Julie Canlis currently teaches at Whitworth University in their theology MA program. She received a Ph.D. in Theology (University of St Andrews), a Masters of Christian Studies (emphasis in Spiritual Theology, Regent College), and has a B.A. in Comparative History of Ideas (University of Washington). Julie wrote her doctoral dissertation in Scotland, a work published as Calvin’s Ladder: A Spiritual Theology of Ascent and Ascension (Eerdmans, 2010), which grapples with Calvin’s vision for the way humanity ‘becomes itself’ by participating in Christ. It won the Templeton Prize for Theological Promise in 2007 and the Christianity Today Award of Merit for Theology in 2011. She is married to Matt, stays at home with their four children, and teaches Sunday School for 6-8 year olds. She is committed to slow food and slow church.

Julie is part of The Abbey Summer School team and will be one of the speakers this summer.

Shelves can certainly be filled with books on spiritual formation & spiritual direction (he says to himself) and perhaps it is hard to sort through the mix. With that in mind, let me commend to you David Benner (BA, McMaster; MA & PhD, York).

"Dr. Benner was the founding Director of the Institute for Psychospiritual Health (Toronto), founding Chair of the Graduate Department of Psychological Studies at Wheaton College (Wheaton, Illinois), Founding Executive Editor of the journal, Conversations, and a founding member (Charter Member) of the International Society for the Study of Multiple Personality Disorder (subsequently, International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation). He has been an Associate Fellow (Psychology and Spirituality) at The Centre for Studies in Religion and Society, University of Victoria (Victoria, British Columbia) and served as Distinguished Author in Residence at the Carey Centre, University of British Columbia. Currently he serves as Emeritus Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Spirituality at Psychological Studies Institute, Richmont Graduate University (Atlanta, Georgia) and as Consulting Psychologist for GAP Adventures – a global adventure tour company.

Beyond his work in psychology and spirituality, David’s other principal interests are sailing, cycling, jazz, and hiking. He and his wife, Juliet Benner, live on Vancouver Island in Canada where they are actively involved in the leadership and life of Christ Church Cathedral in Victoria." (source)

One month hiatus...to learn English (it's about time)

Well, I have been on a wee bit of a hiatus from the bloggin' desk. The past month I have been in class learning all the nuts and bolts of English (please stop editing my writing--let's consider this blog a bit of a grammar-free zone). The TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) program came complete with an wonderful line-up of fellow students and a superb instructor brimming with linguistic genius. In our last week of class we welcomed some new friends (real live language learners!...finally) who made the whole learning experience more real and special. Thanks to each of you (them).

STOP the Traffic | Compassion in Action 2

My church, RockPointe, has launched this year's Compassion in Action initiative--STOP the Traffic--to raise awareness & funding for local and global initiatives. This year the focus is awareness and funding for ministries involved in stopping human trafficking.

On the weekend of April 17 & 18, 2010, hundreds of people from Calgary, Cochrane and the surrounding area decided to make a difference and help the victims and those at risk of Human Trafficking in the Ukraine, Ethiopia, Cambodia, Costa Rica and in Calgary, Alberta. Children, Youth and Adults have came together in groups of 10 to 20 people with the purpose of increasing awareness about the problem of Human Trafficking and to raise funds to help the victims and those at risk. A total of 65 groups were formed and each group received $500, $750 or $1000 to use in accomplishing the two goals.

This spring, the 65 Compassion in Action groups will run events, sponsor activities and sell products to help stop the traffic. You can be a part of what is happening! Gather a group of your friends together and sign up by April 30 to receive "seed money." Or be a part of what is happening by becoming involved in what is happening around Calgary, click on the Attend an Event link to find an event that you can be a part of.

Together we can Stop the Traffic and make a difference in the lives of victims and those at risk of Human Trafficking!

A Bike Ride...into Austria!

A group of friends reunioned in the northeast corner of Switzerland and, on the map, our whereabouts appeared very close to Austria. Close indeed--walkable and bikeable. So, with just the right number of bikes, we all went for a lovely cruise into Austria.
