Back at Sidney Myer Music Bowl again, this time for the Best of V Festival 2007 night. We got there just in time for Gnarls Barkley, missed out on The Rapture set. I’d imagine not many made it there for The Rapture, considering it was a work day and the band was set to start at 5.50pm. Gnarls, backed by a full band and a 6-piece orchestra, lost his voice half way through the set, yet managed to deliver a vibrant performance. Groove Armada was my highlight of the night, indeed the reason I was there. Totally rocking my socks off!

Pet Shop Boys was erm… entertaining. Never a fan…

Featuring Australia’s biggest ever line-up of global electronic music talents, over 10 hours of world-class DJs across 6 stages, the day festival this year attracted 12,000 party-goers to Sidney Myer Music Bowl in beautiful sunshine weather.

Having to line up for a good 40 minutes just to get into the main stage, we decided to stay there till the end, missing out on many other great sets including Chris Lake, Xpress-2, Fedde le Grand and Nick Warren. Nevertheless, Carl Cox and Ferry Corsten never fail to rock any stage. The only problem:- 2 hours of Corsten is never enough…

Steve Jobs has recently posted an article on the Hot News section of Apple website expressing his thoughts on music, or rather his explanation of the cause and effect of Apple’s Digital Rights Management (DRM) system. Considered its “not so fair” FairPlay DRM recently declared illegal in Norway, with many more legal bills to come from all over Europe including France, Germany, Sweden and Finland; these are not just Jobs’ random thoughts.

Jobs indeed blames the “big four” labels for the DRM system’s existence, saying if they can be convinced to release their music DRM-free, Apple will embrace it wholeheartedly. He advises “those unhappy with the current situation”, i.e. European consumer agencies and/or Apple’s competitors, “should redirect their energies towards persuading the music companies to sell their music DRM-free”.

On the other side, Jon Johansen, the first and only man to date who managed to unblock FairPlay, accused Apple of lying by quoting an article on NYTimes about Apple rejecting requests from music label to remove FairPlay copy protection from their tracks on Apple Music Store. He also pointed out that Apple was using misleading statistics by showing the 22 songs average per iPod. Jon also demonstrated Microsoft’s case as an example of opening its DRMs to other companies and still had less security breaches than FairPlay

Future Music Festival this year has an amazing line-up. I saw Ferry Corsten last at Zoukout 2006 and he rocked my socks off! Just don’t buy your tickets from InTheMix if you need it urgently. It took 2 weeks for mine to arrive.

I love the new Eskimo Joe’s Black Fingernails, Red Wine album. So when they announced their remix contest for the upcoming New York single, that was just another excuse for me to get back into something that I haven’t done for quite a while: making music. That and the fact that they made their track available in Pro Tools session format. Another excuse for me finally create something in Pro Tools.

By the end, it got quite frustrated - she crashed on me every 15 minutes, no exaggerating! Maybe 7.3 LE doesn’t like my outdated MBox. Maybe she doesn’t like FruityLoops (ermm, you did not hear me say FruityLoops, I was supposed to do everything in Pro Tools!!!). What came out was a progressive groovy house track. Kinda spacey actually. I’m quite happy with it, indeed I spent a good whole 3 days dancing to it in my lounge room.

Check it out and leave your thoughts! Also visit Eskimo Joe’s Space for the Original Mix, or watch it on the Tube.
