<itunes:summary>Epilepsy affects more than 3 million Americans making it more common than Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis and cerebral palsy combined. Yet myths and misunderstandings continue to surround the condition. Tune in to the Epilepsy Empowerment podcast series to hear Epilepsy Foundation President and CEO, Eric Hargis, as he moderates a Roundtable discussion with some of the community's leading advocates. The Roundtable was prompted by a national survey uncovering key challenges facing the epilepsy community including gaps in patient-physician communication and low public awareness of epilepsy. Panelists developed recommendations for eliminating epilepsy associated stigma, improving the standard of care for people with epilepsy and engaging in effective communication with healthcare professionals. The Roundtable was hosted by the Epilepsy Foundation with financial support from Ortho-McNeil Neurologics, Division of Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Roundtable panelists included leading epileptologists David Labiner, Mark Spitz and Georgia Montouris; star of NBC's hit television series 'Heroes,' and father of son with epilepsy, Greg Grunberg; New York Giants defensive back Geoffrey Pope whose grandmother has epilepsy; Carly Richards, a 14-year-old girl with epilepsy, and her mother, Kelly Richards; high school student and soccer player with epilepsy, 17-year old Caitlin Purcell.</itunes:summary>
