Today is Ash Wednesday where traditionally fasting for 40 days begin. While I may not fall into any specific group of worship, my wife does and being respectful of her we as a family each give something up for lent… kinda.

Instead of giving up something my wife tries to do something good to better her life and those around her. This year I am going to try something like that to better myself and my family – more video games! By playing more games I will be less stressed and will be able to handle a hyper three year old, a two year old, and a seven month old with patience.

The Booger does not think of lent the same way as my family, instead of doing something good for others he uses the tradition of Ash Wednesday to take advantages of others.

Last Week In Comics:
A fresh take on 5 day-old comics.

Reviewed this week: Amazing Spider-Man #679.1, Batman #6,
Catwoman #6, Nightwing #6, and Wonder Woman #6.

Amazing Spider-Man #679.1

5 Word Review: .1 – A Good Starting Point?
Story: Dan Slott & Chris Yost
Art: Matthew Clark & Tom Palmer

With Spider-Man being the only Marvel book I read regularly, I was under the influence that all of the .1 issues were great jumping on points for new readers. While this issue does a great job describing the book’s supporting cast and Peter’s new “base of operations” at Horizon Labs, this issue does nothing to bring us readers back for the next issue. Maybe I’m just biased and annoyed since I am still waiting for the Sinister Six arc to continue,or technically for it to start, but this issue was pure filter.

As a way to bring readers up to speed with all things Peter Parker, this book was successful, but to bring readers back every month this stand alone issue was just that – standing alone.

Amazing Spider-Man #679.1 gets a score of:

2 out of 5

Batman #6

5 Word Review: Batman Mental Strength Prevails Again
Story: Scott Snyder
Art: Greg Capullo & Johnathan Glapton

Wow that was weird… In standard Batman fashion, Bruce escapes the near death trap that the Court of Owls set up. In standard fashion, Batman was always aware of his surroundings using his expert detective skills to prevail. In standard fashion, he was patient waiting for his enemy to become confident before the Dark Knight plays his hand.

This book had everything that you want and expect from a Batman comic. Even though I still have yet to figure out who the Court of Owls are and what their end game is. This mystery is what sets this book apart from every other comic on the shelf right now. Even though Batman won the battle, it still feels as if he is the underdog in the ongoing war against his enemy.

Batman #6 gets a score of:

4 out of 5

Catwoman #6

5 Word Review: A True DCU Crime Comic
Story: Judd Winick
Art: Guillem March

Other than being set in the Gotham City this book doesn’t feel like it belongs in a universe full of super powered heroes and villains… and that is a good thing.

This book is more of a crime thriller/drama than a super hero story. I watched Selina Kyle go from a fun loving cat-burglar who loves both the money and the thrill of the caper get involved in something bigger. This book feels like one of those movies where some nobody is in the wrong place at the wrong time and has to fight for their life. The difference between this book and those movies is that this one starts off with a character who enjoyed walking the fine line between right and wrong before being in the wrong place at the wrong time. After the first issue people were complaining about the scene with Batman, but now that everything has unfolded, that scene was important for the character development of both characters. If that scene turned you off (pun intended) of this book – get over it! This book is one of the best that DC puts out (again intended) every month.

Catwoman #6 gets a score of:

4 out of 5

Nightwing #6

5 Word Review: “Batman Lite” Not Nightwing
Story: Kyle Higgins
Art: Eddy Barrows, Geraldo Borges, Ebber Ferreria & Ruy Jose

I consider myself a Nightwing fan. I have read every issue of his solo series and in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s I thought his character was more fun to read than his mentor. Dick Grayson’s version of Batman was the best take on the character in a long time. What I think makes Dick a great character is that his personality overrides his secret identity.

In a book where the personality of a character shines the brightest, it annoys me that this book is so bad. I have not been able to get into this new Nightwing book because again DC is trying to make him “Batman Lite” instead of focusing on the character’s strengths. I’m afraid that like the plot within the book, the book itself will disappear from my monthly reading list.

Nightwing #6 gets a score of:

1.5 out of 5

Wonder Woman #6

5 Word Review: Chess Match Against The Gods
Story: Brian Azzarello
Art: Cliff Chiang

At first glance this book looks like a lot of words and little action, where in reality it is so much more that than. Wile Wonder Woman isn’t punching everything in sight, she does punch through a couple creatures, or saving large groups of people like other super heroes do, she is playing a dangerous chess match. If you are like me and enjoy a good game of chess, you will understand that even though each move may look rather boring watching the pieces fall into place just as you planned is quite exciting. This new take on Wonder Woman gives her the strength of Superman but she chooses to use the strategy skills of Batman to pit all of the other gods against Hera. Now if chess isn’t your thing or something you don’t consider an exciting read, then just wait for the grand finale. I can only imagine that Wonder Woman will got to fisticuffs with a plethora of Greek gods.

Wonder Woman #6 gets a score of:

The War, also known as Marvin Hagler vs. Thomas Hearns or Hagler-Hearns, was a world middleweight championship boxing match between Undisputed Champion Marvin Hagler and challenger Thomas Hearns, who was himself the world’s junior middleweight champion.

The fight is considered by many to be among the finest boxing matches in history, due to its constant action, drama, and back-and-forth exchanges. The bout took place on April 15, 1985.”

Recently I have been listening to my original hip-hop cassettes from the 80′s and early 90′s on my boombox. There is nothing like listening to older music on the original media it was recorded on. Anyway, while listening to these classics I started to wonder what happened to the whole hip hop culture that was associated with the music. DJ’s still somewhat exist as does graffiti, but neither is as prevalent as it used to be or currently associated with modern rap. While turntables and graffiti are still around, break dancing is almost extinct.

I know there are still b-boys (break dancers) out there, but like DJ’s and taggers it’s not the same. It seems as if break dancing can only be found now during the halftime show at an NBA game. I remember when people would lay down cardboard on street corners, parks, or anywhere else and bust a move or two. I miss break dancing and so does the Booger.

Check out this week’s comic strip to see the Booger’s take on why this form of dancing is now a lost art. (I’ll give you a hint – he thinks the government had something to do with it) Check out this week’s comic strip here: http://www.spacebooger.com/spacebooger-comic-strip/?comicID=239

I did decided that the title track "SWASS" would be my official 2012 valentine's day song. Read this post to find out why.

Four years before he became famous for rapping about big butts, Seattle’s first rapper was spitting game on his 1988 album SWASS.

Tonight Sir Mix-A-Lot’s “SWASS” was playing in my cassette deck while I was lifting tonight. While the album is awesome, it was not the best choice to listen to while lifting.

While lifting, I did decide that the title track “SWASS” would be my official 2012 valentine’s day song.
Here are some examples of why:

You can fold my robe, if you be my freak”
“Bicep’s flex, so kiss my neck. Buying pounds of gold with royalty checks”
“Yep, my phone be ringin like you wish yours would. But my girl stays cool cause she looks so good”
“I’m a freak and I know it, so why not show it. I design my rhymes like a worldwide poet”

SWASS stands for “Some Wierd A$$ Silly S&!t” and the song isn’t supposed to be taken seriously – just like Valentine’s Day*.
Nuff Said.

Bonus:

A google map of the places in Sir Mix-A-Lot’s “Posse on Broadway” song: http://t.co/BQm5Jtfk

*The “keep me from dying at the hands of my wife” disclaimer: If you love
someone you should let them know everyday not just on Feb. 14th.

5 Word Review: Lives Up to Batman’s Legacy
Story: Gail Simone
Art: Ardian Syaf & Vincente Cifuentes

The first Batgirl story arc reintroduced us to a classic character and the world around her. In that story we saw the strengths and weaknesses that Barbra Gordon posses both physically and mentally. Issue six concluded the second story, which only lasted two issues, and was everything I could ask from a Batman related comic book. Batgirl escaped the dangerous cliffhanger from the last issue, she did a little detective work to figure out the villain’s backstory and motive, and lastly she used the information she gathered to defeat the villain. While the detective work and the “brains over brawn” take down of the villain were awesome, the supporting cast is what makes this book stand out. The relationship Batgirl and Batman have may be complex, but there is enough closure presented in this issue that it doens’t effect every story. The ongoing drama between Batgirl and the GPD, with her connection to the commissioner, is a strong enough sub-story to carry the book in case the main plot ever falls short.

While Batgirl will never be considered one of DC’s “Big Three” this book is embodies everything a great comic book should.

5 Word Review: Will This Storyline Ever End?
Story: Peter Tomasi
Art: Patrick Gleason & Mick Gray

I would love to say that the surprise ending of this issue and story caught me off guard but it didn’t. Since the relaunch, this book has been filled with teen drama revolving around “daddy” issues. At the conclusion of this issue, us readers learn that even though Damian isn’t fond of his father’s methods he does in fact respect him and when given the choice he will do the right thing.

Now that it is established that Damian’s conscience will override his training as an assassin, I’m looking forward to the next issue where Batman says “Sorry for being an overprotective father,” and Damian says “Sorry for being all emo like,” then together they swing off to fight the scum of Gotham.

Batman and Robin #6 gets a score of:

5 Word Review: Prophecies… Aw Man. Not Again.
Story: Geoff Johns
Art: Mike Choi

This book has everything that the last Green Lantern series had that turned me off and scared me away from the anything lantern realated. I liked the simplicity of this reboot and it’s focus on two man characters who would alternate between allies and enemies. This issue marks the return of the deep dark gloomy prophecies along with the integration of other colored lanterns. As a single issue this book was pretty good, but the underlining big picture ruined it.

If this book is what I fear it to be and becomes larger than a hero’s self titled book should be, then I will be abandoning this book again.

Green Lantern #6 gets a score of:

5 Word Review: Guest Appearance That Doesn’t Suck
Story: Scott Lobdell & Tom Defalco
Art: R.B. Silva & Rob Lean

Normally I don’t like books that fester too long on one topic or feature guest stars that are not important to the current plot, but this book was different. Superboy just finished taking down the Teen Titans and their pleas and logic regarding his creators was beginning to sink in. Between being confused as to why he was created and being lied to from birth, Superboy meets Supergirl and becomes even more confused. Both of the teenage Super-Kids are new to Earth and confused by the culture and more importantly their past. When the two touch, Superboy learns about Krypton and it’s destruction and Supergirl realizes that he is a clone. In this new DCU Krypton’s downfall had something to do with clones and the house of El. Upon learning that Superboy is a clone, she calls him Kon-El and unleashes every ounce of penned up anger on him. Like any good team-up book the fighting eventually ends and the two talk it out. The issue ended with both teen heroes having more questions than answers.

If you look at the big picture, a lot of the new Superman legend is revealed in this issue. Not only is a lot of the Superman/Krypton backstory given, each member that wears the “S” on their chest is disticntly different instead of younger versions of Superman. This issue added a lot of character to two kids who manytimes get called “Superman lite” that wears a t-shirt or a skirt. I have to give Scott Lobell credit, his work in DC’s New 52 has been superb.
