Actually, since the new challenges went live this afternoon, I’m just 1 of about 1271 geocachers who have accepted and completed the Kiss a Frog challenge. I expect those numbers to keep increasing as the first day novelty factor has many early adapters tuning in to see what all the buzz is about. While both of these were fun challenges to test the waters with, I don’t really think either of these are very worthy challenges as neither are about location. After all, location is one of the very defining factors of geocaching. Then again, I must not be totally alone in this thought because at the time of this posting the Tweet Your Twitters challenge has been archived and is no longer available. That was sure short lived.

In any case, my hope is that in time the quality of challenges being created will improve. I’d like to see more of them bring me to a location and not just something that I can do from my desk. Oh, and let’s hope more will last a little bit longer than two hours.

For the last week or two, the geocaching circles have been all a buzz about Geocaching.com’s Geocaching Challenges. From blogs to podcasts, one can’t seem to escape the media blitz. It certainly has feed my interest in this new “cache” type. In fact, just the other day, between an article posted on Latitude 47 and an interview that the Podcacher Podcast had with Jeremy Irish and Bryan Roth of Groundspeak, I would say the geocaching community finally received a good overview of Geocaching Challenges. I thought both outlined, very well, all the trials and tribulations of finding just the right “replacement” for virtual caches and how the Geocaching Challenges will work. All in all, it appears that Groundspeak has put a lot of thought into this next addition to the game.

I’m very excited about Challenges, and look forward to seeing what the community can do with the new concept. So, what are your thoughts on the new Geocaching Challenges?
