Also, interesting that analogue still has its place:

The outputs to this process are both film and digital. We’re restoring high resolution digital files as well as recording a new negative.

We do both because digital files, while they are convenient to work with, and they allow us a wide range of options, for archival means, we still want a piece of film to put away.

Film is a known quantity – we can put that on a shelf and store it in the proper conditions and that thing will last 100 years plus.

Adobe has released its pricing for CS6 and Creative Cloud – Creative Cloud looks like a compelling proposition but, as always, users outsite the US lose out.

Some quick analysis of pricing…

Design & Web Premium is likely the most popular package, including Photoshop Extended, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat Pro, Flash Professional, Dreamweaver, and Fireworks.

To buy CS6 Design & Web Premium outright costs £1,795 in the UK and ~$2,000 in the US – 30% less.

The classic $ / £ conspiracy.

Creative Cloud is introduced at £46.88 per month in the UK – £563 per year which equates to just over 3 years’ worth of usage of the Design & Web Premium package, which seems competitive.

But, in fact, Creative Cloud is comparable to the CS6 Master Collection as it includes access to every one of the CS6 applications. On that basis, the cost of Creative Cloud is comparable to just under 5 years’ worth of usage of the Master Collection.

The cost of Creative Cloud in the US is ~$55/month – again, almost 30% cheaper than in the UK.

Then there is some extra pain for the UK as Adobe delivers downloads from the Republic of Ireland so sales are subject to VAT (sales tax) at 23% as opposed to the UK rate of 20%.

There is a special offer available to existing customers with a licenced product newer than CS3 – full Creative Cloud membership at a price of £27.34/month for the first year (£328 in year 1 = ~42% cheaper).

Despite the disparities, Creative Cloud does seem like a viable option, and includes a number of additional benefits over the core applications – software updates, cloud storage, device sync, TypeKit, Muse, etc.

Of course, its value depends on usage – if you only used the Design Standard applications for example (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat), the value of Creative Cloud is reduced to just 2 years’ worth of usage.

Creative Cloud is certainly an interesting and positive direction for Adobe to take, but it’s not quite a no-brainer due to the way Adobe packages and prices its products. At almost £600 per year, Creative Cloud still represents a significant investment in software that you’re effectively renting, especially given the trend towards commodity pricing that Apple seems to be taking (e.g. OS X, Aperture).

Related to the “free” debate, some interesting snippets from Marco Arment on the costs of running the Instapaper service:

My experiment with Amazon CloudSearch was going very well until I imported half of subscribers’ bookmarks and saw it would cost $10k/month.
– @marcoarment

(Implementing my search manually on very fast dedicated hardware: about $1500/month.)
– @marcoarment

Bear in mind that Instapaper is currently a one-time purchase of £2.99 ($4.99) that quite clearly has significant ongoing costs to the developer.

Make that a team of developers & designers in an office facility, and you have some pretty serious overheads that need to be covered somehow.
