I love strawberries. My three year old son ~~has an obsession with~~ loves strawberries. With strawberry season upon us, it only seemed natural that we would go pick strawberries. (okay, not really. I'm all over fresh strawberries, but until this weekend, the freshest we got came from the farmers' market, which I consider pretty darn fresh. I haven't been traipsing through any sort of field since I went looking for arrowheads in cotton fields when I was 18. Note, I did that because I liked a boy who liked looking for arrowheads and if I came upon a snake, certainly he would save me, right? ... anyway, H was set on picking strawberries, so we went in search of a strawberry patch.)

We headed out to Jean's Strawberry Patch Saturday morning. Yes, right before the rain, but we were determined. It. was. fabulous. Fresh strawberries and baked goods that were inexpensive and easy. So, if you are a strawberry patch novice like I was, or if you haven't been to Jean's, here's the deal.

Lots of people bring their own baskets. I didn't. I was clueless. that's okay--they have some there that you can use. So, we grabbed our basket and headed down the path to the field (it's really right there). There were strawberries galore, and because of the impending rain, not crowded at all. We had a great time picking the berries and putting them in our basket. It was sprinkling when we started, but my son really wanted to keep going, so we sent my husband and Baby E to the car and we kept picking. Soon, it was pouring rain. Not just a little rain; I fully expected to see an Ark, so we decided to make a run for it. The folks at Jean's couldn't have been nicer, ringing us up quickly as we huddled in our mud filled shoes under the shelter (hey, we were in a field, after all--and H loved that we got our shoes "stuck in mud."). They transferred the berries to a cardboard flat box, we paid and off we went!

Let's talk location. Jean's is located off Highway 751 in Apex. I was a little daunted--are we really driving all the way to Apex to pick strawberries? I clearly had a misperception on the distance, because I think it took us a whopping ten minutes on 751 to get there and park.

The prices are good. I happen to think that $1.75/pound is fantastic for fresh strawberries. and if you aren't interested in picking them, you can buy them pre-picked for $4.50/quart.

So, once again, I went venturing into a field for the love of a boy. This time, it will only be a matter of days, not over a decade, before I go back.

LoMo Market

Have you checked out LoMo Market? I checked it out a few weeks ago and I might seriously campaign to bring it to my neighborhood. If you don't know what LoMo Market is, think Farmers' Market meets food truck. Awesome!

I will admit, I wasn't sure what to expect when I drove up to their stop at Briar Chapel, but what I found was great! The inside of the truck is fitted with shelves, bins and refrigerator cases. The cases are filled with seasonal local produce and fabulous locally made foods, from Nello's Sauce (delicious) to BeanPeace Coffee (fair trade beans locally roasted in Durham) to Cottage Lane Kitchen's Spicy Pepper Relish and Huntington Kitchen's granola, you can find everything you need. In fact, you can find everything from baked goods (hello, Scratch!) to meat from Firsthand Foods (formerly Farmhand Foods) and dairy from Chapel Hill Creamery. For the full list of vendors, click

Now, paying. I went with cash, but you don't have to. They take credit cards. Really, could they make life any easier?

This post has been a long time coming, and this introduction is the most difficult thing I've ever written. As many of you know, I was away from the blog for awhile. And most of you know that during that time, I had Sweet Baby Girl E. What only a select few know is that just a few weeks after baby E's delivery, a very close family member was diagnosed with lung cancer. (Let me stop here and say that I am writing this introduction with my family member's full knowledge and approval. We agree that if something good can come of her diagnosis, it should. However, I'm not sharing exactly who it is. No matter what, I believe that any diagnosis is the patient's to share. Not mine. Hence, the reason for the lack of specifics.) A cancer diagnosis is always a kick to the gut...unfortunately, we've been there before. But somehow, this one was completely out of the blue. No risk factors. No symptoms. We were very lucky that it was diagnosed coincidentally. All through a whirlwind of appointments, consultations, second opinions and surgeries, the thing we kept coming back to is: where are the resources? How do we even begin to get through this?

One of the places we were referred to is Cornucopia Cancer Support Center. I fully believe in the work they do. So, I have invited them to share their mission, and their services, on this site. Since I made the invitation, I learned from their Facebook page that they need to raise $100K this month to keep their doors open. Even though it is just getting started, Two Girl Fridays will donate 10% of proceeds this month to Cornucopia House, and we urge you to help as well! The UNC Clef Hangers and Their Old Well Sing

I love the Clef Hangers. I have loved them since I was 18. Thankfully, I no longer have crushes on any of them, because, really, that would probably make me Joan Crawford....... But, during my days at Carolina, you can bet I did have crushed on a select few Clefs. In fact, I married the Man from Montreal because he can sing. He would claim otherwise, but trust me, he can.

So, why am I telling you about the Clef Hangers' 2013 Spring Old Well Sing on the last day of classes? I mean, isn't it just kind of mean since, well, it's over? Nope. I don't think so. Here's why: You can catch them several times a year, and not just at the Old Well Sing. They have concerts, they are on iTunes, and yes, my friends, they have a YouTube Channel.

So, who are these people? They are UNC's oldest male a capella group. They were formed by Barry Saunders back in 1977. They've been around, sporting their trademark vests with buttons, and bowties, ever since. (okay, if you want to get down to brass tacks, the vests and bowties came in 1978). And they put on one.great.show.

The Old Well sing happens every fall and spring semester at the Old Well, on the last day of classes. It's a spirited, fun time with great music, and trust me, you will not be the only non-student there.

NeighborDay 2013! Tell us about your neighborhood! Spread the word!

I know today is Earth Day. I love Earth Day! I think it is a reminder of how we should treat our greatest resource every day. It gets us to connect with others; to come together for a greater good. On that note, I have to tell you about another special day coming up this week: NeighborDay. NeighborDay is Saturday, April 27, and it is all about getting to know your neighbors. Let's face it, I would venture to say that nearly all of us spend more time inside and less time getting to know our neighbors than we ought to. How often do we drive into our respective garages and turn on the television...or the computer...or the...? Well, you get the picture. (I know, that is sounding a little soap-box-y, right? so, on to the good stuff.)

So, NeighborDay was started by the magazine Good, which is both a print magazine and a really cool social media platform. The goal is to build some community and get to know your neighbors, whether that is just a quick introduction, or a full blown block party. I happen to think that the Triangle is one fabulous community of great neighborhoods, but we here at Southern Part of Heaven want you to help us discover your neighborhoods! Leave us a comment, post on our Facebook page , or join the twitter party using the hashtag #SPofHneighbor and tell us what makes your neighborhood a great place to live!

In the meantime, my neighborhood is planning a potluck, and we've heard there are some pretty awesome things going on in Durham on NeighborDay! Is your neighborhood doing anything? We challenge you to get to know your neighbors. They might just be pretty darn cool.

Cafe Carolina (the Meadowmont Version)

I'm not entirely certain why I've not written about Café Carolina before. I mean, really, I'm in Café Carolina as I type this. I'm here frequently, both for Mom's groups, and, well, to have a quiet place to do a little work. oh, yeah, and lunch...many times for lunch.

So, let's talk about Café Carolina. First, the food. It's a good sandwich/salad shop, and given that I think breakfast and brunch are the best meals ever, I'd say it is one fabulous place to stop in a grab a pastry or some breakfast on the go. I'm not a big coffee drinker, but I have friends who love the coffee here. And, of course, they are the home of one spectacular cupcake with Carolina Blue icing (yep, they have Carolina Blue icing at the location in Raleigh, too--so maybe it isn't related to UNC, but why not give me my flight of fancy.)

Now, let's talk logistics. It's a counter service restaurant with plenty of booths and tables. Be forewarned, though, it is popular, so while you can normally find a seat, there are times that they are hard to come by. Parking in Meadowmont is good, but, again, it depends on the time of day. Drive in around 12noon and you are going to circle for a bit before you find a space in front.

Now let's discuss ambience. Tables. Booths. Lots of natural light. Outdoor Seating. Free WiFi. and, depending on the time of day, a veritable hub of intellectual and entrepreneurial energy. My husband and I have both launched consulting businesses recently (I told you it has been a big year)--he in Small Business Management Consulting and I in Epidemiology/Research Analytics & Program Evaluation. I cannot tell you how often I overhear snippets of conversations around us and think--"oh, I should give them a card," or, more often, "Wow, those folks are geniuses!"

If you haven't already, check it out. It will likely become your go-to spot, too. (and the apple-basket pastry rocks!)

Merritts Grill...aka, BLT Heaven

How did I live in Chapel Hill for years before I moved away, and how have I lived here again since 2010 without setting foot in Merritt's? I mean really, was I living under a rock, or what? I mean, I do eat bacon..it isn't like I have a good excuse. *Finally,* I went, a couple of weeks ago, with my ever and unnervingly hip Mom (her suggestion) and my three year old. Wow!

Let's just get down to brass tacks. That BLT was the.best.ever. There isn't another description, so I'm not going to try. oh, and the potato salad. let's just say I need to stay away or I might develop an addiction. and seriously, they have breakfast, burgers, and more. I was just so focused on the BLT that I paid no attention to the rest until I, ahem, looked at a menu.

Now, the ambience. This is an old gas station, redone into a cozy little grill/store. You order at one counter (to the far left), wait for your food, and pay at the front counter. There are a few tables inside, with some fun artwork and photos, and lots of tables outside, both in front and back. Just know, this place is very popular. You may not get a seat, but you will feel right at home. And get this, they even have live music some days.

Moving on to logistics. More specifically, parking. Every time I drove by (prior to my first real visit), parking looked daunting. I should have looked more closely, because you can find parking in gravel lots along the side and back of the store.

Finally, why don't I have a photo of the BLT? Go try one, and you will not stop to take a photo either.

I am coming back!

So, it's been awhile, and I've thought of you often. We'll say that 2012 was both one of the best, and one of the worst years for my extended family, but we're all still here, with heads above water, and a precious new little one named Emily. And I still am not sure who told her she gets to be nearly six months old already!

So, it's time for me to come back to Southern Part of Heaven. I never really left, but I've not been telling you about it lately. Spring is a time for new life, and new starts, and so it goes for this site! I'll be telling you about changes in the area (oh, how I miss Saffron Chapel Hill), some really great non-profits and the work they do, some super incredible shopping, and, of course, the great resources, food and activities we're so lucky to enjoy here in the Triangle.

Saturdays in Saxapahaw

I've wanted to go to Saturdays in Saxapahaw since we moved back to Chapel Hill nearly two years ago--and a few weeks ago, we finally went! It was not at all what I expected, but it was great!

So, Saturdays in Saxapahaw is a free summer music series on Saturday evenings in, you guessed it, Saxapahaw. I had pictured a huge open field with a stage, and crowds. Clearly, I conjured that little vision up in my head, because what I found was so much better. Don't get me wrong, there are lots of people, but the whole atmosphere is laid back. Chill, even. (no, I cannot believe I just used that word, either, but it is pretty darn accurate.) The "field" I envisioned is this large green hill, with trees. There is a small stage at the bottom of the hill, backed by the Saxapahaw Farmers' Market. Families are there sitting on blankets, or in seating they have brought. People have picnics they've brought with them or pick something up from the food trucks that are there. Children are happily running around. It's just a great vibe all the way around.

Let's talk logistics. First, the cost. It's free! Hurray! Now, parking. It can be a challenge, but admittedly seems more overwhelmingly than it is. We ended up parking in an empty grass lot up the hill and up the road a bit from the actual site. You might have to walk a bit, but it really wasn't nearly as bad as we expected. It helped that the weather was gorgeous the night we went.

I fully admit that I don't know where the bathrooms are. How on Earth does the very pregnant woman not know about bathrooms? We ate across the street in the Eddy Pub, where bathrooms were, of course, readily available for their patrons.

The market begins at 5pm, the music at 6pm. Make sure you leave Fido at home, and get out there and enjoy. You will not want to miss it!

South Durham Farmers' Market

Last week, we paid a visit to one of the Triangle's newest Farmers' Markets, and it did not disappoint. In fact, I can't wait to go back!

The South Durham Farmers' Market is located in the parking lot in Greenwood Commons (hello, Papa Mojos!) and has such vendors as Two Chicks Farm, Ninth Street Bakery, Blended Baking, Vollmer Farm, Bull City Farm and Fickle Creek Farm, just to name a few! (the full 2012 vendor list is here).

I loved the selection of fresh fruits and veggies, local meats, baked goods and flowers! The location is very convenient and the parking is plentiful, which is a huge bonus in my book! And it seems they already have a pretty large following, because, it was crowded, but it never felt claustrophobic. --and this isn't a small market. It's not Downtown Durham large, but it does have plenty of vendors!

I'm so excited we've got this new Market in the area, and even more excited that they are going to be a year round. Of course, it does make my Saturday mornings a little more complex, since I have to decide which great farmers market I'm going to shop in...but in my book, that's a great problem to have!

Nantucket Cafe

I've been meaning to post about Nantucket for quite some time. It is, after all, one of our family go-to's. I've liked it since they were a one location store over in Rams Plaza and we went to get muffin tops (the edible kind). When we moved back to Chapel Hill, we were pleased to see that Nantucket has more locations--and dinner service! We really like that the good familiar food, and the casual atmosphere. Of course, the fact that the Farrington Road location is so very close to our house doesn't hurt. (So, full disclosure--this review is only of the Farrington location--we've not been to the others.)

We really like the food. It's casual, good, American food. You can get a variety of sandwiches, pastas, seafood, etc. My favorite dinner has to be the crab stuffed shrimp on spinach risotto with julienne vegetables. And for lunch--they've got one fabulous BLT. Be forewarned--it's huge! and the onion rings aren't healthy, but they are delicious! They also serve cocktails and some really incredible desserts (again--huge!).

In terms of service, we've always had a good experience. The ambience is casual and family friendly. It's not a place for a romantic date night, though I've never thought they billed themselves as such. It's definitely a place for family and friends, with something that can fit everyone's tastes.

Pop's Backdoor Pizza South

I am so excited that Jyotsna from the Masala Wala is back with her take on Pop's Backdoor Pizza South!

Sometimes you are in the mood for a casual pizza joint and Pop’s Backdoor Pizza South in Durhamis just that! This is a new-ish outlet of the popular Pop’s Backdoor in Downtown. The new location is in the newly developing Hope Valley Plaza next to the post office. The space is quite causal, typical of any pizza-sub shop. The menu is posted on the wall and you place your order at the counter. Several of the specialty pies looked delicious so we were happy to hear that they will do half/half pies.

We started with a couple of appetizers for the group. Pop's Famous Mussels were very tasty in tomato broth with lots of garlic and onion. The crispy calamari with harissa aioli was delicious! The batter was light, providing just the right crispness.

Since there were six of us we opted for three small pizzas so that we could try several specialty combinations. Overall we managed to try five specialty pies. The #2 Pop's with pepperoni, homemade sausage, fresh mozzarella and parmesan cheese was quite tasty with a good distribution of toppings. The #4 Margherita with roma tomatoes, basil and fresh mozzarella was nice and simple. The #8 Veggie Lover with artichokes, onions, green peppers, mushrooms, olives, goat cheese was very tasty but a just a bit salty. The #5 The Polpette with housemade meatballs, spinach, roasted garlic, parmesan was my favorite as the homemade meatballs were wonderful with a perfect amount of spices and herbs. Finally, we had the #10 Bar-B-Q: with chicken, bar-b-q sauce, banana peppers, honey chevre which I didn't try this one so I can’t comment on it.

The pizza was quite good, particularly the topping combinations. However, the pizza crust was a little soggy for my taste. They toppings were a little heavy for the crust and falling off. While it is quite a good pie, I think the appetizers were better.

Fridays on the Front Porch--Carolina Inn

It's my favorite time of year in the Triangle--it's warm, but not completely humid yet, and evenings are so wonderful outside! It's also time for all of the great outdoor music, art and film series to start! This weekend, we headed to the first Friday on the Front Porch of the season at the Carolina Inn, and had a wonderful time!

I'll admit, when we got there, I was daunted by what seemed to be tough parking and a huge crowd. I soon found I had nothing to worry about. We were able to park a stone's throw away in the Swain lot on campus (it is paid parking, so make sure you have money with you) and navigating the crowd was a non-issue. We were even able to get seats. Okay, I'll admit, being pregnant doesn't hurt there, and we were scoping for seats, but we were able to find some, and a nice empty patch of grass!

I loved the live music (and my son had a blast dancing his little toddler bottom off), and the food was great! They serve a picnic menu, but trust me, it's better than any picnic I've put together! The barbeque was fabulous and the mac and cheese--well, let's just say we'll be going back for it again! And of course, what Chapel Hill event would be complete without local craft beer? the Carolina Inn features some of Carolina Brewery's best!

The lines got a little long, but we didn't mind waiting--it was a beautiful night, and we were surrounded by great music, happy people, and some very friendly dogs (most of which my son wanted to bring home).

At $10 for an adult meal, $5 for a child's meal, and $2 for non-alcoholic drinks, I first thought the prices were a little steep; but for the amount of food you get, they aren't. Honestly, you'd pay more for Friday night dinner, even casual dinner, in most any restaurant. You cannot take outside food in, but the good news is, there is no cover--so the only things you pay for are food and drink (and depending on where you park, parking).

It was a perfect evening under the trees! I would go with family, for date night, or to entertain out of town guests. In fact, there are few better ways to wind down after a long week (and the incredible weather didn't hurt). We will most certainly be heading back soon!

In the spirit of full disclosure, I have to tell you that Clay, the proprietor of Food Neighbor, contacted me to ask me to try the service, and I did receive all the makings for two meals for free. With that said, the opinions that follow are entirely my own, and aside from the gratis meals to test, I have received no payment or other compensation for writing about this service. Now, on to the review.

Do you ever wish you could try a recipe, but there are a few ingredients that you just wouldn't use for anything else? Or better yet, don't you wish you had someone to prep the ingredients in those neat little bowls like they have on cooking shows. I mean really--cut out the majority of the prep work, and who wouldn't cook more often? Enter Food Neighbor. I didn't quite get what they are all about until I tried them, and I'm really glad I did. You see, they aren't a meal service where you can buy prepared or frozen meals (though I seriously love those); this is a service that does that prep work for you, and maximizes your grocery dollar, because you only get enough of each ingredient for your recipe.

So, how exactly does this work? Well, you sign up for their service and you choose your meals their list of offerings the week before. (it isn't a subscription service--you only pay for the meals you order, and you can order one or many). Then, Food Neighbor does the shopping and the prep work for you. You get the measured out ingredients for each full meal in a handy reusable grocery bag. We're talking separated, labelled, measured ingredients and the printed recipe instructions on a card. Then, you put the meal together and cook it.

I tried it out. My biggest questions were 1) how much time will it take? 2) how difficult will the recipes be? and 3) is it really only enough for two people (though you can order for 4)? I tried the lettuce wraps one night, and the pork tenderloin with homemade mashed potatoes (mine usually come from a box) and squash medley. I was surprised at how little time each took, since the majority of the prep work was taken out. (okay, I had to chop a little cilantro and rinse some lettuce, but really, that might have taken 5 minutes--and marinating the pork loin was to a cinch). Difficulty: not hard at all. The recipe card spells out every single detail. In terms of the amount of food, I can see that the meals for two might not feed 4 adults, but they certainly fed 2 adults and one growing toddler without issue. Oh, and by the way: Delicious! (just make sure you take their advice and add the soy sauce to the lettuce wraps).

I loved that I didn't have to buy a whole bottle of fish sauce just to try the lettuce wraps. I also loved that the food was very fresh. Using this service will take some planning, though. I think it is a huge bonus that the food is fresh, you do need to go ahead use it soon after getting it so you don't let anything spoil. And, while it doesn't take long at all to prepare, and are doing more than throwing it in the oven. But really, I need to plan my meals better, and I love that it encourages cooking more, all while stretching my grocery dollar and making life easier.

The Fitness Challenge: It's a Wrap

Wow! the Briar Chapel 5K was Saturday! We've been working up to this since January, and I would love to tell you that I ran it. But baby had something else in mind. This Mom in Chapel Hill got sidelined with contractions. I was happy, though, to cheer Allison and Sarah on! Can I tell you, those women rocked that race, and trust me, there were some pretty intense hills! Thanks so much to Briar Chapel and the Abundance Foundation for having us, and to Big Frog in Durham for our very cool t-shirts!

So, does this mean that I'm ditching all things exercise? Not at all! I'm just listening to my body and finding other ways to exercise. I'd love to hear about how you have exercised through pregnancy! In fact, maybe we'll just have to think up another challenge. Stay tuned....

Weekend Picks and Date Night Ideas!

It's hard to believe that yet another week has flown by, but Fridays are always welcome in our house!

So, you have to know that as my biggest weekend pick, I have to recommend the Briar Chapel Earthday Celebration! And while the bazaar and food truck rodeo (Chatham County's first! Yahoo!) begin at 3pm on April 21, the Moms in Chapel Hill will be there for the 5K at 9:00am and we'd love to see you there. If you can't make it to the race, make sure you follow us on twitter (@mominchapelhill and @southrnptheaven)! Since this pregnant Mommy will be walking it, I'll also be tweeting all the action!

Now, more about that Food Truck Rodeo at Briar Chapel! Head out in the afternoon to try out one of the Triangle's newest food trucks, BaguettAboutit, and many of our local faves! Think the Parlour, Will and Pops, and Chirba Chirba. And what would a food truck rodeo be without award winning local beer from Carolina Brewery and Fullsteam! Delicious!

More in the mood for a scavenger hunt? Love Chapel Hill's annual downtown scavenger hunt is this Saturday! We're talking fun and cool prizes from some of Chapel Hill's greatest businesses!

And if shopping for deals is your game, the annual ABC (Attic, Basement, Closet) sale at the Chapel of the Cross is Saturday morning. With everything from clothes to furniture, to baked goods, it's a sale you do not want to miss. Having both shopped it and worked it, the best advice I can give is to get there early! Lines form and items sell out--it's just that good!

I'm not a big ice cream fan. I don't dislike it, but I don't ever feel the need to run out and get some. (okay, if hot fudge and a brownie are involved, that could be a different story--but I don't crave it.) However, after eating ice cream from the Parlour (one of Durham's fabulous food trucks, or, ummm...buses) today, I might be in trouble. You see, I tried it, and it was incredible!

I had the vanilla malt chip (yum! malt flavoring in vanilla with chocolate chips) and my two year old had the chocolate. The vanilla malt chip was delicious and the chocolate wasn't bland, weak, chocolate--I'll call it chocolate with a presence. It was fantastic! With offerings from the traditional to their famed salted butter caramel to strawberry basil, banana rum sorbet and champagne mango sorbet (going vegan? they've got it!) to the their chocolate stout ice cream featuring Fullsteam beer, they have something for everyone. Oh, and how could I forget? They have toppings for your ice cream, and they also serve up sizeable shakes and ice cream sodas!

Prices aren't super-cheap, but I can promise you that we've spent more on chain frozen yogurt, and not gotten half the flavor or experience.

Ice cream on a food truck (it's a bus)? Yes! They make it in small batches at the Cookery in Durham, and use as many local ingredients as possible, including dairy from Jackson Dairy and Homeland Creamery. They also use lots of local fruit from Lyon Farms, and the coffee they use comes from Joe Van Gogh. How's that for going local?

If you haven't already tried it, run, don't walk, to find the Parlour! Their website below will tell you where they are on any given day. Their ice cream is well worth tracking them down. But forewarned is fairwarned, it's addictive. Thank goodness for the Mom in Chapel Hill Fitness Challenge--otherwise, I would be in trouble!

While I know I have told you bits and pieces about Acme before, but with Mothers' Day and graduation coming up, it's high time I did a proper post on one of my favorite restaurants in the Triangle!

First, the ambience. I love the low lighting and the intimate seating. It makes for a definite romantic feel, without all the, well, cheesiness and pretense that sometimes come with a romantic vibe. On a busy night (and most are) seating can be somewhat close. This doesn't bother me in the slightest, as I have never felt I was close enough to be part of the next table's conversation.

My husband and I both love the food! The fried oyster salad with bacon and bourbon viniagrette is one of my favorites, and my husband swears by the pan seared scallops. (Read: he will not get anything else). And if you are into the local scene, you will be happy to know that they source plenty of their ingredients, locally, using the Carrboro Farmers' Market and Core Sound Seafood. Now, the service. It.is.stellar. We are always promptly seated, with reservations--but let's face it, some places, a reservation gets you in the door, but not necessarily seated quickly, and our drink glasses never come close to empty.

Prices. I'd call them reasonable. And, as with any restaurant, it really depends on what you order, and what you drink. However, if you want a steal, they do have $12.95 Tuesdays. (I am seriously thinking Tuesday should be the new date night!)

Finally, the logistics. Acme is located on Main Street in Carrboro, so you might be wondering where to park. There is some very convenient parking located behind the block of stores (close to the bank).

Now, I need to figure out a time to try out their brunch. (here's hoping the Man from Montreal is reading my not so subtle hints.....)

Fitness Challenge--It's Race Week!

Oh.My.Goodness! Race week is here! I'll just keep it real for you here,--I am only walking it, and I am nervous. Baby just doesn't want to cooperate lately when I exercise. Or maybe it is my pregnant body that isn't cooperating. Either way, my plan is to walk the 5K and not push too hard. I fully anticipate that Sarah and Allison will wave at me as they cross the finish line and I still have a long way to go. But, hey, I'm still doing it, and I'm happy to still be exercising! (for better or worse, at this point in my pregnancy with H, I was on partial bedrest). And while we may be winding down this fitness challenge, I hope you will stay tuned (ie, keep me accountable), as I make fitness a priority during, and after, this pregnancy!

A Few of My Favorite Things

Happy Easter! Happy Passover! I hope that everyone is having a wonderful holiday! We've had a great Holiday weekend full of baseball (hurray, Durham Bulls! ), fabulous food, Easter Egg hunts, and plenty of chocolate! Here are a few of my favorite things this week!

First, one of my favorite local blogs is Hines Sight Blog, and I love her post on a Simply Southern Easter! The tablescape is is beautiful, and though Easter may be nearly over, it's certainly adaptable to the rest of spring!

For the sports fans out there, the first Durham Bulls homestand of the season was this weekend. We went Saturday night and it was great! I didn't make it to a game last year when we moved back, so it had been twelve years since I had been to a game. Everyone had fun, from my two year old son to my sixty-something Dad!

In case you didn't read it, we had another fabulous post this week from Jyotsna (The Masala Wala) on one of Chapel Hill's most famous BBQ joints: the Pig! and since we are talking favorites and the Masala Wala, you have to check out the post on her site about a new restaurant in the Cypress on the Hill space: CholaNad!

As you get ready for the week, make sure you pencil in the Food Truck Rodeo this Wednesday after the first Wednesday market of the season at the Carrboro Farmers' Market! It's a fundraiser for Farmer Foodshare featuring Monuts, Triangle Raw Foodists, Boxcarr Farms, Chirba Chirba and Baguettaboutit! Wow! How could you go wrong?

Weekend Picks and Date Night Ideas is back! It's Easter Weekend and the beginning of Passover, and there are plenty of great local things to do if you have family and friends in town!

First, we're so excited about the Durham Bulls first homestand! I cannot wait to get back into that stadium! and if you are up for some comedy, give Funny Business Live a try on Friday night!

Does spring have you as excited about Farmers' Markets as it does me? If so, head over to the Carrboro Farmers' Market, the Chapel Hill Farmers' Market (hello, Big Bundts!) or the Durham Farmers' Market (yum--Monuts! and we can't wait to try Berenbaum's Bakery!) (okay, so the pregnant chick here is craving baked goods, which may not bode so well for the Fitness Challenge, but I assure you that these Farmers' Markets also have incredible produce!).

Need a great restaurant? How about GlassHalfFull, Acme, or Panzanella?

Want to hit the trails? We love the Meadowmont Trails! or maybe you would just like to enjoy a beautiful afternoon (hopefully) this weekend in the middle or Chapel Hill's own little oasis. Glorious is the only way to describe the Arboretum this time of year.
