Off to the Races...

After my adventure to the Emerald Downs over a year ago I finally got back out to the paddock albeit a different one. Golden Gate Fields was just as welcoming of cameras in policy but the track layout was not not as user friendly. The apron doesn't extend all the way to the corner of the track so I couldn't get any good head-on shots as the horses came around the bend. The closest point to the bend (I could have used the 500mm instead of 200mm) was also about a foot lower than the track itself making it impossible to keep the rail out of frame.

I think I missed a few shots throughout the day because I chose to shot RAW all day. I know this sounds contradictory to many because they save an exposure because it was RAW but I can't keep the "motor drive" running as long or as fast compared to shooting jpeg. And for the record everything on flickr was converted using camera settings so I didn't gain a thing; this may save me $300 on Light Room 2.

I was really happy to have found this place on my drive. I would love to have the opportunity to try a few more things with this shot; high tide, sunset, I like where the light house is in relation to the right edge but a wider angle to include more rocks on the left would be nice. I might move the frame down for a little more foreground and a little less sky as well. Tough not to second guess yourself two weeks later when you can't remember just how unsightly that railing was...

I like it enough to be my new desktop at work anyway.

Project 365

I've decided to retire from project 365. I've been traveling for work since my last post and haven't taken any pictures. The fact that I'll be moving in a month doesn't help either. It's been an interesting experience that I may undertake again someday but I'm looking forward to my camera being a weekend warrior again. I've deleted the collection and moved all of the pictures into a single set for the 108 days I completed. I do plan to continue this photo blog but obviously with much less frequency.

Yesterday was a sad day on Flickr as they introduced video to the site. The videos are limited to 90 seconds but this will actually eliminate any chance of quality content with such a short time frame. Many Flickr users post instructional videos to YouTube but these are commonly 10 minutes (or longer) , all 90 seconds will allow is clips of stupid people doing stupid things, and countless millions of short videos of kittens playing with string. Both of which I'm sure will be taken via cellphone.

Please join No Video on Flickr and We Say NO to Videos on Flickr to help keep our nice photo community just that.

This deployment should mark the availability of considerable development resources so maybe they can start working on the hundreds of requests Photographers have put in for: added functionality, security, privacy... Unfortunately I renewed my pro account last month so I've got until next spring to see how things pan out but I have a haunting feeling I'll be moving on to a new photo sharing site.

Snoots

My previous two P365 photos took advantage of my new snoots. The first used a 12 inch and the second an 8 inch. Not a great comparison of the differences since it's two pretty different models but the motivations were to get some pictures of the terrain pieces more than anything else. Overall I'm happy with the outcomes and look forward to getting a lot more use out of my new super cheap equipment. Thanks Strobist.

My new Manfrotto 055xProB tripod and 488RC4 Ball head.

Due to past tripod issues I decided to go for the heavy duty super versatile setup first and will consider getting a lighter setup for hiking later. This duo comes in at 8 pounds but has exceptional balance and most importantly I trust it with my camera regardless of which lens is attached. Trips that this is too heavy for my 500mm will be too, so a lighter carbon fiber model will be in order (unsure about the head). And when weight really counts, a blob of silly putty on a rock has always served me well in the past.

My newest edition of a remote release cable for my Sony Alpha. Hopefully this one will last.

I orginally made a remote cable based on Arkku's design only with separate focus and shutter buttons. It worked fine (still does) but is shorter than I wanted and became a pain in the thumb (literally) on long exposures. I found a cheap knockoff of the Sony cable on ebay for $3 + $8 shipping (from Hong Kong) so I gave that a shot and it was great for about 2 weeks until the wire crapped out. The connector wasn't salvageable so I've had to go back to the CD-ROM audio cables dremeled down but I was able reuse the Yongnuo handle and button. I've gone with telephone wire since it's very durable and I have plenty I'll never use. Hopefully it holds up, I get my new Bogen Manfroto tripod & ball head this week.
