Through some magic you don't fully understand, you're still breathing and your heart is beating, even though you've been unconscious for many hours. The air is a mix of gases that's just right for your body's needs, as it was before you fell asleep.

You can see! Light of many colors floods into your eyes, registered by nerves that took God or evolution or some process millions of years to perfect. The interesting gift of these vivid hues is made possible by an unimaginably immense globe of fire, the sun, which continually detonates nuclear reactions in order to convert its own body into light and heat and energy for your personal use.

You can't live without the sun's inexhaustible flood of unconditional love. Every move you make depends on it. Luckily, it never fails you.

Did you know that your personal star is located at the precise distance from you to be of consummate service? If it were any closer, you'd fry, and if it were any farther away, you'd freeze. Is that just a happy accident? Or is it a sign of favor-a big, broad hint, from a cosmic intelligence that adores you?

Of the many things that have gone right for you during your time on Earth, the most crucial was your birth. As you crossed over the threshold, trading the warm dark sanctuary for the bright noisy enigma, you didn't die! It was a difficult act of high magic that involved many people who worked very hard in your behalf. The skills they provided in helping you navigate your rite of passage were in turn made possible by previous generations of threshold-tenders who bequeathed their expertise.

Months before that initiation, a more secret miracle bloomed: Your life began as a single cell, spawned by the explosive fusion of two highly specialized bundles of chromosomes. How could that tiny package of raw material have possibly grown a brain and liver and heart and stomach over a period of a few months? What inscrutable genius guided and oversaw the emergence of your fully formed infant body, that virtuoso creation, from the slimmest of clues?

"Something unknown is doing we don't know what," said astrophysicist Arthur Eddington about the universe. And we are the beneficiaries.

P.S. You have continued to grow since your birth, with millions of new cells continually blooming to replace the old ones that are always dying. At this moment, you're host to about 50 trillion cells, and each of them is really a sentient being in its own right. They all act together as a community, implementing the monumental collaboration you call your body.

Read the rest of the article here: http://www.realitysandwich.com/glory_highest_part_one

Of those they link to are a number of dark force aligned interests that are about furthering separation of humanity from True Self and The Creator of All/God/etc. and in emphasizing the primacy of the individual self.

This same evening I saw a broadcast television program that was essentially a promotional piece for a new book by a popular author named Dan Brown. His specialty is to supply adventure-mystery stories to feed public intrigue with the secrets behind secret cabals. What Brown really does is to disclose inconsequential information to a naïve public while helping to conceal the deeper and darker truths of those he purports to expose. I also was sent something about a “declaration for an integral world” that is closely aligned with a panoply of new age, new world order, eclectism that are without real spiritual connection and that promote the primacy of the individual above all else.

I mention these items here under “Truth” because what is most missing from all of the above is connection to higher spiritual existence and The Creator of All/God/etc. The recent Dan Brown book is essentially a public relations piece for “Freemasonry” and its emphasis on the freedom of the individual, etc. –one deliberately devoid of connection to Creator/God/etc. In this context of separation, there is the imperative of humans becoming gods, but devoid of any true spiritual Light. In other words, false ascension.

If the embodied forces of darkness wish to succeed, they will most likely do so by donning the mask of an eclectic “new age”, “integralism” that makes the individual self primary, along with the power of humanity to be embraced by a false oneness, under the control of dark forces. This has already been successfully used under the broad heading of a “common enemy” of global warming or climate change. This false “oneness” is also being prepared as part of a larger package that presents an “alien threat”. Whether the “alien threat” card will be played remains to be seen. This latter point is discussed further in a special essay in the concluding material to Global Awakening News titled “ET”.

From my comments to the “truth” group: …desire for the real “Truth” is good. We all can and will "really know Truth", even beyond what globally acknowledged sages such as Jesus, Buddha, etc. spoke of. Their words at the time were vectors for a higher level transmission to those around them who could pay attention in that way. Over time, those word-vectors became garbled through many interpretations and translations by humans projecting themselves over this work. High intention and high listening is one way around this difficulty.

Without spiritual wisdom, the human rational mind cannot properly discern truth from falsehood….

That which calls itself humanity is now in the early stages of "dying to death itself" and "dying to the old while still embodied".

Some refer to this as ascension and transformation. It is about experiencing "Truth and Beauty" from ones higher self perspective which in turn helps to heal the personality or ego self. From this the personality or ego-self can relax its grip on a illusory reality that is dissolving and find proper connection with True Self.

Truth is proven to each through a vast inner spiritual realization that, despite outward appearances, nearly everyone can experience. First they need to turn their intention and attention to their own higher soul being and to The Creator of All/ God/ etc. Until that happens, Truth will remain elusive and poor substitutes will continue to be proferred instead.

As it unfolds at first, it can be very disturbing to some.

There is no need for any external authorities or external proofs once this inner realization begins. External authorities, even those rare few who speak proximations of Truth, are external distractions to this process.

Humans have achieved very little by way of "verified" absolute truths. 99% of what passes as the accomplishment of this civilization is based upon the application of some basic principles and the systematic enslavement of whole peoples and planet by forces mostly unknown to most. Take any major events of global significance. Consider the events of Sept 11 2001. There are those who believe the official stories and there are those who do not. Of those who do not, there are many differences. Even if someone were to know exactly who did what and when, the bigger question remains, what does this event truly mean? If or when humans come to believe the extent to which this was an "insider job" and that the official stories are all lies with made-up stories about heroic air passengers, the pentagon, the WTC, etc., etc. Where is real Truth in all this? How is it possible that there are humans of such dark motivations to do all these things. How is it possible that so many people would so readily believe the lies they were told about these events? How is it possible that 65% of adults in the USA support the current state of war? What is the greater truth about the ignorance and somnambulance of so many people today? Consider the greater truths about the true nature of the global wars of the last 100 years. What if people really knew "the facts"? Even if they did, where is the spiritual Truth to all this?

Fortunately, this is now all coming to an end.

All that humans can externally verify is that they can find ways to maintain agreement of the nature of a reality that fundamentally is a projection. Once one can truly see that, then one can then see beyond appearances. Once spiritually so informed, much more can be accomplished that is "True" at its very nature.

There are other ways to "make things" than by the violence of human technology. People think that the "science" and practice of stone or metal work is advanced today, but it is very crude and violent in comparison with a spiritual consciousness that can speak to the energy and consciousness that constitutes “matter”.

So if one really wants to know Truth, then this is a path to ascension, nothing less.

-ASK

My message is a new man, homo novus. The old concept of man was of either/or; materialist or spiritualist, moral or immoral, sinner or saint. It was based on division, split. It created a schizophrenic humanity. The whole past of humanity has been sick, unhealthy, insane. In three thousand years, five thousand wars have been fought. This is just utterly mad; it is unbelievable. It is stupid, unintelligent, inhuman.

Once you divide man in two, you create misery and hell for him. He can never be healthy and can never be whole, the other half that has been denied will go on taking revenge. It will go on finding ways and means to overcome the part that you have imposed upon yourself. You will become a battle-ground, a civil war. That's what has been the case in the past.

In the past we were not able to create real human beings, but humanoids. A humanoid is one who looks like a human being but is utterly crippled, paralysed. He has not been allowed to bloom in his totality. He is half, and because he is half he is always in anguish and tension; he cannot celebrate. Only a whole man can celebrate. Celebration is the fragrance of being whole.

Only a tree that has lived wholly will flower. Man has not flowered yet.

The past has been very dark and dismal. It has been a dark night of the soul. And because it was repressive, it was bound to become aggressive. If something is repressed, man becomes aggressive, he loses all soft qualities. It was always so up to now. We have come to a point where the old has to be dropped and the new has to be heralded.

The new man will not be either/or; he will be both/and. The new man will be earthy and divine, worldly and other-worldly. The new man will accept his totality and he will live it without any inner division, he will not be split. His god will not be opposed to the devil, his morality will not be opposed to immorality; he will know no opposition. He will transcend duality, he will not be schizophrenic. With the new man there will come a new world, because the new man will perceive in a qualitatively different way and he will live a totally different life which has not been lived yet. He will be a mystic, a poet, a scientist, all together. He will not choose: he will be choicelessly himself.

That's what I teach: homo novus, a new man, not a humanoid. The humanoid is not a natural phenomenon. The humanoid is created by the society -- by the priest, the politician, the pedagogue. The humanoid is created, it is manufactured. Each child comes as a human being: total, whole, alive, without any split. Immediately the society starts suffocating him, stifling him, cutting him into fragments, telling him what to do and what not to do, what to be and what not to be. His wholeness is soon lost. He becomes guilty about his whole being. He denies much that is natural, and in that very denial he becomes uncreative. Now he will be only a fragment, and a fragment cannot dance, a fragment cannot sing, and a fragment is always suicidal because the fragment cannot know what life is. The humanoid cannot will on his own. Others have been willing for him -- his parents, the teachers, the leaders, the priests; they have taken all his willing. They will, they order; he simply follows. The humanoid is a slave.

I teach freedom. Now man has to destroy all kinds of bondages and he has to come out of all prisons -- no more slavery. Man has to become individual. He has to become rebellious. And whenever a man has become rebellious.... Once in a while a few people have escaped from the tyranny of the past, but only once in a while -- a Jesus here and there, a Buddha here and there. They are exceptions. And even these people, Buddha and Jesus, could not live totally. They tried, but the whole society was against it.

My concept of the new man is that he will be Zorba the Greek and he will also be Gautam the Buddha: the new man will be Zorba the Buddha. He will be sensuous and spiritual, physical, utterly physical, in the body, in the senses, enjoying the body and all that the body makes possible, and still a great consciousness, a great witnessing will be there. He will be Christ and Epicurus together.

The old man's ideal was renunciation; the new man's ideal will be rejoicing. And this new man is coming every day, he is arriving every day. People have not yet become aware of him. In fact he has already dawned. The old is dying, the old is on its death-bed. I don't mourn for it and I say please don't mourn for it. It is good that it dies, because out of its death the new will assert. The death of the old will be the beginning of the new. The new can come only when the old has died utterly.

Help the old to die and help the new to be born! And remember, the old has all the respectability, the whole past will be in his support; and the new will be a very strange phenomenon. The new will be so new that he will not be respected. Every effort will be made to destroy the new. The new cannot be respectable, but with the new is the future of the whole of humanity. The new has to be brought in.

My work consists in creating a Buddhafield, an energy-field, where the new can be born. I am only a midwife helping the new to come into a world which will not be accepting of it. The new will need much support from those who understand, from those who want some revolution to happen. And the time is ripe, it has never been so ripe. The time is right, it has never been so right. The new can assert itself, the break-through has become possible.

The old is so rotten that even with all support it cannot survive; it is doomed! We can delay, we can go on worshipping the old; that will be just delaying the process. The new has to come: at the most, we can help it to come sooner, or we can hinder it and delay its coming. It is good to help it. If it comes sooner, humanity can still have a future, and a great future: a future of freedom, a future of love, a future of joy.

I teach a new religion. This religion will not be Christianity and will not be Judaism and will not be Hinduism. This religion will not have any adjective to it. This religion will be purely a religious quality of being whole.

My sannyasins have to become the first rays of the sun that is going to come on the horizon. It is a tremendous task, it is an almost impossible task, but because it is impossible it is going to seduce all those who have any soul left in them. It is going to create a great longing in all those people who have some adventure hidden in their beings, who are courageous, brave, because it is really going to create a brave new world.

I talk of Buddha, I talk of Christ, I talk of Krishna, I talk of Zarathustra, so that all that is best and all that is good in the past can be preserved. But these are only a few exceptions. The whole humanity has lived in great slavery, chained, split, insane.

I say my message is simple, but it will be very hard, difficult, to make it happen. But the harder, the more impossible, it is, the greater is the challenge. And the time is right because religion has failed. science has failed. The time is right because the East has failed, the West has failed. Something of a higher synthesis is needed in which East and West can have a meeting, in which religion and science can have a meeting.

Religion failed because it was other-worldly and it neglected this world. And you cannot neglect this world; to neglect this world is to neglect your own roots. Science has failed because it neglected the other world, the inner, and you cannot neglect the flowers. Once you neglect the flowers, the innermost core of being, life loses all meaning. The tree needs roots, so man needs roots, and the roots can only be in the earth. The tree needs an open sky to grow, to come to a great foliage and to have thousands of flowers. Then only is the tree fulfilled, then only does the tree feel significance and meaning and life becomes relevant.

Man is a tree. Religion has failed because it is talking only of the flowers. Those flowers remain philosophical, abstract; they never materialise. They could not materialise because they were not supported by the earth. And science has failed because it cares only about the roots. The roots are ugly and there seems to be no flowering.

The West is suffering from too much science; the East has suffered from too much religion. Now we need a new humanity in which religion and science become two aspects of one man. And the bridge is going to be art. That's why I say that the new man will be a mystic, a poet and a scientist.

Between science and religion only art can be the bridge -- poetry, music, sculpture. Once we have brought this new man into existence, the earth can become for the first time what it is meant to become. It can become a paradise: this very body the Buddha, this very earth the paradise!

Osho, from: "Zorba The Buddha"
(copyright on Osho's talks is claimed by Osho Foundation International)

Examples of linear thought include the performing of arithmetic and the operating of machinery. In this mode of consciousness, people have learned to develop a rigid discipline of "seeing is believing" in order to discover what works and what doesn't.

With holistic awareness, the heart chakra is developed, allowing issues of separation to be resolved and integrated. Holistic awareness means that mind, body & spirit are seen as closely related facets of the human being. This heart-centered awareness is a viewpoint of integration or wholeness which heals the fears and discords that come with solar plexus consciousness.

There is a paradox with moving from linear intellect to heart-centered consciousness. While the intellectual phase of consciousness may say that "Seeing is believing," the holistic phase requires quite the reverse. In holistic consciousness, opposites are often both true as they are seen as opposite sides of the same coin or as polar opposites of the same issue.

Awareness that is limited to the intellect is subject to issues of separation; of us versus them, of struggling for resources that are perceived as scarce instead of solving the problem of their scarcity. Holistic awareness includes the idea that consciousness creates realities, that something must be created in consciousness - "believed" - before they can become a reality.

So, in holistic consciousness, "Believing is seeing" becomes a statement of truth, even though it is the opposite of "Seeing is believing." Instead, it adds the understanding that reality is created by consciousness. We are not merely observers of what is. We create what is.

Traditionally, people have entered a realm of holistic, heart-centered awareness when they pass on from this life. In the afterlife, their task is to heal the fears and hates of their physical lives and transform them into love and forgiveness, thus integrating themselves with others, rather than feeling separate from them.

Today, due to The Shift, more and more people are embracing holistic, heart-centered consciousness while still alive in physical bodies. As the heart is also the gateway to spiritual consciousness, this global movement is producing a revolution in spiritual unfoldment.

Spiritual consciousness is flowering in the global consciousness of humanity as The Shift progresses. Today's pioneers in consciousness are people just like yourself. They are exploring the new territory of unconditional love and experiencing a reunion with their own inner, spiritual connections.

The higher aspect of heart-centered consciousness is fully connected to your inner being, or soul. Your inner being is fully connected to the consciousness of the universe and to that which created the universe. Infinite Being is within each of us. We are Infinite Being.

The daily focus that we apply to our five senses and their connection to the outside world is just like performing a part in a play. We act out the part of being us, along the general theme of the type of events that we planned for this life. We ride along through the journey of this life, gaining the experiences that we planned to gain.

When you open up to your heart, and through that, reconnect to your own spiritual source, then you have become a part of the very future of humanity.

The Shift is heading towards a world where unconditional love and acceptance is normal, where strife is relegated to the distant past, where the true potential of human beings can express itself in the daily joy of being all that you are.
This article was written by Owen Waters, author of "The Shift: The Revolution in Human Consciousness" Available in hardcover or via immediate download at: http://www.infinitebeing.com/ebooks/theshift.htm

I've seen it played out a few zillion times. You're waiting for that magical day when someone makes the connection and recognizes who you really are. Maybe they'll first catch the sparkle in your eye. Or perhaps they'll marvel at your insights and the depth of your spirit. Someone who will help you connect the dots, believe in yourself, and make sense of it all. Someone who will understand you, approve of you, and unhesitatingly give you a leg up so that life can pluck your ready, ripened self from the branch of magnificence. Ahhhhhhhhhhh...

Well, I'm here to tell you that your wait is over. For some this is increasing the levels of fear and the desire to 'hold on' and return to a more familiar way of being.

Beloved ones, spiritual guidance is being offered in multiple ways from the Realms of Light, and is available to you at all times. If you are having difficulty feeling connected to your spiritual divine Source, see if you can create a regular quiet time in front of your altar. This will create a space where you can more easily feel and sense inner guidance that is being offered to you from the Realms of Light.

Each soul, each living being is created with God's holy and divine spark of light, love and truth. They myriad and infinite variations of unique individuality are God's celebration of the abundance and diversity of all life.

Seek to discover and to honor your unique divine harmony, the beautiful and blessed voice and creative expression that is You. Honor all parts of you, including those parts that carry pain, fear or darkness. Cherish every part of your divine being, and God's love will open in your heart and expand outward to encompass the whole world.

You are blessed with God's holy gift of life and breath at this sacred time on the Earth. May all aspects of your divine life in God, and your embodied life on Earth be richly blessed and brought forward into new possibilities, new life and new hope during this time of birth. With all love and blessings, Amen.
WorldBlessings.net is a spiritual gathering place dedicated to the unity of souls and to the creation of a sacred earth.

Philosophers such as Ken Wilber tend to reduce them to psychological tropes or delusions. Based on my own experiences, I strongly suspect we need to attain a more sophisticated understanding of how spirits may operate, as well as a set of techniques for dealing with them, before we can approach higher states and stages of development. We cannot have "Spirit" without spirits." --Daniel Pinchbeck, Toward 2012: Perspectives on the Next Age, p. 4

I begin with Daniel's quote because not only did it speak to me personally when I first read it, but no doubt if you are a member of Reality Sandwich/Evolver, you also share this sentiment. Perhaps you, like me, wonder whether and how the paths of yoga and shamanism intersect, and how accessing non-ordinary states of consciousness (NOSC) might be helpful for us yoga practitioners in the West. You might also have wondered what use psychoactive aids, or "plant sacraments," have for the contemporary yoga practitioner, especially those of us who have told that it is not a "pure" yogic path, and not one that has much to do with the ultimate goal of moksha (liberation).

Let's begin by looking at how yoga and shamanism can be seen as distinct disciplines, viewing it from the perspective of a very well-regarded scholar of yoga, Georg Feuerstein, who has done quite a bit of research into this very subject.

Feuerstein's most current published view on the relationship between Yoga and Shamanism to date is as follows:

"The development of Yoga's heritage spans at least five millennia and may go back into the dim past of the early Neolithic age. Conceivably, Yoga emerged out of the Shamanism of the Paleolithic, but at this point in our knowledge of Yoga's history this is mere speculation. Certainly Yoga and Shamanism have many features in common, though the final purpose is quite distinct: Whereas Yoga aims at spiritual liberation (moksha), Shamanism is primarily concerned with what in Yoga would be called the 'subtle dimension' and with so-called magical feats and healing service to the community." (p. 35)

That said, Feuerstein will be the first to admit thatshamanism is widespread even today in India, particularly among the Shaivites, or yogis who follow the tradition of Shiva. Thus in the 2005 film, "Origins of Yoga: Quest for the Spiritual," Feuerstein makes the following assertion:
"Many yogis also fulfill the role of the shaman, whereby they serve the community as healers, magicians, wise men, and so on."

One only need look at the practices and of the Naga Babas (the most radical of Shaivites) to see unmistakable signs of shamanism: Use of psychoactive herbs (ganja, datura, etc.), ecstatic dance and song, the use of the dhuni (firepit) which confers healing and blessing upon the community, asceticism, siddhis (magical powers), initiatory rites, etc. Dr. Wolf-Dieter Storl, writing in his book Shiva: The Wild God of Power and Ecstasy, comments that, "When confronted with the image of Shiva, an anthropologist will most likely think of a Super-Shaman," (p. 34), as Shiva, in the form of Nataraja, Lord of the Dance, carries a drum in one hand, and a fire in the other.
Feuerstein's reply to this is that, yes, it is true that many yogis fulfill the role of the shaman, yet the domain of the yogi (or yogin) extends beyond that of the shaman:

"The yogin's ultimate purpose, however is to go beyond the subtle levels of existence explored by the shaman, and to realize the transcendental Being, which is transdimensional and unqualified, and which the yogin knows to be his innermost identity. Thus, whereas the shaman is a healer or miracle-worker, the yogin is primarily a transcender. But in the spiritual ascent to the transcendental Reality, the yogin is likely to gather a great deal of knowledge about the subtle realms (sukshma-loka). This explains why many yogins have demonstrated extraordinary abilities and have long been looked upon by the Indian people as miracle workers and magicians. From the yogic point of view, however, the paranormal abilities possessed by many adepts are insignificant by comparison with the ultimate attainment of Self-Realization, or enlightenment." (The Yoga Tradition, p. 95)

In other words, to use the language of Ken Wilber, the yogi "transcends and includes" the shaman -- the role of the shaman tends to be part of the yogi job description, yes, but that job description also entails exploring and embodying the causal realms, not only the astral planes.

Yet it is important to note here that Feuerstein does not discount the importance of the yogi's consciously familiarizing him or herself with the subtle planes of existence (via astral travel, use of psychoactives, etc.), both for the sake of her own evolution, but also to serve as a healer and intermediary for the community. In other words, while not the goal, for Feuerstein there's certainly a place for shamanism in Yoga.

But what of Feuerstein's supposition that the shaman does not access the causal dimensions, while the yogi can and does? Is there any evidence to support such a claim? This brings us back to the original quote from Daniel, and into a scholarly debate that has been going on for some time between Stanislav Grof and Ken Wilber.

I'm not sure how aware Daniel was of this debate when he made his criticism of Wilber, but Grof and other transpersonal psychologists have been leveling similar critiques for years. In his critical essay, "Ken Wilber's Spectrum Psychology," in which Grof confronts Wilber on a number of key points, Grof makes the following statement, almost as if directly responding to Feuerstein as well:

"Shamanic literature, as well as the personal experiences of many anthropologists with shamans, leaves little doubt that they regularly have spiritual experiences not only of the subtle realms, but also of the causal realms."[i]

No doubt Feuerstein would argue that we're talking here about the over-arching goals or premises of shamanism and yoga, not what some yogis or shamans might actually access in their own personal experience. Both Feuerstein and Wilber seem to hold the great Indian sage, Ramana Maharishi[ii] in very high esteem, and they would no doubt suggest that in the world of shamanism we don't find individuals who have similarly attained to Ramana's level of consciousness.

While this is a point well worth deeply considering and probing, Grof would no doubt suggest that shamans are on the same path of integration, and access many of the same levels in their NOSCs, as perhaps even Ramana Maharishi did in his years of solitude on Arunachala on his way to ultimately becoming the universally honored sage he subsequently became.[iii] However, as I am not as familiar with shamanism as I am with yoga, I cannot directly point to a personage in the wide world of shamanism who clearly reached a similar pinnacle in their evolution.

Let me just add a personal note here, though, and say that during my own initial ayahuasca experience -- the most harrowing, hallowing episode of this earthly incarnation, I hasten to add (next to my birth, which I don't remember) -- I did feel as if it were a kind of shamanic initiation, involving a profound sense that egoic body-mind complex was being dismembered and ultimately reconstituted. Once the final re-integration was complete, I experienced myself (Self) as "pure awareness" devoid of egoity. At that point, there were no more "vrittis," or mental modifications, to use the language of the Yoga Sutras, I was truly in the state of Yoga. In simpler terms, I was experiencing the causal ground of Being, at this point, not any astral dimension but a "transpersonal" state of consciousness.

Put simply, my shamanic journey took me through the astral into the causal, and ultimately back into a sense of "ahamkara," or narrow self-consciousness -- "The Box" -- though a considerably expanded box, to be sure.

Now, Wilber does not deny the reality of these experiences for the experiencer, but he does seem to distinguish between what he calls "back door" (or "regressive") transpersonal experiences, and "front door" experiences. The former are induced via therapies such as Holotropic breathwork, rebirthing, psychedelics, hypnosis, etc., whereas the "front door" experiences come about spontaneously through practices such as meditation and other "consciousness disciplines."[iv]

To get a better understanding of what Wilber means by all of this, let's "listen" to an excerpt from a somewhat less formal talk with the Integral philosopher. Please note that here Wilber's humorous but derogatory designation "druggies" could substitute for the "back door" men, and "meditators" for those who do It through the front door:

"My sense is that the people I know that have done it responsibly, have gained a lot from using psychedelics to open up a certain space. But there are downsides. Particularly in this movement, you find there are two general approaches to consciousness studies. One is the druggies, and one is the meditators.

"And the druggies are into altered states, and the meditators are into stages. And the meditators believe that you have to actually discipline and work and it's four years, ten years, fifteen years, to reach a stable realization of these higher states and stages. And the psychedelic or drug side is much more into altered states, ayahuasca, LSD, any sort of number of altered states, and they don't tend to get into permanent realizations based on these things.

"I happen to believe that both of these models -- I use states and stages -- I believe both of them are required. But there's kind of an acrimony between these two groups. There are very few people that do drugs and are serious meditators. And the people that only do drugs, I think eventually it kind of tends to catch up in a way. I don't see permanent realization coming from these things, I don't see permanent access to some of these higher states, and I think at some point the simple neurological noise of the ingredients starts to almost outshine the luminosity that was there, perhaps, at the beginning.

"And so the people I know that I've watched over thirty years that have done only drugs have becoming increasingly, frankly, unpleasant people, and disillusioned, and sad, in certain ways. It's not to say that meditators do all that much better, but there is at least a chance with meditators that you can have a permanent realization that is enduring and not merely a transitory state.

"I think people do better if they either have a judicious combination of the two, or if they do mostly meditation. And my recommendation is don't just do drugs, because people tend to get into trouble, and the theories I see coming out of people that just do drugs are frankly pretty wacky theories. They don't take enough evidence into account, they are not inclusive enough, they don't include other types of data and evidence and I think they' re very partial."[v] So there you have it. Of course, although Wilber doesn't mention Grof or Mckenna by name, they are to be numbered among "the druggies" whose theories are "pretty wacky." You'll note that this interview was from April, 2001, almost exactly one year after Mckenna's passing due to brain cancer, possibly caused by extensive use of high doses of psychedelics (Terence himself suggested it was due to his cannabis use).[vi]

Although I sense that there is general support for the Pinchbeck-Mckenna-Grof side of things among those who are reading this essay, and my own current view is that it seems about time that we emerging yoga shamans start to use "any means necessary" and available to us to explore the inner and outer Cosmos, I do feel that Wilber's general point here is very valid, namely that a combination of entheogens AND meditation seems to be the wisest route. Let ayahuasca be the means of cleansing the doors of perception, if that is your path, but further elaborate and deepen into such expanded states of consciousness via slower, more stable means such as a meditative discipline.

That said, I don't know that we can really make such sweeping judgements about "druggies" like Mckenna. I don't see him as having been unpleasant, disillusioned, or sad, as Wilber suggests (nor Grof, for that matter), and actually I feel much more inspired by him and Grof at this point than I ever have by Wilber. I sense the reason could be that Wilber's use of psychedelics is rather limited -- he openly admits that one long LSD experience in college pretty much scared him away from psychedelics, until he got into MDMA in the early ‘80s, making a point to note that it was still legal then (though E is not a psychedelic per se) -- and I really feel that it is a cardinal principle of debate that one really shouldn't theorize about what one has not personally experienced in a direct, intimate way. How can Wilber really talk about these Transpersonal therapies without taking them for a spin himself? Test out an actual sacrament like ayahuasca, else be accused of armchair philosophy!

To be fair, perhaps Mckenna, Grof, and company also have not done their homework in terms of having a spiritual discipline that they can use as a framework to inform their own models of reality, and it could be that they do not fully comprehend what Wilber is getting at. The same might be said for those of us who would throw out the guru model and eastern metaphysics without actually ever having had a deep encounter with them. I sense that this may be one of the greatest blind spots of the contemporary entheogenic community.

For myself, though, I appreciate that neither Mckenna nor Grof were ever bent on establishing a Kosmic "theory of everything" as Wilber has been. I see that rather, they have always been more intent on pointing to the Dark Side of the Moon, to the Mystery, and showing us ways that we can become more Wonder-filled by invoking and evoking the Mystery. So to invoke Ken Kesey's immortal words:

"The answer is never the answer. What's really interesting is the mystery. If you seek the mystery instead of the answer, you'll always be seeking. I've never seen anybody really find the answer -- they think they have, so they stop thinking. But the job is to seek mystery, evoke mystery, plant a garden in which strange plants grow and mysteries bloom. The need for mystery is greater than the need for an answer."
I would add that the need for experience of the Mystery is what I'm getting at. Theories and models will always have their value and use, because really only experience + understanding will equal a true change in perspective, but when it comes down to it, talk is cheap, and the hard work is actually taking the plunge into the Unknown and then coming back down to earth and actually embodying the wisdom we've been gifted.

Bringing this Back Down to Earth...

So to bring this all into the intense present moment, there is a shift happening in the world of yoga in connection to shamanistic practice, particularly the use of plant sacraments like ayahuasca. This has actually been happening for some time now, but it's really only the past few years that the older generation of yoga teachers who had been using ayahuasca for decades have begun to speak about it more openly. To take one example, Ganga White, one of the top yoga teachers in the world, quite openly spoke on the subject in his recently published, Yoga Beyond Belief:

"I touch on the topic of plant sacraments because it is a timely subject and something I am repeatedly asked about." White continues, "There are neural pathways in the brain that are more ancient than our beliefs, philosophies, and religious proscriptions. There are keys to the doorways of the rich interior landscape that open dimensions of beauty, order, intelligence, immense complexity, and sacredness beyond measure. These realities can be so powerful, brilliant, and intense that, while visiting them, our world seems like a distant hallucination, in the way that these other realities can seem hallucinatory from this one. Seeing and being touched by these mystical experiences can change us and help us in positive ways with insights into self-healing, enlightened living, and the wholeness of life. Our bodies and brains operate on chemical messengers and information exchange systems in nature. Some scholars and evidence show that medicinal plants were probably at the origin or religious and mystical experience. To say plant sacraments are unnatural, and practices, rituals, and belief systems created by man are natural, is an absurdity. It is a shame that fear and conditioning can preclude the greatest journey...within."[vii]

Now, these are the words of a master Hatha yogi who has been on the yoga path for some 40+ years and has himself studied with some of the great yoga masters, and I for one did not take them lightly when I read them a couple of years ago. Indeed, White's comments were one of the factors that influenced me to further explore plant medicine, and to write a book on the subject.

This was not an easy decision on my part, because I, like many Hatha yoga practitioners, was so very careful of what I put into my body and had a great fear of causing it permanent damage, not to mention simply messing with my yoga practice. But what I subsequently learned from my plant journeys, interestingly enough, is that it is precisely the over-identification with the body (bordering on obsession, for some) that needs to be released in order for one's ego boundaries to be bridged. Again, this is an understanding that would seem to be of utmost value to those who are utilizing the technology of Hatha yoga as means of self-transcendence.[viii]
There are many other reasons why a yoga practitioner might find taking ayahuasca helpful, both personally and for the healing of our communities and planet. As for the latter, I appreciated what Daniel said during his dialogue with Sharon Gannon on ayahuasca[ix], particularly his points that the yoga community has tended to become insular and elitist, and his suggestion that we're in a time that calls for people like us modern yogis and yoginis, who are already familiar with moving through uncomfortable spaces, to consider the value plant sacraments might have for us now in this time of rapid shifts on the planet.

I can relate to these points as I've experienced the insularity and elitism firsthand, the kind that sadly shakes its head when the subject of "drugs" comes up, and I have also seen for myself how the ayahuasca experience can move one through some very uncomfortable spaces, thus making it that much easier to deal with real world events and issues. Of course, this is what work "on the mat" does, albeit in a slightly less dramatic way (though even that can be very intense for some -- a Bikram class, for example); a plant shamanic journey just accelerates the process.

That certainly was my experience. If I may paraphrase Timothy Leary's famous quote slightly: I learned more during my first session with ayahuasca than I had in 13 years on my yoga mat.
We can also look at it this way: Some of us now have spent years disciplining our bodies in a rather extreme way, supposedly so that we might prepare our physiology for intense "Samadhi" moments, to become fit vessels to "hold" an intense amount of energy and not get fried, but rather be able to navigate "uncomfortable" spaces in a fully conscious way. Well, if you're like I was, you might well wonder from whence such experiences will come? They probably won't come from Hatha yoga itself, and also almost certainly not even from Raja yoga (the path outlined in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras), unless you are a very devoted, disciplined meditator. No, it seems to me that such experiences will come through shamanic journeying, and particularly through the use of plants in a sacramental, yogic way. Could it be that this is why we have been doing all of these intense practices, contortions and the like?[x]

Here's a wonderfully expressed statement from a RS/Evolver member who is also a yoga teacher who uses ayahuasca as a sacrament, having been influenced to do so by another internationally recognized yoga teacher of the older generation. In a private email interview, I had asked her what ayahuasca meant to her as a yoga teacher and practitioner, and here's what she replied:

"Like many yogis, I am very interested in the nature of consciousness. Isn't that why we do yoga? As such, I've explored both traditional and less traditional ways to shift my perception of reality -- and, yes, that includes working with various entheogens in a sacred setting. Without getting into the details of when, where and with whom, I'd say I have done a reasonable amount of work with ayahuasca and I've always experienced it as a powerful medicine -- healing, transformative and liberating on the most profound levels. I so appreciate the fact that the work I do in ceremony builds on, and is harmonious with, the work I do on my mat. For me, ayahuasca is a teacher who speaks poignantly to the challenges of the Kali Yuga [the so-called "dark age of materialism"]; little wonder she is slowly finding her way into the mainstream."
To return again to Daniel's point about exploring the world of spirits, what in yoga is termed the astral or subtle realm, we live in such a materialistic society and age that even we yoga people need reminders that there's a whole lot more going on here than what we experience through our five senses. And maybe the spirit world and beings from other star systems really do want to connect with us via these plant modalities?

Maybe we are meant to consciously alter our DNA as part of the next stage of evolution of humanity? Maybe the plant sacraments really are the true, original teachers of humanity who were sent here long ago to save us from ourselves -- at this precise point in history? The evidence suggests that this is all the case, but ultimately we really don't know.
What I sense we do know is that just understanding intellectually that "All is One," and that we should just "Be Present," or having someone tell us that some day some way we might have an experience that this is so, is really not satisfying. We want to fully have the experience first, and then use that experience as a model for how we might live more in union, in presence.

To truly arrive at a state of presence, there very well may be a lot of "shaking up" that might be required.

To sum up this "prolegomena," which is to say this very preliminary discussion, what I have tried to open up as a possibility is our seeing that there really is a place in yoga for shamanic practices, particularly the use of "plant sacraments." And to say not only is there a place for these things, but there might be a necessity for these things right now in terms of healing our fractured selves, communities, and planet, and that yoga is one of the most effective disciplines for "preparing the ground," so to speak, for the harvest, as well as for "riding out the storm." Oh yogi/ni, why have you made of your body a fit Temple for the Divine if not for this purpose?

Footnotes:

[i] See Stanislav Grof, M.D., "Ken Wilber's Spectrum Psychology," @ http://primal-page.com/grofken.htm.Another wonderful book by Grof which is really a must read for those interested in these subjects is Grof's recent offering, When the Impossible Happens: Adventures in Non-Ordinary Reality. Sounds True, Incorporated, 2005. Particularly interesting are Grof's accounts of his meeting with Swami Muktananda, as well as his chapter on his experience with 5-MeO-DMT.

[ii] Here's but one website dedicated to Ramana Maharishi (or, "Maharshi"): http://www.sriramanamaharshi.org . One book which I would highly recommend that everyone read or re-read is Yogananda's Autobiography of a Yogi, particularly the chapter entitled "The Resurrection of Sri Yukteswar," as that goes into some detail about what the "subtle" (astral) and "causal" planes are like. Not that we should take this is as the last word on the subject, but just to familiarize ourselves with one highly influential view.

[iii] Grof quotes John Perry: "True mystics occasionally reactivate regressive complexes on their way to mature unity states," and goes on to say: "In spite of the fact that Ken acknowledges frequent mysterious invasion of transpersonal insights in psychotic patients, mysticism remains for him miles apart from psychosis. It represents for him a purely transegoic progression, whereas psychosis is primarily characterized by a regression to early infancy in the service of the ego."

[iv] See Ken Wilber, The Eye of the Spirit: An Integral Vision for a World Gone Slightly Mad. Shambhala, 1998, pp. 165-185. In these pages, Wilber for the first time in writing confronted Grof's criticisms of his work. This needs to be read along with Grof's essay in response (see above).

[v] Excerpted from a 2001 interview between Wilber and Piers Clement, available here:
http://www.geocities.com/piers_clement/wilber1.html

[vi] There's a discussion of what might have been the cause of Terence's death @ http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/1696452.

[vii] Ganga White, Yoga Beyond Belief: Insights to Awaken and Deepen Your Practice. North Atlantic Books, 2007. Danny Paradise is another top yoga teacher who has been an influential advocate of plant sacraments for many years. For an interview with him in which he directly speaks to some of the same issues, check out the following podcast: http://kmo.livejournal.com/408508.html.

[viii] From email correspondence with White and from speaking with one of his students, I understand that even though White made that statement, he still has been rather guarded about what he makes public about his use of plant sacraments. He apparently will only talk about it with his students when the subject is broached. I sense that this will all change in the next couple of years, that there will be far more openness in the yoga community about these subjects.

[ix] You can watch the video of their dialogue, "Asanas and Ayahuasca," at http://www.realitysandwich.com/asanas_and_ayahuasca. You will also want to read all of the comments posted. My own view of what some called a "fiasco," is that it might have gone over better if Daniel had been dialoguing with a yogini, such as Padmani, who is both a yoga teacher and a regular user of plant sacraments like ayahuasca.

[x] I also sense that it is precisely those of us who have been perhaps overly physically-oriented in our life and yoga practice that actually need a high dose of something, anything to bust through the layers of egoity. This idea will take a good deal of unpacking and I’ll leave that for a separate piece.
Source: http://www.realitysandwich.com/yoga_shaman

Is that possible?"

Yang Chu replied: "According to the laws of nature there is no such thing as immortality."

Meng-sun-Yang: "Yet is it possible to acquire a very long life?"

Yang Chu: "According to the laws of nature there is no such thing as a very long life. Neither can life be preserved by cherishing or the body benefited by fostering."

Meng-sun-Yang: "What would be a long life?"

"All things were the same as they are now. The five good and bad passions were of old as they are now. So also the safety and peril of the four limbs. Grief and joy for the things of this world were of old as they are now, and the constant change of peace and revolution. Having seen and heard all these things, one would already be awearied of it at the age of a hundred. How much more after a very long life!"

Meng-sun-Yang: "If it be so a sudden death would be preferable to a long life; therefore we ought to run on to a pointed sword or jump into deep water to have what our heart yearns for."

Yang Chu: "No. Having once come into life regard it and let it pass; mark its desires and wishes, and so wait death.

"When death comes, disregard it and let it come. Mark what it brings you, and be drifted away to annihilation.

"If you pay no regard to life and death, and let them be as they are, how can you be anxious lest our life should end too soon?"

-- Yang Chu's Garden of Pleasure Ch. The ultimate reason for life is self-discovery. Yet, many people spend their entire lives getting farther and farther away from their own true nature. Most people are constantly distorting their own idea of themselves, only because they do not know what they truly are. They are not even aware that this identity they hold of themselves is false, since they do not know their who they truly are. How can you expect someone to discover their true inner nature when they are constantly being distracted by society as well as constantly interacting with others who themselves also do not know their own true nature?

In this article, this false sense of self that almost everyone holds onto in place of truly knowing themselves will be referred to as the “false self”. I will discuss this issue more, but first I must answer the seemingly obvious question: why would anyone want to get to know their true self?

Only by knowing yourself can you ever understand and love others. This is not a superficial understanding of others. I am talking about feeling your deep, divine connection with each and every person that you come across in your life. When you truly understand yourself, you cannot help but feel a powerful, unconditional love for yourself. This love is so powerful that it breaks all boundaries between yourself and others. When you truly love and know yourself (Note: the powerful feeling of loving yourself only arises when you have come to know yourself) you stop seeing people’s false sense of self, instead you see everyone as a beautiful soul. When you are in contact with someone, you know without a doubt that they are you and that you are them.

The self that you must come to know is not an artificial creation of the mind. Rather it is the mind itself. We go through life projecting who we think we are. This false self is nothing more than an artificial creation of the mind, yet we fully believe that this is who we are. No! This is a projection of the barbaric society humanity has created for itself.

This false self is the person you project in hopes that somehow you are projecting your deep, divine self. Once again, you do not consciously project this false self. Instead you are mistaken and have not come to know your true inner nature. The false self is the person that others (who also do not know their own true nature) bring out of you. You act and think with this false sense of self completely oblivious to your true inner nature.

Even though you may have lived your entire life thinking of yourself with a false identity, does not mean that you cannot come to know yourself. In fact, we must all eventually come to know our own true inner nature. Most people spend their entire lives running away from their true selves, only to come crashing back to knowing themselves through the transition that we call death.

As a side note, your false self is the only thing that dies in death. It is the reason we fear death, because our true selves are unknown. All we know is our false self and we know that one day we will lose this false sense of self. On the other hand, the true self cannot possibly die, nor could it ever be born. It has always been. The true self is the Infinite Being at the heart of your soul. It is your Essence. God has always been a symbol of the true self.

Modern society is made up of distractions. These distractions consume our lives. They ensure that we remain oblivious to our true inner nature. Almost every pastime or activity that you can name is a distraction! This even includes working and accomplishing goals (when the purpose of the accomplishment is not the process of accomplishing the goal, but the reason behind it is to get you somewhere you think you want to go).

Even most spiritual growth or personal development information is a distraction. When you are holding a false sense of self, this information feeds it. Although, these distractions may help to give you clues as to your true nature, they cannot directly trigger self-realization. The only source of truth you have in your life is your own inner nature. Although these information products may guide you, the path to knowing yourself is a personal and intimate journey. I cannot come close to explaining the true nature of yourself, especially when you mistakenly believe that you are the false self.

I strongly urge you to dedicate yourself to understanding the inner workings of your mind. If you choose this path, you must pursue it with an unrelenting passion for the mind as well as an openness to the unexpected and unbelievable intricacies of its true nature. This is how you will come to know your true nature. Do whatever it takes! If enough of us choose this path of running towards ourselves (instead of away), the next great age of humanity will arise from self-knowledge (which leads to a true, unconditional self-love). We have so much to learn from the workings of our own mind.

Society as we know it is fundamentally flawed. The false self is a result of this sick society. And, the false self is also what keeps us from recognizing the deep flaws in our current ways of living (or society in general). As you can tell, this creates a vicious circle that perpetuates the false sense of self and our barbaric society. Truly knowing ourselves is the only way we can ever transform society. Humanity must literally awaken to its own true nature in order for us to create a new world. Actually, once humanity realizes its true self we will not have a choice in created a new world. We will not be able to live in the old ways of being which were created as a result of being mistaken about our own true identity

In order for the path of self-discovery to have an impact on whom you think you are, you must minimize the distractions in your life. Spend at least a few hours every week with absolutely no distractions. This means you simply be. You do not do anything and you do not try to get anywhere. Just be still and completely open to WHATEVER (including nothing) happens. Let go of all the resistance you are not even aware of holding. Open up to your own self. Look into your mind and do not judge what you see. If boredom (a projection of the false self) sets in, simply observe it. Completely surrender to the boredom. Do not choose to be distracted.

Chances are you have been living a distracted life and it is all you know. This can always change, but you must be the source of the change. Spend time with yourself. If you do this enough eventually you will surrender to all uncomfortableness (a result of the false self) that sets in when you are not distracted. Once this takes place you will initiate your magical journey of truly knowing your own inner nature.

The process of knowing yourself is a continuous one. I highly doubt that there is an end to self-discovery. The true journey of knowing the deep, inner nature of your own mind can be difficult to initiate. But once started, I can’t imagine it ever stopping. Your thirst for true self-discovery will never again be satisfied. Each day, in every way, you will come to love yourself more and more. This will have a profound impact on everyone you come in contact with. This wave of self-love will begin to radiate through society. Eventually vibrating to a level where society will be transformed. Remember, this is all a result of knowing the inner workings of your own mind.

The good news and the bad news is that there are no set-rules or guidelines for self-discovery. You must simply learn to surrender to your own mind. It may be helpful to acknowledge and reaffirm your intent to know yourself everyday. When it is right you will know exactly what your next step is. Go within, tune in to the “center” of your mind and simply listen. Listen intently and passionately, with absolutely no bias or expectations at all!

The only source of truth we have in life is our own inner nature. We are all on a journey of self-discovery. Once you get past all of your false needs and desires (the internal result of this false sense of identity) you will come to know whom you truly are.

It is a very personal process that you must painstakingly go through. Nobody can possibly tell you who you truly are. This includes you (or rather who you think you are). Stop trying to tell yourself who you are and truly listen within. Right now, you have the potential to realize that you simply are. At the very least, please never forget this potential within you.

Love,

Jason Randhawa

It is not a matter of if, but a matter of when. Indeed, we are all riding that evolutionary wave that will inevitably and thankfully wash us to the shore of a new way of being.

No matter where we are in this journey, we have the choice to open more to the process or remain where we are for a while longer (or even close down more, but who would want to do that after experiencing the delight of opening?). If we have the desire to open more fully, to be that proverbial flowering lotus, we often have to challenge ourselves, pull ourselves out of our comfort zone. We have to take a bold leap.

In Teotihuacán, Mexico there is a place where such a leap was literally taken. Teotihuacán (Teo) is known as "The Place Where Humans Become Gods". From about 650 C.E. (Common Era) to about 1200 C.E., the Toltec civilization thrived in Teo, just prior to the Aztecs. The Toltecs were not a single culture. Rather, they were a group of individuals from a variety of tribal groups who achieved a level of spiritual enlightenment.

Most people go to Teo now as tourists to walk amidst the ruins and climb the two largest pyramids in the complex -- the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon. A smaller, but no less magnificent, pyramid, the Pyramid of Quetzalcoatl, also resides in the complex.

Quetzalcoatl is the Mesoamerican deity that is part snake, part bird, representing the union of matter and spirit, earth and heaven, the "Sovereign Plumed Serpent." His prophetic return (anticipated in our time, according to some) heralds a time of peace and a new spiritual era. This new spiritual era is the result of the unity that Quetzalcoatl represents. It is the honoring of the divine masculine and the divine feminine, logic and reason, science and spirituality. It is an honoring of the Oneness of all things.

Here at the Pyramid of Quetzalcoatl individuals would have the opportunity to expand their awareness and perspective and take a leap of faith. This area has two parts. On one side there is a high platform. On the other side is the Pyramid of Quetzalcoatl itself. In between the platform and the pyramid is a drop off of about 30 feet. The distance between the two is about 15-20 feet.
Back in the time of the Toltecs, a spiritual leader would lead a group to this area in the dark of night. He or she would then challenge individuals in the group to make the leap from the platform to the pyramid, leaping into the "mouth" of Quetzalcoatl. Many would be scared and not jump, knowing the distance before them. Some, though, would jump. Unbeknownst to them, the spiritual teacher filled up the chasm with water, allowing those who took their leap of faith to make it safely.

If you are a fan of the movie The Matrix (aren't we all?) there is a perfect equivalent to this concept. Morpheus loads the "jump program" for Neo to take his leap. At this point in the movie, Neo has already awakened into the "real world" and been unplugged. The much more difficult process then begins of disconnecting him mentally.

"You have to let it all go, Neo -- fear, doubt and disbelief. Free your mind," Morpheus says to Neo on the rooftop. Morpheus then leaps with ease to the other rooftop 50 feet away. Watching this, Neo is in awe, and he gathers his courage to make his leap. He bravely runs and jumps off the edge of the roof, but of course he falls. As the movie mentions, everyone falls the first time. Why does everyone fall the first time? Because it is so hard to flip that switch! After years, decades of believing we cannot do something, our minds become very attached. It is a very strong structure, and it is a process to dismantle the structure and fully detach. But the lesson is, Neo took the chance and leapt! And eventually, through several additional leaps of faith, Neo awakens on more levels, learns to fully disconnect from the limitations created by his mind, and ultimately creates a world of peace and saves humanity.

Interestingly, this peace transpires only through the unity of the divine feminine and the divine masculine. In the Matrix movies, the Oracle is represented by a motherly, black woman. She is the feminine, the intuitive one, the yin. The Architect, on the other hand, is represented as a white man, with white beard, even a very light-colored suit. He is the masculine, logic and reasoning, the yang. In the end they come together for the sake of harmony.

I had the privilege of going to the sacred land of Teotihuacán on a spiritual "power journey" a few years ago, an experience that forever and beautifully altered my life. Currently, the Pyramid of Quetzalcoatl is set up for tourists with a metal fence around the platform so that you cannot walk (or fall) down to the bottom of the drop off or go crawling on the pyramid. The leaders of our journey brought us to the platform facing the mouth of Quetzalcoatl for us to ask ourselves, had we been with the Toltecs in ancient times, "Would I have taken the leap?" More significantly, "Would I take the leap right now?" without knowing about the water, of course. Would I leap with complete trust and surrender? I looked over the edge, seeing the distance and the hard stones below, just as Neo hesitantly gazed over the edge of the skyscraper prior to his brave jump.

I decided to take the leap, which wasn't literally flying across the chasm, but I challenged myself to open to a new perspective, a new possibility. During this journey at Teo, I had experienced a vision. I could have discounted it as my imagination. I could have gotten stuck in a belief that I was completely loony. I could have kept quiet about it, but I decided to open my mind, heart and mouth to the possibility that it was something to be truly heard and even shared. My vision showed me how I was to play a role in the continued evolution of humanity, starting with a specific ceremony to be conducted with two other people and a very powerful crystal on top of the Pyramid of the Sun. I decided to follow through with my vision and the ceremony was completed as it was shown to me.

Through the ceremony there was an activation of the earth's energetic grid, initiated from the place of Teo and connecting with many other sites around the world. This activation raised the vibration. Surprisingly or not, this happens all over the world each day, as our consciousness is continually shifting and evolving, and people are following through with their intuitions, raising vibration, and opening themselves to assist others in the process of awakening.

So what is our next bold leap? What is our next move to more fully disconnect us from our own limitations and realize our potential? Is it something personal, such as gathering our courage to ask a man or woman that we've long-been attracted to on a date? Is it giving our supervisor at work notice because we know that our job is no longer serving our best interests? Is our next bold move writing a blog posting that reveals our beliefs/experiences even though they may go against the grain of much of society? Is it larger scaled? Is it writing a book for the world? Is it following through with an intuition or vision that involves us and our role to help humanity?

For each of us, if we so choose, our next bold leap is to simply shine, to express ourselves, to exude our brilliant, divine nature. In what specific manner that is expressed is up to you. I am reminded of Marianne Williamson's wise words, from A Return to Love: Reflections on the Principles of "A Course in Miracles":

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, "Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?" Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we're liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

We are riding that wave to a new way of being. Or, to use the other metaphor, each one of us stands on the platform facing the Pyramid of Quetzalcoatl. The situation before us looks to be one of great distance, and that is sometimes utterly frightening! "Free your mind." The benefit of taking a bold leap into the mouth of Quetzalcoatl is we get ingested into the knowing of the unity of matter and spirit, of our human aspect and also our divine aspect. We no longer have to fear that we are inadequate. And we no longer have to fear that we are "powerful beyond measure." With this knowing, we experience freedom and so have the opportunity to choose what we want to do next. Perhaps our next bold leap as a unified tribe of humanity will be to create that longed-for world of peace.

Source: http://www.realitysandwich.com/what_our_next_bold_leap

This energy of transformation can express itself at many levels. The energy has to go somewhere, so if the energy of transformation fails to find expression at a higher frequency level, it will spiral downwards until it does find an outlet for its expression.

It can be channeled into a spiritual focus, into emotional release or it can be allowed to manifest in the only remaining field of popular action, the physical world. There it will erupt through emotion-driven, physical phenomena - volcanic eruption, earthquakes and violent storms, for example. All of these "natural" disasters are driven by the chaotic emotional energy of mankind. All of them can be healed and prevented when people channel enough spiritual energy to soothe the chaos.

People ask why they are here on Earth at this time of rapid change and upheaval. As a spiritual person, one of the reasons you chose this time was the fact that you know how to neutralize the energies of change which would otherwise cause chaos.

Today, it is more important than ever to send healing energies into the world. You can make all the difference in the world today when you help balance the incoming energies of transformation by using this Heal the World technique: http://www.InfiniteBeing.com/0607/healtheworld.htm

Martel

The pressure's on in the noosphere. Opposing views on everything from the use of plastic to the existence of God vie for dominance in the arena of collective thought. There are times when philosophy leaves the cloisters of academia to impose itself upon every individual. Philosophy today is not a Mickey Mouse elective -- it is a universal verdict. On the other hand, if there was ever a time to acknowledge the elusiveness of absolute truths, it is now. "Everything is relative" has attained the self-evidence of a cliché.

In a recent article, Daniel Pinchbeck considers the possibility that through our dialectical deadlocks we may come to a revival of "mythological consciousness," a way of thinking rooted not in logic and discursive reasoning but in "symbol and image." He writes: "A society that reintegrates mythic thought at a deeper level of awareness will be able to handle seemingly contradictory perspectives without breaking down." [1]

We talk a lot about transformation these days. The problems we face are serious, but if every problem is an opportunity, then our ravaged earth still holds promise. In many circles, apathy and resignation have given way to hope for another possible world, a revolution of human culture. Of course, the danger in any revolution is that you end up rebuilding what you left behind. Recall the end of Animal Farm, when the animals gather at the window of the farmhouse to watch their pig leaders argue with human farmers: "The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again but already it was impossible to say which was which."[2]

Repetition compulsion is a familiar concept to fans of Freud and anyone who has ever suffered from neurosis or addiction. When the mind can't get to the core of a problem, the same mistakes are made again and again. In psychoanalytic terms, such situations confront us with aspects of the psyche of which we remain unaware. Implicitly or explicitly, the so-called consciousness movement is an attempt to penetrate this unconscious blockage. But when we say, with Terence McKenna, that we need an "archaic revival" of shamanic thinking in our culture, what exactly do we mean?

Many people expect the revolution to take the form of a grand intervention: a transcendent "Other" will break into our time-stream to transform us body, mind and soul, if not change the fabric of space-time itself. Is this a realistic (or even safe) expectation? Would it be better to see in events like the end of the Mayan Long Count a symbol whose value is lost the moment we mistake it for the thing it represents?

"Mythological consciousness" may be the key to another age. But what is myth? What is consciousness? And what do the Hopi mean when they say, "We are the ones we have been waiting for?"[3]

Myth and Archetype

D.H. Lawrence defined myths as "attempt[s] to narrate a whole human experience ... a profound experience of the human body and soul."[4] Though they are not equivalent to the propositions of science, myths do have a factual basis. The facts they point to are those strange attractors that C.G. Jung called the archetypes of the collective unconscious. Pre-lingual and pre-rational, the archetypes exist deep in the human organism and evoke, across cultural and geographical boundaries, the same recurring images, symbols and patterns of behavior. They are the "inborn forms of intuition, the archetypes of perception and apprehension, which are the necessary a priori determinants of all psychic processes."[5] The archetypes are not reducible to the gods that often personify them in traditional cultures. They are in fact much more powerful than gods, and more mysterious.

The archetypal realm is not an eternal order of being superior to our own like Plato's forms. That is to say, it is not separate or transcendent, but immanent to the human organism, instinctual. Jung wrote that the archetype is "the instinct's perception of itself."[6] The archetypal image is the psychic correlate of an instinctual drive. Freud stressed that you can never "see" a drive; you can only know it through its effects. The archetypes never reveal themselves directly, but their influence produces consistent images that manifest symptomatically in our dreams, stories, rituals and art. We can know their presence and their meaning by engaging with their imaginal manifestations in the language of the psyche; i.e., the language of myth.

To reduce archetypal forces to the gods that personify them, as organized religions (and often the New Age) do, is to mistake the symbol for the thing and surrender reason to irrationality. Recognizing the power of the archetypes does not require us to give up our power to think. It simply means becoming aware of the fact that there are patterns to the ego's behavior, and that much of what we think and do is rooted deep in the psychic and sensory apparatus, even if we perceive in it a rational basis. By seeing the patterns, we can understand the true meaning of our actions and direct our behavior more creatively.

Truth and Meaning

Goya's print "The Sleep of Reason Breeds Monsters" shows a man asleep at a desk while a dark menagerie of nocturnal animals -- bats, owls, a lynx -- materializes in the background. The traditional interpretation of this print is that "when reason is suspended, superstitions are bound to arise." This interpretation is in keeping with the Enlightenment ideals that mark Goya's period and modernity in general. But set against the backdrop of the historical events that have unfolded since the eighteenth century, the print offers up a new meaning; namely, that when it is considered to be the only valid mental faculty, reason itself is a kind of sleep, which spawns horrors and monstrosities.

The imperialistic doctrine of the White Man's Burden, the ovens of Auschwitz, the gulags of Stalinist Russia, the cryptofascist activities of the Western intelligence establishment and the devastating consequences of "rational self-interest": these are some of the horrors that can occur when the cult of reason comes to dominate a civilization. The Enlightenment tried to do away with myth by denying its existence and relegating the mythic impulse to the swamps of superstition. But as Jung tells us, denying the existence of the gods does not abolish them; it merely forces them into hiding. In losing myth, we lose the only language we have for dealing with the psyche.

The genius of Camus and Beckett lay in their showing us the fundamental absurdity of modern life. Death is reason's limit. If everything must end in the utter silence of the grave, what reason do I have for living? In strictly rational terms, life is fundamentally absurd and meaningless. Therefore whatever meaning we see in life cannot come to us rationally. It must come from somewhere else, even if it amounts to a courageous engagement with the Absurd as such, as in existentialism. It must come to us through the faculty of intuition.

Because it is intuited from the invisible nexus of primordial psychic forces, meaning belongs on the same plane as myth; in fact it is the function of myth in any culture to provide the meaning(s) of life. Darwinism may accurately reflect the process of natural selection, but the moment I draw meaning from the theory, I turn Darwinism into a myth; which is to say, I read the theory intuitively. Modern science is completely immersed in myth insofar as it perceives a purpose in itself-even if that purpose is to blindly obey our "selfish genes" in the name of evolution. If scientists oppose dogmas and ideologies that curb their pursuit of knowledge, it is because they see that pursuit as being intrinsically meaningful. The quest for truth is an archetypal idea -- it precedes rational thought.

A university professor once told me that he suffered a spiritual crisis when he read Richard Dawkins' The Selfish Gene in the late seventies. Dawkins made his case so powerfully that my professor lost his faith in God and became an atheist, to his own horror. I asked him, "How do you feel now?" He said, "Oh, I feel great. I got over it a long time ago. You come to terms with truth."

When we confront a reality that challenges our most deeply held beliefs, we enter what Tibetan Buddhists call a bardo, an in-between state where the ground of all beliefs vanishes from under our feet. In his essay on Proust, Beckett wrote that human beings are not interested in the New but strive for the peaceful ignorance of habit. The intrusion of the New -- be it a traumatic event or the discovery of a painful scientific fact -- invariably throws us into a state of panic. "The creation of the world," Beckett writes, "did not take place once and for all time, but takes place every day."[7] We project our beliefs into our environment in order to protect ourselves from the Void of the real. But sometimes, something tears through the veil and opens up an unknown space, forcing us to adapt to a new reality. "The periods of transition that separate consecutive adaptations ... represent perilous zones in the life of the individual, dangerous, precarious, painful, mysterious and fertile, when for a moment the boredom of living is replaced by the suffering of being."[8]

For my professor, "coming to terms with truth" meant finding meaning in a world that God had suddenly abandoned. Remembering that myth and meaning arise on the same plane, we can say he had to re-mythologize his world.

Even scientists who dedicate their lives to proving that the mind is a chimerical trick of the biological brain live according to the same principles as the rest of humanity. They too have desires, goals, families, lovers, dreams, guilty pleasures. In other words, they hold one set of beliefs but act on another. They live as if they were "ensouled," as if their lives had intrinsic meaning. A person who truly saw existence as meaningless would not do research, let alone write books.

Think of the suicidal teenager who writes in his journal that life just isn't worth living, that "nothing matters." The very act of writing betrays him -- for to write is to care. Meaning matters even if life doesn't. As the narrator utters at the end of Beckett's novel The Unnamable: "I can't go on, I'll go on."

Imagine the following. A neuroscientist makes an incredible discovery showing once and for all how all processes of the mind can be reduced to neuronal activity. She reacts with joy, excitement and pride at having made an important contribution to the advance of human knowledge. Her head fills with visions of medical breakthroughs, Nobel prizes, TV interviews and science textbooks. That night she dreams of diving into the ocean to recover a magical pearl in the ruins of a sunken city. She brings the pearl back to the surface and saves the kingdom. If death is the great equalizer on the physical plane, then dream is its correlate in the psyche. In dreams we all believe in magic, regardless of our faith or opinions.

In order to get money for their research projects, scientists must tell potential funding agencies why their project should be financed; they must present the purpose of their work. Even a hypothesis whose proof would shatter all hopes of finding meaning in nature would never get backed without some sort of justification. A scientific hypothesis is insignificant until it is wrapped in a myth, be it "the betterment of mankind," "victory against the Nazis," "the war on drugs" or "the quest for knowledge." Like everything else, science must take root in mythic soil in order to bear fruit.

Myth is the life-world of humanity. As science continues to describe the workings of nature, it will create new gaps where meaning will suddenly withdraw, only to be found anew:
"The scientist tries to examine the 'real' nature of the photograph; he tries to get away from the psychological configuration, the meaning of the image, to move down to some other, more basic level of patterns and alternating dots of light and dark, a world of elementary particles. And yet what does he find there but another mental configuration, another arrangement of psychological meaning? If he persists in this direction long enough, the mythological dimensions of science will become apparent in his work, as they would have if he had asked himself questions about the meaning of sunlight rather than questions about the behavior of photons."[9]

Whether light strikes the retina directly or first passes through the lens of an electron microscope doesn't change a thing: the world remains just that, the world: a mystery to explore and a meaning to discover. The "disenchantment of nature," an idea that resurges every time science challenges our traditional views, only makes sense from the perspective of what is passing away. If we understand the psyche for what it is -- a machine, perhaps, but a machine for producing meaning -- then spirituality (religiosity) is inevitable. The moment we glimpse meaning in existence, the world not only becomes "enchanted" once more; it reveals itself as always having been that way.

Sound and Fury

The atheistic crusade of Richard Dawkins brands religion as fundamentally superstitious and inexorably bound to the idea of transcendence. This view allows Dawkins and his followers to lump all forms of religiosity together and dismiss them all as rubbish. In their view, spirit as such is the enemy of reason. On the other hand, it is difficult to read Dawkins without getting the sense that he is actually pretty spiritual, if not downright religious:

"I hear myself often described as a deeply religious man. An American student wrote to me that she had asked her professor whether he had a view about me. 'Sure,' he replied. 'He's positive science is incompatible with religion, but he waxes ecstatic about nature and the universe. To me, that is religion!' But is 'religion' the right word? I don't think so."[10]

Dawkins admits that the beauty and harmony of nature evoke in him feelings of wonder, connection and humility. If he weren't so insistent on saying that these feelings represent nothing more than esthetic appreciation on his part, we would not hesitate to call them spiritual.[11]

Dawkins' hatred of religion, combined with his faith in the unquestionable finality of science and technology, have led some critics to accuse him of being just as fundamentalist as the dogmatists he is crusading against. His recent statement that books like the Harry Potter series may actually harm children by teaching them "mythical" rather than "scientific" thinking don't help his case. It puts him squarely in the company of his enemies, the religious fanatics who have banned and burned J.K. Rowling's books.[12]

Where does Dawkins' vitriol come from? And why is it surfacing at such a fever pitch now, at this particular time? In For They Know Not What They Do, Slavoj Zizek offers a brilliant interpretation of Hegelian dialectics as they operate in history. He tells us that in any conflict between two opposing historical forces (say, naturalism vs. religion), the synthesis that will eventually result from the conflict already exists. "‘Things happen before they effectively happen ... [T]he final ‘word of reconciliation' is a purely formal act, a simple stating of what has already taken place."[13]

During the Enlightenment, for example, by the time the Church had to resort to rational arguments to fight the secularists, it had already lost the war. The transition had already taken place and it was just a matter of time before the Church admitted defeat and withdrew from the sciences altogether.

Zizek links his immanent dialectics to the psychoanalytic process of conversion, how a person goes from one psychological state to another. The crisis that precedes a conscious conversion occurs after the conversion has already happened in the unconscious. What we see in the crisis are the final throes of the ego as it attempts to go on the way it has been going. Zizek's example is particularly relevant here:

"Let us take the case of an atheist becoming a believer. He is torn by fierce inner struggles, religion obsesses him, he gibes aggressively at believers, looks for historical reasons for the emergence of the 'religious illusion,' and so on-all this is nothing but proof that the affair is already decided. He already believes, although he doesn't yet know it."[14]

The sound and fury of today's atheist fundamentalist is the ego's reaction to the still-unconscious fact that science has already disclosed its spiritual dimension. The religious fanatic's resistance to science shows that he is caught in the same state of denial, because the spirituality that science is in the process of uncovering in the very fabric of the universe is as alien to monotheism as it is to the dogma of traditional materialism. The spiritual dimension of science is not metaphorical, nor is science becoming a religion in its own right. Rather, science is revealing that nature is in itself spiritualized, that consciousness is not a problem we can pin to the pineal gland or some other part of the brain. Consciousness in all of its facets -- including myth and meaning -- is part of nature.

If there's one thing Richard Dawkins hates, it is the tendency of non-scientists to use the ideas of quantum mechanics to justify their own "irrational" beliefs. But the point is that physics does show that there are elements in our universe that do not obey Newtonian laws. Unfortunately for Dawkins, the "enemies of reason" have already reached the inner sanctum of the most fundamental science. When Niels Bohr said, "Sometimes, the opposite of a profound truth is not a lie but another profound truth," the game was already over. Arguing that metaphysical speculation should be strictly reserved for the initiates of particle physics would do little more at this point than elevate those experts to the rank of priests and confirm the dogmatic nature of scientism.

The spiritual dimension that science discloses lies in the interdependence, still only vaguely understood, between nature and consciousness. The quantum physicist David Bohm theorized that nature is imbued with deep creative intentionality. He writes:

"[N]ature is much more than what appears on the surface. That would be a way of expressing a sort of extended form of materialism. But -- and this is the point -- it could equally well be called idealism, spirit, consciousness. The separation of the two -- matter and spirit -- is an abstraction."[15]

The atheist's critique of monotheistic dogma in light of the findings of modern science is valid. The animus behind it, however, is a symptom of denial: denial of the fact that the mysterious core that exists in all religious systems is also present at the heart of scientific theory.

God and the Alien

Spirituality does not require a transcendent God -- an abstract Other -- against which the spiritual experience must take place. On the contrary, spirituality is the intuition of the immanent possibilities, infinite and magical, of our reality. Transcendence is an obstacle to the spirit: it builds a wall that we must scale to get a glimpse of the infinite. That is why mystics insist on going beyond all categorizations in order to find the emptiness that is the true source of being.

The philosophy of Gilles Deleuze is an attempt to establish a spirituality of immanence. The "plane of immanence," he tells us, is the ground of reality, synonymous with Spinoza's single substance of mind and matter: "the immanence of immanence, absolute immanence: it is complete power, complete bliss."[16] It is consistent with the "luminous emptiness" of Mahayana Buddhism. Neither idea requires us to postulate the existence of a transcendent God.
Instead of limiting the field of infinity with an abstract Other, immanence continually posits the coming of an Other. It sees the Other not as transcendent impossibility (Tertullian's credo quia absurdum) but as a virtual Possible, immanent and imminent -- the promise of an encounter. Here, the Other is not God, but the Alien. The Alien can take the form of an extraterrestrial race, a celestial intelligence or a robotic consciousness; what matters is that it replaces the absent God without rebuilding a transcendent structure.

Science needs the Alien. How else can we explain the existence of SETI? Or the deep-space satellites carrying messages for other civilizations? Or the efforts of Japanese scientists to build an android? Or, for that matter, the following verse from the Built to Spill song "Goin' Against Your Mind":

When I was a kid I saw a light / Floating high above the trees one night. / Thought it was an alien, / Turned out to be just God.

The sidereal longings of Arthur C. Clark and Carl Sagan speak volumes about the latent religiosity of scientific thought. God is dead, long live the Alien. Faith in something that has passed (Jesus, Mohammed) has been replaced by hope for something to come. However, this something comes not to replace our reality (earthly paradise) but to expand it (interstellar civilization). The Other is a possible world:

"There is, at some moment, a calm and restful world. Suddenly a frightened face looms up that looks at something [out of frame]. The other person appears here as neither subject nor object but as something very different: a possible world, the possibility of a frightening world. This possible world is not real, or not yet, but it exists nonetheless: it is an expressed that exists only in its expression -- the face, or an equivalent of the face." [17]

The face of the Grey Alien, itself an age-old archetypal image, is an icon of immanent spirituality. It is a picture of another world, either organic (the beings at the end of Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind) or artificial (the beings at the end of Spielberg's AI). The world of the Grey is unknowable, but it is possible. To some, it is a terrible insect world where empathy does not exist, while to others it holds the promise of cosmic communion. The hope (or fear) of an encounter with the Alien is a fundamental component of scientific civilization. It is one of the cracks that let its preconscious spirituality shine through.[18]

The spirituality of immanence is a central theme of Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, if not of Kubrick's work as a whole. In my previous article "The Kubrick Gaze," I argued in support of the view that the Black Monolith in 2001 represents, on one level, the movie screen; it symbolizes the medium of cinema itself, showing us how cinema offers a way out of the prison of language, which sets a limit to thought.[19] On a deeper level, the Black Monolith symbolizes the plane of immanence, and also the Alien in its essential nature, the mirror-void where we see ourselves reflected as producers of being. The Star Child at the end of the film heralds the arrival of a new epoch, when humans (re)gain the capacity to think in symbol and image rather than in logic and words.

Nature as Culture

The secularism of the modern age did not free us from the gods. By day, we lived in a grey world devoid of myth, but by night our dreams continued to bathe us in the submarine glow of primeval magic. The very drives we had chased from the light of conscious thought still exerted their pull upon us, only now they wore the mask of reason. A buried god is an angry god: by repressing him, by limiting the flows of psychic energy that he personifies, we merely invite him to resurface in the form of individual or mass neurosis.

The fact is that we cannot exist without myth; meaning and being are inseparable. If we do not consciously construct our myths in full cognizance of their instinctual power, then they will impose themselves on us unconsciously. Nearly thirty years ago, William Irwin Thompson wrote, "The shadow which our technological civilization casts is Lilith, the ‘Maid of Desolation' who dances in the ruins of cities."[20] The myths of progress and contest can be useful, but when we ignore their irrational origin, they become monstrous and destructive. By repressing an essential dimension of the human, the Faustian modern world only made the forces of the unconscious more powerful and uncontrollable. As a result it became sick, and it is still stick. Once you accept the reality of psychic phenomena, the real superstition, the one inherent in the "sleep of reason," reveals itself to you: it is the belief that something will disappear if you pretend it isn't there.

The return to mythological consciousness does not imply a transformation of consciousness itself, but a collective re-valuation of the human experience as it naturally unfolds. It requires us to effect a cultural shift, the creation of communities where human beings are allowed to be what they have always been.

Myths are born in the bardos, in the in-betweens. Whereas the myriad anomalies of life (synchronicities, sudden hunches, slips of the tongue, psychedelic visions, ominous dreams, telepathic connections, phantasmal encounters) were once discarded as hallucinatory noise in the smooth transmission of rational data, they must now be seized upon and explored like all other experiences. In doing so we can become aware that myth and meaning are synonymous with the immanence of nature in all its varieties.

A time of mythological consciousness does not elevate myth above reason. On the contrary, it is a time when, by harnessing the power of the archetypal forces, we are able to build the world we desire: a conscious world. Such a world will not fall into our laps as a gift from the gods. It must be co-created with them.

* * *
NOTES:
[1] Pinchbeck, Daniel. We contact this primal energy in our finest moments. From the moment a baby is born, it is enshrouded in the unselfish love of its mother. From the moment a person springs into action to save others from peril, their own thoughts of survival are 'overlighted' by the love and caring that shines from their heart.

When a person dies and reviews their life, they see that one thing that mattered the most: Love. Pure, unadulterated, unconditional love. It is the source of compassion. It is the energy of caring for others. It is the binding force which holds together the entire universe, and it flows through you whenever you simply allow it.

Love is the gateway to spiritual consciousness. It is through activation of the spiritual heart that we pass into a whole new world of expansion and joy. In the realms of spiritual consciousness, we find peace, bliss, and continual inspiration. In the realms of spiritual consciousness, we expand our view of life to see the issues that are important to the soul. We can then see how love can heal and how we can and should spend the time to spread a little more love in the world every day, even if it is simply done in silent prayer for the well-being of others.

Let your heart open to love each and every day. Start the day in meditation and prayer for the healing and well-being of others and you will invoke a beautiful flow of natural energy through yourself. It truly is a great way to start each day because it sets the tone and the energy flow for the day.

When you are attuned to the natural flow of love throughout the universe, you then feel the natural flow of energy within your own universe. Your senses of insight and timing develop to help you achieve more and to succeed easily at the tasks that are important to you.

The flow of love is critical to life. Without the love of the Divine Mother which fills the universe, nothing would exist. For centuries, humankind has been playing a game where love and inner inspiration have been blocked off and ignored. Today, the tide is turning and people are opening up to this wonderful flow of natural energy.

Remember the love within, especially when outer circumstances seem dark. Remember that love is the gateway to the higher realms of consciousness where answers can be found to meet every challenge that life presents.

Tune into love. It will never let you down. Instead, it will set your spirit free to explore the realms of consciousness which offer greater vistas of awareness, greater peace of mind, and the sense of ever-present joy.

For more spiritual insights visit Owen's website: http://www.InfiniteBeing.com

The list of things I feel unsure about seems to be steadily increasing. For instance, I don't know if our solipsistic species will survive much longer, and sometimes I am not even sure how much I care. I don't know if Barack Obama is a warm-hearted leader who will unite people at a time of adversity, or the most brilliant puppet ever put forth by the New World Order conspirators (who, as radio journalist and documentary filmmaker Alex Jones suggests, may be plotting a program of rapid depopulation). I don't know if the increase in UFO sightings means we are approaching a benevolent contact experience or a horrific predatory ambush. I don't know if global warming is mainly caused by human action, or if it is part of a phase transition of the entire solar system, as the Russian scientist Dmitriev proposes.

I don't know if men and women should be monogamous or if it is better to be bonobo-like in one's erotic habits. I don't know if we will develop some type of new energy technology that will rescue us from Peak Oil, or if we are destined to see industrial civilization devolve and disintegrate as fossil fuel becomes scarce. I don't know whether to learn to grow food and harvest rainwater or to master some weird new esoteric discipline like Vortex Healing or Keylontic Science. I don't know if free will exists, or if we are conditioned robots, performing an illusory spectacle scripted by Hindu deities or dreamtime ancestors. I don't know if we should get rid of religions or create a really cool new one.

I don't know whether to stockpile gold or create an intentional community. I don't know whether to stay in Manhattan or head for the hills. I don't know whether we are approaching global enlightenment or regressing into barbarism. I don't know whether biotechnology and nanotechnology will fuse to give us immortal physical bodies or if we will all croak as our mistreated planet falls apart. I don't know if anything special will happen on December 21, 2012. I don't know if I should start a riot or throw a party. I don't know whether to panic or relax.

Something seems to be happening that is beyond my capacity to understand or articulate. I can only assume other people are feeling this way as well. We are witnessing the collapse of the old, rigidified structures, while the new hasn't come into realization yet -- that is, if there is going to be a new anything. A change seems to be happening at the level of logic, which is becoming less dualistic, less "either-or," and more binary, "both-and." Former diametric opposites are moving toward confluence, as well as dissonance, in various areas: Like tweaked out psychonauts, the physicists at CERN discuss opening portals into other dimensions. As the financial system evaporates, incredible new gizmos like Pandora and Cool Iris spread freely on the Internet. Obama references Chicago 1968 in his acceptance speech at Grant Park, then hires as his economic advisers the guys who, under Clinton, deregulated the banking system, causing the current disaster.

Reality is becoming more improvisational and up-tempo. Although I don't pretend to have certainty about it, the ideas that Jose Arguelles, Terence McKenna and others have proposed about time speeding up and going through ever-faster fractal spirals of historical pantomime -- including, alas, the mass suffering usually caused by historical convulsions - seem increasingly on the mark. If we are shifting away from dualistic separation and linear logic to a binary thought marked by polarities, this also suggests a shift from the modern historical perspective to a revived mythological consciousness. Like processes in the unconscious, myth resolves oppositions through symbol and image, without need of rational explanation. A society that reintegrates mythic thought at a deeper level of awareness will be able to handle seemingly contradictory perspectives without breaking down.
Read the rest here: http://www.realitysandwich.com/age_uncertainty

It is important to understand that all physical manifestation on the Earth is the result of divine thought, divine intention and divine energy. Though objects, people and buildings appear solid and unchanging, in reality they are alive with the dance of light, vibration and the constant movement of atoms, molecules, electrons, energies, and physical/non-physical particles which form the spiritual building blocks of physical reality.

Beloved ones, the growing light on the Earth requires a new awareness of yourself and of how energies, thoughts and emotions flow both within your own being and amongst people. Most people have learned to identify with their emotional states, or with their life roles, or with the work they do, or with their beliefs, or with their relationships. "I am a parent" "I am anxious" "I am a tax attorney" "I am disabled" and so forth, are ways of relating to oneself that were developed during humanity's exploration of separated, individuated consciousness. Now, as humanity moves into a new direction of integration, wholeness, and unity, it becomes possible to experience a deeper understanding of who you are, beyond the roles, relationships, ideas and concepts that you may have previously identified with.

Beloved ones, you are so much more than you believe you are. Underneath the humble and seemingly ordinary face of your daily life experience lies a treasure trove of spiritual jewels, waiting to be revealed. The growing light on the Earth is already beginning to transform consciousness, so there is no need to "try" to see what God is revealing to you. Rather, what is needed is the willingness to be flexible in your consciousness, and to un-hinge yourself from daily habits of thought, word and action that create separation from life and separation from others.

When you release yourself from habitual actions and thoughts, life opens in a miraculous way. The present moment with its infinite dance of possibilities, beckons forth new qualities from within you, and asks only that you be present and aware. It is not necessary to practice this, but rather to allow it. Sometimes a change in your daily schedule can create more space for this possibility, but the awareness can be brought to any moment, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant. As you open to this awareness, which is at the fundamental root of who you are as a spiritual being, new possibilities arise that can transform even the most entrenched situations.

Solutions to so many of the practical challenges of today's world are in existence and already present within the collective consciousness of humanity. What is needed is for humanity to release habitual roles and forms of consciousness, so that the larger collective spiritual awareness can be revealed, which contains the inspirations and solutions that are so desperately needed. Many souls have already started down this path, and have created a spiritual pathway of consciousness that others can follow. You can begin to awaken by making a choice to do so, which will begin to attract the situations, people and supports that will help you.

The more people who choose to open their consciousness to spiritual reality, the more rapidly the larger collective body of humanity can awaken and discover the solutions to the many practical problems of today's world. The challenges facing today's world cannot be solved by actions alone, but by a collective shift in consciousness and vibration. The momentum towards this larger transformational shift is accelerating, and your part in this transition is essential. Each individual has a huge impact on the whole, and your choices and actions can open a pathway of light for others.

For some souls it may feel like you are being swept along in a strong current without a life preserver right now. The process of purification is greatly amplified, and you may find yourself with sudden bouts of negativity, fear, despair or emotional suffering. Despite your best efforts, you may find yourself at times unable to contain these energies, so that you end up acting in ways that do not match your soul's intentions. It is deeply important at this time that you create a supportive environment for yourself so that you have a way to process what is happening for yourself internally, and so that you have the space in your life to be able to release negative energies in ways that do not adversely affect other souls.

Beloved ones, the support and light that will carry you to the next phase of this new time are already present and available to you. By allowing yourself to be fully present in this new time, all that you need will be made available to you, and you will be guided and supported in your journey. New supports are being created that will support this transition, and we recommend your participation in the Art of Being Present which will open new pathways vibrationally in your consciousness to allow this transition. We bless your presence on the Earth and in this new time. Amen.

Source: WorldBlessings.net is a spiritual gathering place dedicated to the unity of souls and to the creation of a sacred earth.

Today your world stands on the precipice of a new day, however most souls on the Earth cannot feel the joyous reality of this new time.

Beloved ones, as the presence of God's light strengthens daily in leaps and bounds on the Earth, the presence of darkness and oppositional energies also increases. God's light is inherently stronger and will ultimately triumph, shifting this energetic configuration to a new level. At the present time, the moment to moment and daily interplay of the energies of light and darkness is creating much challenge, especially for those sensitive souls whose bodies are carrying higher vibrations of light than currently exist on the planet as a whole.

Many souls who here on Earth to support this momentous transition are experiencing changes in their bodies. As light increases it transforms the cellular and energetic structures of the body. The process of purification frees the soul from old burdens and opens doorways to the higher dimensions of light. These changes create not only unusual physical and energetic experiences, but also can open up new experiences of energy. Many energies exist in other dimensions of reality and are becoming visible now in the new light that has come to the Earth.

Because of the strong interplay at this time between energies of light and energies of darkness, many lightworkers and faithful servants of God are experiencing new challenges. Some of these experiences include the following:

- The feeling of being attacked and under siege.
- Being ignored, not heard by others as though you are invisible.
- Strong and sudden surges of emotion, some of which seems to be clearly not your own.
- A feeling of oppression, blocked and being unable to move forward.
- Miscommunication in relationships - people do not seem to hear or understand you even if you repeat yourself.
- Feels of despair that the difficulties will never end.
- Experiences of contraction that appear to prevent even the simplest tasks from moving forward easily.

Some of the things that can help you to cope with this vigorous and ever changing energetic landscape are:

- A daily time of prayer and meditation.
- "Time out" each day to rest, lie down and keep silence. Even 10 minutes of this will make a big difference in helping you to stabilize your energy field.
- Group support in any way that nourishes you, which creates a stronger energy field of light around you.
- No matter what crises or limitations you are going through, schedule time to do something enjoyable each day. Small pleasures are as effective as more elaborate ones. Enjoy a cup of your favorite tea in a quiet environment, or spend time outside on a beautiful day.

Beloved ones, the energies of darkness and contraction may cause you to feel fear or to take personally what is happening. It is important that you hold these experiences in the larger context in which they are occurring. The energies of darkness are magnetized by and attracted to the energies of light, and this is what causes the phenomena. The challenges are not occurring because you are a bad person, or because you are being punished. This is a larger cosmic phenomenon, and those that are carrying light are being affected by the storms of transformation happening on the Earth.

Beloved ones, during this time of transition, we wish to offer our love, gratitude and blessings to all those who are holding God's love in your hearts, desiring to help others and to bring greater light to a suffering world. Our messenger Mashubi will be undergoing a transition in the next period of time and for this reason will not be available for personal communications for a while. A new level of possibility will emerge in the New Year for all including those who serve God's purposes here at World Blessings. With all love, blessings and gratitude, Amen.

WorldBlessings.net is a spiritual gathering place dedicated to the unity of souls and to the creation of a sacred earth.
