A girl is walking down a lonely street. She is soon being tailed by an eclectic mix of baddies, who could be part-time chaiwallahs but are surely full-time professional extras. Quick cuts of her feet picking up some pace and their boots thumping away purposefully. They finally grab her and she squeals enthusiastically and before you know it, another person who was trailing her path is there to her rescue. Dhishoom! Dhishoom! The baddies are on the floor and the girl is in his arms and the audience is charmed. We can hop over to the Swiss Alps for a song now. This and many others qualify as Bollywood’s fundas for patao-ing the girl of your dreams. So here are a few that we are cherry-picking for you this Valentine ’s Day.

Domesticated and devoted

Nothing screams one-woman man more than someone who comes across as a mumma’s boy. Now, you may argue that no self-respecting man would want to seem like a remote-controlled toy who is spineless and emasculated. But you would be surprised by the magical powers of appearing ridiculously attached to your mummy. Many women find this to be an added asset as they see that you are willingly domesticated and it’s only a matter of time before the leash can do the change of hands. Bollywood biggies have rolled down their sleeves time and again to play the house rat who is always available on call and makes ‘hen-pecked’ seem like a respectable and accepted way of life.

Frankly speaking

If you’re not creative enough to script heroic tales of your imaginary adventures, it’s always good to say it exactly the way it is. Even if that means admitting to not having any hobbies or laudable talents. Honesty is often the best policy during courtship. It declares right away that if you can be trusted, you will always have an open dialogue about the most personal issues (no matter how flippant they may be) and that is a rare trait one can find in most men (as per the women’s glossy mags). The Baadshahs of Bollywood have often exposed their candid self to their leading ladies, earning their empathy, that over time and nudging can snowball into concern and even love. Voila!

Now, this may not even seem like a thing that would induce any batting of eye-lids. But subliminally, seeming the man among men can have fringe benefits. Simply put, it conveys that you’re popular, social and that you blend well. And with gender equality on a high, it’s easy to assume that the one who is heading the show in the male brigade can surely light the torch for the women as well. So, before getting around with the women of your dreams, try to become the boss among your male friends. But yes, draw the line when bro-mance takes over from male-bonding or it will defeat the purpose of this exercise or not?

From SRK to Aamir, Saif to Salman, every Bollywood hero worth his six-pack abs has indulged in some healthy teasing. There is a thin line between being a Casanova and being one who makes women comfortable yet doesn’t exploit them. The idea is to trigger the notion that women feel comfortable, safe and happy with you. This doesn’t mean you’re gay but it also doesn’t mean that you’re dating every girl you hang out with. So you’re great company and every girl wants to be with you. A little bit of jealousy can get the women biting each other’s heads off to have you. Women can be fierce, try to ensure as little bloodshed as possible.

From ‘Hum Aapke Hain Kaun’ to the last shaadi-dance-sangeet movie, Bollywood has firmly made one point: Weddings are the best venue to pursue womenkind. Just seeing two souls formalizing their love for each other can have a delicious effect on estrogen-fueled beings. And if you've learnt one thing from Bollywood heroes, it is to attack the women when they’re at their weakest, which is at the dance floor. This may require prior training since the idea is to have a good time and shake a leg or two and having two left feet could ensure you break a leg or two, scoring only in embarrassing yourself.

The common man approach

Amol Palekar redefined the common man and even ensured that being a nobody can be cool and also appeals to a certain set of ladies. And why not? Nobody likes a show-off but everyone likes a simple, practical and straight-forward person. This sort may not be aware of the latest BMW models in the market but will surely know about the many flavours at the beachside ice cream vendor. Greeting card companies endorse it as ‘simple pleasures of life’ and some people call it middle-class living but being a man of little needs is like being a tiny pup by the roadside rolling the in a puddle of muck. Why? Because both have the same effect of women.

Cool cats keep it classy

Moving on from being middle-class, it is equally important to acquire a certain amount of finesse in your overall manner. Taking cue from the cult song ‘Bade Miya Deewane’ from ‘Shagird’, the way one speaks and conducts oneself is what makes a man. So you are what you wear, eat, don’t eat etc. Too picky and you move into another category but just the right set of habits and you’re just fine. Don’t believe us? See what Amol Palekar did in ‘Choti Si Baat’ and how it paid off. If it doesn’t come naturally, don’t force it. But try to inculcate a few finer things in life since the simple things will only get you as far.

Grow old with you

This may be scary and unimaginable but most women go to the extent of sizing you up to a point that they visualize how you would look when you grow old. This is because the idea is to grow old together. There is very little you can do to manage this but clicking black and white pictures with your partner may be a start. You will still look just as old as you are but this colourless filter (check above picture) has a unique quality of timelessness that could just tame her imagination. Well, momentarily at least.

No Hotel California, please

This may be the oldest trick in the book but there is just something about being able to strum that guitar rhythmically enough to create sounds that soothe the nerves. And what has worked in college canteens and under balconies for our onscreen rockstars will work for you just as well. Unless of course, you can only play ‘Hotel California’.

Playing a country boy

This is a formula that dates back to 50s Hollywood, when Rock Hudson transformed his big city boy self into a country boy to thrill Doris Day. Later, many Bollywooders ditched their fancy accents for a more rustic style to do just that. Remember Govinda in the 15 odd movies where he played a village lad, ignorant of the ways of city life? It just extends a certain amount of misguided innocence along with many positive features: honest, dependable, idealist, family-oriented etc. A country boy is quickly identified for his rural mannerisms and simple outlook at life. While going overboard in this act could make you look like a mindless simpleton, just the right mix of sensible and sensitive could do wonders.

Seal the deal

This is the last yet important lesson that our Bollywood gurus could offer. Hindi films have explored the entire gamut of kissing as you will see in the video below. From full-mouthed smooches to teeny-weeny chummas, each has its own defining feature and allocated time of delivery. So when to mouth which one is of paramount importance. What worked for Aamir Khan while riding a bike (in Ghulam) could land you in the ICU and what Spiderman did upside down could lead to rush of blood to the head. Without being too preachy, let’s just say that this one, you have to figure out for yourself. Just feel the energy and do what you believe won’t get you slapped. Happy Valentine ’s Day!

The news of Superstar Mahesh Babu going shirtless for his upcoming film has already spread like wildfire. But the thing that prompted the actor to go the extra mile is surely the impressive script narrated by extremely talented director Sukumar.

According to the sources close to the star, the script inspired Mahesh Babu very much that he has agreed to come out of his comfort zone. Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan on Wednesday said that he is praying for the speedy recovery of Indian Cricketer Yuvraj Singh, who is battling malignant tumour in lungs.

"He is a great fighter. My prayers go out for his quick recovery so that he returns to where he belongs, to the cricket field," said Aamir Khan.

Yuvraj Singh is currently undergoing chemotherapy in the Cancer Research Institute in Boston, US. He thanked his fans and well-wishers for their support. "Thank you again to all my friends back home! Thank you to the media for there support and respecting my privacy," he tweeted.

The left hander even expressed confidence that he would wear the India jersey and represent the Country soon.

With the prestigious Celebrity Cricket League heading for semi-finals, Telugu team is getting its shoes tightened to give a tough combat. Though Akhil had played only one match for Telugu Warriors in this season, still he is a key player in turning the game considered with his previous records.

With so much of pressure from Venky, the captain of Telugu Warriors, Akhil finally completed his study work in the United States and planned to come back for semi-finals. A last minute delay from the young-chap missed him a flight to India, costing much to Telugu cricket team. Sources are saying that the young all-rounder of Telugu Cricket Team has made arrangements for the next flight and could land here in Chennai exactly at match time.

Tollywood hunk Daggubati Rana has come to the defence of his best buddy Ram Charan, when one of his tweets gave an impression that he don't know the meaning of '3 AM Friend'.

"On that particular day, both Me and Charan were shooting for our films at Ramoji Film City. When we met during the break time, Charan jokingly asked me about '3 AM Friend' and immediately he posted the same on Twitter. It's not like he don't know about it, but it was done in leighter vein," said Rana.

"What does a 3am friend exactly mean?? Sum1 plss explain," tweeted Ram Charan a month back, when South hottie Trisha claimed that Rana is her '3 AM friend' in film industry. (3 AM friend: A friend whom you call first in an emergency)

Prince Mahesh Babu has been causing a mania across the box office and his tsunami has been very difficult to control or compete by any other star. Meanwhile, another member from his family has now forayed into the cine circuit as a hero. He is Mahesh Babu's 'Bava' Sudhir Babu.

Sudhir has made his debut with the film 'SMS' and here is an inside update. It is heard that those who saw the film have given a common advice to Sudhir. Mani Ratnam is introducing veteran actor Karthik's son Gautham as hero and Samanta is the female lead. News is that regular shoot of the movie will commence from 23 of this month, mean while the makers are revealed the first look poster of this film and raised the curiosity.

This will be Maniratnam's Love story after his evergreen romantic film 'Sakhi'. Arjun, Arvind Swamy will be seen in key roles in Kadal. AR Rahman is composing music for Kadal, Cinematography by Rajiv Menon, Editing by Sreekar Prasad and Maniratnam producing this movie under his own banner Madras Talkies.

Dhoni Tamil Film Review: Prakash Raj, who made debut as director in Kannada with the remake of Aakasamantha, comes to show his directorial skills to Telugu and Tamil audiences with Dhoni. It is also a remake of Marathi movie “Shikshanacha Aaicha Gho” directed by Mahesh Manjrekar. This film deals about the problems with the current education system and a middle class father’s fight for his son’s better future.

Story:

Subramanyam (Prakash Raj) is a lower middle class widower with two kids. He works as a clerk in a government office and runs his family on tight budget. He never compromises on his kids education and he spends a fortune on their studies. But his son Karthik (Aakash) is not interested in studies, but is a talented cricket player. Subramanyam can’t just leave his son staying away from education and a secured future. In one angry moment, he hits his kid and goes into coma. Subramanyam then realizes his mistake and starts to fight against the education system.

Analysis:

Dhoni is a predictable story right from the outset. We know what it is going to offer from the trailers itself. What counts is how the story was narrated. Prakash Raj has only half succeeded in getting his narration correct.

First half of the film is really good with some good humor sprinkled here and there. Prakash Raj sets the right atmosphere for a middle class family and he has brought the life in to the film with natural scenes. At times we feel like we are watching our neighbor’s or our own life on screen.

However, the story gets too complicated at the interval point. Whom should the protagonist blame for his son’s condition? Where does the fault lie? Prakash Raj’s search for answers for the above questions doesn’t seem logical. The film completely takes sidetrack from the TV talk show scene (which was poorly conceived). Climax is not up to the mark.

Dhoni failed to live up to the cause that it was made for. On a whole it is a good attempt that fails to get the message right.

Performances:

Prakash Raj is brilliant as an actor. He has excelled in every scene. Aakash is fine within his limitations. Radhika Apte is neat. Murali Sharma’s role is interesting but poorly etched. Gollapudi, Tanikella Bharani and Brahmanandam did their bit.

Technicalities:

Concept of the film is good. Screenplay in the second half is pretty bad. Dialogues are natural. Cinematography is fine. Editing could have been better.

Ilayaraja’s background score is an asset. Songs are in sync with the mood of the film. Production values are up to the mark. Prakash Raj’s direction is good in parts. He should have handled the second half in a better way. Talk show scene is crucial from the subject point of view, but Prakash Raj failed as a director in that scene. Even the climax scenes highlight his shortcomings as a director.

Final Word:

Dhoni can be watched once for the intentions it was made. A better second half with heart touching moments might have done wonders to it.

Story:

Rushi (Aravind Krishna) is an arrogant medico, who wins hearts of his co students and tutors slowly. Pooja (Supriya Sailaja) and Rushi’s friendship starts with few misunderstandings and later they fall in love. Rushi gives aid to Karthik, a seven year old boy in an emergency. That irks the authorities and they reprimand him for treating a kid without proper knowledge. Rushi learns that Karthik is suffering from heart ailment and there is a need of heart transplant. Meanwhile, Rushi suffers with brain tumor and he wants his heart to be transplanted for Karthik. Rest of the film is about Rushi’s legal struggle and his battle to save Karthik.

Analysis:

These days films are not as promising as the trailers. Rushi is an exception for it. The film is definitely better than the trailers. The film has a novel point and doesn’t follow the beaten track. There is a lot of research done by the director about the medicos and it is evident. He got a solid story on hands but the treatment needed some fine tuning before it hit the floors.

Director’s inexperience played foul game in crucial scenes where he faltered big time. The film lacked the drama despite having so much scope for it. There is an imitation of Happy Days and 3 Idiots here and there. Except for the heroine, none of the side characters are etched properly.

The other medicos around Rushi behave so mean that it would be hard to believe that they are going to take up a responsible job. First half is okay with routine scenes and the second half starts on a good note. Climax is a letdown with poor handling of the director.

Performances:

Aravind Krishna’s performance is flat with single expression throughout the film. He needs to sharpen his skills if he is planning for fulltime career in films. His dialogue delivery also needs some adjustments. Sailaja Supriya is confident and there is ease in her performance. Suresh is good as an arrogant professor. Master Gourav provides few light moments.

Technicalities:

Don Chandra’s songs are bad, but background score is neat. Tribhuvan Babu’s cinematography and Sreekar Prasad’s editing stands out. Production values are good. Director excelled in few scenes and faltered in key episodes. On a whole he shows promise.

Final Word:

Rushi is a novel film which surprises the viewers with a very good story point. Had they got the execution right, it would have been a good film too. Try it if you are looking for something different from the routine run of the mill stuff.
