For reasons beyond our control, SNB posts have been very few and far between recently - apologies for that. We-ll be aiming at one post a week for the next few weeks! (BTW, thanks to everyone who's emailed asking us where we were - I'll reply to you all!) Today's post focuses on an increasingly significant (presumably because money-spinning) literary phenomenon - the posthumous publication of work by great writers, and a few examples we can look forward to. This late work may not always be up to the writers' finest standard, but it's always welcome. Enjoy!

Benedetti Es verdad que las obras inéditas no suelen ser ni las más pulidas ni las más originales de los escritores. Entradas de diario, correspondencia personal, papeles dispersos... Pero también es verdad que, para los fieles, un nuevo libro de su escritor favorito es un regalo inesperado.

Un día después de la muerte de Mario Benedetti, sus lectores, que son muchos, desayunaron con una noticia que serenaba la pérdida: dos obras del escritor uruguayo, un libro de poemas y otro de textos breves, serían publicados póstumamente.

El primero será publicado en septiembre de 2009; para el segundo, aún no hay fecha. Pero lo importante es que, gracias al empeño de las editoriales, el goteo de obras inéditas proporciona cada poco tiempo un nuevo y feliz reencuentro con los autores fallecidos.

Cortazar Por ejemplo, un volumen con textos inéditos de Julio Cortázar saldrá en mayo al mercado editado por Alfaguara. Mientras tanto, al fallecido Roberto Bolaño le crecen los inéditos casi al mismo ritmo que los admiradores. A 2666 y El secreto del mal, publicados hace unos años por Anagrama, se le unen ahora tres nuevas novelas. Una de ellas, El Tercer Reich, se publicará en 2010.

Además el escritor británico de ciencia ficción J.G. Ballard falleció recientemente dejando inédita una obra en la que reflexiona sobre el cáncer de páncreas que lo mató. El libro se llama Conversaciones con mi médico, pero aún no hay fecha para su publicación.

Sevilla1 Welcome to April! Of all the places to be in the spring, Seville must be one of the finest, as the many visitors who flock to it from all over the world can testify. For most of the month of April, it seems, the city gives itself over to two great fiestas - the Semana Santa, or Holy Week festivities, and then the Feria de Abril - the April Fair. But don't despair if you can't make it this year, because a new initiative  means you can get it all on your computer. Lots of typical Spanish phrases today. Enjoy!

Llega el mes de abril. Si vas a visitar España, no hay duda, no hay lugar como Sevilla para dar la bienvenida a la primavera: buen clima, tapas exquisitas, dos de las fiestas más importantes del mundo y el olor a azahar de los naranjos de la ciudad. Pero no te preocupes si no puedes. Sevilla es la primera ciudad 2.0. Mediante este nuevo programa de su Ayuntamiento ya puedes acceder fácilmente a todo lo que ocurre allí: comentarios, itinerarios, vídeos, visitas virtuales, noticias de televisión... Todo menos las tapas y el olor.

Seville2 En el blog Visita Sevilla, con versión también en inglés, puedes encontrar información interesante de la ciudad más allá de los tradicionales contenidos turísticos. También es posible seguir todos los comentarios sobre ella en sus páginas específicas en Facebook y Twitter. Las mejores fotos están en Flickr. Si quieres dar el clásico paseo en autobús por su zona monumental, puedes hacerlo en uno de los vídeos de la página de Sevilla en You Tube. Allí también encontrarás imágenes de la Semana Santa, una fiesta que une en la ciudad el espectáculo, la cultura y la religión. El canal de televisión online Turismo Sevilla TV ofrece pequeños documentales sobre la ciudad muy interesantes. Muchos de ellos tienen subtítulos en inglés. No podía ser de otra manera, nos quedamos con su invitación a la Feria de Abril, la fiesta más estética del país: espectaculares coches de caballo, vestidos sensuales, música para el baile. Lo dicho, está todo menos el olor de las calles, el sabor de las tapas y la alegría de los sevillanos cuando llega el mes de abril.

También hemos visto a Obama como <strong><span title="America's bride">novia de América</span></strong> y a Fidel Castro <strong><span title="shooting">"disparando" a</span></strong> Cristóbal Colón. Atlas I've always been fascinated by old newspapers. They tell us more about what lived history was like than any number of history books. Today, Spanish NewsBites reports on a new initiative which brings much of that newspaper history into our own homes. Meanwhile, we present a pioneering 'Chronological Atlas' which provides a history of Spain from its origins until now in well-written, bite-sized pieces - a bit like those you're about to read, in fact. Every self-respecting Spanish-language library should have one of these 'atlases' - though, let's be honest, it doesn't come cheap. Enjoy!

Pensatriz ¿De qué hablaban las primeras publicaciones femeninas en España? De cuánto suda la cabeza bajo la peluca, de la dificultad de colocar el sombrero y las joyas sobre la cabeza, de los abánicos... Es La Pensatriz Salmantina, día 16 de marzo de 1777, la publicación más antigua que podemos consultar en la nueva Biblioteca Virtual de Prensa Histórica, presentada esta semana por el Ministerio de Cultura español. Será un lujo gratuito para curiosos e investigadores, que podrán ver más de 2.000 publicaciones y cuatro millones y medio de páginas en las pantallas de sus ordenadores. La historia de España entra así en la Red a través de sus periódicos desde finales del siglo XVIII hasta 2005.

Más historia. Por 95 euros ya se puede comprar el nuevo Atlas Cronológico de la Historia de España, publicado por la Real Academia de la Historia. Se trata de un libro de grandes dimensiones, donde aparecen los 14.000 hechos históricos más importantes de la historia española, desde la prehistoria hasta 2008. Pero lo más interesante estará en la Red. Cada libro tiene una tarjeta exclusiva con claves para acceder a sus contenidos, que se actualizarán continuamente según las nuevas investigaciones. Una Wikipedia especializada, erudita y visualmente muy atractiva.

Today, two major Spanish-language publishing initiatives. The crisis may have led to the closure of two of New York's Spanish-language bookstores, but don't worry - Spanish will find its way into our homes via other routes, as an exciting new project by one major publisher proves. Meanwhile, a major new transnational dictionary is being prepared which will show us that, though the original home of the language of Cervantes is naturally enough Spain, more and more of it is coming out of Latin America. A must-read for anyone serious about the language. Happy reading!

GabrielGarciaMarquez Primero fue el premio Pulitzer al dominicano Junot Díaz, después el fenómeno de ventas de la novela 2666, de Roberto Bolaño, recomendada incluso por Oprah Winfrey en su programa y su revista. Tras el cierre de Macondo y Lectorum, las dos librerías de español clásicas de Nueva York, el futuro parecía oscuro para sus lectores. Pero el español empuja con fuerza en Estados Unidos. Cada año se venden más de 100.000 ejemplares de las obras de Gabriel García Márquez (left) en su lengua. La demanda crece y lo hará más en el futuro. A pesar de la crisis del sector, Random House, una de las grandes editoriales norteamericanas, ve el negocio. Su reciente asociación con la española Vintage Español creará cada año 65 nuevos títulos en la lengua de Cervantes para su venta en los Estados Unidos. Federico García Lorca o Pablo Neruda son algunos de sus primeros autores.

Tomato "Chocolate", "patata", "tomate"... Son americanismos conocidos por todos, pero hay muchos más. ¡Entre 90.000 y 100.000! En ellos trabajan en esta semana en Sevilla los expertos de todas las academias de las lenguas de España y Latinoamérica. Será el futuro Diccionario de Americanismos, un proyecto que la Real Academia Española tiene desde el siglo XIX. Se presentará en marzo de 2010 en la ciudad chilena de Valparaíso, durante el V Congreso Internacional de la Lengua.

Felicidades. Han sido 50 años, 50 ediciones donde ha habido luces y sombras. Gracias, sobre todo, a la difusión en directo de las televisiones, el Festival de Viña de Mar, en Chile, es hoy el acontecimiento musical más importante de Latinoamérica. Mucho más que las canciones del concurso, las actuaciones de las grandes estrellas son el plato fuerte y la clave del éxito mediático del Festival.

Carlos-santana En la edición de este año, clausurada el pasado 28 de febrero, Argentina ha sido el país ganador con la canción "Ayer te vi", de Emiliano del Río. Pero la imagen del día fueron las lágrimas de emoción de Marc Anthony en el concierto final. Hubo de todo: el pop de los británicos Simply Red, las canciones clásicas del español Joan Manuel Serrat, el guitarrista Carlos Santana y el compromiso del colombiano Juanes. Nos quedamos con su "A Dios le pido". (The singing starts at 1:21.)

In other words, we've learned a lot of Spanish, and at the same time we've learned a lot about what's happening right now in Spain and Latin America.
