Big News: SourceForge Just Got a Major Upgrade with Cool Demo Tools!

Hey everyone! We’ve got some awesome news to share that’s going to make showcasing and exploring business software on SourceForge a whole lot cooler and easier. We’re now teamed up with some of the top interactive demo platforms out there:

Supademo

Storylane

Reprise

Walnut

Tourial

Navattic

Demostack

Floik

ScreenSpace

Consensus

TestBox

Yep, it’s a big deal, and here’s why.

Demos Just Got an Upgrade

Let’s face it, seeing what software actually does and how it works is way more interesting than just reading about it. That’s why we’re super excited about making your software demos way more interactive and fun. With these tools, you can create demos that let people dive in and get their hands dirty with your software, right from the get-go.

Everything’s Better Together

Integrating these platforms into SourceForge means you can now embed live, interactive demos right on your software listing page. Imagine being able to show off your software with a cool demo that people can actually play with without having to download anything or go somewhere else. It’s all about making life easier for your potential users and helping them see why your software rocks.

Here’s how it’ll look on the listing page:

Clicking on “View Demo” will open up the interactive demo right in the user’s browser window, without them leaving the page.

A Toolbox Full of Goodies

With a lineup like Supademo, Storylane, Reprise, and all the others, you’ve got a ton of options to choose from. Want to highlight specific features? Guide users through how things work? Show off different scenarios where your software shines? These platforms have got you covered, making it super simple to create demos that really show off what your software is all about.

Why This Rocks for You

This isn’t just about making SourceForge look good (though that’s a nice bonus). It’s about giving you the tools to really connect with prospective buyers and show them what your software can do. It’s about making your software stand out and getting people excited to try it out. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t love playing around with a new tool before committing to it?

What’s Next?

We’re pumped to see what you all come up with using these new demo tools. This is just the beginning, and we’re always on the lookout for ways to make SourceForge the best place to discover, share, and showcase software. So, dive in, start creating some amazing demos, and show the world what your software is made of!

Check out our interactive demo setup guide to get started.

Keep an eye on SourceForge for more updates and cool new features coming your way. Let’s make software discovery fun and interactive together!

The purpose of this blog post is to announce our scheduled maintenance window for project web hosting. We will be upgrading the database used by project websites on SourceForge.

We will be doing it in alphabetical order, starting with projects that begin with the letter “A”. Each letter group of projects will take about 3 hours. We do not expect any significant downtime for the static portion of the websites. The database will be undergoing upgrades, however, so new comments or forum posts hosted on a project website will be unavailable for approximately 3 hours.

No action on your part is required.

There will not be any impact or downtime regarding projects on SourceForge, project downloads, or code repositories.

This database upgrade will begin on October 23rd.

We will update this blog post with progress. You can also refer to the SourceForge Status Mastodon page.

Projects starting with the following letters are complete: A-Z

Earlier this year, GitHub announced that it would be sunsetting Subversion support on January 8th, 2024. Since then, SourceForge has seen high volume of projects that use Subversion migrate to SourceForge. To all the new projects, welcome!

With GitHub’s support for Subversion due to end on January 8th, 2024, we’ve been getting questions about the future of Subversion on SourceForge.

This blog post is to let everyone know that Subversion will remain an option on SourceForge. SourceForge will never end support for Subversion. So if your project uses Subversion and you want to keep using it, we encourage you to migrate your project to SourceForge.

It’s really easy to move your project from GitHub to SourceForge. Simply use our GitHub Import Tool – it just takes a minute, and it’ll migrate everything from your GitHub project to SourceForge.

We believe users should have a choice about which version control system they use. So SourceForge will continue to support Git, Subversion, and Mercurial.

The post GitHub is Ending Subversion (svn) Support: Subversion and SourceForge appeared first on SourceForge Community Blog.

OSDN.net has been having extended service outages since it was recently acquired. Some users are reporting that OSDN has been down on and off for over a week. We’ve seen a big influx of new projects at SourceForge in the same time period.

Should OSDN remain inaccessible, we’d like to extend a warm invitation to all OSDN projects to host on SourceForge. As a reminder, SourceForge supports Git, SVN, and Mercurial. SourceForge also offers large binary downloads, project website hosting, and mailing lists, just like OSDN did.

—

We are happy to announce that SourceForge has recognized a number of exceptional projects on SourceForge with awards based on the value these projects provide to the open source community. One project we’d like to highlight is ProjectLibre, which was awarded the Open Source Excellence award. ProjectLibre is the number one project management alternative to Microsoft Project, and is now used on all 7 continents.

Hear from Marc O’Brien, Co-Founder of ProjectLibre:

ProjectLibre is the #1 alternative to Microsoft Project. ProjectLibre has a sophisticated data structure that mirrors Microsoft Project so users interoperate and can simply open existing files on Linux, macOS or Windows. It is terrific to work with SourceForge and we appreciate your role in the community. Our team enjoys the interactive map displaying downloads around the world. There have been over 5,500,000 downloads and we have a vibrant ProjectLibre community. The community is thankful we offer it as open source and free! This month alone, ProjectLibre has been downloaded in 190 countries (darker green represents more downloads). Our users are on all 7 continents including projects being managed in Antarctica!

The ProjectLibre team receives messages weekly from people thankful for our open source alternative to Microsoft Project. It is meaningful to our team. Recent examples are architects in Turkey or engineering firms in India who can manage their projects without costly proprietary software. We get emails from people faced with the moral dilemma, having competitors pirating commercial software putting them at a business disadvantage. They can’t afford Microsoft but need to compete, managing projects and showing customers project plans. Microsoft Project desktop costs over $1,000 and the burden cost including Sharepoint etc. is much higher. Microsoft’s new versions Project for the Web and Project Online are widely considered a disaster and people can’t afford the desktop.

ProjectLibre is translated into 29 languages. The architects in Turkey or engineers in India can manage projects for free and in their native languages of Turkish, Hindi or even regional Tamil languages. Companies effectively manage their projects and remain ethical by not pirating. ProjectLibre has a sophisticated data model that mirrors Microsoft Project. This allows opening existing Microsoft files in ProjectLibre on Linux, macOS or Windows. If required you can even make changes in the projects and round trip the project file back to users on Microsoft.

ProjectLibre is also taught in over 1,500 Universities around the world! ProjectLibre and SourceForge are both making a difference in the world. Our team has been the founders of three software companies. The previous two were acquired and it prevented fulfilling our mission. We are excited and working seven days a week as we are dedicated to making a difference in the world. We have established a ProjectLibre YouTube Channel with many instructional videos. We also speak at many events on both the project management discipline and also open source software. The ProjectLibre team has a lot more to accomplish and appreciate having SourceForge as a partner.

Thank you SourceForge!

ProjectLibre, congratulations on being recognized with the Open Source Excellence award from SourceForge. From everyone at SourceForge, we are proud to host ProjectLibre on SourceForge.

SourceForge does not have malware or viruses. All projects, downloads, and releases served from SourceForge are scanned for malware and viruses, so you can rest assured that your downloads from SourceForge are safe and will not harm your computer or device.

However, there are a few projects on SourceForge that are used for security and penetration testing purposes, and in this case we still scan them for malware, viruses, and unwanted files. If our scanners find any suspicious or malicious files, a bright orange alert will display instead of the download button. These files are not malicious in intent, but are used by security researchers and IT professionals for security and research purposes.

With the exception of security and penetration testing open source projects, SourceForge projects and downloads do not contain malware, viruses, adware, or bundled installers. Every single upload and download on SourceForge is scanned for malware and all types of unwanted files before we serve it to end-users who are interested in downloading software.

Original OS images were downloaded from their respective official websites, I did not modify any file from original nor convert OS images, however, some images have been modified to fix Berryboot incompatibilities. Most of the OS images were converted by using this method: https://www.berryterminal.com/doku.php/berryboot/adding_custom_distributions. Some projects already have their own OS images for Berryboot, in those cases, I just compress them and serve as a mirror. You must know that I’m not part of the Berryboot project, I’m just a web developer with a Raspberry Pi 3, Odroid C2 & Rock Pi S. I cannot offer full support on these images.
On this day in 2003 the Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography And Marketing, better known as the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003 was signed into law in the United States by then President George W. Bush. It was the U.S.’s first national standard for the sending of commercial email, made in order to somehow control the growing deluge of junk e-mail at the time. However, the Act largely failed to prohibit many types of email spam and prevented the enactment of stronger anti-spam protections. This resulted in the Act being largely unenforced.

For our December “Staff Pick” Project of the Month, we selected Freeplane, an application for Mind Mapping, plus Knowledge and Project Management.

Freeplane helps to organize and communicate your ideas in the most effective way, through useful functions such as hierarchical ordering of ideas, classifying, connecting and grouping nodes, note-taking and more.

Freeplane was previously elected “Community Choice” Project of the Month in November 2016, as well as “Community Choice” Project of the Month in June 2014. We caught up with lead coder Dimitry Polivaev to find out how the project has been doing since then.

SourceForge (SF): What significant changes have occurred with your project since you were voted Project of the Month in November 2016?
Dimitry Polivaev (DP): Usability improvements: We changed the menu structure as suggested by the student usability research group of the University of Oulu. We implemented Command search dialog, a new way to access all menu commands, preferences and icons… and plenty of other usability improvements.

New documentation was/is being created by our collaborators (Many Thanks!): Freeplane Tutorial Channel on Youtube, https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCh5L_Fyyymhf6X6TnzAMbsg; and a series of documentation articles in online Full Circle Magazine https://fullcirclemagazine.org/tag/freeplane/ . We collected it in a pdf file available at https://www.freeplane.org/handbook

Other improvements include:

Dark mode and dark template.

SVG icons which allowed to use Freeplane on HD monitors.

Switch to UTF8 encoding (enables easier processing of Freeplane files by third party tools).

Emoji icons for all icon symbols defined by unicode.

Script API improvements.

SF: What can we look forward to with Freeplane?
DP: Video support at YouTube as a mainstream communication platform. It can help new users and also support current users. This Channel shows people how easy Freeplane can be used to manage knowledge.

Also quick reaction to questions and reports from the SourceForge Freeplane user community. We want to keep up the user support and quality of our project.

On this day in 1991 Apple released the very first version of QuickTime, an extensible multimedia framework for playing various formats of digital video. It was a move that changed the capabilities of personal computers at that time. Before QuickTime only specialized computers could play color video, but with QuickTime just about anyone could do so on their personal computer.

The first version of QuickTime was released as a multimedia add-on for System 6 and later. It was first publicly demonstrated by lead developer Bruce Leak at the May 1991 Worldwide Developers Conference, where Leak played Apple’s famous 1984 advertisement on QuickTime in 320×240 pixels resolution.

For our December “Community Choice” Project of the Month, the community elected Dolibarr ERP – CRM, an open source ERP and CRM web software for business.

Dolibarr is easy to use and is full-featured, offering products management, invoices management, orders management, point of sale and so much more.

Recently we caught up with the lead developer Laurent Destailleur as he shared some thoughts about the project’s history, purpose, and direction.

SourceForge (SF): Tell me about the Dolibarr ERP – CRM project please.
Laurent Destailleur (LD): Dolibarr ERP CRM is a web modular business suite. Each module (also called applications) can cover a feature. For example, there is one module for the billing, one for the expense report, one for the stock management, the accountancy, the commercial proposal, the agenda, the recruitment, the lead or project management, etc… There are a hundred modules provided with the core. And if this is not enough, there are also 600 external addons and complementary applications developed by a lot of different companies on the market place (www.dolistore.com).

SF: What made you start this?
LD: I was looking for an easy to use software to manage my freelancer activity in December 2003 (making billing and following customers), as an Open Source fan (I am also the author of AWStats Log Analyzer, started several years ago and that would become project of the month 7 months later in 2004 :-).
At this date, there was not a lot of choice. I finally found Dolibarr ERP CRM on what was a very small software in PHP started by Rodolphe Quiedeville in April 2002 for the same need. I started to enhance it. Rodolphe asked me in 2008 to take the lead of the project.

SF: Has the original vision been achieved?
LD: I think so. The goal was to offer a software that was most easy to use with a good learning curve. Finally Dolibarr has become as feature-filled as the most powerful ERP and CRM but being immediately usable after installation, and very easy to use.

SF: Who can benefit the most from your project?
LD: All companies need an ERP and a CRM. And because Dolibarr is available in all languages, every company in the world (from the freelancer to the large company) can benefit from Dolibarr ERP CRM. But because Dolibarr is free (if you can host it yourself), it is often the small and medium companies that use it. Dolibarr is also very popular among the freelancers and the foundations.

SF: What core need does Dolibarr ERP – CRM fulfill?
LD: All the need a company has, we try to cover it with one module, so integration between each module/application is done automatically with no need of setup or developing interfaces.

SF: What’s the best way to get the most out of using Dolibarr ERP – CRM?
LD: A good way to start is to enable only one or two modules you firstly need. Once you are familiar, you can enable another module so Dolibarr can follow your needs when your needs increase.

SF: What has your project team done to help build and nurture your community?
LD: A foundation was created and the foundation has installed a wiki for documentation, manages social networks, develops tutorial videos, installed tool to manage members (Dolibarr of course), maintain the web site portal https://www.dolibarr.org (built with Dolibarr CMS always), etc… The foundation has also started to work on free online courses. Some DevCamps are also organized every 6 months. The foundation also manages a list of qualified partners: https://partners.dolibarr.org and a list of SaaS providers of the solution: https://saas.dolibarr.org

SF: Have you found that more frequent releases helps build up your community of users?
LD: For 12 years now, there is a new major version every 6 months. I don’t think having more or less releases can help to build a community. What is important is that each release is better than the previous one and that each user using an old version can upgrade, with no effort, to the new version. So you always keep old users, getting also new ones. This increases your community of users. But the most important is to have a product that provides the features the users need. And Open source is a good solution for this, since a lot of contributors are users themselves.

SF: What was the first big thing that happened for your project?
LD: Moving the project from SVN to GIT was a very interesting work. After this change, international contributions to the project just exploded.

SF: What helped make that happen?
LD: One of the core developers asked it, I just validated, to follow the progress. Result was better than expected.

SF: How has SourceForge and its tools helped your project reach that success?
LD: When we decided to move to GIT, GIT was not yet available on SourceForge (it appeared a few months after), so we installed our own forge for the sources on a server of the foundation (note: we moved sources to GitHub a few years later). Some developers (like myself) still sign their contributions with the SourceForge email alias. Also, the SourceForge file download platforms is our official mirroring service to download the application.

SF: What is the next big thing for Dolibarr ERP – CRM?
LD: We currently have enough features to be competitive with the most important ERP and CRM of the market (Even if some important features are still coming soon…). But we are missing a “nice trademark”.
Having the best software is not enough. Users often make the choice of the most sexy one, even if this is not a good choice for the long term. So we must also become more and more sexy.

SF: How long do you think that will take?
LD: This is a long term action. Each version will be better.

SF: Do you have the resources you need to make that happen?
LD: Yes. The Dolibarr community is very large now. In fact, we have too many contributions. I never thought I would say this one day. But the fact is that a software so feature-filled like Dolibarr needs to introduce features with a lot of care to avoid losing the initial philosophy “Being simple for everybody: The developer, the Installer and the End user”. So more and more contributions must be discarded because they bring interesting features, but the ratio of feature/ease of understanding is not good. For this reason, we encourage developing uncommon features as external addons.

SF: If you had to do it over again, what would you do differently for Dolibarr ERP – CRM?
LD: Maybe moving to GIT earlier.

SF: Is there anything else we should know?
LD: Maybe my third project of the month will be sell-your-saas: https://sellyoursaas.org (very new and not yet on SourceForge). See you in 16 years 😉
