Happy new year to all our friends, hope you had a good break. We've both been really busy with work over the last few months so not been able to do as much Southside Happenings as we'd have liked. Will try to get back onto things properly soon and might rope in a few assistants out there for a couple of things we've got planned. Here's to a good year for us all. The other day we took a little walk to Shawlands to pick up a few things and to start getting ideas for Christmas Presents to buy. Last year we managed to get all but one of our gifts from Southside Shops and the aim is to do so again. So we are looking for suggestions from you guys. Shawlands Town Centre Plan

Last year Glasgow City Council carried out a public consultation asking people who use Shawlands Town Centre for their thoughts on how the area could be improved. Out of the huge number of peopel who live and work in the area only 1240 responses were recieved and these are published in a report below. The Council have now generated a plan for the future of the area and they are after your thoughts. Lets try and get more than 1240 people giving comment on the proposals good or bad. It's a Southside institution's birthday this week and its just a mere 80 years old!! Serving the Southside Community since 1931 (when the above photo was taken) the Brooklyn Cafe has long been the haunt for generations looking for a big Sunday breakfast and a tub of their famous ice-cream (listed in the Herald as one of the 100 things to do in Scotland before you die). Leaves are dropping from the trees, the nights are getting dark and there is a chill in the air. Must mean we are right in the heart of autumn and that Halloween is not too far away. I had a "discussion" with an American friend the other day over the origin of Halloween. They insisted that it was started by her US ancestors and that we had all copied them.
