an old jean jacket I don’t wear much anymore. I knew these hippie patches could help breathe some new life into an old classic. So I decided to try a DIY Hippie Patch Jacket.

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

• Jacket of your choice (check your local thrift store)
• Soul Flower Hippie Patches or Patches of Your Choice
• An Iron
• A towel and old piece of cloth (I used a fabric napkin)
• A Creative Mind

DIY HIPPIE PATCH JACKET INSTRUCTIONS:

I put all of my iron-on patches in a big pile and just started placing them on the jacket. I knew I wanted to use both the front and the back. It took a while but here is how I visualized the hippie patches on my jacket. (I would say to just play around until you find good hippie vibes)

Once I had a good concept in mind, I got my iron ready on the hottest setting it has (I have an old iron, circa late 1900s, so I figured the hotter, the better. Be sure to test a spot before you go too hot!) I put a thick towel on my counter. I put the jacket on that. Then I placed each hippie patch where I wanted it on the jacket. One by one, I covered each patch with a piece of fabric and held the iron on it for 30-45 seconds. Then I flipped the fabric to the backside and ironed directly on the opposite side to seal it in.

(Soul Flower hippie patches come in this little package, and the back is a handy guide to tell you how to iron on – the instructions worked perfectly!) The instructions suggest stitching the patch for extra security, but I didn’t do that – the ironing-on did the trick for me. I love the retro colors and vibes of the Hippie By Nature Patch, I ended up putting this one on my sleeve.

And here is what I ended up with! This Hippie Patch Jacket was such a simple project with big results and I love the new look of my boring, old jacket. ~Peggy

Many cultures and religions celebrate the spring equinox with ceremonies or festivals. Look for events in your community, or create your own celebration with friends and family.

Eat seasonal foods:

Spring is the season of fresh produce. Take advantage of the abundance of fruits and vegetables by incorporating them into your meals. Some examples of seasonal foods include asparagus, peas, strawberries, and rhubarb.

Meditate or practice yoga:

Take some time to reflect on the season and connect with your inner self. Meditation and yoga can help you find balance and harmony with the energy of the earth.

The spring equinox is a time of new beginnings and renewal. Celebrate the season by spending time in nature, decluttering your home, planting seeds, creating an altar, attending a ceremony or festival, eating seasonal foods, and meditating or practicing yoga. DIY HOLIDAY COCKTAIL – INGREDIENTS

Yields 4 servings 

• 1 Pomegranate
• 1 Braeburn Apple
• 1 heaping cup fresh cranberries
• 1 large sprig Rosemary
• 1 bottle Pinot Grigio (can sub additional White Grape Juice)
• 1/2 cup White Grape Juice
• 2 cups Club Soda

DIY HOLIDAY COCKTAIL – DIRECTIONS

Begin by de-seeding the pomegranate, and chopping the apple into small, bite-sized pieces. Then, fill each glass with an equal mixture of apple, cranberry, pomegranate, and a small sprig of rosemary. These are so pretty already!

Mix all the liquids (EXCEPT THE WINE) in a punch bowl or pitcher. These are the ingredients for the non-alcoholic base for our festive spritzer. Then, if you like, you can individually pour wine into some of the glasses before adding the base.

Top off each glass and toast to a fun new holiday tradition – a festive spritzer!

DIY Boho Wall Hanging: Instructions

Start by selecting a doily and embroidery hoop that are similar in size. Sew the outer edges of the doily to the hoop using thread that’s similar in color. Cut off excess thread.

Select a variety of yarn, ribbons, and string that catches your eye and cut them twice as long as you want them to hang. Fold in half, then tie them in a prusik knot on the embroidery hoop where the metal piece is.

Tie the ends of the yarn, string, and ribbons in knots to deter fraying. Then simply hang your beautiful, simple dream catcher on your wall using a small nail or thumbtack. Enjoy!

I did a search for eco-friendly clothing and my little hippie heart saaaang when I found Soul Flower. My Christmas list literally said EVERYTHING SOUL FLOWER!!

I absolutely love my green patchwork shorts and dream of owning a pair of hippie overalls, a cowl yoga hoody and just all the accessories haha!

Q: What do you do for work?
I am a busser at an Italian restaurant and soon to be working at an adjacent Italian caffe. I am also a lighting technician for live productions.

I grew up washing out and reusing our ziplock bags and have always had a connection with the Earth. The past few years I have really dove deep into it.

Q: What are some of your favorite *simple* eco practices?
I absolutely love thrifting!! Simple things like no ziplock bags or plastic water bottles are actually so much easier than one thinks!!

Q: Any words of advice for our readers on being more eco?
It doesn’t take one person to do it perfectly, it takes millions to do it imperfectly. Don’t beat yourself up for slipping up, give yourself grace!

When you think of a warehouse, you might picture soaring ceilings, cold cement floors, robot forklifts, and stark white walls. But our Soul Flower warehouse —no matter the location— always ends up looking like the best-stocked closet you can imagine!

With rows of colorful clothing on shelves, art and random tapestries on the walls, just a few buds handpicking and packing everything, and good tunes on the airwaves. That’s how we roll!

Top priority when moving in to our new location is setting up the basics needed to get orders out the door. (OK, the speakers gotta get wired up, too, that’s a necessity!) Interior decorating comes later.

Back in 2012, we built our own screenprinting shop right in the warehouse, which has become a welcome hub of essential activity at Soul Flower. Now, our garments go from the press to the dryer, and then straight onto the shelves in a matter of feet rather than being shipped around the country (or world) for printing. Our new space has the perfect floor plan for giving our screen printers even more space to do their thing.

We’re also grateful to be able to spread out into several closed-door offices. Our open-concept office space was great for walk-by chit chat, but these days of masking and distancing call for more separation. Plus, we’re creating a “flex space” in one of the new offices, for buds who mostly work remotely and don’t need a dedicated desk.

Moving isn’t always fun, but it does offer the chance to start fresh and we’re excited!

Thanks for following our journey throughout the years, and thank you for supporting us every step of the way. Soul Flower the company and our offices exist because of you and our shared love for all things funky and eco. Thanks for helping us help you let your soul flower!

We’re still in the thick of it, but since we’re nearing the end of the calendar year it’s a good time for reflection. Here are a few prompts to get you thinking about the positives of 2020. A few of us here at Soul Flower included our responses.

What good came from this year? What glimmers of hope did you see? How did the people around you make a positive difference in your life?

I have found myself seeing a lot of growth and change from inside myself. I got back into art and started spending more time actively working on hobbies that gave me personal joy. ~Hannah

Long walks with my dogs: Ziggy and Rolo have been getting a lot of time outside and loving it! ~Peggy

My sister is a yoga instructor, and I’ve been able to join her classes virtually over Zoom which is a lot of fun! She’s my new favorite yoga teacher ~Leiah

To-go food & NOW ALCOHOL! from my favorite restaurants We have been supporting local restaurants as much as we can by eating out 1-2 x a week. ~Peggy

My oldest son got married in August, and they are now expecting my first grandchild. 2020 can’t stop my family from growing! ~Gigi

Working from home alongside my husband has actually been a joy for me. It may not be for everyone but I love hanging out with him throughout the workday! ~Leiah

What items or routines kept you balanced and grounded in 2020?

More family time at home: puzzle power & top 100 movies ~Peggy

Took my first road trip with my youngest son and managed to keep him off the internet for a whole week! This in itself is a miracle! ~Gigi

I have read more books this year, taken long baths with many bath bombs, rekindled my love of puzzles and found real zen in home organization. ~Hannah

Riding bike to have coffee: this fall I participated in a Coffeeneuring challenge where the entire point is to ride your bike anywhere just to have coffee. It was the perfect way to get me out of the house during beautiful autumn weather. ~Leiah

Boxed wine & Epsom salt baths! A full glass and a good soak has helped keep the gloomies away! Meditation and practicing a Gratitude Attitude helps balance the Chaos & Uncertainty in the daily grind. ~Gigi

Really leaning into the basics of a balanced life: eating healthy home-cooked meals, working out regularly, going to sleep on time. Not super exciting but that’s what works for me! ~Leiah

Best Garden ever: spent more time outside, which I have always wanted to do but can never find the time. This year, my garden got a lot of love. ~Peggy

If you could summarize a positive reflection on this year, what would that statement be?

Even though many many difficult challenges were thrown my way, I have a new sense of duty to protect those I love, and fight for the things I believe in. ~Hannah

Soul 2 Soul

Soul2Soul Printing has been Soul Flower’s in-house eco-friendly screen printing shop since 2013. With quarantine we’ve been working extra hard to get our headbands out which a lot of you have been using as masks (you can read about that here). Of course we also have t-shirts, leggings and all of our other items being printed every day too. We’ve all seen them: the bread makers. Those people in quarantine that rolled up their sleeves and got to work creating fluffy, salty and experimental bread loaves. So I thought I’d take a minute to share with you all that my kitchen has also been taken over by bread. How does this pertain to Soul Flower? Well my partner joined our Soul Flower family over quarantine as our new assistant screen printer. Now he can print you a t-shirt and make you a beautiful garlic and chive loaf. So put on your fave SF tee and some fresh tunes and let’s make some bread. Or just look at these pictures I took instead.

First things first: INGREDIENTS and Stuff

You will need:

1. 3 cups of flour (all-purpose or bread flour works best)
2. 1/4 tsp active dry yeast (or 1 tsp if you want a quick rise and don’t plan on waiting 24 hours to bake your bread)
3. 1 tsp sea salt (pink himalayan also works, as well as table salt)
4. 1 1/2 cups warm water (105 degrees F, run your hot water for a few seconds usually gets it up past 100 degrees)
5. Fillings! In this recipe we used Garlic, Chives and Onion Powder
6. A dutch oven + oven mitts
7. A mixing bowl or two (depending on if you want to wash the bowl or not)
8. Something to stir with
9. Something to pick the bread up with (we use a pancake spatula but you can use a bread scraper)
10. An oven and some time
11. Oh and parchment paper
12. And a good kitchen towel

As you will notice I am not the bread maker so I will explain in photographs and then I’ll give you a link to a recipe at the bottom if you need more direction!

This mandala design was inspired by all things nature: the moon, stars, flowers, trees, roots, and even the flowing wind. Drawn from the center out, this mandala got so big that we couldn’t even fit on the leggings! We had to trim it down to the petals, but it still looks awesome.

Since Covid-19 came to town there are two places I go to escape: one is my car and the other is my Aunt Laura’s garden. While my car may be filled with gas and music, it lacks the beauty and care that a 30 year old garden has. So today I’ll take you though a visual of what I see when I step inside her pride and joy.

I’ve been working on my garden sanctuary for over 30 years. What was once mostly lawn and pine trees has turned into many different garden habitats designed to attract bees, butterflies, birds, and other wildlife. It’s a place of peace, beauty, and perpetual change. Every day in the garden is a precious gift with new flowers opening up their hearts.” – Laura

I’m not sure when Laura bought her house in Minnesota, but I do know it was before I was born as there are pictures of me in her garden as a baby. Social distancing & lockdown has been hard for me since I’m a midwest girl with a close family, so as soon as the lockdown orders were lifted I put on my Mauve Mandala mask (check out our great blog post for how to turn our headbands into masks) and drove to my Aunt’s house to have a glass of wine 6ft apart on her back deck.

My Aunt is very proud of her garden, as she should be, and it hadn’t been warm enough to start weeding and planting and trimming so the first tour of the season was looking at buds and greenery from the deck while she listed off the many things on her to-do list before the new planting could even begin.

One of the things I learned was that while you’d assume most of her plants are perennials, she actually has quite a lot of annuals that she replants every year because she enjoys them so much. I laughed and said that was a lot of work as she added plant by plant to that list as we sat dipping our homemade bread into olive oil.

On our next visit I counted new plants added and many plants in bloom. She had plants in her ‘seeding area’ which is where they sit until they are big enough or strong enough to survive in the garden on their own. New vegetable plants had gone in, and my favorite (a pot of lavender) was sitting in front of the garage waiting to find a home.

Our next visit took us to the second wave of summer blooms, a lot of the earlier flowers had come and gone and now the roses, marigolds, lilies and raspberries could be seen taking over. Her rose bushes came with an amazing story: two giant 10ft wide bushes had started out as just 2 tiny little seedlings, no bigger than the size of a strawberry. I guess they love living in the garden, I would too.

We walked though the fern path that weaves around the back and side of her home and she talked about needing to trim them back before they took over the path….again. Ferns are one of my favorite plants. They grow like weeds so if you have an area you need covered they will cover it in just a few seasons. They also are very strong and don’t usually have any issues growing around other plants so they won’t suffocate your flowers, they just might tower over them!

I asked the simple question of how many hours a season do you put into your garden and Laura looked up at me and said there was no way to calculate that. She’s in her garden any day that is good weather, and that she is home, some days from sunrise to sunset, and other days just when it’s cool enough or warm enough to work.

I realize as I am sitting here writing this I did not take any pictures of the whole garden. I had brought our drone with the intention of doing an arial shot for you all to see how beautiful the curves of the landscape are but there was a heat wave warning and it was 100 degrees so we didn’t want the drone to get too hot and crash. Laura was a good sport to go out and take a few shots with me, I’m sure there would have been more photos of flowers if the bugs hadn’t come out in full swing so we escaped back up to the deck where a nice solid breeze kept the bugs at bay.

I am a collector in that I like to try new plants and see what does well in my garden. But it’s always the reliable stables that I depend on, like the the iris, daylilies, peony, monarda, shrub roses, coneflowers, and black-eyed susans. Every season has their show-stoppers. To me. cultivating a garden is a true act of love.” – Laura

Instead of stressing over lighter-fluid-splashed red meat on the grill, try a vegan charcuterie platter! And don’t forget reusable straws, napkins and silverware.

A drop instead of an ocean

Instead of worrying about water being wasted for a backyard sprinkler water park, try a cool outdoor foot bath!

This uses a lot less water and is still refreshing under the hot sun.

Add some natural ingredients like lavender essential oil for a therapeutic soak, or keep it simple with just cool water. Extra credit if you can stand a few ice cubes thrown in!

The star-spangled sky

Instead of scaring dogs and annoying your neighbors by setting off fireworks, embrace the natural lights of the skies with a full moon ritual!

Summer’s first full moon will hit its peak around midnight of the 4th. It’s the perfect time to spend the night outdoors reveling in the magic of the natural world.

During daylight, gather wildflowers and interesting plants and DIY a flower crown to wear while dancing under the moonlight. When the sun sets, that’s when the magic happens!

Crafts over masks

Instead of joining the masses at non-socially-distanced events, try some chill creative activities that you can do at home!

Gather some sticks, wildflowers, leaves, and grasses and craft a nature weaving.

If you’ve got the space (and enough natural materials), create a yard mandala using flowers and leaves or sticks and rocks. You can even make it into a game!

If it rains…

Happiness is homemade

Instead of bumming that your outdoor plans are ruined, embrace the indoors with some keep-busy DIY projects!

Gather some rocks and paint mandala garden stones, or build a boho tent and have a photoshoot.

Upcycle old white tees or fabric with earth-toned natural plant-based tie-dye.

If all you’ve got is scraps of fabric or bits & pieces of ribbons and sewing notions, sew a hippie banner or prayer flags.

These are not medical-grade facemasks, but with a little modification, they are close!”

Boho Headbands – 2020 COVID Edition

There are a few creative ways to wear these boho headbands as masks… Of course, you can just use it as-is and slide it down over your face. But, if you put in a little extra work, we found a couple more ways to be able to add a filter and upgrade your mask game.

Face Cover #1: Single Layer, over your mouth and nose

This one is simple, just pull it over your mouth and nose and be on your way! It is simple and easy, but some of us want a little extra…

How can I add a filter? How can this mask better protect me and others? What if I want even more layers? Well, we have a couple more ideas!

Face Cover #2: Double Layer no-sew, filter ready, with a tie

List of Supplies you will need for Face Cover #2:

1. A Soul Flower Headband of any color or style
2. A comfortable string (here we used a shoelace, keep it soft, avoid twine)
3. A CDC approved filter (here we use a coffee filter, you can also use blue shop towels, air filter, vacuum bag, paper towel, etc.)

Next she pulls the string up around her head

And ties it on top

Pulling up the back side first

And then sliding the filter in between the two sides

Again with the hair getting in the way!! Adjust and voila you’ve got a mask!

Face Cover #3: Filter Double Layer sew, filter ready, with hair bands

List of Supplies you will need for Face Cover #3:

1. A Soul Flower Headband of any color or style
2. Two hair ties or two comfortable strings (or elastic band if you have that on hand)
3. A CDC approved filter
4. Needle and thread or a sewing machine

We had our Bud Rachel cut the back of the headband in 1/2, slide both hair ties on and then sew the back up with a center stitch! (We didn’t get a photo of that process but trust us, it is simple!!)

Over one ear and then the next (if you have bigger ears like me you might want the string or longer elastic method over a hair tie)

Once more with a filter

Boom MASK done!

A little backstory

This illustration is our Soul Flower “Peace Fingers” design, hand drawn by our designer Leiah in 2010 and released in the Fall 2010 Soul Flower catalog. Since then, we’ve printed it several times across several different t-shirt colors, baby clothes, and sweatshirts.

Currently, Peace Fingers is available in the shop on a “Hippie Birthday” greeting card, a notebook, and a sticker. It’s a classic!

DIY Leaf Mobile: Supplies

DIY Leaf Mobile: Instructions

1. Gather Leaves

So here’s the fun part…. head outside, take a nature walk and pick leaves from the trees that catch your eye the most. Try to find leaves that are different sizes and shapes for variety. Be sure that they’re also bendable and have a bit of life left in them – this way they won’t become too brittle and break when you move on to step two!

2. Press Leaves

Find a couple sheets of paper (paper from plastic grocery bags and newspaper work great) and lay out your leaves so that they aren’t overlapping and completely flat. Cover both sides of the leaves with this paper and then set a heavy object (like a book) on top. Check every day or so so make sure the leaves are drying out and not turning brown. If they do start to turn brown, switch the paper to a couple fresh sheets so that it can soak up the moisture quicker. After approximately 4-5 days your leaves will be dried out and ready to go! Once pressed, leaves and flowers hold their color much longer and don’t decompose like regular leaves.

3. Organize

Decide how you want your leaves to hang from your branch by placing them underneath, then cutting and gluing the fishing line to the leaves.

4. Hang + Trim

Attach the fishing line to the back of the branch using a drop of hot glue, then trim excess string.

5. Ta-Da!

You’re finished! Hang up your DIY leaf mobile using some string, (faux) leather cord, or fabric scraps and be reminded of fall each time you look at it!

The Components

Start with a blank slate. To create this display, you will need a base of a few tables, boxes, baskets, and a mannequin or two. We chose to work with different wood finishes and some green plants to help pull in nature. Here are a few components and supporting items we started our display with:

1 – Stack it Up to Create Levels of Interest

Float your display on the floor or up against the wall. Arrange benches, stools, small tables and crates around your main table. Stack bench, crates and fixtures on your table to create height and use fabric or tapestries to cover the structures and create a neutral canvas for placing products.

2- Benches and Crates Make the Perfect Shelves

Place product where it looks best. Benches are perfect for folded items and crates help to contain groups of product.  We have heard that customers prefer to buy clothes on a table rather than on racks. The fun part here is finding something that suits your store: A music shop could stack tees on a refurbished record players. A nature shop could use an old wheelbarrow to hold stacks of tees. And a yoga studio could use a stack of blocks with tees on top!

3- Keep Small Items in Baskets, Bowl or Treys

We have so many wicker baskets around here – and always find a use for them for merchandising. People love to look thru whatever you have by the register so reuse all those old baskets, bowls, and boxes: stack lip balm and notebooks or mix and match cards and stickers. Your customers will enjoy looking at all the colorful collections!

4- Hang Headbands like Prayer Flags

Showcase the unique heart-felt art on our Soul Flower Boho Headbands by stringing them on twine and displaying them like prayer flags. The colorful, unique artwork with stand out against a wall or hanging from the ceiling!

5- Make a Boho Totem

Create a table display with a recycled oatmeal container. The tube gives customers an idea of how the headbands are worn and the extra headbands can be placed inside the container. Be sure to place this stack near a mirror so your customers can see how great they look on!

6- Use Space Near the Register

Encourage last minute add-ons when you display items in baskets or simply on the counter near the check-out.

Soul Flower’s 20 Year Anniversary: October 2019

October 1999: Soul Flower was founded as a small hippie shop with cool threads for kind heads. We wanted to promote a peaceful, positive and eco-friendly lifestyle by offering eco threads and a fun shopping experience. Since then, the shop has expanded from a small boutique to an online store, offering you even more eco goodness and Minnesota made clothing to choose from.

We’ve come a long way since those beginning days, but our dedication to offering thoughtful, environmentally friendly clothing styles hasn’t changed. Our company took root in a small hippie boutique and at festivals. We created a place where college students and locals could hang out and find unique bohemian and eco-friendly threads. And we always set up shop at local music festivals to help spread the vibe and share our cool threads with more kind heads.

2019: In addition to making eco-friendly clothes, we’ve adopted many green practices into our office culture and our lives. From using eco-friendly shipping materials, to recycling everything we can, to utilizing greener printing techniques/supplies (organic cotton please!), we boldly live the Soul Flower lifestyle. We love good music, living green lives, and keeping great company. This is one group who never turns down a happy hour with coworkers or group yoga sesh. We love the positive vibes! Thanks for the support, buds!!

Q: How did you first get involved (interested) in Soul Flower?
GOLDIE: I was in college looking for a part-time job and my friend at the time told me about soul-flower. I had been getting their magazine since I was in high school and was excited about the potential of working with other like-minding individuals who liked good music. I ended up working for them in their old warehouse in St.Paul for a little over a year. The only person who still works there now, that worked there then, is Chad AKA: Chaz (and of course the owners: Peggy and Mike).

Q: What do you do for work?
GOLDIE: I am a hospice RN, which means I work with folks who are dealing with end-stage/terminal illnesses. I work along-side a team of professionals; doctor, social worker, spiritual counselor, massage/music therapists, home health aides, and volunteers to assist folks to have a comfortable and dignified death. The folks who die on hospice care are the lucky ones who choose to embrace the dying process and die in the comfort of their own home, as opposed to dying in the hospital hooked up to tubes. It is such humbling and rewarding work. It has really helped me to feel so grateful for my life and the life of those I love.

Q: How long have you been practicing Acro Yoga or what got you into Acro Yoga?
GOLDIE: I have been practicing AcroYoga for over 8 years now. I took my AcroYoga teacher training in 2014, and now teach workshops all over the Midwest and Hawaii (my second home). This practice contains numerous physical benefits as well as assisting you in developing interpersonal skills of communication, trust, and boundary setting. I’d like to think that I help people “out of their body” through my hospice work, whereas I help people “into their body” through AcroYoga

Q: You do a lot of traveling, right? Do you have a favorite place to visit?
GOLDIE: Most of my travel has been around the US and Canada. A few years ago, I did spend 3 months traveling all around SE Asia. My partner and I hit up Bali, Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. If I had to choose a favorite place amongst those countries in SE Asia, I would probably say northern Vietnam. Before going there, I had such a different idea of what Vietnam was like (probably due to history class in public schools), but it was truly one of the MOST beautiful places I’ve been to. In Hanoi Vietnam they make these specialty coffee drinks called “Egg Coffee” that is the best thing I’ve ever put in my mouth (it tastes like liquid tiramisu).

Q: I noticed you shared some original poetry the other day. Is that a new hobby, is there one you’d like to share with us and our reads?
GOLDIE: HAHA! It’s a fairly new thing. I’d like to think about this type of inspiration as always wanting to “come through us” we just have to get out of the way and let it in. Every poem I have written has been completely effortless in writing and it feels the best when it is that way. I suppose I’ll share the most recent one. Enjoy!

The Spinning Display.

Your Soul Flower stickers arrive with a tab and hole and are hangable on any traditional peg-style displays. Whether you already have a display space or are looking to purchase a new retail display, these are perfect for hanging around your shop!

Our best-selling stickers can be purchased as a starter kit here and we will send this cool sticker display along with them! It is made right here in the USA of birch plywood, assembles easily, and spins so customers can easily see all the stickers (or other items) you display on it. If you prefer to work out your own way of displaying stickers in your shop, we have lots of other options below.

The StickeOurr Pile.

The simplest idea, just label each sticker on the back with a code and price and put them in a bowl where customers can dig through and find a favorite!

The Clothes Line.

Drape some twine in a small area of your shop and individually hang your sticker on it using clothes pins. This works well inside an old suit case or even mounted in an empty photo frame. Then your customers can simply grab the sticker they want – or you can code each sticker with a code, have your customers write down the code and store them behind your counter. A file cabinet works great for this!

The Sticker Book.

Circa 1990, keep an old school sticker book at your register! Customers can flip through to see your sticker options. Inside the album, just code each sticker and let your customers choose by code. You can simply store your stickers in a file cabinet (one folder for each code) behind your counter and quickly pull them for your customers.

The Tab and Hang.

Just use the hanging tabs and individually hang your stickers on grid wall or peg board. A great option is our spinning countertop display.

Here are a few of the eco friendly practices at our catalog printing facility, St Croix Press:

We print on 100% recycled paper by ENVIRO PRINT. This paper is FSC certified and 100% post consumer recycled.

We use soy based inks. Our printing inks qualify for the Soy Seal because they are made with a high enough amount of soybean oil to meet the labeling threshold set by the American Soybean Association.

We recycle all printing and office papers. Last year we recycled 1,600,000 pounds of scrap paper. This included press make-ready, bindery trimmings, and old magazines. This paper goes directly back to the paper mills to be de-inked and mixed into the slurry while making new paper.

We recycle EVERYTHING used in the printing process. If it can be recycled, we do it. Aluminum printing plates, cardboard, office paper, press wash,  press lubricants, used metal parts, fiber paper roll cores, the usual plastic bottles, cans, newspapers, and more.

We reuse what we can. Wooden pallets are rebuilt and reused, cutter blades are sharpened and reused, plastic postal pallets and containers are reused continuously.

We purge mailing lists of undeliverable copies. We work with all of our publishers to purge mailing lists of bad and duplicate addresses. This minimizes the amount of copies produced and mailed to only the required amount and saves paper, postal resources and postage dollars.

We are FSC Chain of Custody certified. We have been FSC COC certified for over 10 years which allows our customers to use the FSC logo in their printed pieces. This ensures the paper used is coming from responsibly managed sources.

We reduce our energy consumption. We regularly work with our energy provider, Xcel Energy, on programs to reduce our energy consumption. One recent project included a heat capture system to redirect heat from our air compressors back into the building during the winter heating season.

We share our green space. We have about 5 acres of open space next to our plant. We currently allow the local Youth Soccer Association to use this space for their summer soccer fields. It’s a good feeling to look out and see a field full of happy kids running and playing!

3 Steps to an Ethical Wardrobe

1. Love and care for what you already own

Work with what you’ve got! Repair and take care of the garments you already own. The laundry and garment care you do at home accounts for 40-80% of the garment’s total emissions, so you can still make a difference even if your garments aren’t ethically made!

2. Buy secondhand

Try buying used clothing from thrift shops or vintage stores. Or swap with friends! Extending the active lifetime of a garment by just 9 months reduces carbon, waste and water footprints by around 20-30% each. Secondhand pieces can be a big part of your ethical wardrobe!

3. Buy ethical

When you do buy new, buy ethically-made. Look for as many of the following qualities as possible when putting together your ethical wardrobe.

When buying, ask: WHO, WHAT, WHERE, and WHY

Who made my clothes?

A real, live person working in the garment industry likely sewed your garment, and most likely dozens of people came in contact with that item before it ended up in your hands. Garment workers are some of the lowest paid workers in the world, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Ask brands “who made my clothes?” and look for certifications like Fair Trade and transparency about supply chains.

What is it made from, and how?

Check the fabric content of the item you’re about to buy. Is it eco-friendly in any way? If it’s cotton, is it organic? If it’s polyester, is it recycled? Consider the amount of processing that garment required to get to you, and what will happen to it at the end of its life.

Where was it made?

Consider the number of miles that garment has traveled. Could you buy a little more local? If it was made overseas, does the brand know what the manufacturing facilities are like, or are they exploiting cheap labor in less developed countries to make a profit?

Why was it made?

Tips to Green up Your Laundry

1. Wear each item longer

Wear clothes more times between washings. Looser fitting garments won’t absorb as much sweat, and natural fibers like organic cotton and hemp breathe well. Hemp clothing is also naturally anti-microbial. A cotton garment made with a bit of spandex blended in will retain its shape better, so you can wear it more times before washing.

Tip: Air out garments between washes, and fold or hang them up so you’re not throwing a t-shirt in the wash just because it looks wrinkly.

2. Wash only full loads

The average American family washes about 300 loads of laundry per year, using up to 40 gallons of water per load!

When you do laundry, only wash full loads to take advantage of all those gallons of water. Spot treat stains before tossing in the washer, instead of washing multiple times.

Tip: Try natural spot removers on stains, like vinegar, lemon juice, baking soda, and salt.

3. Wash in cold water

Washing in cold water cleans just as well as hot, and saves greenhouse gas emissions. Heating water accounts for about 90% of the energy needed to run a washing machine.

Cold water can also make your clothes last longer: lower temperatures protect the dyes and help keep your clothes from shrinking.

Tip: Hot water can actually set in stains, so cold water is best for removing them!

4. Air dry

Machine drying is the single largest cause of greenhouse gas emissions in the life cycle of a garment. The dryer uses 5 times more energy than washing, so line dry your clothes! Skipping the dryer and ironing of your t-shirt can save 1/3 of your tee’s carbon footprint.

Tip: Hang your knit t-shirts upside-down on the line to avoid crease marks on the shoulders!

5. Wear the heck out of your clothes!

Americans buy an average of 64 items of clothing per year: that’s 1 item per week and then some!

Of all the clothing sold each year, 85% ends up in landfills, thanks to the average American tossing in 70+ pounds. Extending the active lifetime of a garment by just 9 additional months reduces carbon, waste, and water footprints by around 30% each.

Tip: Before you buy something new, ask yourself, “Will I wear this a minimum of 30 times? Will it last?”

Laura (co-owner of Hymie’s) recently welcomed Soul Flower into Hymie’s Record Store, located off Lake Street in the Longfellow neighborhood of South Minneapolis. Hymie’s was once described by Rolling Stone as “a classic, overstuffed mom-and-pop used-vinyl haven”  and we were so excited to to have it as a backdrop for our Heart & Soul Collection! We took the opportunity to ask Laura about herself, Hymie’s, and of course music.

Q: Tell us a little bit about your business, Hymie’s Vintage Record Store.

A: Our store is in the Longfellow neighborhood of south Minneapolis, and was started in 1988.  We have a huge selection of new and used vinyl, and we think of ourself as the friendly neighborhood record store.

Q: What got you into music so deeply that you made it such a big part of your life?

A: My husband and I have been music fans and record collectors our whole life.  Growing up in the 80s I used to love to listen to the radio and make mix tapes, and owning a record store is an incredible extension of our love for all types of music.

Q: Do you know how many records you have in Hymie’s? (probably a billion so estimate-wink wink)

A: The store has roughly 75,000 LPs and 45s (I recently counted them all!)

Q: Is vinyl dead? Why or why not?

A: Of course not!  So long as there is recorded music, there will be vinyl.  Some people collect records because they like to hear the music as it was originally put out into the world.  Some people collect records because they like the big artwork of the cover and the liner notes, and the feel of the vinyl when they put it on the turntable.  Some people like hearing new and remastered reissues.  There are as many reasons to collect records as there are people, but even as albums evolve from cassettes, to CDs, to downloads, there will always be room for new and used vinyl.

Q: If you need a musical mood boost, what record do you put on?

A: Recently I’ve really been loving new records from Lemuria and Superchunk, but listening to old favorites like Marvin Gaye and Hall & Oates is always a lot of fun too!

Q: What do you love about the neighborhood Hymie’s is located in?

A: I love the other small businesses in our neighborhood, the restaurants and shops and parks!  We’ve lived in the Longfellow neighborhood for 15 years, and I couldn’t be happier that my work commute is a 10 block walk.

Q: Does Hymie’s plan to do anything for record store day April 21st?

A: Yes, we will host our annual Record Store Day Block Party.  My husband and I took over the store on Record Store Day 2009, and then one year later we had a huge party on RSD and closed the store to move to our new location so we think of the annual event as a birthday party for the store.  We love being able to feature a bunch of local Minneapolis musicians, and we save up records all year to put out for free on that day.

Q: What’s your favorite local venue to see live music?

A: Just like most people, I love being at First Avenue, and have seen some incredible shows there.  I’m still sad about the departure of the Triple Rock, but the Turf Club and the Hexagon as well as the Hook and Ladder are all places I love to go.

Q: What else do you enjoy doing besides running a record store?

A: Knitting!  I love creating sweaters, hats, mittens, and knitted fruits and veggies.  I even sell a handful of things at my store.

Q: When I asked if Hymie’s would host a Soul Flower photo shoot you told me you were a long time customer. I’d love to hear what Soul Flower threads you own and claim as your favorites

A: My Soul Flower t-shirts are definitely among my favorites because they stand up to lots of wear and seems like they never fade.  I also love the earrings and necklaces I’ve accumulated over the years.

Q:If you had to pick just one album that you’d recommend we listen to right now, what would it be and why?

A: I’ve been playing Lemuria’s “Recreational Hate” almost daily for a few weeks, and I can’t wait to hear the new record from Hop Along called “Bark Your Head Off, Dog” next month!

This season, we created two pattern prints: Purple Circles and Black Diamond. One’s a little bit hippie, one’s a little more rock & roll! Inspired by vintage patterns, tapestries, and sacred geometry, both prints are handmade and unique to Soul Flower. Whether you’re ready to dance or in the mood to chill, put on some tunes and get lost in the music. Let your heart & soul flower!

Both patterns are handmade: Black Diamond began as a series of geometric-filled diamonds, and Purple Circles came from hand carved linoleum stamps!

After getting the shapes on paper, I scanned them into the computer and went to work on creating a repeat pattern. Then we sent our prints to our Fair Trade manufacturer, where they print our patterns onto the fabric using water based inks. In this case, it’s 95% organic cotton and 5% spandex, for that perfect softness with a bit of stretch.

The hardest part about making patterns is choosing colors: the options are endless! For Purple Circles, we decided to go with a nice rosy plum with pops of natural and blue. This print goes especially well with our natural, blue, and gray tops.

For Black Diamond, we went with a classic black and natural. This print pairs especially well with our black, gray, natural, and olive tops. But overall it’s really a neutral, so it’ll go with anything!

It’s so rewarding to see finished garments all decked out in custom, hand made patterns. We hope you love this collection!

Why Organic Cotton is Better Than Non-Organic:

1. Sustainability, always

Organic certification requires safe working conditions, no child labor, and fair wages for workers. Production must protect water supplies and treat all waste water. Chlorine bleaches and chemicals commonly used in textile processing that can cause cancer, birth defects, and other serious illnesses are not allowed.

2. Organic saves lives

The $2 billion worth of chemicals sprayed on conventional cotton crops worldwide every year (half of which are designated toxic by the World Health Organization) includes 900+ registered synthetic pest control products. Farmers’ exposure to these chemicals causes occupational illnesses and each year, up to 77 million cotton workers suffer acute pesticide poisoning, resulting in up to 20,000 deaths. Due to chemical exposure, the average life expectancy of a non-organic cotton farmer in India is mid-30’s.

3. It uses less water

A single, average non-organic cotton t-shirt requires on average 700 gallons of water to produce. That’s about 22 bath tubs’ worth— for one t-shirt! Organic uses 91% less water to produce, thanks to healthier soil and less water pollution from run-off.

Our new Soul Shine design was inspired by one of our oldest (now retired) designs. This tank is made from 50% organic cotton, 50% recycled plastic water bottles, and dyed with low-impact dyes. Made in the USA and hand screen printed in Minnesota with low-waste phthalate-free inks. Love the pop of turquoise on black!

I drew the design on brown kraft paper. By working on a medium-toned background, I was able to put down both dark (black) and light (white) lines. This makes it easier to separate later when I get it on the computer.

Lately I’ve been seriously loving retro, psychedelic, liquid-looking letters. They fit in any space and their hand-drawn-ness just oozes.

In the center heart of this new Soul Shine design, I put one of the mandalas from the original. We chose turquoise and white inks as a nod to the old styles, although the original-original Soulshine was actually purple!

1st CHAKRA: ROOT

The red root chakra is located at the base of your spine and is all about your roots, your history, survival, and the material world. When this chakra is activated, you feel connected to the earth, safe, grounded, and in control. All other chakras depend on this one so be sure to start with your root chakra to activate your chakras: all good things come from a solid foundation.

Activate the Root Chakra:

1. Get in tune with your physical body through exercise, yoga, dancing, or walking.
2. Connect with nature by taking a barefoot walk through the grass, taking a nap in the shade, or spend time relaxing at the foot of a tree.
3. Use aromatherapy to boost your root chakra [1]. The part of our brains responsible for processing smells is located right next to the primary place for memories. Recreate some of your favorite smells from childhood (chocolate chip cookies, anyone?!) to activate those warm, fuzzy feelings of love and belonging.
4. Smell earthy cedarwood or sandalwood.

2nd CHAKRA: SACRAL

The orange sacral chakra is located below the navel in the hips and is the center of your emotions, desires, and pleasure. When this chakra is activated, you feel alive, sensual, desired, and are enjoying everything. You are in touch with your emotions and are trusting toward others [2].

Activate the Sacral Chakra:

1. Indulge in some sensory pleasure by savoring your favorite dark chocolate or fruit tea. Or bite into a sweet, ripe mango or some melt-in-your-mouth roasted vegetables. Savor each morsel; food is one of life’s simplest pleasures!
2. Tap into the elemental energy of water by going swimming, taking a bath, or relaxing next to a body of water, fountain, or waterfall.
3. Get intimate with a partner, give yourself a massage, or go on a date someplace exciting. Or get in touch with your body through a balancing yoga flow.
4. Wear feminine jasmine or inhale sweet sage.

3rd CHAKRA: SOLAR PLEXUS

The yellow solar plexus chakra is located in your belly and is your source of power. When this chakra is activated, you respect yourself and others, and feel outgoing, happy, relaxed, yet energized. Power in this chakra helps you transcend your ego and find motivation and zest for living your best life.

Activate the Solar Plexus Chakra:

1. Tap into the elemental power of the sun and fire: soak up some sun, stoke a campfire, or simply light the flame of a single candle.
2. Ignite some heat in your belly by enjoying spicy foods or ginger tea.
3. Anything you can do to feel powerful: practice core strength with pilates or yoga, wear something that makes you glow, or jam out to some rock music.
4. Lift your mood with lemon.

4th CHAKRA: HEART

The green heart chakra is located at your heart center and is the balanced, compassionate center of your being. When this chakra is activated, you feel friendly, outgoing, and connect easily with yourself and others. You practice unconditional love, empathy, and nurture your relationships.

Activate the Heart Chakra:

1. Give hugs! Show your love for others and express your gratitude for your closest friends and family members. Lock eyes and smile at the barista.
2. Practice self-love daily. Whatever that means for you, whether it be dancing, listening to music, candlelit baths, yoga, or playing with your furbabies.
3. Soak up some green: walk amongst trees, start a garden, or add a few house plants to your home.
4. Wear balancing green jasper or calming ylang ylang.

5th CHAKRA: THROAT

The blue throat chakra is all about self-expression and finding your voice. When this chakra is balanced, you feel empowered to speak your truth and communicate with others. You may be inspired to make noise: with your breath, in song, or by expressing yourself through writing.

Activate the Throat Chakra:

1. Get some energy flowing through your throat, literally! Sing along to your favorite songs, hum with the radio, or practice the freeing yogic lion’s breath.
2. Spend time journaling your whirlwind thoughts. Understand yourself more so you can communicate more effectively with others.
3. Connect to others through the power of communication by teaching your niece a recipe, having a heart-to-heart conversation with a friend, or just focus on really listening to others when they try to connect with you.
4. Boost your system with tea tree oil.

6th CHAKRA: THIRD EYE

The indigo third eye chakra is located at the center of your forehead (at the brow) and is all about inner vision, insight, imagination, and clarity of thoughts. When this chakra is activated, you feel focused and steady. You may feel as though you’re seeing everything from a higher perspective: beyond ego and petty worries or fears. You may experience glimpses of past lives, have lucid dreams, or feel in touch with a “sixth sense” of perception beyond explanation [2].

Activate the Third Eye Chakra:

1. Practice entering states of flow: when you’re so engaged in an activity that you lose track of time and space. These activities serve as concentration exercises, moving your attention from your brain’s chatter to the activity at hand. Whether it’s drawing a mandala, practicing yoga, or coding software, flow states transcend us.
2. Make a vision board for your future, or practice free-writing (writing by hand for a set amount of time without stopping to think). See what treasures you can unearth by exploring your higher self.
3. Free your mind: read books, ask questions, read the lyrics, dig deep researching topics that interest you, meditate as often as you can, explore…
4. Release physical tension with amethyst and soothe overactive brow energy with lavender.

7th CHAKRA: CROWN

The violet crown chakra is located at the top of your head and is all about consciousness. It’s important to work on the other six chakras first before this one, as the energy here is supplied by the others. When the crown chakra is activated, you’ve found your soul’s purpose. You feel enlightened, knowing we are all connected and everything is love. There is no limit to your bliss and you are in complete control of your mind.

Activate the Crown Chakra:

1. Meditate. Strive for control over your mind. Practice meditating anywhere, any time. If you struggle sitting still, try a walking meditation and sync your breath to your steps.
2. Let your mind ride the waves of pure vibrational energy by listening to classical music or om chanting (or voice the ommmm yourself).
3. Continue your journey. The symbol for the crown chakra is the thousand-petal lotus, a reminder of the vast beauty that can unfold when you keep going on the journey to becoming your best self. Do something every day that helps you step into the person you want to become; the enlightened soul you know is within.
4. Strengthen your connection to the divine with sacred frankincense, and amplify your positive energy with clear quartz [1].

Every goal you have can be broken down into smaller pieces. The number one reason people fail at their new year’s resolutions is because they set too many large goals without looking at all the smaller goals they have to accomplish to reach those goals. Here is one method you can try to get a handle on one goal at a time!

Step One:

Take a look at all the goals you have for 2018

Step Two:

Pick one of those goals

Step Three:

Break up the goal into smaller, more manageable pieces

Step Four:

Look over those smaller pieces and pick the doable ones

* For example with my busy days I can fit 20 minutes of exercise into my schedule more easily than I can gym every day or even 3 days a week, and for eating better I can easily cut out more junk food than just switching my diet or only eating greens. This way I can start out slowly making lifestyle changes instead of jumping straight into a whole new routine and diet and getting discouraged and falling back into bad habits. While I was writing I realized that I was putting myself down in both areas: eating and exercise, so my target with getting in shape is really just being kinder to myself and slowly making positive changes to my life.

Step Five:

Hide your big list until you have stayed on course or finished this one goal
