From, "Wow, that's so great that you are doing that"! to "Are you sure you really want to do that?"

Several weeks ago, David Douglas, HS Principal at Prince Ave, sent out an email requesting a host home for a Chinese student who is to start at PACS in the second semester. Lisa and I prayed about it and talked it over with the kids. It was a go!

Our two primary reasons? One, because we made a commitment to the Chinese that we would teach Elisabeth Chinese culture. What better way than to have someone from China to live with us. And two, to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Today, I took Jason (that's his English name) to the school to get his class schedule, meet teachers and practice with the boys varsity basketball team. One of the classes Jason is required to take at PACS is Bible.

We met Jason's Bible teacher, Coach Billy Meeks. Coach Meeks was telling Jason about the class and the Book that is used. At a still small moment pause in the conversation Jason was having with Coach Meeks, Jason spoke up... "I know nothing about God." My heart was filled with compassion and I began immediately to pray for Coach Meeks and the classmates in Jason's class.

You want to know why we are hosting an exchange student...the Gospel! And my three kids, my church and our school have a front row seat on seeing a life that will be transformed not because of anything we have done, but because of the power of the Gospel! NOT ASHAMED!

Manipulation is not appreciated either!

Here's the deal... People want to give to vision. They don't want to pay for someone else's debt. Most people I know want to give to something that is purposeful, has movement and is bigger themselves!

Here are FIVE reasons why should pastors talk about money?
1. It is a great opportunity to cast vision! Capital always follows vision! Vision leaks so cast it regularly...every four to six weeks.
2. The manner in which people handle their money is more than just financial, it is spiritual. Teach & Model stewardship!
3. It's all God's anyway and His Word is loaded with verses on money!
4. It's an opportunity for prayer! If God owns the cattle on a thousand hills, gather your flock together and ask God (your Heavenly Father & Rancher) to sell a few cattle!
5. It is an opportunity to disciple people about money management; to teach them how to give, spend and save, and how God & Grandma's play an important role in financial health!

NOTE: there are three, no four, reasons people have a problem with pastors talking about money: (1) they've been burned by an egotistical and manipulative pastor, (2) they probably aren't tithing, (3) they have a tight grip on what they think is their money and (4) they hate capital campaigns!

There was no note or indication of who or where it came from. To be honest, my first thought was someone knew my desire to have an iPad and gave their money anonymously for me to get what I wanted. But, that thought quickly left and I began to ask around to our staff what they knew.

Come to find out, a teenager in our church who has recently gone through some very trying times herself, gave every penny she had been saving throughout 2011 and gave it to our church's annual Christmas offering which will support our community and start new churches around the world!

That is generosity. Merry Christmas!
Hurt, however, can manifest itself in different forms. Pain, frustration, emptiness, gloom, despair, agony to name a few. But there is a hurt that sends a message of compassion, concern and love: empathy.

Empathy is more than sympathy. Sympathy says, "I'm sorry for your loss!" Empathy says, "I feel your pain, I hurt with you, I've been there and I'm with you as you go through this!"

HA!

While children are a blessing from the Lord, and I would lay my life down at ANYTIME for all three of my kids, I can not truthfully say that raising a teenager is "fun".

Challenging? Yes!
Frustrating? Yes!
Difficult? Yes!
Proud moments? Yes!
Impossible? No...but it certainly feels like it sometimes.
Fun? Not yet!

So, God, how would You parent my teenager?
Answer: "Much like I parent You!"

With Patience
God is patient with us and desires for no one to perish but for all to have eternal life (2 Pe 3:9). Children need PATIENCE from parents. Do not be quick tempered (although this is easier said than done). "In your anger, do not sin (Eph. 4:26)."

With Silence
God turns his back on sin like He did with Christ on the cross. Many times, our prayers are hindered because of sin in our own lives. Therefore, it is important to agree with God about your sin. While God's love for us never changes, his hatred towards sin never changes either! Because of His holy character, it is impossible for Him to condone our selfish and proud behavior. Therefore, He pursues His children by silently and patiently waiting on the heart to break. At which time, He is there to comfort us and unload His love on us! A broken and contrite spirit is an acceptable sacrifice to God and is what He is waiting on (Ps 51:17). In parenting, there is a lot of wisdom in silence and waiting.

Through Hardships
God doesn't create the hardship...we do! But God, in His wisdom, treats us as sons by using hardship as discipline (to teach us). He is not treating us as illegitimate children. He is treating us as His own...adopted and grafted into His family! (Heb 12:7) Parents, your children WILL experience hardship! Most of the time it will be self-inflicted. Don't berate them or shame them! Just use it as a teachable moment in their life. More importantly, use it as a teachable moment in yours. Never stop learning and never stop teaching!

With Sacrifice
God gave up His most treasured relationship so that we could experience the gift of eternal life. Raising kids requires great sacrifice, discipline and spiritual maturity! Love is the great motivator!

With Grace
"Love covers a multitude of sin." (Prov 10:12, 17:9 & 1 Pe 4:8)

We are saved by Grace! (Eph 2:5-10) Maybe GRACE should be Lisa's new name!

God's compassions are new every morning! (Lam. 3:22-23) Every morning begins a new day! A clean slate! A new beginning! While we may still have to be silent, patient, gracious, and sacrificial, God's mercies are NEW every morning towards US. Therefore, dispense that same compassion on your kids as well.

Lisa grew up going to Prince Ave Baptist Church as a child and teenager and even went to PACS for a period of time. Today, our three kids attend Prince Ave and Lisa is a 3rd Grade Math, English and Bible teacher.

If you haven't heard, the PACS Football team is in the Final Four of the State Playoffs for the Single A division. PACS won the Team of the Week from Fox 5 and was all over the news on Good Day Atlanta! I have posted FOX 5 videos on my blog or you can click here for a slide show.
At the same time, we are reading through the "Prayer" Bible reading plan available through www.youversion.com.

In the challenge this morning, Chip asked to list ten things we are thankful for. I did this on Thanksgiving Day and thought I would repost:

(I have twelve)
1.My relationship with Jesus!
2. My wife Lisa!
3. My kids!
4. My future! I have a hope!
5. My parents! Grammy & Pop
6. My brother & his family! (West, Suzanne, Abby & Ben)
7. Mimi & Pawpaw!
8. Aunt Christy and M.L. (and baby Nel...I can't wait until you are born and I get to be your uncle!
9. River Hills Church! What a great church to serve and be a part of!
10. Prince Ave Christian School! Go Wolverines!
11. Friends! Duke's, Sauls', Ragle's... You guys are the best! We love you!
12. Chickfila, Jittery Joe's, & Starbucks. I couldn't leave these out!

This was a great article by Chuck Bentley, CEO of Crown Financial Ministries. Read his comments about the financial problems we are facing as a nation.

Til Debt Do Us Part

It has been said that the best way to please everyone is to believe nothing, say nothing and do nothing. Since launching this column, I have certainly succeeded in not pleasing everyone!

Last week an article of mine was featured in The Washington Times, one of the few major daily newspapers that takes a conservative view of the political world. You may want to see the article here. It was subsequently reposted at FoxNation.com.

On the day it was published, it ranked as one of the most read articles on The Washington Times website. While I cringed at the editor’s choice of “BENTLEY: Don’t Feed the Lazy,” for a title, I was pleased that the Bible verse I cited, 2 Thessalonians 3:10, was included. Needless to say, the polarized responses to the article indicate a significant national divide.

As Christians, we need to take an ardent stand for our economic freedom that was granted to us by God’s grace and kindness. If we stand passively on the sidelines trying to please everyone, I believe we will become enslaved without a shot ever being fired on our soil.

A primary area where our policies are deviating from biblical truth is in the management of our national debt. Let’s take a look at a simplified analysis of the financial problems we currently face in the U.S.:

U.S. tax revenue: $ 2.15 trillion1

Federal budget: $ 3.8 trillion2

New debt: $ 1.65 trillion3

National debt: $ 15 trillion4

Recent budget cut: $ 38 billion5

Now let's remove some zeros and pretend it’s your budget…

Your annual income: $ 21,500

Your household spending: $ 38,000

New debt this year: $ 16,500

Your credit card debt: $ 150,000

Recent budget cut: $ 385

In a household budget, whenever unsecured debt approaches a 1 to 1 ratio with annual income, the borrower is in serious trouble. When this ratio reaches a 2 to 1 level the problem intensifies to out-of-control trouble. If you are somehow able to borrow to a 7 to 1 ratio, the problem becomes a runaway crisis. It screams for immediate action to reverse the trend.

The Federal Government has become the caretaker of first and last resort. This philosophy is simply unsustainable. Our deviation from God’s principles is rapidly becoming our downfall.

So our elected officials have now recognized that a 7 to 1 ratio is unsustainable. Thus, we have a special deficit-reduction “Super Committee,” charged with cutting at least $1.2 trillion in government red ink over the coming decade. Note: This is not to reduce the $15 trillion in existing debt, but only an attempt to reduce deficit spending each year!

Even with these hoped for cuts, we’ll still be trillions of dollars more in the hole by 2021.

Does it sound like anyone on that committee is aware of Proverbs 22:7: "The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender”?

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that the Super Committee can find no common ground for agreement. Just as European leaders find themselves unable to reach a meaningful solution to their problems while teetering on the verge of insolvency—so does America.

This political gridlock has divided the nation into two camps—one wants to tax the rich to close the deficit gap while the other would be satisfied to simply reduce our deficit spending. Neither side, it seems, is willing to admit that we are standing on the edge of a cliff, looking into an abyss of debt.

Rancorous partisan fighting among lawmakers in Washington continues to produce more confusion than solutions. Perhaps they should consult the wisdom of the Old Testament for clarity:

“If you fully obey the Lord your God…you will lend to many nations but will borrow from none. The Lord will make you the head, not the tail…you will always be at the top, never the bottom….However, if you do not obey the Lord your God… The alien who lives among you will rise above you higher and higher, but you will sink lower and lower. He will lend to you, but you will not lend to him. He will be the head, but you will be the tail.” 6

When our national budget reflected our obedience to God’s ways, we were the largest lending nation in the world. Tragically, we have given up our once high position as the “head” to become the “tail” –the largest debtor nation in the history of the world.

Debt has divided us. Only a return to God and His principles will unite us again and move us from being the tail back to being the head.

I pray you will stand with us as we seek to influence our nation back to honoring God in all our ways and to protect our priceless freedoms.

We were home in Georgia for a quiet Thanksgiving weekend, except for a surprise $1400 expense to remove roots from our septic system! Thank goodness for emergency savings!

We are getting ready for all of our children (and grandson!) to gather for Christmas, including my son who will be on leave from combat duty in Afghanistan.

Did you participate in this year’s “Black & Blue Friday” madness? My next post will address the rise of “competitive shopping” and how this sickness afflicts our nation.

Verbal and Non-verbal. What we do for others communicates how much we love and appreciate them.

It's no different with God. What we do with our time, money, the Gospel, the poor, the church, the Bible, and our relationships, communicates how much we love God and adore Him.

If you are doing "all the right things" for God, but do not love Him, you are intoxicated with religion and are ensnared by your own self-righteousness.

However, if your love for God motivates you to honor Him with your life, you have been set free from religion and are in a relationship that thrives on faith and the powerful language of prayer.

"So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened." (Luke 11:9, 10 NIV)
Between my email inbox, mail and ads on TV, I have seen thousands of items marketed for "Black Friday". As one who loves to shop for gifts (and get them too), there is an angst in the pit of my stomach that has left me feeling BLUE about BLACK FRIDAY.

So...here's my cure for the blues: Shop for Gifts that have Purpose. Here are some ideas for you to consider:

TOMS Shoes - For every pair of shoes you purchase, TOMS will give a pair of shoes to a child in need.

ShowHope - this is a movement to care for orphans. Lisa and I were recipients of a grant when we adopted Elisabeth in 2006. ShowHope has an online store where you can "purchase with a purpose". They have items for men, women and kids. Click here to shop.

Land of a Thousand Hills - Drink Coffee. Do Good. Originally designed to help Rwandans recover from the 1994 civil war and genocide, Land of a Thousand Hills purpose is to (FROM THEIR WEB) "...partner with farmers and local community leaders to develop the
coffee into a sustainable income, pay a just Living Wage, and strive to
further meet the needs of the people. When you buy Land of a Thousand
Hills, you are receiving coffee that is 100% Arabica, fairly traded, and
roasted fresh. Your excellent morning cup is offering hope to these
developing coffee communities with each purchase."

Small Things with a Big Impact (75 Seconds) from Land of a Thousand Hills Coffee on Vimeo.

WorldVision - their purpose is to be "a Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to working with children, families and their communities...to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice. WorldVision has an online store through which you can "purchase" items by making a donation. Your donation can do anything from building a school to supplying medicine to purchasing a goat.

Kourage Athletics - I've got to give some props to fellow UGA alum Chris Markl (MA '03). Chris founded the non-profit organization Kourage Athletics, which is a running apparel manufacturing company. The goal of the company is to use sound business practices to improve the lives of impoverished Kenyans. The clothing (shown online) is limited to some really cool quick-dry shirts. But I am sure as this organization grows so will their product line.

Asher Bracelets - 100% of the proceeds from the sale of Asher Bracelets go towards providing surgeries for babies in Uganda. Due to the volume of orders, Asher Bracelets cannot promise delivery by Christmas. However, there are gift certificates available you can purchase for stocking stuffers. Email Kelley Berry or visit her on Facebook.

I know there are great musicians and song writers in the world today, but I have no idea who they are. I am so glad there are people in my life (like West Breedlove & Elissa Ewald) that can help me and I saw the following video come through my inbox today from ChurchLeaders.com and wanted to share it.

Shot on Hollywood Boulevard, with other videos filmed all over the country, John Mark McMillan's "Daylight" is a reminder that God meets us where we are, and there is always hope. McMillan says,
"For me, the greatest days—the birth of a child, the success of a career—have always been coupled with the worst ones—the death of a loved one, a friends' divorce... It's a tension we all live in." www.thejohnmark.com
Achieving both, while difficult and often times messy, will lead to church growth and a healthy, vibrant church.

Small group ministry is difficult to lead. It's like gardening. Till the soil (marketing and invitations)... Plant the seed (Small Group Kickoff)... Water the seed (emails, training videos, encouraging letters, assimilation)... Spray for insects (aka Group Killers)... Pull the weeds (the complainers)... WAIT (silence)... Wait some more (more silence)... Watch for blooms (ahhhhh…life! Cool stories!)... Wait for the fruit (it's like watching a pot that never boils)... Some plants never take root and/or die (so far, I've had to merge 3 of my groups to become 1)... Harvest (groups produce and multiply into other groups… this is vitality!).

The difficulty in small groups is our own impatience. In the quick service world we live in, we expect small groups to produce fruit immediately. It's not going to happen. Small groups are going to die. You are going to get frustrated. People are going to "commit" to a group and never show up. People's schedules are going to get in the way of coming to small group. You are going to have to merge groups together so that those who want to be in a group can still come. Leaders are going to leave. Some small groups are going to be two couples when there should be ten. Personal situations are going to intrude on your small groups. There will ALWAYS be something to gripe about when it comest to small groups.

We must understand that small groups will have different personalities; not just because of life stages, but because of leadership. These groups will create a mosaic garden for people to walk into and find life! It is in this principle that we can find great encouragement and be patient with our small group(s).

While my list is certainly not exhaustive, here are a few things I've come to understand about healthy small groups:

 1. Food is always involved! One is for the body and the other is for the soul. They always make sure there is something to eat AND are ready to talk about the Bible!
 2. They genuinely care about others in the group and would do anything for others in the group.
 3. They are free of gossip about church leaders and others in their group.
 4. They are open to receiving new people in their group.
 5. They pray together.
 6. They serve together.
 7. They genuinely enjoy being together.
 8. For the individuals in the group… small group is a priority in their lives.
 9. They reproduce.
10. EVERYTHING rises and falls on leadership!

God says so! “Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me. But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’ In tithes and offerings (Malachi 3:8)."

Our finances typically identify the location of our spiritual journey! Did you know that over a 40 year span, the historical average of what people "tithe" in evangelical churches is between 2% and 3% of their income. If the tithe is 10% and is the Lord's and is Holy (Lev. 27:30), then most people are robbing God! Not cool!

In his book, "Money Talks: But what is it really saying", O. S. Hawkins writes:
"The tithe is the Lord's (Lev. 27:30)!" This should open our eyes to a misconception that has blinded many from the truth of Scripture that one-tenth of our income is not our own personal property at all. It does not belong to us. We have no say about it whatsoever. Regardless of what we have done with it, the tithe is the Lord's. God's tithe may be on your back in the form of a new suit of clothes. It may be in your home in the form of a new video game... You may be watching the Lords' tithe each evening on a big screen television set in your den. You may be driving the Lord's tithe down the street in the form of a new car. You may be investing the Lord's tithe in a bank... You may be stealing it, robbing it, driving it, wearing it, investing it... but it is still not yours... the tithe is the Lord's! It belongs to God, and in reality we do not give anything to Him until we give over the tithe."

What To Do? STOP ROBBING GOD and TRUST HIM! "We are no farther along in our walk with God than the point where we have learned to trust Him with our tithe." O.S. Hawkins

PROVERBS 3:9-10 says, "Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine."

MALACHI 3:10-11 says, "Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my
house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not
throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that
there will not be room enough to store it. I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your
fields will not drop their fruit before it is ripe,” says the LORD
Almighty.
