective migraine headache remedy you will come across two main types. They will either be intended to give you immediate migraine headache relief or they will be designed to change or correct a problem or behavior that can lead to long-term relief. The following 6 methods include both types and have proven effective for many migraine headache sufferers.

1 – Biofeedback therapy

One migraine headache remedy that has shown great results for many years is biofeedback. Relieving stress is usually a great way to reduce headache symptoms, and controlling stress and tension is what biofeedback was designed for. It is not actually a form of treatment, but is a training method used to control the autonomic nervous system.

Functions that are normally automatic can be controlled consciously. By using biofeedback it is possible to learn how to control autonomic functions such as muscle relaxation, heart rate, and blood pressure. Controlling these functions can lead to muscle relaxation and migraine headache relief. Once trained, a person using biofeedback techniques can produce the desired effect of relaxation any time they feel a headache coming on.

2 – Chiropractic treatment

When it comes to obtaining migraine headache relief there are not too many methods that have shown greater results than chiropractic manipulation. Many research studies have shown that chiropractic spinal adjustments have helped over 80% of headache sufferers. It can often eliminate a headache with a single treatment, but the real benefit of chiropractic is over the long term. Many patients show long-term relief with regular chiropractic care.

Chiropractors teach us that spinal misalignments will cause irritation to the spinal nerves which will eventually lead to muscle spasms and other symptoms. By correcting these misalignments it is possible to get relief from these symptoms. When muscle spasms occur they will usually cause pain and reducing muscle spasms can eliminate pain. Chiropractic manipulation has the ability to relieve muscle spasms and thereby eliminate the pain caused by the spasms.

3 – Nutritional therapy

Niacin or niacinamide can be ingested to increase dilation of blood vessels. Niacin, known as vitamin B3, will cause a person to flush if taken in sufficient amounts and can be a bit uncomfortable for some. Due to the increased blood flow to the epidermis it can result in a warm itchy sensation. For this reason, many people choose to take niacinamide which does not cause as much of a flush. This can often cause a relaxed feeling and lead to a reduction in symptoms.

4 – Relax in a warm bath or dark room

Migraines are often accompanied by light and auditory sensitivities and lying down in a quiet dark room is a good way to eliminate the pain caused by these sensations. Additionally, strenuous activities will increase the throbbing pain of migraine headaches so relaxing is a great migraine headache remedy that can relieve pain caused by excessive activity.

Another way to relax is by taking a hot bath. This works by increasing the blood flow to the body instead of the head. Increased blood flow to the head will increase the feeling of pressure and lead to an increase in pain. When your body is heated by the water the blood will have a tendency to move away from the head and toward the body which can result in pain relief.

5 – Ice packs

Another migraine headache remedy is to place an ice pack on the back of the neck at the base of the skull. This lessens blood flow to the head, which in turn reduces the amount of pressure felt in the head, causing a reduction in the throbbing pain. Putting your feet in warm water will increase the effect by drawing the blood toward your feet and away from your head. A damp wash cloth should be placed between the skin and the ice pack as a barrier to prevent the skin from becoming too cold.

6 – Find and eliminate food allergies

If a specific food causes a migraine it is called a migraine trigger. A great migraine headache remedy is to find food triggers and eliminate them if they exist. This is done by keeping a headache journal that includes everything you eat and when you eat it. You will also keep track of when any headache symptoms appear. It may take several months, but over time you will eventually be able to pinpoint which foods are causing your symptoms. Common food triggers are wheat, nuts, cheese, caffeine, chocolate, dairy products, citrus fruits, avocados, and legumes, but there are many more.

10 Tips for Getting Natural Migraine Relief Fast

In spite of what some people may think pain killers are not the only way to stop migraine headaches. It is often possible to achieve natural migraine relief without resorting to dangerous or addictive pain medications. And many natural approaches for relieving migraine headaches can even be more effective than drugs, especially over the long term.

Most people realize that pain medications can often cause unwanted symptoms, some of which may be worse than the pain they are intended to relieve. For this reason more people are searching for natural migraine relief as an alternative to consuming potentially harmful pain killers. There are many natural migraine relief options, but they won’t all work for everyone. Some may work for some people while others may work for other people.

If you experience migraine headaches and do not find relief from the first natural treatment method you try, do not get discouraged. It may take awhile to find one that works for you. And there is no reason you cannot try several approaches at the same time. Sometimes a combination of these treatment options will help more than a single approach. Here are 10 methods that may help you achieve natural migraine relief.

1 – Lie down in a dark room. Relaxing in a dark room can accomplish two things. Many migraine sufferers are sensitive to bright light so lying down in a dark room will eliminate pain caused by this light sensitivity. Additionally, the more you move around the faster your heart will beat, causing an increase in the throbbing pain. Lying still can help relieve the throbbing pain caused by excessive movement or activity.

2 – Avoid bright light. Even if you cannot find a nice quiet place to lie down it will still help if you can eliminate the bright light.

3 – Place a cold wash cloth or ice pack on the back of the neck at the base of the skull. This will decrease the amount of blood flow to the head which can help relieve the pain. When using an ice pack be sure to place a thin moist barrier between the skin and the ice. This can be some damp paper towels or cloth. Additionally, putting your feet into a bucket of warm water can help move the blood toward your feet and away from your head. This is a great way to achieve natural migraine relief.

4 – Place a cold wash cloth or ice pack on your forehead or temples. You can increase the effect by placing your feet in warm water as stated above.

5 – Take a warm bath or shower. This is another way to increase blood flow to your body instead of your head. It also has the added benefit of relaxing muscles which can also provide natural migraine relief.

6 – Massage tight muscles. Gently rub any muscles of the neck, shoulders, face, and head using the pads of your fingers. Be firm, but gentle, and rub in a circular motion.

7 – Avoid stressful situations. If a specific activity is increasing your tension, cancel that activity. Reducing worries and anxiety can help provide natural migraine relief.

8 – Take niacin. There are two types that are commonly available: niacin (vitamin B3) and niacinamide. Niacin, taken in sufficient amounts, will cause a person to flush (turn red) which in turn will cause an overall warm feeling and possible itchiness. The usual flush and itchiness can be a small price to pay for migraine headache relief. Niacinamide is similar to niacin, but will not cause as much of a flush.

9 – Stimulate pressure points. There are two pressure points located just below the base of the skull, one on each side of the spine and about 2 or 3 inches apart. Either press or squeeze these two areas to release endorphins. This can often help relief pain.

10 – Do not exercise. Any strenuous activity or exercise can increase the throbbing pain. By avoiding exercise you will be able to avoid the pain caused by it.

The purpose of most of these tips is to decrease the amount of blood flow to the head. When the blood vessels of the head dilate (become larger) it causes headache pain. Decreasing the flow of blood to the head can reduce the amount of pressure and thereby relieve the symptoms of migraine headaches.

A migraine headache is a primary headache disorder lasting from 4 hours to several days. It is the most common cause of recurring headaches where the severity is moderate to severe. Up to 60% of migraine sufferers have symptoms that occur before the actual migraine pain. These symptoms will last anywhere from a few hours to a few days and can include irritability, depression, fatigue, sleepiness, mood changes, loss of appetite, or nausea.

Typical migraine headache symptoms occur sporadically or incidentally, meaning they are intermittent in nature. The pain is typically an intense throbbing, pulsating, or pounding physical pain and often involves only one temple, meaning it is unilateral in nature. About one third of the time the pain is felt on both sides. The unilateral migraines will typically switch sides from one migraine attack to the next, but if the pain always occurs on the same side, one should consider the possibility that it’s a secondary headache or brain tumor.

The physical pain is usually exacerbated by exercise such as running, walking upstairs, or other vigorous activity. Episodes can be accompanied by symptoms other than head pain and can include light sensitivity, visual disturbances, increased sensitivity to smells, abnormal tastes, or auditory (hearing) hallucinations.

Auras occur in roughly 20-25% of migraine sufferers and most often appear just before the headache symptoms, although occasionally during or afterward. Auras will usually last from a few minutes to an hour in length and are temporary neurological disorders that most commonly appear as visual disturbances. However, auras can also affect balance, muscle coordination, and speech. The term for this sensation is “migraine with aura.”

The visual sensations typically occur as flashes of light, but can also be brightly colored lights in a zigzagging pattern which most commonly start in the middle of the visual field and then move outwards. Blind spots, or holes in the visual field, can also be experienced occasionally. Migraine sufferers often find relief lying in a dark quiet room.

Numbness and tingling in various parts of the body are other sensations that can appear with migraines with aura, although they are less common. This is typically a “pins and needles” feeling in the arm and hand on one side and possibly around the mouth or nose on the same side. Problem with speech can also be associated with migraines with aura.

In addition to auras there are other symptoms that can be experienced with migraine pain. These include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of facial color, and cold hands or feet. It’s not unusual for a migraine sufferer to experience a decrease in energy for about 24 hours after a migraine attack and a recurrence of the headache can occasionally happen during this period.

There are additional symptoms that occasionally accompany migraine, but they happen rarely. Basilar artery migraine can cause vertigo (the sensation of dizziness), ataxia (loss of coordination of the muscles, especially in the arms or legs), and an altered level of consciousness or euphoria (an exaggerated feeling of happiness, confidence, or well-being).

About 3 out of 4 people, or 75%, who experience migraine attacks are women. Migraine commonly begins between the age of puberty and young adulthood and then diminishes after the approximate age of 50. In between these ages migraine attacks will increase and decrease in frequency and severity.

Episodic migraine can often develop into chronic migraine. According to the International Headache Society chronic migraines are migraine headaches that occur at least 15 days per month for at least 3 months.

Nobody likes feeling pain, especially when it’s severe. And migraine sufferers know as well as anyone that there’s nothing like a severe migraine headache. Severe pounding in the temples is not the only pain migraines produce. Migraine attacks can be accompanied by a varied assortment of pain and neurological disorders including nausea, vomiting, neck pain, problems with muscle coordination, light sensitivity, auditory hallucinations, visual disturbances, increased sensitivity to smells, abnormal tastes, vertigo, dizziness, numbness and tingling in the extremities or face, diarrhea, loss of facial color, cold hands or feet, speech disturbances, and other unpleasant sensations.

So what can be done to eliminate this often unbearable pain? How can you get the migraine headache relief you so desperately want? Fortunately, there are many good natural solutions available that are often more effective for treating headaches than prescription or over-the-counter medications. One of the best solutions is stress reduction.

Stress is caused by any change in your environment that requires you to respond or adjust to the situation and is one of the most common triggers of migraines. It is also one of the major contributing factors to many other diseases and disorders. This makes eliminating mental pressure a vital component of relieving pain. It is generally accepted that migraine sufferers do not cope as well as others when confronted with stressful circumstances.

Everyone encounters tension or dangerous situations at some point in their life and our bodies have a natural reaction in these situations. When confronted with a stressful event our bodies instantly produce chemicals that prepare us for fighting or running away. This is called the “fight or flight” response. This response can produce blood vessel changes that cause migraine headaches. Mental strain can build up over time or come on suddenly. Chronic headaches, if stress related, are usually caused by daily influences such as job pressure, job loss, marriage problems, health concerns, pregnancy, heavy traffic, confrontations, accidents, or money problems.

There are many methods for treating tension including stress management techniques, biofeedback therapy, medications, and others. Medications are typically for short term relief while stress management techniques can often be more effective over the long term. Realizing that mental pressure is a major contributing factor of headaches, the next question becomes “how can I reduce my stress?”

People getting too little sleep are more susceptible to stress, and therefore an important step in lessening mental tension is getting the proper amount of rest. Other ways to reduce stress and achieve migraine headache relief include taking a warm bath or shower, taking a nap, or getting regular exercise. Taking a bath or a nap can help relieve pain while you’re currently suffering from migraine pain, but to benefit from exercise you must do it on a regular basis. Exercising during a migraine episode can actually exacerbate the symptoms.

Another stress reduction method is massage and can be performed either by you or someone else. With a steady rotating pressure, gently rub the painful area of your head with your fingers. Rubbing your neck and upper back can also help relieve muscle tension. Applying ice to the base of the neck is another good way to reduce the pressure in your head because it lessens the blood flow. Be aware that you should never place ice directly on your head or neck. There should be a thin barrier placed between the ice and your body. The barrier will usually be a damp cloth (thin towel, t-shirt, etc.) or paper towels.

There are many ways to cope with stress, and it’s usually imperative that you change a few things in your life if you want to enjoy relief from migraine headaches. Lessening tension can be achieved in many ways. These include asking others for help in tough situations, maintaining emotionally supporting family relationships, changing or distancing yourself from the source of your stress, maintaining your composure during emotional situations, eating healthy meals, eliminating bad habits such as smoking, drinking, or taking drugs, and exercising regularly.

Your self-esteem also plays a vital role in the amount of pressure you feel. People that like themselves generally feel less mental pressure. Reading self-help or self-esteem-building books can boost your sense of self-worth which can lessen your anxieties. Lowering your stress is more a process than a single event. Eliminating bad habits, exercising regularly, getting the proper amount of sleep, and eating healthily are all processes that should be constants in your life, not periodic events. If achieving migraine headache relief is important to you, start thinking about ways to reduce your stress. By changing just a few bad habits it may be possible to change your entire life.

Tension headaches are the most common type of headache and are also referred to as stress headaches. They normally come on gradually and may last anywhere from an hour or less to several days. They can appear occasionally or be chronic. If they occur 15 days or more per month they are classified as chronic.

Unlike the name implies, this type of headache is not always caused by stress, but can be the end result of other disorders causing the head and neck muscles to spasm. Due to these factors they are commonly referred to as tension-type headaches.

Tension-type headaches are marked by a mild to moderate pain of variable duration that affects both sides of the head and are typically accompanied by contraction of neck and scalp muscles. They often give sufferers the sensation of having a tight band wrapped around their head, causing much pressure. Unlike migraine headaches they do not affect vision, balance, equilibrium, or muscle strength and do not keep sufferers from performing normal daily tasks.

There are countless causes for stress headaches, but in many people they appear to be caused by muscle tightness or spasms in the back of the neck and scalp. Muscle tightness can have many causes including poor posture, emotional stress, depression, anxiety, not enough sleep, hunger, fatigue, and strenuous activity. To break it down further, emotional stress, depression, and anxiety can be the result of job stress, marital troubles, illness, money troubles, or an assortment of other complications of life.

Chiropractors believe that these headaches are not always caused by tension or stress, but can be symptoms or the end result of tension in the spinal cord or spinal nerves. Research by Dr. Alf Brieg, M.D., a Nobel Prize winning neurosurgeon, shows that as a person’s neck bends forward it lessens or reverses the normal cervical lordosis (neck curve), creating a reversed neck curvature. The reversed neck curvature causes stretching of the spinal cord and spinal nerve roots, creating tension in the spinal cord and spinal nerve roots. In other words, it’s the poor neck posture that causes the muscles to spasm in an effort to protect the neck from moving further forward and irritating the spinal cord even more. These muscle spasms are one of the body’s natural protective mechanisms, trying to prevent further irritation or damage to the spinal cord.

This increased tension or tightening in the neck muscles, spinal nerves and spinal cord, caused by an excessive forward position of the head in relation to the body, causes stretching and irritation in the spinal cord and nerve roots which can result in tension headaches, neck pain, or other health problems and conditions.

Chiropractors teach us that by reversing this poor neck posture it’s possible to relax the neck muscles, which can decrease the stretching in the spinal cord and nerve roots and help stop the pain associated with it.

In addition to chiropractic treatment there are many other forms of treatment. Over-the-counter pain killers and muscle relaxants are the treatment choice of many, but there are other well-accepted natural treatments that can actually be more effective than pain killers over the long term.

Relaxation training and stress management techniques are often successful in relieving tension-type headaches. Another method for controlling muscle spasms is Biofeedback. This is not actually a treatment, but a training program used to develop a person’s ability to control certain autonomic nervous system functions. A body normally controls functions such as blood pressure, breathing, and heart rate automatically. These functions are taken care of whether a person thinks about them or not. However, with biofeedback training it becomes possible for a person to develop a measure of control over some of these autonomic functions including muscle relaxation.

There are many good natural headache treatments available today that can even be more effective over the long term than continually popping pain pills. However, there is no one single treatment that will work for everybody. Some work better than others, but if one treatment works for one person there is no guarantee it’ll work for another. If you suffer from headaches it’s important to keep searching until a treatment method is found that will work for you.

You are a chronic headache sufferer and want to eliminate your painful recurring symptoms. So what can you do to solve your problem? The first step in fighting headaches is determining which type of headache you suffer from, because your headache treatment will vary based on this determination. There are primary headaches where the headaches themselves are the sole problems and there are secondary headaches where the pain is a symptom of some other health condition or disease. It’s important to figure out which type you have and this is best determined by your signs and symptoms.

Since tension headaches are the most common type, chances are good that this is what you have been suffering from. A tension-type headache often feels like you have a very tight band wrapped around your head, causing pressure or a dull achy feeling. Tension-type headaches are not only caused by stress, but if you have tension due to a high-stress job, marriage problems, a recent job loss, pregnancy, money problems, or some other problem in your life, your pain may be tension related. However, these are not the only causes of tension-type headaches. Eye strain or neck strain from sitting at a computer all day can result in this type of pain too.

Most people treat their tension headaches with over-the-counter medication such as Tylenol (acetaminophen), ibuprofen (Advil and Motrin), or aspirin, but there are natural treatments that can actually be more effective over the long term. If you’re an easily stressed person, you may want to consider relaxation or stress management techniques. These can go a long way to solving the problem instead of treating the symptoms. It may also be beneficial to lie on a cervical (neck) pillow that had been designed to restore the proper and normal curvature to your neck, thereby relaxing muscles that are contributing to the pain. The Soothe-A-Ciser Headache Relief Pillow is the best pillow I know of for this purpose. It has been a staple in chiropractic offices for almost 20 years.

Migraine headaches are often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, light sensitivity, sound sensitivity, and auras. Auras are most commonly visual disturbances that manifest themselves as flashes of light or zigzagging patterns of light. They usually occur on just one side of the head and are a throbbing pain. Exercise or strenuous activity such as walking upstairs or running may exacerbate the pulsing and pounding in your head.

Prescription medications are often sought after by migraine sufferers, but again, there are some natural headache treatment methods that may work just as well. Due to the sensitivity of light and sound, it is usually beneficial to lie down in a quiet dark room. Cold compresses placed at the base of the skull can often reduce the pressure in the head by lessening the amount of blood flow. Massage is another way to relieve the tight muscles. Either do it yourself or have someone else rub your temples in a circular fashion to relieve the pain. Another great approach is chiropractic treatment. Chiropractors have a very high success rate in relieving migraine headaches.

Cluster headaches can be very intense and recur off and on for weeks or months at a time. They will most commonly last anywhere from 15 minutes up to a few hours and the pain typically comes on strong without any warning signs, reaching a peak within just a few minutes. These are unilateral, so if your headache is bilateral, it’s probably not a cluster. They are rare, with estimates of occurrence somewhere between 0.1% and 1% in adults. Over-the-counter pain relievers usually aren’t effective due to the fact that these headaches can come on suddenly and then vanish just as quickly. Preventive medications are probably the most common treatment approach here.

It may surprise you to learn that many headaches are actually caused by the very pain medications that are supposed to eliminate them. That’s right. The pain killers you’re taking may actually be promoting your chronic headaches. Headaches of this sort are often referred to as rebound headaches.

According to Paul Duckro, associate professor of psychiatry at St. Louis University, “the best thing a person with chronic headaches can do is get off the painkillers.” His studies showed that two-thirds of the chronic headache sufferers not only didn’t get rid of their headaches with the medications they were taking, but that their headaches increased in severity as a result of the analgesics themselves. These can be pain killers such as ibuprofen, the pain-relieving ingredient in Advil and Motrin IB, aspirin, and acetaminophen, the analgesic in Tylenol. This does not mean you should quit taking medication that has been prescribed by your doctor. It’s always a good idea to see a qualified physician before making decisions that can be detrimental to your health.

Sometimes headaches are merely symptoms of serious underlying health conditions and should be evaluated by a qualified doctor immediately. If you have a sudden onset of a severe headache you should seek emergency help immediately. If you experience a headache after a fall or injury it can also signify a serious problem. If you are taking over-the-counter pain killers, but the pain continues to worsen, you should seek an emergency evaluation. Other reasons to seek out emergency help are when the headache is accompanied by fever, stiff neck, difficulty speaking, double vision, mental confusion, seizures, or any other abnormal occurrence.

Most headaches are painful, but are not indications of serious health problems. However, if the pain is disrupting your personal life in any way, you should consider developing a plan to combat the problem. Headaches can often be prevented once you have determined its type and have developed a sensible headache treatment plan.

The following are excerpts from documentation found at:

http://www.chiroweb.com/archives/09/12/16.html

Nerve tissues that are stretched to a certain very small extent (noted in the text as “perhaps only imperceptibly lengthened”) are extremely liable to lose their conductivity. “This has been verified by, among others, neurological surgeons, who have observed that critical tension of nerve fibers abolishes their conductivity and that their conductivity can be restored by relaxation of the fibers, as long as they are basically undamaged.” This passage is from the most recent monograph but is referenced in the previous two as well as in many other papers on anatomy and physiology.

So far, we have found, objectively, that pressing on a nerve stretches the nerve and reduces its ability to carry nerve impulses (conductivity).

The next major fact contributing proof to the subluxation complex theory is the entire thrust of Dr. Breig’s objective experimentation which is that ventroflexion of the spinal column stretches the nerve tissue in the spinal cord and nerve roots (especially where there are firm attachments of the nerve tissue and meningeal sheaths to the spinal column at the occipitocervical spine region craniad and the lumbar spine-sacrum caudad), resulting in reduced conductivity, leading to neurological symptoms and damage to nerve tissue in the central nervous system. Dorsiflexion (extension) of the spinal column (not hyperextension) relaxes the nerve tissue of the brainstem, spinal cord (pons cord tract), and nerve roots relieving the axial stretching of the neurons returning normal conductivity of nerve impulses, which relieves the symptoms and neurologically induced dysfunction.

Now we have, objectively, from Dr. Brieg’s work: Pressing on a nerve stretches the nerve; stretching the nerve reduces its ability to carry nerve impulses (conductivity); and if the nerve is not damaged, taking the stretch off the nerve will relieve the symptoms and restore normal nerve function.

This means that any biomechanical problems that increase spinal flexion, thus increasing axial stretch on nerve tissue, will usually cause neurological symptoms or make them worse. Anything done to relieve the flexion and stretching will relieve the symptoms and restore normal nerve function where there is no permanent damage to the nerves themselves. This is subluxation complex theory.

In Adverse Tension in the Central Nervous System, which is a manual for surgically setting the cervical spine in slight extension to slacken the pons cord tract, as well as researched and objectively documented explanation of the effect on neurological tissue, Dr. Breig identifies cord myelopathies, rhizopathies, neurogenic urinary incontinence, respiratory insufficiencies, cerebral palsy, various neurogenic painful spasticities, even multiple sclerosis and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) as all being successfully treatable by spinal cord relaxation.

The second project involved studying the effects of compression on spinal nerve roots. Seth Sharpless, Ph.D., Marvin Luttges, Ph.D., and their colleagues demonstrated that minuscule amounts of pressure on a nerve root (10mm Hg, equal to a feather falling on your hand), resulted in up to a 50 percent decrease in electrical transmission down the course of the nerve supplied by that root. Chiropractors have long claimed that minimal pressure on nerves could have a significant physiological impact. This study gave credence to such claims and offered a promising path for future research.

The theory that nerve pressure causes dis-ease has been a mainstay of the chiropractic profession for over one hundred years – and continues today as the basis for finding and correcting vertebral AND cranial subluxations. At the University of Colorado in the ’70s, Dr. Chung Ha Suh demonstrated that, at the spinal nerve root level, a sustained pressure increase of only 10 mm H2O was adequate to produce interference in normal nerve transmission. This is in the very low range of what neurologists have considered “normal” when discussing ICP (Normal = 0 to 15 mm Hg). If the amount of increased ICP necessary to maintain inflammation is even several times this level, it would still fall below the medical intervention threshold.

THE WINSOR AUTOPSIES

Henry Winsor, a medical doctor in Haverford, Pennsylvania asked the question: “Chiropractors claim that by adjusting one vertebra, they can relieve stomach troubles and ulcers; by adjusting another, menstrual cramps; and by adjusting others conditions such as kidney diseases, constipation, heart disease, thyroid conditions, and lung disease may resolve – but how?”

Dr. Winsor decided to investigate this new science and art of healing-chiropractic.

DISSECTIONS

After graduating from medical school, Dr. Winsor was inspired by chiropractic and osteopathic literature to experiment. He planned to dissect human and animal cadavers to see if there was a relationship between any diseased internal organ discovered on autopsy and the vertebrae associated with the nerves that went to the organ. As he wrote:

“The object of these necropsies (dissections) was to determine whether any connection existed between minor curvatures of the spine, on the one hand, and diseased organs on the other; or whether the two were entirely independent of each other.”

UNIVERSITY PERMISSION

The University of Pennsylvania gave Dr. Winsor permission to carry out his experiments. In a series of three studies he dissected a total of seventy-five human and twenty-two cat cadavers. The following are Dr. Winsor’s results:

“221 structures other than the spine were found diseased. Of these, 212 were observed to belong to the same sympathetic (nerve) segments as the vertebrae in curvature. Nine diseased organs belonged to different sympathetic segments from the vertebrae out of line. These figures cannot be expected to exactly coincide…for an organ may receive sympathetic filaments from several spinal segments and several organs may be supplied with sympathetic (nerve) filaments from the same spinal segments. In other words, there was nearly a 100% correlation between minor curvatures of the spine and diseases of the internal organs.”

Let us examine some of these disease categories:
* Stomach Diseases
All nine cases of spinal misalignment in the mid-thoracic area (T5-T9) had stomach disease.
* Lung Disease
All twenty-six cases of lung disease had spinal misalignments in the upper thoracic spine.
* Liver Disease
All thirteen cases of liver disease had misalignments in the mid thoracic (T5-T9)
* Gallstones
All five cases with gallstone disease had spinal misalignments in the mid thoracic.
* Pancreas
All three cases with pancreas disease had spinal misalignments in the mid thoracics.
* Spleen
All eleven cases with spleen diseases had spinal misalignments in the mid thoracics.
* Kidney
All seventeen cases with kidney disease were out of alignment in the lower thoracics.
* Prostate and Bladder Disease
All eight cases with kidney prostate and bladder disease had the lumbar (L2-L3) vertebrae misaligned
* Uterus
The two cases with the uterine conditions had the second lumbar misaligned.
* Heart Disease
All twenty cases with heart and pericardium conditions had the upper five thoracic vertebrae (T1-T5) misaligned.

IN CONCLUSION

Dr. Winsor’s results are published in The Medical Times and are found in any medical library. Winsor was not alone in his findings. Similar studies by other researchers have confirmed Dr. Winsor’s conclusion that degenerated and misaligned spines have a high correlation with disease processes.

Despite the continued research and literature correlating the maintenance of health with the maintenance of the spine and the nervous system, chiropractic is the only modern health profession that takes this approach toward health. An unhealthy spine and nerve pressure will cause the body to function at less than 100%. When the body is not functioning properly, it is more susceptible to disease. A chiropractic spinal check-up and adjustment can help in the care and prevention of sickness and disease through a properly functioning nervous system.

POST-SCRIPT

Dr. Henry Winsor’s insights and research are prophetic. Scientists from many parts of the world that continued to research the relationship between spinal misalignments (vertebral subluxation complex) and internal organ disease have expanded upon his studies. This field of somato-visceral disease relationship (its scientific term) is one of the fastest growing and most exciting areas of research in the health care sciences – and chiropractic thrives as its leading advocate.

The age of the study quoted is intentional to illustrate that the notion of health correlating with integrity of the spinal column was as true 80 years ago as it still is today.

In a book that has attracted a fair amount of attention, the Scandinavian neurosurgeon Alf Breig introduced the concept of Adverse Mechanical Tensions in the Central Nervous System. The tenet of this theory is the fact that the dura mater of the spinal cord is mechanically attached to the bony structures of the vertebra at the cervical and sacral levels, so that, say, vertebral misalignment can create pathological tensions on the spinal cord, themselves impairing nerve activity. There is evidence that there is direct attachment of the spinal dura to nearby osseous structures at the C2-C3 level.

Tensions in the spinal cord induce hyperstimulation of the proprioceptive fibers afferent to the spine, resulting in impaired functionality of the spine at the attachment level and other effects at other parts of the nervous system. It has been argued by Breig that some diseases have this biomechanical origin and that relief of these adverse tensions could alleviate symptoms.

“At its cranial extremity the spinal dura mater is attached to the circumference of the foramen magnum, and at its caudal end it is anchored to the coccyx by the filum terminale. When the trunk is fully flexed the dura is under tension, as is also the cord, and stretching occurs. Part of this tension is transmitted from the dura mater via the dentate ligaments to the pia mater, but by far the larger component of the tension is set up directly in the cord by virtue of its anchorage at its two extremities, namely the brain stem and the cauda equina.”

“In extension of the spine from the neutral posture, the axis of the spinal canal, and hence that of the tract, is shortened and the tissue slackens and folds. When the neutral posture is assumed the tract recovers its original length, the slack is taken up and the folds are eliminated. In flexion, in which the length of the canal is increased, the tract is stretched elastically. During these spinal movements the axons and blood-vessels of the spinal cord undergo deformation similar to that of the cord as a whole.”

“The magnitude of the tension in the cord depends firstly on the anatomical factor of body posture, which determines the relative lengths of the spinal canal and cord. Under physiological conditions with the column flexed the cord is in a state of normal pre-tension. On this will be imposed any tension of pathological origin. The total tension induced may well lead to neural dysfunction, and then the involved nerve fibers in the cord or nerve-roots may be said to be over-stretched. The most significant consequence of over-stretching nerve-fibers is impairment of their conductivity.”

“… excessive tension in the cord may produce measurable changes in motor, sensory and autonomic function. These are accentuated whenever the cord is stretched, and may be reversed, and the symptoms relieved, if stretching can be eliminated and the affected tissues are kept relaxed.”

“I have found that many neurological disorders in which no mechanical component has ever been suspected do in fact have their origin in tension in the nervous tissue …”

“…analyses have shown that tension in the nervous tissue that gives rise to symptoms is characterized by focal deformation of its complex three-dimensional fiber network as seen in histological and microangiographical sections. It was evident that an important cause of functional disturbance both of the axis-cylinders and the blood vessels lies in the reduction in their cross-sectional area resulting from tension. By slackening the nervous tissue the tension is relieved and the conductivity and circulation are restored.”

Committee in Postgraduate Medical Education, Kennsington, NSW, Aust; 1982: The evidence that the neck plays a critical role in posture is overwhelming. Muscle receptors may be of great importance in sensing joint position. A characteristic of neck muscles is an abundance of muscle spindles. The spindle density in large muscles of the neck range from 46-106/gm, among the highest of anywhere. High spindle density is characteristic of muscle executing fine motor control. The abundance of afferent information may not only be due to fine motor control. Polysynaptic pathways from neck muscle afferents to neck motoneurons are powerful. Afferents leaving neck muscles can exert profound effects on hindlimb motoneuron excitability. The neck structures are unusually rich in receptors. Small muscles close to the cervical vertebrae may have up to 500 muscle spindles/gm, a density almost 100 times as great as some muscles of locomotion and 5 times greater than the large dorsal neck muscles which are regarded as spindle rich. These deep structures play an important role in reflexes and maintenance of posture and provide precise information with respect to position.

Tissue Overload leads to Tissue Injury

Biomechanical insult – stretching, tearing, crushing, compression results in the breakage of molecular bonds and the release of chemical mediators.

Chemical Mediators – histamine, serotonin, bradykinin, substance P, prostaglandins, acids. Substance P and prostaglandins cause sensitization: lowering the threshold of nociceptors so that they fire in response to innocuous normal movement and weight bearing.

Saal, MD. Spine 1995;20(16):1821-1827
Inflammation results in the release of algesic substances which cause sensitization of annular or peridiscal nociceptors and their threshold is lowered. Physical loading within the normal physiological range of the disc (e.g., sitting) will result in lower back pain and or extremity pain in the absence of radiculopathy. This neuronal activation results in ongoing generation of back or radicular pain from mechanical forces well within the physiological range of the tissues.

Peripheral Sensitization. Cavanaugh, MD. Spine 1995;20(16):1804-1809
Peripheral nerve endings become sensitized by chemical mediators released during tissue damage and inflammation. Normal motion may become painful with neurogenic inflammation. Tissue damage can cause prolonged nociceptive excitation contributing to a cycle including muscle spasm and hyperalgesia which can lead to persistent pain.

Etiology of Symptoms with injury. Tissue Overload, acute or gradual, leads to tissue damage and the release of chemical mediators resulting in 1) Inflammation and swelling which restrict motion, 2) Pain and Sensitization of Nociceptors which restricts motion, 3) nocifensive Reflexes – Pain Spasm Reflexes which restrict motion. These responses lead to the classic clinical symptoms of: Swelling, Pain, Muscle spasm, Restriction of motion, and Loss of normal function because normal movement and weight bearing are painful due to sensitization of nociceptors.

1. Abstract. Posture and normal physiology and function are inter-related. Abnormal posture is evident in patients with chronic pain-related conditions including backache, headache, and stress-related illnesses. Posture training and gravity-centered breathing may play a role in comprehensive treatment of patients with chronic pain and stress-related problems.

2. Despite considerable evidence that posture affects physiology and function, the significant influence of posture on health is not addressed by most physicians.

Observations of the striking influence of postural mechanics on function and symptomatology have led to our hypothesis that posture affects and moderates every physiologic function from breathing to hormonal production. Spinal pain, headache, mood, blood pressure, pulse, and lung capacity are among the functions most easily influenced by posture.

3. Optimal adult human posture is generally considered to include lordosis of the lumbar and cervical spine…

4. Posture affects all human function, both consciously and unconsciously, from breathing to thinking.

Biomechanics of the Central Nervous System. Dr. Alf Brieg, MD.
Origin of Tension in the Cord. PP. 555-569.

1. The biomechanical observations on the central nervous system provide an explanation of how it may suffer injury through the various pathologic processes of the spinal column, dura, pia, cord and nerves, for all these different processes can have the same outcome, namely, an increase in the axial tension in the hind brain, cord and associated nerves in forward and lateral flexion of the spine.

Of some clinical importance is the finding that the cord and its nerves slacken in dorsal extension. The greatest effect of the shortening and consequent slackening of the cord is found in dorsal extension of the cervical spine. In this position the cord behaves as a slack line that is compressed axially. Any part of the cord and its nerves can then be moved quite freely. It is known from experience that in many cases of, for instance, brachialgia, the symptoms vanish when a small round bolster (cushion) is laid under the neck so that the head is flexed backwards.

2. It is now possible to render the cord slack by simply placing the patient so that the cervical spine is in dorsal extension.

3. It has more recently been the author’s practice in cases of acute traumatic impairment of the cord to place the patient in the supine position with the head and cervical spine fixed in dorsal extension. This may be a suitable conservative treatment for cases of cord and nerve root injury.

4. In the change from the maximum positions of lordosis and kyphosis of the whole spine the cord undergoes an average change in length of 4.5 to 7.5 cm measured from the mesencephalon to the conus medullaris along the dorsal aspect of the cord.

5. It was found that all processes that lead to an increased axial tension in the tract can cause damage to the cord and the spinal nerves by overstretching the nerve fibres. This pathogenetic principle seems to apply to most cases of impairment of the cord tissue and the spinal nerves due to movement of the column.

6. The conditions under which a pathologic axial tension may be set up in the neuroparenchyma can generally be ascribed to a change in the relative lengths of the spinal canal and the cord in ventroflexion.

7. The view that a pathologically increased tension in the cerebral nerves in the posterior fossa can be the cause of symptoms deriving from these nerves is supported by the clinical observations.

8. In ventroflexion of the spinal column, the spinal canal is elongated and the continuous tissue tract consisting of the hind brain, medulla oblongata, cord, and associated cerebral and spinal nerves is pulled taut and undergoes a uniform elongation between its points of fixation in the mesencephalon and the lumbosacral ganglia. As a consequence of this lengthening, there is a reduction in the cross-sectional area of the hind brain, the cord and the nerves.

Limitations of Spinal Manipulation. CBP Volume V. Donald D. Harrison, MS, DC. PP. 19-24and 274-281.

1. Abnormal postures, structural deviations from vertical gravity, (which we call subluxation or subluxation complex), cause deformations, abnormal stress and bending moments in the spine. These bending moments cause electromagnetic fields to be created.

These electrical magnetic fields interfere with the nervous system electricity.

F.R. Carrick studied cervical radiculopathy in 1983. He concluded “that abberancies of the coupling mechanisms in the cervical spine are pathological and can be associated with neurological defects.

2. Improper spinal mechanics has been shown to be the cause of headaches. Spinal proprioceptive dysfunction was a proposed mechanism for causing migraine headaches and other disease conditions.

3. Proprioceptive nerves are sensory nerve terminals which give information concerning movements and position of the body. They are found in muscle, tendons and the labyrith. Abnormal posture causes a compression of the joints on one side which stimulates the proprioceptors to fire. On the other side there is tension created in the muscles and tendons which also causes the proprioceptive nerves to fire. In studies performed by Irvin Korr he found that these proprioceptors even continue to fire when the person was horizontal to gravity and at rest.

These constant proprioceptive impulses go to the spinal cord neuron pools creating aberrant spinally organized somatosympathetic reflexes and make synaptic connections that are not ordinarily in use. These are intensified at the entry segment and diminish as we go up or down the cord. These impulses make the other nerves that synaps in the same area of the cord super sensitive and they fire abnormally. This has been proven to cause viscual dysfunction and disease.

Another quite similar mechanism is outlined by Cailliet, MD. Cailliet states “trigger points develop from positional, mechanical, postural or emotional stress.” Cailliet further states “in abnormal posture the body does not compensate, this causes abnormal neuromuscular demands which leads to fatigue and mechanical stress on all elements of the musculoskeletal system. This in turn causes pain, impairment and structural changes.

Constant tension on muscle (by abnormal posture in spinal mechanics) triggers a release of chemicals that cause tissue damage and inflammation from the release of potassium and hydrogen ions and proteolytic enzymes. This in turn causes the formation of trigger points. Constant myofascial pain causes nociceptive stimuli from the mechanoreceptors that originate in the soft tissue, traveling through the peripheral nerve to the spinal cord. This causes super sensitivity in the neuron pools at the spinal cord level resulting in abnormal nerve firing, visceral dysfunction and disease.

4. Poor posture results in musculoskeletal imbalance. Maintenance of upright position of our frames when there is musculoskeletal imbalance requires a counter-balancing effort from our muscles. Chronic postural faults result in chronically increased muscular activity. Results are reduced vascular flow to the affected muscles. Reduced vascular flow leads to internal tissue ischemia and to an accumulation of muscular effort waste metabolites. This hypoxia and retention of metabolites is irritation and triggers an inflammatory response. The inflammation results in fibrosis of the affected muscles. Fibrosis of affected muscles changes the afferent neurological information that begins the cycle of somatoautonomic reflexology.

Chronic postural faults also result in myofascial trigger points. Myofascial trigger points also initiate afferent neurological information that begins the cycle of somatoautonomic reflexology.

There are changes in the function of the autonomic nervous system, including changes in vasomotor activity that are provoked by myofascial irritations and from abnormal postural stresses. Visceral, circulatory, and thermoregulatory functions, controlled by the autonomic nervous system, are continually coupled, in highly organized patterns, to musculoskeletal activity and changes in posture. Efferent activity in the neuromuscular and autonomic pathways, as is well known, is functionally coordinated by the central nervous system.

5. When the head is held ahead of the center of gravity, the relative weight of the head is increased. The average human head weighs between 10 and 12 pounds. For every inch ahead of the center of gravity, this weight is proportionately increased. With the head 3 inches ahead of the center of gravity, the head weighs approximately 30 pounds. This weight is borne by the neck muscles. The acute tissue insults resulting from this posture are essentially muscular and ligamentous. If the posture persists, the weight borne upon the cartilage of the zygapophyseal joints can cause degeneration of the cartilage as well as posterior compression of the disk in the lordotic position. The closed foramina also compress the nerve roots and their dural sacs.

6. There is a relationship between posture and systemic health.

7. The adverse neurological maintenance of these somatovisceral mechanisms are results, not causes; the cause being tissue trauma, tissue stress, or myofascial trigger points, all which are results of abnormal posture.

1. Spinal root nerve cell bodies are found in the dorsal horn (motor cells) and nerve root ganglion (sensory) and the rest of these nerve cells – the axons – are merely transmission cables. It is thus to be expected that problems of compression at source in the spine will appear distally and in target organs.

2. Nerve roots, which have relatively few blood vessels, derive much of their nutrition from the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Nerve root compression may deprive the root of both sources of nutrition and waste removal – blood vessels and CSF – causing ischaemia, fibrotic change, and pain.
