A Celebration Of Love Bridal Show – Coming January 15th!

With a new year comes a new season of bridal shows. Here at B-Sharp, I’m gearing up for the 2012 A Celebration Of Love bridal show at the Quidnessett Country Club in North Kingstown, RI. It’s happening on Sunday, January 15th, from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

This will be my first year exhibiting at this show, and I’m really excited about it – many of my events are taking place in Rhode Island this year, and I’ve been fortunate to network with a number of other great wedding specialists in the Ocean State. The location, at 950 North Quidnessett Road in North Kingstown, is beautiful, with scenic water views and superb service. Best of all, it’s just 20 minutes from Providence.

The show will feature six stages and a continuous fashion show, as well as more than 50 vendors showcasing everything you need to plan the perfect Rhode Island wedding. Just wanted to share a clip of the event I did last night at the amazing Liberty Hotel in Boston. This was a corporate holiday party on the hotel’s Esplanade level; I provided wireless LED uplighting (red & white), monogram projection and DJ services. It was a fantastic event!

(Just Like) Starting Over

I’d love to tell you that DJs everywhere work only on weekends and get weekdays off to do whatever they’d like. Truth be told, there’s far more to running a successful entertainment company. A typical week for me includes making dozens of phone calls, answering a boatload of emails, meeting with prospective clients, meeting with people who’ve hired me, sending out contracts, keeping in touch with my fellow event professionals, and blogging about the adventures of the amazing wedding DJ.

So then why so few blog posts this year? This guy’s partly to blame:

Benjamin Mark Lafferty at 2 months

My wife and I recently welcomed a new baby boy – Benjamin Mark Lafferty. Actually, he’s almost six months old now. Balancing a busy schedule and being a loving husband and father of two boys under the age of 3 means that it takes at least six months to get almost anything accomplished (unless it’s kid-related… but dont’ get me wrong, I absolutely love my kids). Case in point – I started reading Gary Vaynerchuk’s book “The Thank You Economy” in the hospital delivery room, and I’m still stuck in Chapter 1. Sorry Gary. Someday I’ll find the time.

Secondly, this website has been a work-in-progress for much of the past year and I didn’t feel comfortable keeping the blog fresh when the rest of the website clearly needed more attention. Fortunately, things are coming together nicely now… just in time for the END of the 2011 wedding season. Great timing!

So what’s new? Let me tell you:

I’ve entertained at some truly amazing events this year, from Mrs. Zebra’s well-documented reception at the Providence Biltmore to last night’s unbelievable wedding reception at the Pawtucket Country Club.
I’ve brought some talented people on-board, including my friend Len Palmer. He’s a terrific pianist and I’m thrilled to have him at some of my events.
I’ve added some fantastic new options for my clients, including custom music production and color-controlled wireless LED uplighting. I hope to have some video footage posted soon to explain more about these services.

Finally, this is the biggest reason for the check-in here: October 2011 marks my 25th year as a working DJ, and I’m extremely proud of this milestone. I’ll be posting more about that in the coming months, and I’ll also have some new event recaps to share, too. Stay tuned.

Unique…Fun…Memorable. Tonight at 11!

I was meeting with a prospective client and her mom the other night, and was asked what some of the current trends in weddings are. Of course, there’s a big focus on design and decor right now, with LED Uplighting and Monogram Projection becoming some of my most popular add-ons this year. But on the way home from the meeting, I started thinking back to all of the unique, fun and memorable things I’d seen at weddings. This is my 25th year as a professional DJ entertainer, and I’ve certainly been part of some wonderful celebrations.

Here’s one that stands out: Amy & Troy’s wedding reception in July 2009.

Amy & Troy had a tradition of doing fun (and slightly over-the-top) things to commemorate special occasions. So, for their wedding day, the Best Man (Troy’s brother Todd) turned the tables on them, by making their wedding the lead story on the evening news. At the end of his toast, and in front of 130 guests, he invited the newlyweds to the dance floor, where they sat in front of a large screen to catch the night’s top story, courtesy of NBC10′s Gene Valicenti:

The bride and groom’s reaction? Priceless. The audience’s reaction? Also priceless. And when it was the best man’s turn to tie the knot in 2010, Amy & Troy sought (and received) personal well-wishes from all of the living U.S. Presidents. The traditions continue!

The Sounds of Spring 2011

We’re off to a busy start to 2011 here at B-Sharp, and we just picked up our first award for the new year. It’s with great pleasure that we announce that we’ve been rated by local brides and voted The Knot Best of Weddings 2011 Pick in the Rhode Island DJ category. This is truly an honor, and a testament to the high level personalized service that we provide. The Knot, in association with their partner site WeddingChannel.com, selects the recipients for this prestigious award based on feedback from previous clients. We currently have a 5-Star rating on the WeddingChannel website.

Hawthorne Country Club’s 2011 Bridal Show – January 9th!

I’ve been super-busy in the past month, entertaining at holiday parties, class reunions, and a few incredible weddings. I’m also thinking ahead to January, and Hawthorne Country Club‘s annual Bridal Show on Sunday, January 9th. Sure, there are plenty of wedding fairs happening on the Southcoast in early 2011, but this one’s a must-attend. Here’s why: It’s truly the best-of-the-best. You’ll get to meet at least 30 terrific vendors, all personally chosen to participate by Hawthorne’s staff. You’ll also have a chance to win some incredible prizes (think big!) . Most importantly, you’ll be able to see firsthand what an amazing job the staff at Hawthorne does, for weddings and all types of events. They’ve made some incredible renovations in the past couple of years, and this is their 16th bridal show. Admission is free.

Alexis + Jon: September 10, 2010

Some of the best wedding receptions are those where the clients put their full trust in their DJ to make the party happen. That was definitely the case with Alexis and Jon, who were referred to me by Jon’s co-worker George (I was the DJ for George’s wedding reception last year at Rehoboth’s Five Bridge Inn).

The reception took place at Quidnessett Country Club in North Kingstown, RI. It’s a beautiful venue, with amazing water views, lots of room for dancing, tasteful decor, and fantastic service. They also have quite a few menu options – this was the first wedding I’ve been to where dinner was followed by cake, which was then followed by an ice cream sundae bar, which was then followed by a late-night pizza station. Needless to say, no one left hungry.

Alexis and Jon entered the room to cheers, applause, and… the Jersey Shore fist pump. Their introduction song, the wildly popular “I Like It” by Enrique Iglesias, was a perfect choice and immediately set the tone for the evening. Here’s where that trust comes in – the “must play” song list that Alexis & Jon provided contained lots of favorites like “Sweet Caroline”, “Shout” and “Footloose”, but it was entirely up to me to figure out how to fill in the rest of the five-hour party. No problem at all – guests were dancing as soon as dinner service had finished, and the dance floor was full the entire night.

LeBaron Hills Country Club’s 2010 Bridal Show: November 21st!

It’s just over a month away, so you’ll want to put it on your calendar: the LeBaron Hills Country Club 2010 Bridal Show on Sunday, November 21st. Now in its third year, this show features some of the best local wedding vendors – last year’s show had more than 50 exhibitors. This is also a great opportunity to see the grounds and function room at LeBaron Hills. Admission is free, and I’ll be providing the musical entertainment for the afternoon, with wireless sound in all three rooms. As expected, there will be quite a few prize giveaways, too.
