To combat
> this problem, NASA scientists spent a decade and $12
> billion developing a
> pen that writes in zero gravity, upside down,
> underwater, on almost any
> surface including glass and at temperatures ranging
> from below freezing
> to over 300C.
>
>
> The Russians used a pencil.
>

Thanks for writing. That's a funny joke, heard it many times and I even use a spacepen myself. Unfortunately I dicovered in my research that it's not true. First, it was a private commercial venture, NASA scientists never touched it nor was government money used, second, these pens have been on every American AND Russian manned spaceflight. Sorry to burst the bubble, I used to love telling that story too.
sincerely,
The Space Painter

Wednesday, January 09, 2002

McSweeney's Internet Tendency: Black, Gray, Green, Red, Blue: A Letter From a Famous Painter on the Moon

--- David Willems
> I hope this guy isn't moving in on your territory:
>
> http://www.mcsweeneys.net/2002/01/07letter.html
>
>

Thank you for the email David. I enjoyed the story [McSweeney's Painter] and assure you that I have no claim on this territory. When a large scale project such as the Space Painter Project takes place and has such cultural relevance it will no doubt have a big effect on popular culture. I thoroughly enjoy seeing my project mutate and influence other media such as fictional literature.
Thank you,
Chris Ramey
The Space Painter
chris@spacepaint.com

Monday, November 12, 2001

Hi’ya Everybody,

Just wanted to drop a line, have some news from the Space Painter-Chris Ramey…

1: NYC Exhibition Announcement
2: Website Re-launch: http://www.spacepaint.com

WESTSIDE GALLERY
141 WEST 21 STREET, NYC
November 15 – December 8, 2001

RECEPTION: Tuesday, November 20, 5-7PM
Video, Drinks, plus a special appearance by the Space Painter, first artist in space.

This exhibition will give an overview of Space Painter-Chris Ramey’s mission to space aboard the space shuttle with the intent to bring back a body of artworks. Art has been reflecting glass for humanity.
We all dream of space and weightlessness was like a dream. An outpouring onto the canvas in a zero gravity environment allowed a free flow between the painter and the canvas. This allowed me to be the first painter in history to achieve truth in painting.
Tuesday, July 31, 2001

YESTERDAY WAS MY BIRTHDAY!!!
YESTERDAY WAS NASA's BIRTHDAY!!!
WOH-hooo!
Friday, July 13, 2001

"I can't understand why people are frightened of new ideas. I find a lot of anti-gravity interest in dance. It makes a lot of sence, I guess, since they deal with gravity in a way that's as direct as me the artist.

I've heard rumors of an Orbital Illustrator, but just remember . . . There is only one SPACEPAINTER!!!
